The opening narration was just hilarious. As far as the first three Pokemon movies go however, this was my least favorite so I can't wait to see you three pick at all the little things wrong with it.

The opening narration was really hilarious especially when Phelous showed up in this video.

All I was thinking was: "Phelous! What are you doing here?!

I'm not sure if you watched it before saying that for shits and giggles but regardless thats still freakin hilarious considering the review.

It is funny looking back I used to love the first two movies over the third, but really The whole story with Molly is Aces better than both of them.

But aren't you three getting ahead of yourselves? Isn't Mewtwo Returns set before 4Ever. Technically a TV special I still think it deserves a review in here :D

"Boy, this crystal empire sure has a lot of stairs..."

MLP reference detected! As soon as I heard it I was kind of expecting you to make a juxtaposition of Entei and Sombra, but I guess it's a good idea to keep season 3 references to a minimum if we don't want a brony civil war to erupt in the comments.

Anyway, this movie looks so great it makes me wonder why I don't remember it as well as the previous two. I guess its release coincided with my gradual loss of passion for the series. I probably just watched this (and Mewtwo Returns) more out of a sense of obligation than from getting genuinely psyched about them, and I never really watched any of the following movies, excepting a few scenes from the fourth one I walked in on when my little brothers were watching it. Still, really looking forward to the next review and the "mystery" guest reviewer!

King Sombra would be happy as can be with that place...

Oh, please. King Sombra was as interesting and threatening as a wet sandal. He makes dark chrystals, oooowho the fuck cares, one of the most boring animated antagonists I've ever seen.

Since the inhabitants of that land essentially becomes living crystal, the dark twisting of crystal would be grew-some there. Would be like changing the landscape into twisted rotting flesh... but for kids.

    I think suede noticed.

lol, I could be wrong but it sounded like Linkara was doing a little mock "Frank Miller" inner mono-logging of his own, except without the added ELLIPSIS put into EVERY repetitive OVERUSED MANLY sentence. Still, it was great, if anyone could do a Frank Miller-ish noir narration it would be him.

And JDub's scenes were hilarious. Seriously though, that cube image of him was understandably creepy-looking. Even I was a bit freaked out when he arrived in the game looking like that. lol, Great work you guys.

Cartoon Network premieres didn't really start until DP. In fact Destiny Deoxys was a Kids WB premiere. Anyway, there was no better way to review this. Your analysis, the chemistry, the jokes, the delivery... bravo guys, bravo! Can't wait for 4Play with JO!

And yes, this is one of my top 3 Pokemon movies.

PS: In the anime, the Ruins of Alph are Omanyte infested, not Unown-infested, as seen in "Fossil Fools".

Sorry for being a negative Nancy on you person, but you are wrong they just happen to skip a couple movies, after Gerard Chia wish maker(I don't care if I pronounced it wrong it stars Max and every other character is a side character.) As for everything else I'm looking forward to Jo, unless we're going to be completely thrown for a loop and is not going to be Joe and going to be nash using Joe's avatar! Granted that would be completely surprising!

Molly can't change anything because the Unknown can't control their powers anymore.

And I didn't even watch the movie. That was in your clips. Remember the psychic energy thing you thought was stupid?
  • ThatDudeInTheSuede
    avatar
I admit I didn't think of that, so kudos! XD

However, the reason the unown's psychic reserves got built up was because molly's desires went haywire, messing with their equilibrium. If she had focused her desires on a solution to the problem, it probably would have snapped them out of it, defeating them two ways.

That, however, is conjecture. A simpler question to ask would be why she needed to believe in Entei when it's shown that her desires aren't doing anything at the moment. The conundrum's still there, in one form or another.

WHAT? Why does this have only, like, 7 comments? Where's the feedback? Where's the celebrations? These reviews are my favourite thing! I demand attention from other people!
As for the review - yeah, that's the last Pokemon movie I remember watching before "growing up" and playing only the games. I loved it, this was my first bought movie on a VHS tape, I loved watching it. Glad you also liked it, guys. So, Suede, now that you DID leave us with a "Mysterious Stranger" in the fourth review you HAVE TO (please!) do the next review faster!

3rd movie's english dub is the the only one I actually like. The music by Ralph Schuckett is also fantastic. The score for this movie was not released, for some idiotic reason. IT NEEDS TO BE.

I'm going to take a chance and say they're getting JesuOtaku to replace Linkara for the next review.

It makes sense. She did those Pokemon quizzes on her stream, and I believe she mentioned liking the fourth movie.
So yeah, it HAS to be her.

I shuddered when Linkara called this Silent Hill for kids. Its just... yes.

My only real complaint with your review is that you missed out my personal favorite line. I havent watched it in years, but I remember a secen where misty is telling molly to stop, and that she can properly grow up and have her own real pokemon. And Mollys reply is just "But I already have my real pokemon..." and three of hers materialise and turn to crystal. That struck such a chord with me it remains, for some reason I cannot fathom, as one of my most precious memories, or one I frequently recall.
  • SRanger1071  - Right in the Nostalgia!
I remember seeing the first 2 movies when I was a kid, but this is the one I owned growing up. And, thus, the one I saw the most. I know it's a Pokemon movie, with everything that entails (goofy lines, dumb law enforcement, weird morals, beautiful animation, good fun, surprising drama, etc), but it will always hold a special place in my heart.

Saw the first 2 films in Theaters, ended up seeing this film on pan-and-scan DVD... marketing wasn't that strong back then for this film.
I think I should revisit this film one point.

"Is there no limit to how low 4Kids will stoop?"
Yeah. It's called "Yu-Gi-Oh The Movie". WORST. FUCKING. THING. IN. EXISTANCE!!!!! No seriously, that film is just a disgrace to everything in Life. For those that want to know, I'm a man that never watches Yu-Gi-Oh, yet has to see it in order to help out with a friend of mine's video review (MajinVegetaJT, the name of his YT account.)... but besides that fact, Holy Jesus, is this worse than every bad film combined.
  • DMaster  - Now, now, no for hyperbole.
For all that's wrong with that movie (easily the worst thing in the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise), you clearly haven't seen any of the truly awful material reviewed on this site (Marville? Deuces? Son of the Mask? Christmas Shoes? Sweet Movie? A Serbian Film?).
  • tomrule123  - @DMaster
Those don't count on my book because I have not seen some of them or had seen them in reviews *in their entirety!* This film, I had to see it in its entirety, and let me tell you something, it hurts me more than Batman and Robin... that's certainly a bit generous. It makes "The Room" turn into a cult masterpiece! (oh wait, these were the films that were reviewed... shit. Though I had seen these films before the reviews, so it's all justified... :/ )

To be clear (before anyone asks), I wouldn't see the Yu-Gi-Oh series not because of the film, but because... I really don't see anything interesting in that show. Pokemon pretty much spoiled it. Characters and the cards weren't that interesting. Chances of me watching this show are very, very slim... unless you watch the Abridged Series. Those are awesome.
  • DMaster
I've seen Borat and the Yugioh movie. I've seen Cabin Fever and the Yugioh movie. I've seen Disaster Movie and the Yugioh movie. Yugioh? At its worst? Got nuthin' on those.
  • ZorcxFlorence
    avatar
As a Yugioh fan, let me be the first to say that we do not talk about the dark times.

The movie really is the worst thing to come out of the franchise. See while the spin-offs (GX, 5Ds, Zexal) all have their problems, I still found them each to be fairly enjoyable (let's face it, the original had problems too)... But that movie... UGH!

Boy, were my friend and I hyped to see this yesterday, Suede.

We did have a theory as to why the Unown kidnapped Professor Hale, especially when you factor in how they act according to Molly's wishes later in the film: Hale was fascinated with the Unown above anything else in his research, so could their kidnapping him be a way of attempting to sate his desire to learn more about them? After all, what better way to learn about a creature like the Unown than to be transported into their world, where hundreds of them are constantly present?
  • Semudara

That's... a really good theory, actually.

Regarding Molly simultaneously engaging in a Pokemon battle while napping in her room, I always figured the version of her in the battle was like a make-believe projection when, in fact, she never left her room. At least that was always my theory.

I saw this movie once or twice just about the time I was starting to out-grow Pokemon, and unfortunately I didn't appreciate how good it really was. I think at the time I thought the previous Pokemon movies were okay at best.

I liked the first movie because Mew was just adorable and I thought Mewtwo was a cool, bad-ass villain. What's more is that the pre-birth dream he had that 4Kids cut out of the American version, if you think of that scene as in-canon Mewtwo is even more interesting. Yeah, throughout the rest of the movie he's a poorly-written hypocrite, but I still liked him for the cool bad-ass qualities he still had.

The second movie was... meh. The only thing I can really say about that movie is that Lugia is pretty cool.

I was about thirteen when I saw this movie. I think by then I just got sick of the same formulaic episodes and Ash and company weren't changing as characters therefore their routines were getting stale in my eyes.
Hence I think I wound up unfairly dismissing what was actually a good Pokemon movie. On one hand I don't see myself going crazy, fangirl-style over this movie since my love for Pokemon has vastly waned over the past decade, however I can see myself watching it again with fellow fans of Pokemon.

And I'll admit, the one scene in this movie that always stood out was when Molly is forced to deal with reality, and the world around them is getting all hard, cold and sharp. That's and understandable, powerful reaction to grief.

I think this is the last Pokemon movie I saw, because the craze kind of died in the UK after that and I was the only person I knew in a small town (and without the internet) who was still into it.
But I adored this movie. I haven't seen it in a long time and now I want to watch it again!
  • Manny  - Damn right!

THE best Pokemon movie, bar none!

Unfortunately, it was all down hill from here. A few spikes maybe, but this one raised the bar too high to reach again.
  • AuraKnightStar
    avatar
This is my favourite Pokemon movie. And I agree with you on all your points here. Although I never thought of this as Silent Hill for children. Had to stop the video and let that sink in for a bit.
Another thought on the Unon, they transformed the mansion into a fortess and continued to build more wall around it, protecting Molly from the outside world. They did not change the surrounding land only encasing everything in crystal and ejecting all the people from it. Preserving it, creating a static unchanging world that could not hurt her.
Um, just letting you know there is an animation editing error around the 8 minute mark where Sued's eyes stay on screen for a few seconds after the switch from the animated reviewers to the footage of Molly and here Dad.
Is the guest reviewer JO (JesuOtaku)?
Love these Pokemon movie reviews keep up the good work and I hope you can get them out faster or you will never catch up with the series.
  • fanime1  - Another animation mistake
    avatar
I noticed that too, but didn't realize those were his eyes. I was just like, "What the hell is that?" I also noticed another mistake where Suede's right eye was on his nose, when it was supposed to be behind it. It looked weird. So yeah, that's all I noticed.
  • Omen11  - Jesu or Mars girl!

    It;s just gotta be!

Another movie that I saw the trailer but didn't see it in theaters. The first time I watched it, if I remember correctly, was when I was babysitting someone's child and had accidently left his VHS copy of the movie. So I watched it and, much like you three sum it up, it was a pretty darn good movie. I'm glad you three like it the most than the previous two. It does feel like a darker tone for our main characters.

And Suede, I want to say that I have been visiting your blog site reading your posts and it's great you're doing great with these videos and your Pokemon reviews are fun to watch. Don't worry about rushing your schedule to make videos, we can wait for your next review on future Pokemon movies and shorts. Oh, and by the way, congratulations for becoming the soon-to-be father! Thought I want to put it out here. Keep it up!

Yeah looking back this movie probably is the better of the Pokemon films. I quit watching them after Arceus. However I still enjoy the first 3 the best. I actually had the chance of seeing Pokemon 4Ever in theaters and looking back on that one, I'm excited to see them do the review since the fourth one was pretty weird, though at the time I loved it and I guess I can call the 4th one a Guilty Pleasure
