It's nice that you're being fair and logical here rather than just bashing things here. And thank GOD you mentioned Funky Cops. I actually loved that, it was like an animated seventies buddy cop movie. Do you know if the rest of the series was ever dubbed over? I might go back and try to check it out. Also had no idea Cubix was Korean, loved that, too, had some great toys. TMNT... It introduced me to the Mirage books, and that alone makes it bad ass. You should do a review of that '03 and '87 crossover, Turtles Forever. Enjoyed this little series, hope to see something similar soon.

09.26.2010 - 15:00 | HichcootI also love Funky Cops! The art style its really cool and different!
Also i remember WMAC Masters, it was cool when I was a kid.
There was a guy called Ho Sung Pak, it was cool seeing him because he was Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat 1 and Liu Kang in MK2!

Baring the Winx club (as I just had far too much testosterone to handle sitting through that show at all) I've seen pretty much every show you mentioned here, and while Viva Pinata and Cubix were... iffy for me, I enjoyed them all.
And I was one of those people who did enjoy watching funky cops and was pretty sad when it was so abruptly removed from the programming block. *sigh*
Again, very nice video, and I did enjoy your month-long look at their business. I hope you'll consider doing something like this again at a later date.

I've also seen most of the shows you mentioned here and I didn't think they were that bad. I knew 4Kids was behind most of them, but not Viva Pinata, so I guess you learn something new every day. =)
Even if they have done some pretty nice things, I can never fully get behind 4Kids. For me at least, the bad things they've done far outweigh the good. However, like you're going to do, I'll give them a chance now and see what they do. They can't fully make it up in my eyes, but they can try.
I'm sad to see this series end Marzgurl. It was nicely put together and I enjoyed watching it. In fact, I think you should do other things of this nature. Maybe make a series of videos about most of the big anime licensing companies. I think that could be pretty cool. Whatever you decide to do, keep making videos and we'll keep enjoying them. =D

Guh, that Cubits flash reboot thing sounds like that dreadful American GCI sequel to Voltron. ::shudder:: T_T
Viva la Claymation! Death to CGI!
Fuhu, what next? A gritty CGI or flash amerime reboot of Carmen Sandiego?
Tell me about it. Do you know how much editing Nelvana had to do with Cardcaptor Sakura?
------------------------- ------------
*Technically the Clow cards are Clow's children, so they're related to Sakura, so any crushes are incestuous.
*Eriol is Clow & Sakura's father is also Clow, so when Eriol flirst with Sakura, Clow is hitting on his daughter.
*Syao-Ran, Sakura, & Mei-Ling are all cousins.
*Ruby is a genderless being with a male form, based on Shazna's Izam, whom is a real life crossdresser.
*CLAMP says that Touya & Yukito/Yue are an official couple.
*Tomoyo & her mother are both lesbians.
*Touya once dated his teacher.
*Sakura's teacher Yoshiyuki is engaged to her underaged frind Rika.
*The series was aimed at young women, but Nelvana's target audience was young boys (at least that's what a representitive told me in an email).
*Changed names, changed music, missing episodes, hide Syao-Ran's crush on Yukito, make Rika & the teacher less lovey-dovey, un-gay Tomoyo.

09.26.2010 - 02:29 | ScrEAMaPiLLarWhat about series intermingling with the Tsubasa in manga form. Yes I read ahead on One Manga shame on me.
-
09.26.2010 - 15:04 | HichcootYeah, I hate when animes throw a lot of gay characters, pedos, and incest just to be edgy. . .
Specially when they show that is ok to be a pedo if you love the little girl or something...
-
I don't see anything "wannabe-edgy" about having gay characters in a kid's show (then again, I'm pretty laissez-faire), but that whole "GAYS, PEDOS AND INCEST OH MY!" trifecta is kind of CLAMP's thing. Their raison d'être...so to speak. They love indulging in the "you love who you love, regardless of age/gender/time-space continuum" trope. (but Rika being engaged to their teacher Yoshiyuki is DOUCHE-CHILLY...and the fact that he's waiting for her to come of age makes it NO BETTER! :uhh:)
FYI, in Japan cousin-loving is just generally thought of as no big deal.

09.26.2010 - 02:27 | ScrEAMaPiLLarHey great job on this little mini series on 4 Kids. If possible and I know you get lots of flack from people. It would be great to see more specials like this.
Ah here is a suggestion, how bout an analysis of Naruto, Inuyasha, Bleach and DBZ. Comparing how very long the series became. I don't know what the theme would be just a suggestion. Again great job.

I think Winx Club had two English dubs. One was done by a Canadian studio and the other was by 4kids.
I saw an episode of the Canadian one and...the acting wasn't very good, so maybe that's the one you're remembering? (Not that the 4kids ones are much better though, but I didn't watch the show quite that frequent to really notice the acting. I was distracted by the sparkles)

09.26.2010 - 02:48 | TarlinI do also have to admit to enjoying the TMNT show they made. It was dark and interesting and just plain fun to watch without insulting the intelligence of the children or even older audiences watching.... That is until they aired TMNT: Fast Forward. The season, and the one following it (Back to the Sewer), was a MASSIVE shark jump experience. Not only had they totally skipped an entire season, which was VERY good and seemed to be made only half canon through the rest of the series, but started to devolve in writing ability with characters like Cody Jones, April and Casey's obscenely wealthy descendant. I'll admit to having sighed massive relief when the final movie, Turtles Forever, came out and returned to the original style, both for itself and the 86 series. So really they had five great seasons and two sharks even the Fonz wouldn't jump.
-
09.26.2010 - 02:56 | EvilAshTwinHoly crap, I had completely forgotten about WMAC Masters. I remember watching that when it was new. I never knew 4kids was the mind behind that.
-
09.26.2010 - 03:05 | Mizu Takishima
I wouldn't mind 4kids licensing anime within their target demographics if it weren't for these two things:
1) They never release unedited versions (Unless that site you're talking about has some of their series unedited, then ignore this part)
2) Even if it's a very tame anime for young children, (like Ojamajo Doremi) they'll still make pretty massive changes/edits to it.
But for some reason TMNT is allowed to be dark/edgy/use real weapons :v It's a double standard I say!
Anyway, great job with this last vid! (Not that your other vids were bad, I just have no critiques for the way you ended it~ XB )

Unlike you(Marzgurl), I can't bring myself to watch the new "TMNT" cartoon. Maybe I'm just too old to change.
Anyway, good job spreading knowledge, though I have to say, for a series called "Translation TERRORS" there was very little terror involved.
Maybe emphasize their *Terrible* jobs a bit more next time...

The 2003 TMNT series is HIGHLY underrated and it blows my mind that some people would go into great length of how the 1987 series is so much better than this one. It’s like condemning Batman: The Animated Series for not being anything like the Adam West TV Series. I have nothing against fans of the 1987 series that act like decent people, but damn, this show needs to be given a chance.
Now the follow-ups Fast Forward and Back to the Sewers were pretty lackluster as they lose the appeal that made the 2003 series so great. Turtles Forever is an impressive send-off to not only all the TMNT series but to 4Kids itself.
Hopefully Nickelodeon will release the 2003 series on DVD-R similar to their release of the Invader Zim series.
-
09.26.2010 - 12:24 | NCscriticmaybe it's because I don't know a thing about how TV channel business works, but why doesn't Nickelodeon just show TMNT on air? it would be a shit load better than anything else that's on that channel nowadays.
and I agree with Japan; Animation is for story telling, NOT for raising your children!

TMNT 2K3 was very good series and I actually think that it was better than orginal. Granted that orginal TMNT still has its nostalgia value.
Funky Cops sounded (and looked) rather good. Besides who would not like from series about two cops with afros in 70's.
But scars that 4Kids has left with they dubs cuts remains. Like MarzGurl said most westerners see animation meaning that it was made for children.
Thats not only different thing between western countries and Japan. Japanese dosen't seem to underestimate they children so even some things that make for children are actually more complex. For example popular Kamen Rider series. It was made for kids but it dosen't underestimate audience.
In fact those can be very well be also watched by adults. They are most times dark and people surely die in them. In that sense japanese are less strict with what they allow children seeing and subjects like death are not considered being taboo to show to children.

09.26.2010 - 04:42 | ClawfingerLol. 4Kids is gonna have a preetty rough time editing the later episodes of One Piece as it contains a bigheaded transexual with genderbending powers ^^
-
Just a little hint, 4Kids won't have a hard time with that. They won't even have to deal with it. Why? Funimation has had the rights for a while and redid the entire thing and, since it's only streaming on their website, I don't think they're going to bother with editting it. Just FYI, since you didn't seem to know.

Yes, animation is for kids American adults. Why don't they sit their kids in front of stuff like Simpsons and Family Guy then? I'm American, and I know how crazy that concept is.
TMNT ROCKED! It was a really awesome show, and it showed 4kids can do stuff right. I watched some of the other shows her, and the ones I did I liked also. I guess they just believe animé is the most adult brand of animation.

Oh c'mon, that show wasn't THAT bad. It at least should get points for having Tim Curry voice one of the villains.
Besides, I've seen much worse franchise reboots.
But why reboot Cubix? It's pretty much one of the black sheeps of 4Kids.

Well. No complaints this time. Great conclusion. =D I will, however, leave a few comments. Firstly, I've watched Viva Pinata, and it was a great show very faithful to the games. Not exactly one to make me obsess over, but watching one episode each weak was nice entertainment. Secondly, I've been watching Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds on Toonzaki (great place), and I did notice that the cleavage marks that are usually edited from Akiza have not been removed. But that's only one episode so far. Thirdly, why didn't you mention their decision to license Dinosaur King? That's an great example of an anime they chose well, since it's a show for kids in Japan as well, and there was almost no objectionable content in it. Some episodes of that were even entirely uncut.
-
09.26.2010 - 07:35 | Miniced4Kids didn't remove guns in Funky Cops AND made them-self shows with violences? Then why did they removed it from Animes? Are they racist or what? Oh, I forgot, they are. (Remember Popo)
-
09.26.2010 - 15:12 | HichcootMaybe because the owners of Funky Cops didn't let them do it. . . and the owners of other animes don't care as a long as they have their money. . .
I mean I'm not talking crap about the manga artists, just about the owners of the titles.
I mean Johnen Vazques created Invader Zim and he can't use the character because it belongs to Nickelodeon
-
I really enjoyed Cubix when I was younger and earlier this year I tried what you did to find episodes online. Wasn't gonna happen. I couldn't find them anywherem, even the 4kids website wasn't letting me watch.
Interested in this 'reboot' though, look forward to more on that.
Anyway, great 4kids month!
