11.11.2010 - 02:39 | kyuvenThere's actually an anime called Southern Cross as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/ Super_Dimension_Cavalry_S outhern_Cross
It's one of the three shows that got combined into Robotech, and most likely draws a bit of influence (I know Macross does, which is another part of Robotech) from Yamato as well.

11.11.2010 - 05:56 | houiostesmoirasI suppose this is the anime version of deaths coming in threes.
I think the reason for all these deaths among anime's greats recently is that truly good anime is starting to get a bit old. The great series of yesteryear were first animated in the late seventies and early eighties, and the people who worked on them are starting to edge into the age brackets where death isn't uncommon. (Yes, I know that Pokémon is from the nineties and Satoshi Kon wasn't that old, and Yoshinobu didn't die of natural causes... okay so my point isn't really related to these three deaths at all. Nevertheless, I do expect to start having to mourn a lot more of animation's greats in the near future.)

Oh gosh, this is heart-breaking.
I mean, it's bad enough that I almost cried when I found out Takeshi Shudo died. He's the guy who wrote the first 3 Pokemon movies, (the best out of all the one's that have been produced thus far, IMO) and wrote episodes for Kanto League, Orange Islands, and even Johtoh. (I'm not sure if he wrote all of Johtoh though- places just list "Johtoh" but I distinctly remember the quality dimming either in the middle of that league or towards the end) Which, to me, were the best 3 seasons of the entire series; there was a certain quality to them that I just can't explain.
Pokemon was my entire childhood, and for the longest time a huge chunk of my life. It's one of those series/franchises that stick with you like a first love. (Not that Pokemon was my first anime, but it was the series which taught me the meaning of the word "obsessed")
Oh my I'm sorry, I've gotten really off-track just now;;;;
I'm afraid I've never actually seen Space Ship Yamato- but I've definitely heard of it. Just like the other greats who have recently passed, he will be sorely missed. (Though, if my death was that ironic with such anime-associated-twists to it, I know I'd die happy)

11.11.2010 - 13:10 | JinDoganYou didn't talk about the legal rights of Yamato?
Matsumoto is definitely the creator. It's like if one guy says hey wouldn't it be cool if...? And another guy actually makes the project. Who's the creator?

While it's sad to lose a prominent figure in what was to contribute and shape the anime we know and love today, most kids will say two things...
1. Wait, who?
2. Yamato...is that on cartoon network?
That's truly the sad thing is that most people who love the medium either won't care or know who this is, much less give his franchises the time of day. -THAT...is the true travesty here...

On behalf of the countless fans worldwide, for all the anime shows you all have created, written, and worked on; building large fanbases and communities; for taking part in developing memorable stories, characters, and entire worlds of imagination to be enjoyed by fans young and old...
Domo Arigato
RIP everyone, you all deserve it.

11.11.2010 - 16:48 | NOTYETUSEDNAMEHi Marzgurl. My deepest sympathies. I grew up watching Star Blazers(the American Dub of Space Battleship Yamato) and I loved it immensely. Having grown up and now compared it to original Yamato, I really appreciate the incredible talent he had and inspired in others. He was a pioneer in a wonderful medium and he will be missed. Thank you for the tribute to this legend, my friend. Peace.
P.S. I'm REALLY looking forward to live action YAMATO, too-I really hope it gets an American release as I'm betting it's going to be Awesome on the big screen.

It is sad that very good movie creators just die this year. :-(
This said, I didn't look forward to the live action Film of Yamato hopefully, it will surprise me.
Oh and the video doesn't work for me on the page, so I had to watch it directly from blip and for some reason it repeats halfway through.

This is one of those times were you wonder, Why is their Death in Life? Or better yet, why are our bodies so fragile and lifespan short compared to The Gods or possible alien life? Hell their is also the possibility to Immortality but again it brings the question...why are we even here to begin with?
I do wish these talented souls in the afterlife enjoy peace well deserved.

I didn't know he died. He was a good director. I just don't bother following anime news but I never expected any of these guys would die soon or that I wouldn't hear about it for *months! Figured a big person like satoshi would have cropped up around the internet enough that I'd hear about it sooner.
Also? The video is doubled. You should probably fix that.
