I remember my YouTube friends told me about this.

I understand WHY they are doing this Loli-Con has gotten out of hand, however the BILL they wrote would make basic FANSERVICE ILLEGAL! It would make even Ranma 1/2 a Clean Anime with Nudity Banned!

We are also UNDER ATTACK on Free Speech here in America. The FCC Just officially started regulating the internet. You know BLUE POPO!

    http://www.foxnews.com/ politics/2010/12/21/fcc- poised-pass-network- neutrality-rules/

    http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=oTshrURtcjU

There is also a bill called COICA that would illegalize file sharing websites and also go after us PARODIERS. COICA would also make AMV's Illegal!

    http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=gpcwqu9RBHU

THANKS SO MUCH AGAIN MARZGURL FOR WAKING UP SO MANY ANIME FANS AND FOR BEING OUR ANIME NEWS LADY!

Not that I believe anything Fox News reports...

All 3 of your links 404ed. But I did find & sign the antiCOICA petition.

Internet censorship would just backfire in the government's face & increase crime. It's like trying to ban alcohol.
  • pariah
    avatar
You gotta remove the spaces in the links. Since they can be hard to find, you could just paste it in Google. It's much easier!
  • S-3  - At GokuFievel and LikaLaruku..
    avatar
That's why we gotta fight. Signing petitions IS NOT ENOUGH and never will be.

We literally got to get off our asses and fight- it's the only real way to getting the gov't back in WE, THE PEOPLE's hands.

And this is just one issue. One of many...

NET NEUTRALITY IS NOT AN ATTACK ON FREE SPEECH!

Honestly Net Neutrality if anything is a DEFENSE of free speech because it prevents providers from blocking certain sites and services or arbitrarily jacking up rates in order to get to certain content.

You are right though that free speech is under attack in America, mostly from giant corporations like Comcast and AT&T.
  • Amy!
    avatar
So you'd rather have the US government (which has made some incredibly iffy decisions under the FCC) deciding what's allowable out there rather than 'giant corporations' I.E. free enterprise, which can always have competition? Net Neutrality is not a defense of free speech whatsoever.

HOWEVER- that's not the subject of this video. I heavily support the idea of this second expo! And I'm not at all surprised it's cropped up. Creative people find a way around things, when this level of censorship is pulled on them out of the blue. Thanks for the good news about this, Marzgurl.
  • fishsicles  - *headdesk*
I just have to say, read up on net neutrality. It has nothing to do with what is "allowable" and "not allowable"; by definition, a truly neutral network is entirely uncensored, by government or corporation.

Net neutrality, as explained by Tim Berners-Lee (who just so happened to invent the modern WWW): "If I pay to connect to the Net with a certain quality of service, and you pay to connect with that or greater quality of service, then we can communicate at that level."

What net neutrality in this sense means is that a company cannot prioritize packets. This prevents ISPs from slowing down connections to specific websites in favor of connections to other sites.

Essentially, if two users have the same kind of Internet access from different providers, they should be functionally identical when using the Internet; for example, a Comcast user and a Qwest user with the same bandwidth should be able to do the same things.

The FCC also wants to go against deep packet inspection, which is a major invasion of privacy used by telecom companies today. (Albeit not to the extent of the bloody Patriot Act.)

This is literally all that it means; it is not a form of government control over the Internet, it is a form of reduced corporate control over the Internet. One of the stipulations of a neutral network is that governments do not have control of content either, so how exactly does this imply more government control over the Internet? Regulation and control are different things, and regulation of the controllers does not mean regulation of the controlled.

But COICA is a nasty little bastard, make no mistake.

Sorry to make you headdesk, sir. I didn't make myself clear, and I do apologize for that. After reading your links, I'm not entirely sure where I stand, but I'll certainly give the whole thing further thought.

We do both agree on COICA, however. It's absolutely terrible.

Thank you for the smart discussion, the links, and the correction.
  • Neoalextg  - Politics why must you follow me
    avatar
This is the problem when you get all your "news" from the same source.

Net neutrality begin as an issue only after the major internet providers started to wonder out loud how they could charge more for and force more control over the internet. This issue was ignored by the mainstream for several years till Comcast, AT&T, and such started to enact there ideas of pay by usage, traffic control, and other such disastrous ideas.

It’s not the fake government control you need to be worried about it’s the Corporation looking to screw you out of more money for less service. This regulation should of been stronger but because so many fell for the corprate line of government control the regulation is too weak and full of loopholes.
  • Dwane
Thank you! (and you fishsicles) Net neutrality is not a "takeover" as the talking heads would have us believe. The goal is to prevent service providers and related companies from limiting access to certain material. The big fear is that enormous corporations could limit or prevent access to information that is counter to the executives' and board of directors' politics. Kind of like a corporate version of what China does, or an internet of nothing but Fox News approved content. More likely, companies would simply limit access to competitors' websites and any information that might be embarrassing to the company. An example might be if Charter started making Comcast's website super slow or not load at all. People keep complaining that there wasn't a problem, so there was no need to fix it, but the "fix" that passed won't do any harm, so why oppose it?

COICA, on the other hand, is a dangerous bill. Basically, it would allow the attorney general to shut down websites where copyright violations and piracy are taking place, even if the site prohibits it and takes it down when requested (think Youtube). It didn't make it through the last session of Congress, so it may show up with a different name. The list of the old bill's sponsors included many Democrats and Republicans, so there is some risk of bipartisan support for this type of bill. Watch this one, folks.

stick it to this law and the governor!! though i doubt this law will EVER be taken seriously (yeah, good luck with the economic ramifications), this law is just the embodiment of old thinking. it clearly depicts otaku as lowbrow types who enjoy decrepit and immoral activities. the same thing was said about comic books in the 1950s but unfortunately the popularity of video games, manga, and anime has just shifted the focus to them now. i support these animation studios in their effort to undermine this ridiculous law. GO TEAM OTAKU!

Props to the Big 10 for sticking it to Ishihara & The bill. We need more balls against this stupid bill.

And here's something interesting based on recent interviews with Governor Ishihara's second in command:

"Q: Tezuka Osamu's Hi no Tori (Fire Bird) has incest. Are you going to regulate that?
Inose: No, because it's a masterpiece.

Publisher would gladly take in a masterpiece. Regulations from the bill is secondary.
So only worry about it after drawing a masterpiece. If it's good, then bill won't hold. "

According to him, it's okay to have A Serbian Film, Cannibal Holocaust & Salo to be sold in Tokyo video stores because they're "masterpieces".

But it's not okay for Yosuga no Sora & To Love Ru to be sold. At All.

    HOW DOES THAT WORK??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Shinigami
    avatar
Thats the thing. Logic like that dosen't work at all. Sad part is that Ishihara thinks that it does work and is convinced that he is right and everyone else are wong.

I heard it was 10 manga companies boycotting.

    http:// www.animenewsnetwork.com/ news/2010-12-10/10-manga- publishers-to-boycott- tokyo-anime-fair

The boycott may work, but they are going to need someone huge in the animation side to drive it home, like TOEI animation, Studio Pierrot, or Ban Dai Visual.

Seriously though, who in their right mind actually wanted this to happen? Besides of course the governor himself.

That man is an idiot, and his law will fail. Hard.

Also, if Free Speech fails in the US as GokuFievel fears, then what hope the rest of the world?

This is why you need the guns, because otherwise "they" march in and tell you what your morality is. If you disagree, they label you Pervert, or Heathen, or even Criminal!

Well here in dear old Blighty, here's one chap they bay gunna get their filthy 'onds on!

GokuFievel has been listening to too much Glenn Beck. The FCC just said that corporations can't limit access to legal content on the internet.

Kadokawa is better known for their manga, not anime. Almost all of my raw manga has Kadokawa on it.

Preteen & teen geeks here are especially violent & spiteful when it comes to nerd rage. There have been several cases this year of young boys attempting to shoot & stab their own parents for suppressing their video game access. Damn good thing for whatshisface that gun ownership is illegal in Japan & that he's not trying to pull this in America.

    Welp, time to mail Tokyopop....

    Let's see who's boycotting....
    *Kadokawa Shoten.
    *Sueisha.
    *Kodansha.
    *Hakusensha.

Wow, those four publish almost everything I read, & I have over 3,000 manga.

Isn't Japan's constitution similar to ours? Can't this be ruled unconstitutional in Japanese courts?

I am now seeing a visual similarity between Ishihara and George W. Bush. Take that as you will.

And if I were going to the Tokyo International Anime Fair, it would be to totally jeer the governor.
  • Chol Yerlow 2  - I'm confused about this bill.
    avatar
I got the idea that the bill is simply making it wrong to publish anime works with illegal things like sexual acts with minors and the like. If that is the case then why make such a big deal out of it? Isn't it anime like that ( kodomo no jikan for example) that gives anime such a bad rap?

Or am I missing something else stated in this bill? I understand the whole "taking away rights to expression" and all that is an issue here, but I thought the only thing it was taking away was the right to things that a great majority of us find offensive anyway like incest and lewd acts with minors. But I am pretty ignorant to this bill so if I'm just way of base here, then my apologies.
  • Zenneth
Actually, you do missed lot of things.
The new law put a ban on
[Contents that is consider harmful to the development of youth]
Depending on how far they will go with it, more than half of the products in the market can and will get ban.

    Check these out.
    http:// www.sankakucomplex.com/ 2011/01/07/tokyo-manga- massacre-begins/

  • Chol Yerlow 2

I couldn't get the second link to work. The first one didn't make sense to me. Am I correct that the manga with "contents harmful for youth" was moved to the adult only section? It doesn't seem like a ban if that is the case, more like a stupid new form a labeling.

But exactly how far is the bill going exactly? Are the banning old and new anime/manga all together (as in buring them and denying the right to publish them)? If that is so then I can see the HUGE problem there.
  • Zenneth
sankaku complex (the 1st link) have plenty of articles regarding this.
    search "tokyo" "manga" "loli" "ban",
    and you should find them

It seems the comment auto-generated spaces in the 2nd link, deleted them before typing them in.

Like you said, stuffs with Sexual acts with minors do get ban.
    BL(gay homosexual) stuffs too.
Depending on character's age, incest isn't part of it though.
However, anything with a slightest bit of nudity, panties, sexual themes(even without actual sex or nudity), etc. AT LEAST ALL GET MOVE TO 18+.
Also, there's nothing specified on how far "exactly" will this law cover.
As such, comic violence (One Piece, Naruto, Bleach) could be cover as well.

And yes, both old and new stuffs get cover.

Thus far, drawing school uniform is already part of the ban.
But real life naked Adult movie with school uniform is still allowed.
  • YingYing
Why'd you remove the intro? :(
  • michaelarroyo01  - Escalation
    avatar
The situation with this law is escalating. One of my biggest concerns is if manga creators do something reckless and try to directly challenge this law by publishing work which blatantly violates it. I'd rather see this law fizzle out due to it's obvious ridiculousness than see it erupt into and ugly debate, wasting time and money, when there are a lot more pressing crisis that the Japanese government should be addressing, such as the poor economy, which is only going to get worse with these new restrictions of manga!

PS: I know this is off topic, but I just went to see the animated movie, Summer Wars, at the IFC Center in New York City. It was amazing, and I urge everyone to go check it out if you live somewhere that is playing it.

Marzgurl, if you read this, I was wondering if you could mention this movie's US release in one of your future videos, and how it is in contention to be nominated for an Academy Award this year. I'm not sure if you've already mentioned it before, but I really want to give this movie my support, and hopefully see it get an Oscar nod.

  • Kraktzor  - backwards...
    avatar
The law itself seems rather backwards. Granted I haven't seen the whole lettering of the law itself so I'm not sure, but from what Marzgurl has said before and what I looked up on my own (and to comment on something Chol Yerlow 2 said) it would move things around. But then ALL anime would either be labelled for little children, or in the section for adults, there wouldn't be anything in between, and going to the extremes like that is not good.
  • Kaibaman

I've said this before I'll say it again, you gotta feel bad for the companies. In The Corporate world their forced to be assholes to due to Copyright and Patent Laws yet now when they do what the Government wants they do this to them, practically making this business illegal so now companies gotta go Rogue just to make a living.

Due to right now a new Sailor Moon DS Game only in Italy right now I temporally forgot about this my mind at ease of this shit.

Okay, I know I'm not a lawyer, I barely passed a criminal justice course in college. But I fail to see how this law is supposed to protect people. It doesn't even target real images, just drawn ones. I do not understand the logic.
The only good thing about the law is that it cements that marriage must take place between a man and a woman of different families (because before, we've had people wanting to marry DS characters, body pillows, and yes anime characters). So other than the law that bans incest and homosexual marriages, what's the point of this law?

I like soul eater, and i didn't mind Naruto before all the bullshit. watching a weekly cartoon via internet download, with subtitled. that was sweet, but over.
