03.09.2011 - 08:00 | Lee is Still GamingI loved the first Land Before Time movie, but had no interest in watching the sequels. I think I eventually watched the 2nd one, but that's about it. Every year I'd see a commercial for a new Land Before Time movie, and I was all, "God damn, we're up to 7!?" After that, they stopped numbering them.
I can't believe there's 13 movies. That ties Dragon Ball Z for the most movie sequels.
Thanks for reviewing these movies. God knows I never want to watch them, but Land Before Time fans out there want to know what all they did or didn't miss.
-
Yeah, Dragonball Z is not the only series this ties with now.
This movie was bad. Even as a kid I only watched it once (which considering I watched Hercules over 50 times, that says quite a lot). I hated that "Big Water" song as a kid because it's the opposite of an earworm. It gets stuck in your head and DOES NOT LEAVE. Ever. Thank you so much for reviewing this.

I watched some of the films when I was a kid, and while I did enjoy them back then, I honestly cannot remember the plot of ANY of the sequels. I did enjoy the others at the time, but considering I can't even recall the plots or new characters or anything, they probably weren't good enough to stay in my brain too long. XD Only the first one really held my attention and became one of my fave movies as a kid.

03.18.2011 - 18:07 | secretsheikAt least with Dragonball Z, the movies went somewhat along with what was happening in the series at the time. Like Cooler's Revenge happened after the Frieza saga, stuff like that. These, however, are just random scenario-fests.

03.08.2011 - 23:47 | AhzeyaAnd so passes the last worthwhile sequel.
I love the reference to Littlefoot's mother; still get kinda teary-eyes in fact.
I guess you could argue that Ducky and Petrie got spooked by the ocean after the whole wave incident, but yeah, the the song was God-awful.
Still, I consider this film to be in the spirit of the original because it was more about the kids wanting to get back to their parents. I'll always hold the original head and shoulders above any of the sequels, but, in my opinion, this one was the best sequel.

Y'know I liked these movies as a kid... I was a stupid stupid child... Yet for some reasons I can't really bring ,myself to hate them. Don't get me wrong these movies blow big time, but they still hold a place in my heart. This is most likely because these were shown to me at a young age, before I had a mind for cinema. It may also be because I used to watch these with my mother, who I now don't see because of her drinking problem. But still bad movies.

It's movies like The Land Before Time sequels and The Tom and Jerry Movie (The first Nostalgia Critic review I saw.) are why I hate seeing musical numbers in animated kids movies. The music's horrible, the "singers" can't sing, who cares about visuals when you're in pain from the bad songs, and all in all, it's a giant 3-minute chore to sit through any of them, even back when I was kid. Even worse is because this was in the 1990s, it MUST have musical numbers for only to attempt emulating the success of Disney's musical movies. News flash, Disney knows how to make their musical numbers entertaining in both audio and video; they even have sing along videos that showcase the finest. You hacks can't even get basic background music and harmonious vocals right, and with spamming such atrocity in the movie every 10 minutes, you have scarred me and possibly many more children from the 1990s for life. Trash the songs altogether and just make them speak the badly shoehorned lyrics into a form of a regular conversation; it'll make your dumb film feel like there is some intelligence despite what little of it there already is.
Anyways, I can't thank you enough MarzGurl for reviewing the entire series. This was the last Land Before Time movie I saw when I was younger before I grew out of them, so seeing the reviews of movies 6 - 13 will be an even bigger treat.

These movies are sooo bad, yet these reviews are so enjoyable.
I think the reason most of these character's talk now is because it does away with the need for much effort on body language. Seeing these review makes me appreciate the Ice Age sequels a lot more since that series could have easily ended up in direct to video hell as well.

03.09.2011 - 01:39 | SkemonoWait, Chomper can talk?
None of the other sharptooths (sharpteeth?) have ever shown any ability to speak, have they? Is it just something Chomper picked up from spending a few hours with Littlefoot et al? Or do sharptooths gain the ability to speak as children, and lose it when they become adults?

When were "Locust" and "Rain Cloud" scientific terms? I agree that the dinosaurs' proper nouns are stupid, but I don't agree with the reasoning. It's idiotic because the writers wanted to convey that the animals had low or less than desirable intelligence by having them call certain things by other obvious English words. It's not because the animals weren't using scientific terms. If I was watching this as a child, my reaction to the dinosaurs calling clouds 'sky water' wouldn't be, "Why aren't they calling it a Stratus Nebulosus?"
What you actually asking is why they aren't using common English vernacular, which don't make sense anyway. Think about it, wouldn't it feel off if the dinosaurs, creatures born millions of years ago, long before even the first cognizant word was uttered by humanity, were somehow able to use the exact same proper nouns as English speakers now? It'd be just as off putting as a dog on the Titanic singing a rap song about "Party Time". Honestly, this joke should extend into how the hell did these prehistoric dinosaurs even came up with words like "water" and "leaf", actual common place English nouns. I guess going on a tirade about Etymology in a review about Land Before Time V would be a tad over-the-top, but there could have been a better, more all-inclusive means to convey that this speech is stupid.
To summarize this mini rant, I agree whole heartily with the review, especially that this movie are bad and cheesy. It's just that one joke comes off to me like one of those British Colonists commenting on the language of the people they just invaded. "It's pronounced 'Cloud', not chumo or kumo or however you bloody say it. Now give us your valuables and pray to our God!"

This movie was the turning point when I wasn't childishly excited for ANYTHING related to the Land Before Time - probably around the time I was 15 or so. I mean, yeah, I still kind of gave them a pass up to this point, but I sort of stopped being interested in any more sequels and I stopped following the series. Then everything kind of took on a nostalgic view and I watched them anyways from the point of view of an animation snob. :P
Great review, I'm loving this series. Really picks me up to watch your entries.

This was the last one I saw from begining to end. I used to love this one when I was younger and I still have the video tape of it somewhere. I'm glad to see that looking back it still has its charm. I agree that I prefer Chomper when he couldn't speak (he was more adorable that way) but even so this is probably still my favourite of the Land Before Time sequel movies. Oh and I still remember Big Big Water and Friends For Dinner so clearly more than any other Land Before Time song.

I just managed to make it through this movie...it was torture, but I was brave; I think I said in the review you did for the first movie which one I gave up on *shudders at the thought of the abomination*
wait..."leaf gobblers?" "LEAF GOBBLERS?!" okay now these childish names are starting to get ridiculous. It's also kinda wierd that they call their food "green food." Yeah, it IS green, but it's all they eat, so why be specific? But I'm being nitpicky here so I'll stop being a smart-ass
the big water song is annoying, but "always there" isn't so bad...just because Littlefoot's memory comes back and he FINALLY mentions his mother.
great review, balanced and so true. Good luck with movie VI

03.09.2011 - 05:20 | tri-sapphireI'm pretty sure this is the last of the Land Before Time sequels I've seen. So from here on out it's going to be very interesting seeing what direction they went in for the remaining movies.
I'm really liking the thorough style of the reviews. Keep up the good work.
