05.19.2011 - 23:10 | Pye Like EyeI'm torn between laughing at 4Kids and actually feeling sorry for them. On one hand, they are going through rough times, and that does suck. On the other, there's really nobody to blame but 4Kids for it all, and their past ineptitude at dubbing anime has shown that it would probably be better if they didn't get to work on anything else.

We've seen this happen in the US anime industry before, and it didn't end well for anyone. Care to take a guess who it was?
Harmony Gold and Robotech.
HG got the exclusive North American rights to release Macross as Robotech here. The result? HD is all but dead, Bandai and Yamato can't release anything directly from most of the newer parts of the Macross franchise to a huge market, Yamato, Bandai, Kaiyodo, etc. can't even sell Macross toys, models, and figures directly to North America.
While I personally don't care about yu-gi-oh in the slightest, it sucks to see the actual producers get screwed. However, they should have known better as the problem with HG was common knowledge long before they signed a deal with 4-kids for yugioh.

Harmony Gold is still alive because of Robotech.
And yes, HG has that trademark on the Macross name here in America. However, because of the several lawsuits against Tatsunoko, Big West/Studio Nue decided not to pursue Macross in North America. The trademark can be fixed with a court case, but no one is trying at this point...
However, the problems between Big West/Studio Nue, Tatsunoko, and Harmony Gold are not the same as the ones between TV Tokyo/NAS and 4Kids.

I love the Yu-Gi-Oh Franchise (Well...okay, I only like 2 out of 4 series, or 3 out of 5 if you count season 0, but anyway~) but I love seeing 4kids getting just what they deserve.
Mostly because they don't have anyone to blame for this but themselves! -___- Whoever's in charge now should just go ahead and retire, maybe stay away from the anime industry in general.
-
05.20.2011 - 10:03 | OmnicromNot even close. Yugioh ZeXal has nothing to do with space.

Now get someone who knows what they're doing to make official subs/redub of YGO DM so people can see that while its indeed aimed at kids DM is one of the best damn anime ever.
A guy can dream.

Boy, this is just sad. I honestly would like to see another company have a shot at dubbing Yu-Gi-Oh. About a year ago I thought it would be fun to see Funimation try, but I've stopped hoping. If it happens, great, but I'm not gonna cry if it doesn't happen.
In all honesty, I loved (and in fact still love) 4kids' run on Yu-Gi-Oh/GX. I would like to see what this show is like dubbed. Altough, with summer coming up, I may just end up watching the japanese subs and seeing how they hold up. Is the japanese sub that much better?

I'm just curious cause I didn't see the original story, what did 4kids do to Yugioh that has TVtokyo and NAS all up in a hoot? anyone know?
-
05.20.2011 - 09:33 | JMShearerANE is really about the only place I've been following this whole 4Kids thing, so I'm decidedly limited in my knowledge of the issues involved. From what I do understand, though, there are three question involved with them giving up: Should they, will they, and can they.
Should they just give up? Well, yeah, from the sound if it, that's their best option.
Will they actually do it? Again, from what I know of the situation, probably not.
Why do I think that? Maybe they can't actually give up just yet for some reason that I'm not presently aware of.
Anyway, interesting video, MarzGurl. As always, I look forward to more.

05.20.2011 - 10:02 | OmnicromThe best part of this idiocy is that 4Kids has basically spent their entire dubbing career carefully extracting everything that could even conceivable get them sued by anyone for content. In essence appealing to reactionary nutjobs by doing the hack dubs Anime Fans hate them for.
Now they're being petty and doing shady things, in essence doing the opposite of the "Wholesome" dubs they've been putting out and in the process getting themselves sued. There's an irony in there about the people angling for family-friendly and being corrupt and nasty.
My condolences to every person who is harmed by the 4Kids screw-ups.

First off, It was TV Tokyo and NAS in the wrong for trying to sell the Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal rights to another company while the current contract with 4Kids is still being fought over in the courts.
And, you are basically saying that 4Kids is in a hopeless situation. That unless they cut their losses they will not have any new anime licenses. If they still got Yu-Gi-Oh and their programming block, they might get some new shows. If it's not anime, then other children shows from other countries. Reputation can be easily repaired with other companies with enough money...
I'm just saying do not start to nail the coffin just yet on 4Kids. They may yet recover with the Yu-Gi-Oh licence...

Ahem. *puts on reading spectacles, and begins reading off of a prepared sheet*
"I am sorry that many employees of 4kids, many of which were only doing their jobs and were not involved in any kind of scandal, will be without jobs at a particularly bad time in the economy. However, what has happened to 4kids can be blamed on nobody but 4kids. Their motivations for entering this industry and their ethics in doing so have always been called into question as being dubious, and they have crossed far too many lines with their own audience to endear any sort of sympathy towards their plight. As sad as this incident is, it should be remembered and taken as an example for other dubbing companies to learn from in the future."
*puts spectacles and paper away* Now that I've gotten that out of the way, I can do this without sounding insensitive.
Frankly, I wish that 4kids had lost the license to Yu-Gi-Oh! BEFORE they got their slimy claws on the transcendent immaculateness that is 5D's. They actually didn't do a horrible job from a broad standpoint with it such as in voice acting or keeping more serious undertones (renaming Aki "Akiza" and erasing the graveyard Pearson was buried in and other various and sundry blasphemies not withstanding), it still stands to fact that it and any other anime that 4kids has ever dubbed would have been better off if 4kids had never dubbed it. Good Lord, the fact that 4kids got to dub 5D's but lost the license just as it came time for them to dub that unholy abomination ZEXAL strikes me as grand cosmic cruel irony of the highest order, since 4kids and ZEXAL seem MADE for each other, and getting a more serious company to dub ZEXAL won't do much to ease the catastrophic failure it's going to experience when it comes to American shores. If there is one anime that I wish with all my heart and soul will get re-dubbed after they lose the license, it's 5D's.
P.S. for anybody who saw my rant on JesuOtaku's top 10 Cowboy Bebop episodes comment forum and have made this connection and might possibly be upset by it: And, yes, I *personally* like and *personally* have more respect for a show about 'card games on motorcycles' (God I hate that meme) a lot more than I like or respect Cowboy Bebop. If anybody is upset by this, DEAL WITH IT.
-
05.21.2011 - 16:54 | Mizu Takishima
Someone who actually has respect for a show about "card games on motorcycles", yet still loathes that meme with a passion?
*Sparkles and cries happily* At last, I've found a kindred yu-gi-oh-spirit!!
Also I'm not offended at the whole Cowboy Bebop thing. I didn't see your comment, but I'm not an uber-huge fan to have even seen JO's video about the show XD (Not that I dislike Cowboy Bebop...'cause I really do like it!...I just like Trigun more :D)

05.21.2011 - 22:46 | jz1337I doubt anyone cares what you think of either show, particularly since you haven't provided any reason for hating it. So they probably don't bother to DEAL WITH IT, because they don't care. Because its nothing new.
-
Believe me, I wish that were the case and that nobody DID care so I could let my voice be heard without ridicule. Unfortunately, it isn't. I've already taken some flak because according to certain reports, I apparently *don't* have the right to have an unpopular personal opinion. The line DEAL WITH IT kind of backfired in my face; I was hoping it would address an issue before it was ever brought up and attract LESS attention to me, not more.

05.28.2011 - 19:25 | Lëzen"Every real anime fan"? Are you serious? Am I the only one here who thinks it's sad that there exist anime fans with BS elitist mentalities on who's a "real" fan or not?
That's almost as asinine as the people who claim that anyone who likes Metallica's post-Black Album material "isn't a real Metallica fan". Get off your freakin' high horses, people.
Also, is it just me, or was there no credits on this one?
