09.22.2010 - 21:09 | cobrabrandy22I dont think I'll ever get a digital device to read Manga I just like having the physical copy in my hands too much also it just feels "wrong" to read a book online sure it's convenient but the great thing about owning a book is it's youre's you own that copy and it'snobody else's not just some download on a computer or Iphone

09.22.2010 - 21:18 | EbalanceYeah... they should have pdf downloads available. That would be the best thing, I think. Then if you still want to print it out you can do that too. I think we should continue to have multiple options: books, computer download, and other?
I LOVE BOOKS... but manga are really expensive, and that many books takes up A LOT of space...

I'm one of those old fashioned folk who never really liked reading things online. For one, it kinda hurts the eyes to stare at a screen and read something for an extended period of time (even reading a manga would be the same if you were trying to marathon chapters, I imagine) and it just feels... 'better' to me to have something physical in my hands.
I've tried Amazon's Kindle services... but I still prefer going into a bookstore and supporting the workers there by buying a physical copy of whatever I'm interested in, regardless of the cost... that's why I go into used book shops X3.

sounds like a good deal. Though I don't have an iphone. An iphone seems a bit small for reading comics of any kind, a pc or and ipad would be much better for that, and since I don't have an ipad (and no plans to get one...ever) I'll be one of the ones waiting for pc digital manga. Or you know just buy the paper versions. Like reading hose vs on a pc any day.
Oh and something else comes to my mind, Manga would prob be great on the kindle. it would still be a bit small (well the XL Kindle would be good size but I don't have that one) but since most manga is B&W it would transfer nicely.

I agree with the whole thing about PCs, my dad thinks that the iPad is the way the future, then again he has been wrong, remember that cell phone that came out last year... the one with the projector. He was wrong about that... then again the iPad is popular.
But still I don't think the iPhone is a good way to read manga... stories, maybe. But not manga.

...Mangafox, Mangareader...you know what? Just type "Manga" and "read" in Google and you'll get at least a dozen relevant sites. Yes, I know, you don't like these sorts of sites, for reasons I cannot for the life of me understand. If you enjoy a certain manga, you can buy it at your local store if/when it comes out in America.

Interesting idea they have, but I see some of problems at least.
First and more importantly, it is an unfair system. Not all mangas are produced at the same rate. As almost everybody knows, there are weekly and monthly series. The monthly series, due to the longer time between chapters, usually make each chapter at least five pages longer. So a volume of a monthly series is usually two to three chapters shorter. So, with that pricing system, although both works may be of the same length and quality, the monthly series will earn less. And publishers aren't dumb, so if this ends up being the standard system, they will go rather for weekly and shorter chapters, and ignore the monthly series, despite the possible quality, making the public miss some great sereis (like FMA).
Also, the rate of publishing. This may be a very personal concern, but I only read digital to be updated quickly. That is why I use site like Onemanga (although I later buy the physical copies of the series I like enough, or at least the over 200 volumes in my bedroom seem to think so). If the rate of publishing is the same, i will prefer a physical copy of the work, as I feel it more "valuable" and ususally not subject to DRM-type of restrictions (I can always resell it to return some of my investment).
Without counting the outrageous "entry fee", and that only for the publisher to sell it to me at the same or similar price (which is better for them).

09.23.2010 - 02:07 | DratatooI think it is great that puplisher are using a digital platform. Especially for "never ending series" like One piece etc this would be great. I personally don't have the the space to store hundreds of mangas in my appartment and getting them digitally would make them pretty easy to handle. The puplisher decided against the PC and for a closed up platform for following reason: Releasing it on the PC would mean that these mangas would be all over the net very fast (either by cracking the application, or simply by using the screenshot function). Pictures are really easy to distribute.
[Rant allert]
"Endless series"
Personally I think these ruin the anime/manga industry because people new to anime/manga get intimidated by the sheer volume and most likley won't pick these up. These "endless series" seem to me like they are most likley there to wring the last dollar /yen out of the fanbase. In the process the series looses ingenuity and appeal. Bleach for example turned from an interessting concept (soul society, invading "heaven", deal with otherworld responsibility while maintaining a normal live to "Aaaargh powerlevel 90000, aaargh!" like any other shonen series.

Oh man, how I hate this intro.
As for the content: if you want to read manga on a PC, there's an answer right in front of you. But since some people think that the law says what's right and wrong and is free of the influence of corrupted people, lobbyists and crooks, go buy a fscking iPad. While you're at it, throw some money to charity, maybe THAT will actually help someone in need.
The prices of these digital releases are ridiculous. Paper releases require massive machinery to print, professional editing, shipping... while a digital manga requires only the exponentially cheapening storage space.
This is a huge ripoff.

Even if I think that its good that Ishinomori gets so attention I hate idea that to read those you need to buy iPhone or iPad or something like that. Also there is fact that this is only in North America so people that don't live in USA or Canada and has one of those needed devices can't read those.

1$ per chapter is pretty much robbery O_o
Some mangas have 5-10 chapters, that's almost the price of the full thing, except physical thing is your to keep even if your digital devices break, it's yours to read even if you go on a trip-- yours to keep for years.
Plus, physical books cost to publish, digital media barely and a copy can be made into thousands with barely any cost adding up (apart from bandwidth) charging almost the same price as an actual manga is -- what I would call, legal robbery.
Digital media is the worst thing that has happened to manga. D: Be it on the pc or any other digital media. It's all the same.
And to be honest, I know this side is hated by most, but between paying for manga in digital format or downloading from scanlations, I will go with scanlations, thank you. At least most of them are better edited, and some, better translated. Ultimately, I prefer the book and I won't care for language.
PS: Note, the translation thing varies from the country and company that releases the manga. Sayuki for example, both the english scanlation and the later released spanish translation by "Manga Line ediciones" had the same translation pretty much, the American one however was greatly changed to sound more "cool"
-
09.23.2010 - 05:52 | Steven TThere's already manga you can view on your PC. They're called scanlations.
The problem is you love having scanlation sites shut down and expect everyone to learn Japanese and pay ludicrous shipping prices just so they can read manga that won't be released in English officially.
