I'm still in shock. His only work that I saw was Millenium Actress and it's one of the most beautiful movies I've ever witnessed. Actually, one of my friends (a bigger Kon fan than I) mentioned that he thought of the end of the film with Kon instead blasting off into the unknown and I started tearing up.
Such a genius will be sorely missed.

A creative genius was removed from this world in a fashion that feels too sudden and was certainly way too soon. It's natural to feel angry because it's clear that Kon had so much left to offer the world that will now never been seen...or at least that's how I see it.
I only saw Paranoia Agent but man, that show was intense and frankly could only have come from a genius.
RIP Satoshi Kon

This is just heart breaking...Kon was so amazing! His movies were all so awesome and full of life, I can't believe he is dead! I found out on deviant art when the popular artist Space Cyote uploaded a picture of Kon in the spaceship from the end of Millenium Actress. I guess it was a beautiful way to learn the truth, but it still hurts. I cried a bit, not gonna lie.
Also, it's a bit of a rude awakening to the reality of the mortality of amazing people. I thought I was sad last year when Billy Mays Died...Also, this is kind of terrible, but this made me realize that Hayo Miyazaki will be dead someday too. That's just...unreal. I grew up with his movies, I just can't accept the fact that someday...
Anyway, This is truly a sad day for anime fans. I feel like watching all of Kon's movies over again, but I know that would make me cry terribly.

I'll be honest, I never heard of him before, but I have noticed some of his works that have gained popularity like Paprika and Paranoia Agent. After watching this video, all I have to say is that I feel guilty for having overlooked his works. Obviously he was a man of great artistic talent and powerful influence, and I failed to see that. That's it, I am going to watch one of his anime, and I know I will be impressed. And I hope that will honor this deceased man.

I saw the title on the sidebar and thought this was news about his recent work, then I read the expanded title after I clicked the link and felt a crushing dread wash over me that you would be reporting something I might not be so happy about, and sadly, it happened. Never before have I felt a sense of mourning over some one I had never seen.
Satoshi Kon's works were inspiring pieces of art and the anime world takes a heavy loss today. He has enormous shoes to fill and no one has yet approached him in anime film-making prowess that I've seen in my years as an avid anime fan.
Satoshi Kon will be missed by all, and may he rest in peace.

Its not often I actually log on so I can comment on stuff, but I felt this was worth it.
Personally I had no Idea who this guy was till you started saying what works he was responsible for, At that point I too started to feel a bit stricken with sadness. I might not have known the man, but I am well acquainted with the movies and series. Paprika is one of my top 10 anime movies even for it shear insanity.
I am truly sad to hear that he has passed, but I can tell that you are indeed far more upset than me and probably many others fans. I am sorry that this is effecting you so much and I hope that you will feel better in time.

I only ever watched Tokyo Godfathers and I've got to say is one monster of a movie, i wanted to get things done that day but the movie jsut didn't let me, I was so absorbed by the characters and the story, at first I didn't know who he was, but when I heard he created tokyo godfathers I felt really sad and for what I've heard around, perfect blue is jsut as if not better than tokyo godfathers, even if I don't have a legal way to watch the movie, I swear I'll buy the dvd on ebay, even though it one expensive sucker with the shipping included. It would be a disrespect to watch the movie bootlegged IMO.

Man, at such a young age of 47, one of the great minds of anime dies... I've seen Perfect Blue, Paprika, and Tokyo Godfathers, as well as Paranoia Agent. Each offered a special and unique experience unlike any other anime. Maybe I'll go watch some of those in remembrance. It's just very sad that someone with so much talent dies way before his time.
RIP Satoshi Kon.

Excellent tribute Marzgurl. I really think there can be no greater compliment to a director (or any kind of producer) than the one you just gave Satoshi Kon.
As for myself, while I still think that the god of the animated picture is Hayao Miyazaki, Kon was never far away from that title. He truly was a master of the animated framework, in much the way that Akira Kurosawa was the master of the visual framework. He was also able to take the medium of animation to a place (at the highest level of cinema) that Miyazaki was either unable or unwilling to take it, to the mature audience.
I suppose the greatest compliment I could level is what I thought when I came out of the theater after seeing Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island." Basically that was, "This was ok, but I've seen it done so much better. I probably would have really liked it if I hadn;t already seen "Perfect Blue." They may not have had the same premise, but when it came to blurring the lines between reality and fantasy, I have seen none that have done it so well as Satoshi Kon could do it.
He and his work will be greatly missed.

I truly loved Paranoia Agent and I always wanted to see Paprika...(Never wanted to see Perfect Blue, but now I'm curious about Millennium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers) and to think that someone who created true cinema through this precious medium is now no longer with us...it truly is heart-breaking, it really is..
R.I.P Satoshi Kon, you will be sorely missed.

Ugh... this hits me like a kick in the stomach.
I'm in shock.
Millennium Actress will forever rank as one of my favorite movies of all time. It's a masterpiece, as are most of his movies -- even the ones I don't "love" have such a clear, spectacular vision that I can't help but respect them as works of art. And I was looking forward to many more to come.
What a loss.
But what a legacy.
Thanks for the tribute.

When I first sat down and watched "Paprika", I was absolutely enthralled and captivated by what I saw. Soon afterwards, I had to check out "Perfect Blue". It left me in such a state of awe and paranoia (let's just say I immediately turned on all the lights in my house and eagerly looked around to see if there was anyone else around), almost like an experience in itself.
Wonderful tribute to a very inspiring director.
RIP Satoshi Kon.
Satoshi Kon will be missed, and a huge void is now there in the anime world that will take probably years to fill.
