I never saw the Ducktales movie all the way through, but A Goofy Movie, man that was good. The songs were good, the animation was good, and it even had some genuine suspense regarding the giant waterfall at the end. I'm still really mad the Powerline songs aren't allowed for individual purchase on I-tunes.
However, despite the humor and the like, the heart of the movie is the reconciliation of father and son, and how they use both nostalgia and understanding to repair their relationship is very powerful, particularly nearer to the end.
I think the most powerful moment of that movie was in the rapids where Goofy finally confronts Max about his behavior, giving us this gem of an exchange.
Max: "I'm NOT your little boy anymore dad! I've grown up! I've got my own life now!"
Goofy: "I know that! I JUST wanted to be part of it. (Max suddenly has a look of horrid understanding when he hears his father say that) You're my son Max. No matter how big you get, you'll always be my son."
As a son getting closer to leaving his own home, that strikes very dear to me in remembering the relations with my parents will change, but they're still the family I love.
A Goofy Movie was a great film, and I can't wait to see what you do with the rest of the month.

Disney parents have this odd tendency to be single, if there are any parents at all. Much of the time, they seem to be aunts or uncles, who also tend to be single. I'm sure there's a good reason for this, but I have no clue what it could be.
Case in point: Ducktales. Huey, Dewey, and Louie are Scrooge's nephews. They're also Donald's nephews. Even Donald is Scrooge's nephew. Either that family is very lax in their familial name calling, or something is dreadfully wrong somewhere along the line.
My one complaint: Webby isn't Scrooge's niece. Webby is Mrs. Beakley's granddaughter. As for where her parents are...
Of course, the way Webby throws around 'Uncle Scrooge', it's an easy enough mistake to make.
And the way she also calls him 'Uncle Scrooge' hopefully explains the Duck/McDuck family tree: that's just what most people call him.
I'm thinking way too hard about this.

Actually there is a picture of Donald Duck's family tree. This image.
http:// d3uwin5q170wpc.cloudfront .net/photo/8423_700.jpg
Many of the characters are exclusive to the comics but Don Rosa (the artist) is very spesific about continuity to the older comics by Carl Barks who created Scrooge McDuck so the links between Scrooge, Donald, Huey, Dewey and Louie can be applied to the cartoons too since DuckTales was also based on Cark Barks' comics.
You need to read The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck sometime. You get to learn a lot about how Scrooge got his fourtune plus you meet Donald's parents who are hillarious.

I know it's simply a matter of opinion and MarzGurl is entitled to hers BUT....
The BS about "An Extremely Goofy Movie" being passable is malarkey. I personally find it superior to it's predecessor. And considering "A Goofy Movie" is damn good to start with....well, you can imagine how good the sequel is.
FYI, Watch it on DVD and not TV. There's a sequence that is cut from TV airings due to similarities to 9/11. Keep in mind "Extremely Goofy Movie" was released in February of 2000.

I love A Goofy Movie!
Definitely one of my top favorite animated kids movie's for my time.
Up there with the Disney version of Robin Hood, Fox and the Hound, Aladdin and The brave little Toaster.
I'm 25 years old and that movie still cracks me up to this day.
Love the whole possum farm/ranch thing, hilarious.
"Who's your favorite possum!? LESTER!!!"
Great vid by the way.

Unfortunately for me, growing up it was Nickelodeon or nothing. Now, I did see the two Goofy movies(but man, that was ages ago), but I don't think I've ever seen an episode of Ducktales. I've watched Darkwing Duck and Talespin, but never Ducktales. Just never happened. But since I'm an animation collector now, I intend to fix that soon.
Another thing to note about DVD releases. A Goofy Movie was made in widescreen, but its Region 1 released pan-and-scanned it to fullscreen, while the UK release is in the original aspect ratio. The second one was made in fullscreen since it was intended to only be seen on TVs, and this was before widescreen television. The Ducktales movie is released in widescreen on DVD worldwide.
How'd you get fullscreen for these reviews, Marz? Youtube?

When you mentioned the Ducktales movie in the preview for this, I thought I had missed out on something. I didn't recall ever seeing a full length movie for that series before.
But after seeing a few scenes from it here, it all came flooding back to me. I was sitting here with this damn dopey smile on my face for a full 3 minutes or so because of that; recalling bits and pieces of a great movie that I had completely forgotten about.
Really, thank you for that MarzGurl.
And I agree with the darker parts of A Goofy Movie. Even with all of the humor and song in that movie, it had some really emotional moments. And I have to admit, the animation still looks superb.

Wow!
I'm really looking forward to the rest of this series Marzgirl!
I was in my late teens-early 20's when all the great Disney Afternoon shows came on and I loved them all (with a few exceptions like Quack Pack and Bonkers).
But my favorite of all the shows was Talespin which is ( for me ) the most under-appreciated gem in the Disney Afternoon crown.
Complex characters like Kit and some damm good animation really made for a remarkable show. I hope you get a chance to talk about it a little bit in the review!
And yea, An Extremly Goofy Movie wasn't that great, but at least it gave fans some closure to the Goof Troop characters: Goofy finds someone new to love, Max graduates and probably marries Roxanne, etc. Shame we'll never find out exactally what happened to Peg and Pistol from the series, but the running 'divorced and got the hell away from Pete' fan theory pretty much seems the best shot.
Thanks so much for doing this series! Can't wait to see what's next!

I grew up on Disney Afternoon and I just didn't care for Goof Troop. I think I was getting to be "too cool" for cartoons at that point.
DuckTales had always been my favorite of Disney Afternoon. I saw the movie but only a couple times right when it was released on video; I just didn't have the opportunity to see it after that. I barely remember anything about it except that I loved Christopher Lloyd's performance.
I watched A Goofy Movie for the first and only time a couple weeks ago. It was ok... I think I was subconsciously prepared to not like it since I had chosen to not be a fan of the original show so many years ago. It took a bit to draw me in, but I did enjoy it, but I don't particularly wish to see it again unless I'm compelled to.
Mostly I was tickled to hear Pat Buttram's voice as the Possum Park Emcee! Hearing and recognizing him (Back to the Future III: "Must'a gotten that shirt off'n a dead Chinee.") compelled me to actually learn his name.

I just ordered Ducktales the Movie from Disney Movie Rewards, it comes packaged with Donald in Mathmagicland and was only a few hundred points. My wife and I have been slowly buying up the Ducktales, Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers, and Darkwing Duck DVD sets for our 4 year old. The thing that kind of sux about all of them though is they quit distribution before releasing the last several episodes of each show.

12.10.2010 - 09:37 | Moreno XIt is a shame that Ducktales movie flop at the theaters. Up to this day, I still don't believe that a TV-tie in was the reason Disney decide to not make the mistakes with the other Disney cartoon shows like there was a Chip 'n' Dale movie and such. I'm not kidding, every TV shows that ever get it's own movie can do well in theaters; Rugrats had its first two movies and both did well that kept the TV show running with new characters that were introduced in those movies like new rugrats - Dylan and Kimi. So, what you're saying MG if a TV-tie in is what made Ducktales movie flop in spite it's popularity and had so many fans of it's TV show, what sense does that make? Did the fans of the show didn't knew there was a movie based on a show or what? As a kid, I was fortunate to see them in theaters and then watched them on VHS a lot of times. Now about finding a Ducktales movie on DVD, I was fortunate enough to find a old video store across the street from my college I attend in Downtown Toronto, and boy it was cheap enough for me to buy. The VHS version of Ducktales movie only cost $5.00.
The Goofy Movie is my absolute favorite and I have the Disney Gold Classic Collection version. I suppose it was reasonable enough to not have Peg, Pistol and others to appear in this movie to avoid the "TV-tie in" mistake and create a original set and story. If you know this MG, the fans of Goof Troop had theories that the Goofy Movie takes place years after the show which fans were lead to believe that Peg divorce Pete, had all the money Pete had and "work hard" for; everything that Pete had with Peg is no more. Oh, and Peg took Pistol with her. If you have time MG, there was a Devianart fanfic art and story that you want to see and read. This is what I think sums up the reason Peg and Pistol didn't appear on Goofy Movie and its sequel.
Here it is, it's titled "Rouge Divorce": http:// browse.deviantart.com/? q=Goof Troop&order=9& offset=264#/d22x8da
Speaking of An Extremely Goofy Movie, I have to disagree with you MG. I saw the sequel a couple of times on YouTube and I think it's a worthy sequel to the original. Is it better than A Goofy Movie? No, never will be. But it is good enough to be called a sequel...which you will be surprised that fans of the Goof Troop franchise believes that the sequel is great conclusion to Goof Troop (Crossed-fingers, fans are now begging Disney to do a 3rd Goofy Movie to see all the characters from the TV show, especially Peg, Pistol, Chainsaw and Waffles). With that said, I did enjoy the sequel regardless it was a waterdown, slow-pacing but it was great in storytelling of Max, PJ, Bobby, Pete and Goofy. We get more story build-ups and emotional moments, leaving some plot-holes for us theorizing any connections from between the TV show and Goofy movies' timeline. Odd, huh?
But hey, it's your opinion and enjoyed your review.

12.10.2010 - 08:11 | MadClawMannnnnI was a huge fan of Duck's Tail and I never knew there was a Duck's Tail Movie. Maybe, I was too young at the time to realize there a movie out at the time.
Was there any talk about a Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Ranger movie?
Great series MarzGurl!!!

Ahhhh for the good old days of simple yet entertaining stories, awesome action sequences, and great artistry. gone gone are these in favor of bland characters, regurgitated stories we've seen for the last decade or 3 and an art style ripped from the pages of an 8 year old's doodle book.
I saw both of these classics in the theater. if they would have kept making them, I for one would have kept going. for their time both movies were brilliant examples of taking something simple and making it amazing. I always hoped they'd get around to making either a "Talespin" or "Gizmo Duck" movie.
Was I the only one???

I love A Goofy movie! I remember a used to had it on VHS...and watch it over and over and over again. Plus search in Youtube for After Today live in action... theres one that starts with the movie cartoons and then turns into the real world ...watch it is great. Plus is made with others countries dubs so you can hear how the song sounds in other places.
-
I know. The After Today Live version is FREAKIN' amazing. Those people really put a lot of effort to make it right, and it did. At first, I didn't knew there was a live-action version until JesuOtaku's Youtube account who goes by the name Husse67 and she favorited it that led me see what she is doing on Youtube. So yeah, I must thank her for that. Again, those guys on After Today live really did amazing, and I can't imagine they are now tired of going through all that. They should get more viewership on YouTube than what they have now: 647,727(english version)? Seriously, 647,727 views? These people, personally, are better to watch and enjoyable than Justin Bieber and, dare I say this, the cast from Glee.... That's saying something.
