03.04.2011 - 20:51 | uknownadaTo be honest, I would wish that too.
I'm not saying these are bad reviews. And I love watching bad movies. It's just...I can't watch it. I can't watch it at all. I made my parents watch these movies with me all the time as a little kid, because I was going through my dinosaur phase, and...everytime I watch this I'm hit by the guilt-hammer. I cannot believe how much pain I put them through. I'm not going to watch anymore. The guilt is too much.

Well I'm glad you're doing it and not me. I saw the 2nd movie when I was a kid and wasn't too bothered by it cause I hadn't fully understood what made the 1st one so great, but I had just realized how sequels were never as good as the 1st one. By the time the 3rd movie came out I knew that was going to far and I gave up on them all. There wasn't a thing advertised about this movie that was the hook for it (where as in the 2nd movie they introduced Chomper, and for kids that was kinda fun).
The things I remember seeing advertised about some of the other movies is that Little Foot meets a girl Long Neck his age, and Chomper comes back. Out side of that I have no idea what terribleness you're going to fall into.

02.20.2011 - 04:39 | johnkenpwnsPerhaps it would've been best to say that sequels, in any media, have a reputation for being bad by default and while there are in fact some notable sequels that surpass their predecessor in nearly every way, movies like "The Land Before Time II & III" (and more) ensure that the stigma will be around for generations to come.
Also, doesn't Spike get a voice later in the series?

The problem with movie sequels usually tends to be that the choice to make them is always a purely business one. If the original film was a self-contained story with a clear conclusion, especially one that was conceived as a single installment, it doesn't leave a lot open for a continuation. Also if the original was a surprise hit, your really asking a lot trying to capture lightning in a bottle a second time.
But, a creative enough writer can always overcome this, and movies that create an interesting enough world can usually find another story to set in that world to make a sequel interesting.

The series did definitely get more childish with each new entry. To the point where the TV series was aimed directly at pre-schoolers on Cartoon Network. It's unfortunate as the first movie dealt with the concepts of death and loss and being a defenseless creature trying to survive in a harsh, cruel environment. And even the second movie was a tad more mature.
What I remember vividly the most about this movie is the box cover:

I just love how the bully is in the tar pit, sinking and with a distressed look on his face while everyone is just laughing and smiling. Aaah, enjoying the suffering of others. A great thing to show off in children's media! :D
-
02.19.2011 - 22:43 | crackmonster99They should've stopped after the first movie. They severely watered down the series as it went on.

02.20.2011 - 02:42 | Redfield4ever1. Freddy vs Jason isn't a sequel to any of the two franchises and hardly matches the original Nightmare should you compare the two.
2. How can you even begin to say that Matrix Reloaded is better than the original? it's just... WRONG!

Agreed. Here are some literary sequels that were better than the originals, or at least just as good, like "Ring of Endless Light" by Madeleine L'Engle (sequel to "Meet the Austins"), "The Castle of Lyr" by Lloyd Alexander (which, for me, was even scarier than "The Black Cauldron"), "Imago" by Octavia E. Butler (arguably the best of the Xenogenesis trilogy), and the sequels to "Northern Lights"/"Golden Compass."
Then again, it's much easier for me to make a list of book sequels that disappointed me:
*"The Messenger" by Lois Lowry
*"The Book of Sorrows" by Walter Wangerin (which should be subtitled, "The Book in Which Almost Everyone You Got to Know in 'The Book of the Dun Cow,' Plus Half a Coyote Family, Dies")
*"Many Waters" by Madeleine L'Engle (if this story doesn't inspire a whole bunch of erotic and/or shonen ai manga, I don't know which of her books will)
*"R.T., Margaret, and the Rats of NIMH" by Leslie Conly

Not that I enjoyed it a great deal. The animals are too anthropromorphized (they live in houses, unlike the animals in the better written 1970's animal allegories "Watership Down" and "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH"), the author glosses over that his rooster protagonist has a HAREM, the protagonists' offspring are all male, and while John Wesley Weasel may have been "subversive" at the time, he'd probably be voiced by Chris Rock in the all-too-possible animated movie version Walden Films might produce...Honestly, reading the two books made C.S. Lewis' "That Hideous Strength" seem like "Wallace & Gromit's Grand Day Out" by comparison.

But again, there are actually lots sequels that are nearly as good if not just as good as the origonal, Aladdin and the King Of Thieves comes to mind. (the one after the bad one of Jafar's Return, I think they just wanted a movie so the guy playing Jafar could sing cause they said they were disappointed they didn't give him a villain song in the first one)
-
02.19.2011 - 23:11 | marlyonamaThat was a tar pit he jumped into. It doesn't look like tar, it's water!
And guess what, they now have a TV series instead of movies. I just wish they end the whole franchise with a meteor coming down to drive them to extinction.

Y'know, this is something that occurred to me while watching this review. They refer to the area outside of the Great Valley as the "Mysterious Beyond", right?
Except it isn't mysterious.
THEY ALL PASSED THROUGH IT TO ENTER THE VALLEY.
Also, if the Valley is so impenetrable, how did all of those grass eating dinosaurs (many of them not the most dexterous creatures, either) get into the Valley in the first place?!
Hell, Littlefoot's Crew had a freaking FINAL BATTLE about 10 feet on the other side of that wall. They had to draw up a fairly complex strategy to both lure Sharptooth out of his cavern and not die. They should be fairly familiar with that area.
I guess it would make sense if they mean the area beyond the mountains on the OTHER end of the Valley, but that's never really pointed out, is it? And even if they ARE referring to the other side, wouldn't that have been where the rest of the dinosaurs entered anyway, thanks to the continental divide? Are they referring to the east or west? Jesus, how many deadly meat eaters are surrounding this place?
Actually--how DO they keep the Sharpteeth out?! Sharptooth was literally camping right outside their front door. That thing worked its way out of a freaking CONTINENT WIDE CHASM. It hunted the heroes for possibly HUNDREDS OF MILES. It couldn't smell the smorgasbord on the other side of the mountain? And won't the Sharpteeth DIE if they don't have plant eaters to eat? How are they breeding? Why aren't they turning on each other? What will stop the plant eaters from eventually overpopulating the valley, thus stripping it of greenery and dooming themselves?! What will happen to our heroes?! Is that why they stopped making movies after XII?! Do they starve to death?! Oh Jesus!
Oh god, it's going to be like Grave of the Fireflies, isn't it?! It's going to scar me for the rest of my life, won't it?!

Ah, the memories. Glad THAT'S over.
You know, you should review Lion King 2. It's another sequel that lobotomized its franchise (*cough* Kiara *cough*), one of a film that was considered the pinnacle of the Disney Renaissance.
-
02.20.2011 - 12:35 | Vismutti
Not to defend Lion King 2 but... it was bad but at least it was decent. It had some good animation and a pretty decent story and even some really powerful moments like Nuka's death which absolutely breaks my heart even now, despite the fact that he was a villain and a rather annoying one at that. I just can't help but to whimper pathetically when he says "Sorry, mother, I tried." right before dying.
Compare that to Mulan 2 or worse; Beauty and the Beast Enchanted Christmas. Both were just absolute abominations.
