02.13.2011 - 00:10 | zyphronLand Before Time sequels, my sad, sad, sad early childhood in a nutshell. I grew up with these movies and admittedly loved them, but I was only 4-6 around that time, so I liked everything I saw. But I remember these movies well enough to know that you're in for a great time.

I think what makes me made is they add music to sequels of a movie that didn't have music numbers to begin with. The first movie the lack of music numbers does not take away from it. I dunno it just really bugged me as a kid. It just didn't have the heart.
I think they kinda started to go down hill with the movies. The plots got more and more uninventive. They even tried a cartoon but that didn't last very long. I think the biggest insult was when they had Sara's dad marry some Mary sue. I was like wait what happened to Sara's mother? Then the last was seemed like it was trying to hard.

I'm stoked that you're doing more reviews! You definitely have a knack for it. I'm looking forward to the next installment.
I almost felt kind of bad for Juno, though.

My thoughts exactly. And I just have to say, I feel kind of annoyed about how the reviewers bash this one when it's at least a decent straight to video movie on its own, even if it's not even nearly worth The Land Before Time name that it bears.
The third one was also okay. It's after seeing the fourth one that I realized the series had seriously lost its point.
I have to admit, though, I really wish someone who grew up with the sequels reviewed the second and the third. I'd just prefer to see them judged more fairly and not just compared to the original film. It's obvious to everybody that they're not on THAT level but... two and three really aren't that bad. They were fun to watch as a kid. Maybe I should really re-watch them and see if they still hold up for me.
Anyway I pretty much consider the sequels a totally separate series from the original. That's the only way you can watch them anyway. First rule of TLBT sequels: There is no continuity.

I agree with Visumutti. While no Land Before Time 1 by any means..the 2nd and 3rd aren't that bad. It wasn't until the 4th that they started to be bad. I was in denial so much I saw the 5th and I think the 6th as well (though sense I owned the 4th, anytime I watched it, I fast forwarded past any singing, and when watching the 5th and 6th, sometimes muted it during the singing). But after that, I quit.
At first, I was just tired of it and thought having more sequals was a bad idea because it was ridiculous to have MORE after 6. Then I realized how bad 4 onwards were...and eventually somewhat outgrew 2 and 3, despite my nostalgia for them. Don't believe I ever saw past 6 though.

Damn, so far my total sequel count is at two. God those songs are awful, I remembered the plot of that movie but never the singing, did I repress the memory of them? Guh, thinking about that unearthed something else. I'm sure I'm just imagining horrible things but... didn't one of the later sequels bring in a distaff counterpart for Little foot?

haha, I love it. I watched this with morbid fascination, indeed. I LOVED the first movie as a kid. I remember peeing myself with excitment just seeing the ads for it when it came out. (yeah...I'm old)
I've got my own kid now, who also enjoyed the first movie. I've denied the existence of the 9000+ sequels and other related junk, never allowing them anywhere near my house or my kid cause I'll be damned if I'm going to allow my childhood to be raped over direct-to-video singing kiddie garbage! Now, under the cover of late-night I can see what a horrific shit-fest this series turned into. I'm sure it only got worse from here!

its a total secret of nihm 2. Take an amazing, dramatic, wonderfully written and ORIGINAL story (for a kids movie anyway) and write a sequel that is basically a poor copy of the traditional disney musical formula, rinse and repeat...EIGHT TIMES...that's how many LBT sequels there were right? I lost track after the 7th one because I was a teenager by then and realized that I wasn't enjoying them anymore, just watching them out of a sense of tradition.

How sad it is, if only good animated movies could have good sequels..but I guess thats something kept more for video games..well, in most cases I suppose..
I have to admit, I used to like these movies when I was younger, but now I see the original, the one I originally liked the least, is the most superior of them.

Well as a child, I grew up not only watching the first film but also the sequels as well. Now of course being a child, I didn't quite take notice to the huge differences between the Original and further sequels, which got cutesier and cutesier with time. But I'm gonna defend this one on a couple points you made because it is still a great children's movie that doesn't treat children like idiots. The Original treated kids on a much more serious level of course but the sequels are simply continuing the story of the great characters created in the Original, except now they're living in a peaceful time where they aren't struggling for survival in a harsh world.
You claimed that there was no reason to assume to Egg eating dinosaurs were "villains", in the eyes of herbivore Dinosaurs your natural villain is Sharp-toothed dinosaurs like the T-Rex because they're carnivores and so they need to eat herbivores in order to survive. In the same sense, egg eating dinosaurs like Oviraptor would also be villains because their main food source is eggs. Though stealing and eating an egg isn't nearly as devious as eating the dinosaur itself but it's basically the same thing since you're eating the fetus of a would-be dinosaur, which is villainous in the eyes of a herbivore, especially considering that they're petty thieves.
Now what I think is an interesting element to this film is that we get to see the other side of the food-chain and their "humanity". The Sharp-teeth parents are seen searching for their lost child and showing love towards that child when it was found. They also have compassion and go out of their way to repay Little-foot for returning their child. Considering how in the first film the Sharp-teeth were portrayed as mindless monsters that would stop at nothing for a meal, even at the expense of mothers and defenseless children, this is a big switch and it shows that it is simply in the nature of Sharp-teeth to eat meat and they simply have no choice in that but it doesn't keep them from having human feelings and honour like the other dinosaurs. For a kids' movie, I think thats pretty deep and though it is over-simplifying to the point of ridiculousness; I feel the film does a decent job of teaching the audience about basic life lessons which is something you should want your children's movie to contain instead of mindless fun or entertainment.
I understand the drop in "quality" life lessons and dramatic integrity from the first film but for a direct-to-dvd/vhs sequel; I think it does more than enough to deserve credit and not be bashed for having children making stupid decisions, which should really be expected.

You've pretty much covered everything I wanted to address. As someone who watched most of the sequel movies, I can admit that they greatly declined in quality over time and completely missed the point of the original, but it feels like this review series is going to be one gigantic rant about "everything beyond the original is total garbage," which is an extremely unfair and childish stance on the matter.
Also, the Egg song is awesome.

Yeah... Well, I kinda get MarzGurl's view because she clearly hasn't been a big fan of cutesy cartoon movies at any point and she is a huge fan of the original and she didn't see this as a kid so it must feel especially atrocious to her. I understand why she wouldn't like it because it's not at all the kind of movie she would like.
Buuut, as a reviewer I think you should remember to distance yourself from it a little and realize that while you don't like it, someone else might. It's okay to say you hate it but it's a different thing altogether to say it's garbage and nobody should like it. I mean, even NC is rather forgiving towards many movies in the end despite his character which is something I really respect about him. Not to say I know what Doug would think about this one but I'd imagine he would let it pass as a cute children's movie. I think this is way better than The Secret of NIMH 2, for example.
And it IS a cute movie, come on. And while I agree on many points with MarzGurl, it's not really offensive or totally stupid either. It has some interesting points and it's really good for smaller children who would find the original movie too scary.
Of course you could argue that it was pointless to make this a sequel to the original film... Why couldn't they just make it a different dinosaur movie? (And the answer is, of course, the title sells better.)
Edit: Oh and yeah, the songs weren't horrible either. They could have been much, much worse anyway. I actually kinda like them too. Not that you'd need them but whatever.

When I was a kid I saw the original Land Before Time countless time. Then I got to see the sequels up to the seventh one, I think, but I really can't recall their plots. This is the main feature of the sequels of this series: they're vapid and shallow kid flick which are forgotten by the end of the week.
There's something shown in this video that really bothers me: in the credit scenes we see Cera's little siblings, but they're just too tiny! Cera's size hasn't changed much from the first movie, and she was almost a newborn, like the others. Now the new babies are roughly as big as one of her legs: how much smaller can they get? It's just a detail, and probably I'm nitpicking, but it shows an annoying lack of attention and consistancy.
But, again, we're talking about a direct-to-video sequel...

02.13.2011 - 04:10 | DMasterI regret to say...when I really strain my memory of childhood...I did in fact watch this one over the first...several times over. I long since learned my mistake, at least since I graduated elementary school, but it's still a bit of an old shame.
How you will manage this Kaylyn...I really don't know. I hope you don't go too far with it, or at least pace yourself; I really fear for your sanity with this! And...Juno's too, I...guess...
Regarding THIS movie, though, it is indeed incredibly childish, but not as bad I expected it to be. Considering that Disney has done much worse with its sequels this was a decent follow up. The movies that followed it, though, could have been much better. The last one I saw was the one where we finally meet Little Foot's father, which was beyond stupid.
