I'm seriously the first person who's seen this? Wow. I think I'll hold off on voting until we get the next installment. I'm not certain if I can change my vote later.

I am of the exact same mind. 4Kids ...

Just the name makes me annoyed. I can understand what they were trying to do, but that doesn't excuse what they have done. They utterly ruined my favorite anime of all time and I, simply put, cannot forget that, not to mention all the other anime that were hurt. One Piece, and all the others, deserved far better than what they were given.

I'm looking foward to seeing you give 4Kids a bashing it so rightfully deserves. Nice work Marzgurl. =)

It's pretty unanimous that 4kids blows. SO HARD. Just because it's "4" kids, doesn't give you an excuse to do a shitty job. Even kids can tell when shit is shit.

Definitely looking forward to your butchering of the butcher.

=_= Yes, 4Kids changes a lot of stuff, but the end result is still entertaining and that's all that matters. :notfunny: I watch 4Kids anime to this day! :nuu: I like the openings! I liked the editing! (for the most part. I'll admit some of it was done poorly), and you know what else? I liked their dub of One Piece! :flame: Far more than the original!

YAY!!!! FINALLY SOMEONE TALKING ABOUT THE AWFUL 4KIDS RENDITIONS OF ANIME!!!!

Seriously if you add the fact that Hao has been changed to Zeke, and there is a character named Zeke in High School Musical (one of NC's most abhorred movies), you can get an even more butchered Anime Musical.....

don't believe me? this is a lyric I came up with by risking my own sanity of diving into the minds of the 4Kids heathens..... it is not pretty.....

[To the tune of "Another Irish Drinking Song" by Da Vinci's Notebook.]
I got the fire in my left hand and some onto my right!
Plus I got some around me, but still you wanna fight?
Oh right, I have more Furyoku than your mom and you!

Hello, long time fan, first time poster.

I'm a fan of your anime reviews and am interested to see someone taking an in-depth look at what makes 4kids so bad at what they do other than simply pointing out "bad translations". However I do wonder if you'll take a look a few cases where they have not messed up quite so badly.

In this case I refer to ShamanKing, where in no way am I saying the 4kids edit was good, but it was not outrageously bad in the way the One Piece edit was. The characters were surprisingly in character with their original versions and only relatively small edits made. True Hao's name was changed to an American Zeke, and Yoh's love of riceballs was changed to Cheeseburgers. But to a large extent the plot was kept the same including the rather dark character of Faust attempting to resurrect his love from the dead. (oh dear I said the D word), And 'Zeke' forcibly pulling out and eating Yoh's soul.

In large I was wondering if you will be taking a look into what makes some edits so over the top and some not so noticeable? if there is some defining nice they choose to make in the sand?

Again, thank you for posting your excellent videos.

I agree with you about their dubbing of Shaman King not being TOO bad - at least in the last half a dozen or so episodes. I remember one of them came across as containing Hao's spirit of fire killing off two of three attackers on screen, Hao then taunting the survivor by saying "wasn't there three of you...?" before killing him. The scene then ends with the SoF holding the three souls to his mouth, ready to eat them. In another episode, Hao screams "BURN!" before having the SoF engulf someone (who's sitting in the SoF's hand) in flames and then at the end of the episode, the SoF is eating her spirit, with lovely crunching sounds. My point is, I felt their handling towards the end wasn't too bad; it allowed them to include stuff that would please the anime fan but not come across too bad to the parents.

I agree censorship is needed to a degree, but as I use to say "If you need to make all these changes, are you sure it's suitable 4Kids?"
• dvd6441  - 4Kids and TMNT
Let’s look at the bright side.

4Kids made the 2003 TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) series and Turtles Forever which are among the most memorable action NON-anime cartoons I have seen in the 2000s. =D

Though 4Kids also made TMNT Fast Forward and TMNT Back to the Sewers. =(

Yup, One Piece is a perfect example for what they did to openings. I mean, a pirate rap? Granted, it was catchy, but it's the principle of the thing.

If you're looking for a microcosm of their work, though, I'd turn my focus to Pokemon. The gradual descent of that show is a true example of 4Kids' idiocy at work.

*sigh*, I remember 4 kids... when I was little, I used to watch a lot of their stuff, specifically pokemon (yes, yes, I know), but as I grew older, I found that something didn't look right about some of their products, like with Dragon Ball Z and Naruto. then I found out what anime was REALLY like. Looking back @ 4Kids, they basically ass raped everything that was good about some of these shows! But 4Kids is way behind me (ok, ok, I occasionally wonder if 4kids will actually be true to the source material, but NOOOOOOO they never are T_T ) so screw 4kids, I gotta go watch Adult Swim

Can't wait to see how you cover all the different things 4Kids has screwed up, and this was a nice little preview into what you're covering later on.

I'm wondering what openings and closings you're going to cover next.

Looking forward to the vids! I recall flipping on to anime on TV (back when I had cable TV), realizing that it was a 4Kids release, and running away in horror. . .

WHAT I HATE IS WHEN THEY DON'T RELEASE ENTIRE SEASONS!!! SCREW THOSE CRAPPY 3 episode DVD's... I WANT ALL OF IT!!!

We now need all these anime re-dubbed... thanks 4kids... and thanks CN for killing anime TV as we know it...

I mean... WHY IN THE HELL DID DISNEY BUY NARUTO?! Yeah... and yet it's not really airing... poor Viz... man... wish somebody would give them distribution on TV...

I think we need an ANIMATION NETWORK in this country... we've lost SO much ground in the medium in just a few years... I'm still SHOCKED at the label on my Looney Tunes DVD's that says they aren't for kids... NOT FOR KIDS?! I don't want to live in a world where all kids get to watch is crap like Dora... at least Avatar is there to fill a small void, and that new re-boot of DBZ...

Well... yeah... animation needs serious help, and not just Japanese animation.

Wait, I get it now! 4Kids name is meant to be read like "For Kids" as in they make shows for kids!

Ha ha ha... God I'm slow.

After hearing some of the things 4Kids did to various anime (such as one scene in Sonic X where a sign said, in plain English: "The house of Amy Rose", but was censored with a blank sign), I think at very least this will be interesting to watch. Can't wait for part 2!

=_= :sigh: Not this crap again. :talkbiz: Listen carefully knucklehead, If censoring parts of the anime is what it takes for me to see my beloved One Piece on the air again, then so be it. I did'nt even know it WAS changed. :uhh: Back in the day ( -_- ugh) I saw some anime that at the time, I barely either got or understood. and the stuff I liked (back before One Piece or Naruto), Zoids, Cyborg 009, the Gundam series during and after G, Of course anything associated with DBZ, and Yuyu Hakasho, I saw, liked, and people just did'nt pay attention whether I watched the stuff or not.I doubt they even cared. I watched my favorites and people left me be about it. =) And at night no matter whether or not my day was good, I enjoyed watching Toonami. What ever 4Kids gave us, I usually loved (Fighting Foodons,Shaman King). I liked the shows the way I saw them, and would'nt have them anyway other way. But maybe I'm just some nostalgic fool who remembers sitting at the table of his parents old house some saturday morning eating Blueberry muffin tops cereal and watching One piece on FoxBox. :drunk: But those just my fond teenhood memories. :music: Like I said before, You're entitled to your opinion. Good night and good morning. Submitted for your approval (or not, whichever works for you :nuu: ),Gamermage, Sargeant Gamer and 2nd class artist. =D

4Kids's edited series far, far beyond what was necessary for airing for children on American television. They didn't simply translate and rebroadcast series; they completely transformed series into their own visions. Many of their edits involved "white-washing" series as to remove nearly all foreign cultural references, something definitely not necessary to ensure the airing of their shows.

In addition to this, the company refused to do the simplest thing in the world to appease fans: include subbed and uncut versions in their DVDs. Certainly simply adding subtitles over otherwise unedited video is much easier than removing every trace of Japanese from signs. I can only believe the company felt adding these to DVDs would somehow hurt the brands they worked so hard to develop, brands of varying unfaithfulness to their sources.

No one's arguing over the necessity of edits for series to see broadcast, nor is anyone claiming getting what we did get on TV wasn't successful. The issue rests in the extent of and intent of 4Kids editing.

So you actually thought that Helmeppo was holding a giant hammer gun over Coby? Or that Bellemere didn't die, but was thrown into a dungeon instead?

Or that Don Krieg shot poison...SUCTION CUPS, instead of metal darts?

None of this rang any bells for you? None of it?
• KaiserDragon
One Piece was edited to the point of not being the same series anymore. It wasn't just the fact blood no longer existed. the series was changed, they skipped 30% of the canon series; Laboon and Little Garden for instance. Both of which are very important stories to the series, to the point that it effects people on the main crew. They changed the name of people and places. Smoker became Chaser, Zoro became Zolo, Loguetown became Roguetown. And dont give me that crap that Roguetown makes more sense. Loguetown is the town of the beginning and the end. LOGUE means story Prologue Epilogue you know the story before the story and the one afte the story... THE BEGINNING AND THE END.... RAJNASJKL: BVDLKBVDSLKDVSDV end rage moment sorry.

4kids is the reason the series did badly, in japan it is one of the most popular anime/manga series. full of adventure, fighting, and humor. the 4kids version had none of that.
• Lotus Prince
avatar
Most insulting of all is the fact that according to 4Kids' canon, Bellemere is still alive, and just in a dungeon somewhere. Way to give your fans false hope, when canonically Arlong shot Bellemere in the head.
