YAY more MarzGurl on her Soapbox.

I still quote Penn and Teller "BULLSHIT!"
• regulus4
Yeah, MarzGurl got me to start buying up paperbacks of FMA after already reading scanlations. Only way I could really make it right.
• mr_rubino
If you don't want to hear it, you entitled brat, quit asking. Her answer isn't any different than it was the last 7 times.
• fuujin
I'm pretty sure everyone who reads scans knows it's illegal, just like anyone watchin fansubs knows that's illegal too. One Manga goin down kinda sucks, but scanlators aren't gonna stop anytime soon so it's still easy to get what you're lookin for.
• PLA
It's only illegal if the copyright holders want it to be. Which they do, and more of them recently.
• Feralucce  - WRONG
Unless they specifically include a statement in the work that says they want it distributed, it has been and always will be illegal.

The person who owns the copyright dictates how the work can be distributed.

• BruceMcF
Its normally illegal unless they give explicit permission.

Like MarzGurl says, there are (and have always been) exceptions, and copying the entire content of an entertainment for purposes of entertainment fails to qualify in multiple ways. Fair Use exceptions are for things why a reviewer can display a couple pages from a 200pp. manga, and why a class in manga can show examples of the work of various artists.

Paying too much money for a book that would normally cost 5 dollars =(
• Feralucce  - wah
As opposed to stealing the book?
• BruceMcF
You never hear of Amazon, silly? Copyright allows reselling a legit copy. Buy used copies and help finance the next purchase of someone willing to pay a whole $7 for a 200pp publication.

I laugh at the cry baby pirates who whine about not being able to steal no more.
• Kuoh
Yes because scanlations are really hard to find...

Piracy will never stop, mostly because all the manga industry sucks here.
• Just a Gigolo
Whhhhhhaaaaa CRY SOME MORE!!!
• PLA
So saying that it can't be stopped because it is too easy to do is exactly the same thing as crying because it has been successfully stopped?

For the record, they probably can still continue. It isn't magic. Anyone can upload image files. It can certainly be slowed down, and maybe even stopped, but I doubt that it's already over.

• PLA
Uh-oh, you found out about the conspiracy. You're right, Big Pharma has been sending its goons out to fight you, ultimately aiming to trick you into believing that you live in a world where dissent is possible.

This will in mysterious ways prevent you from being a threat to their plans of world domination.

Heavy is awesome.
• Shithead  - Hah.
Your insults only serve to weaken your arguement, Gigolo. "Poopy diaper baby!"
• BruceMcF
OneManga was getting over one billion hits.

Sure once the top thirty have been taken down, there will still be bootleg copies available in the dank, shady corners of the internet, but the whole "easiest to find, easiest to use" piracy will go away.
• Macedo  - Sigh...
avatar
I agree with you with must of what you say (if not all) what OneManga was doing was doing WAS illegal and frankly I'm surprised they lasted that long but I still have to admit I used it very often.

It's sad that manga companies are going bankrupt because of the piracy I helped perpetuate but I know for a fact that a lot of people like used sites like OneManga out of need and not of wanting to save a buck.

For example, I live in a country where it is really hard if not impossible to get manga the old fashioned way. Third world countries have bigger priorities than distributing manga and anime and I understand that but what that leaves me is the only option to go to the interenet and use sites like OneManga. I have the money to buy them but since there's no store that sells them I'm sort of screwed.

Again, I totally agree with what you said it IS unfair for the manga artists to not get payed for their work but for people like me whose only choice to get manga was through OneManga it basically means we'll have to wait till we grow up get a credit card and buy them online. It sucks but I guess I'll have to put up with it.
• GTO Neko  - Whoah.
avatar
Sucks that the site's gonna go down, but oh well. I'd wish it to still be up some mainly with some series that still aren't fully available in the U.S. just yet, but if it comes down to it where they have to go down, then so be it.

As long as the publishers are really doing their part to bring out alot more series, be it as physical or as digital, I'd like to support them whenever I can.
• DM
meh, so my options are wait forever for manga to be published in the US, order it in Japan and wait for three weeks for it to be mailed to me, or look online for the latest exciting chapter in my manga the day after it's released. Hmmmm
• mr_rubino
Yeah. Deferred satisfaction, like your older siblings had to go through in the Dark Ages of the 1990s, when if you wanted something, you would have to have it... *gasp* MAILED to your HOUSE!
It could take a week! Maybe 7-10 business days! Inconceivable!

I'm glad someone else can ecknolage the wrongness of one manga, I personaly cant stand reading comics of any kind on a computer. I've only ever read somthing on onemanga when I recently finished full metal alchemist volume 23 and it ended on quite a cliff hanger, so I finished the seires on onemanga but I still inted to by it when released. I've always felt you owe the creators there due.

I agree wholeheartedly, but I'll still miss the site.
• vick86
Scanlations have always been illegal but they've never really been a big issue the way fansubs have been. The problem lies not with the scanlators themselves but with these aggregators who put up hundreds of manga that are easy to read online. Taking these sites down is a good thing. Due to their all encompassing nature, easy word of mouth and high positions on google it made it too easy for an average joe to read tons of manga without paying for it. ?Using OneManga and it's ilk took no effort whatsoever. By getting rid of the aggregators the amount of leechers will drop significantly as most of the poeple using these sites are too lazy or not interested enough to actually find out the individual scanlators who thanks to these sites didn't get the credit they "deserved". I think it's highly unlikely they'll ever go after individual scanlators. There's just too many of them. So for those willing to search for it there'll always be scanlations. They're just getting rid of some bad blood.
• Anti-Otaku
Good episode, and hopefully this entire matter is FINALLY put to rest.
• whatever42
avatar
In all honesty, I get the feeling that it will be very hard, if not impossible, to totally put this to rest. Many in a good amount of countries cannot get many manga any other way and others who can get it will still use illegal means because they don't care or it's easier. I'm not saying that using sites like OneManga is right in any capacity, as it isn't, but I can see why some feel like they need it and use it.

Anyway, a nice episode Marzgurl. I knew you would have one on this even if you didn't want to because I knew many would probably not leave you alone about it. Way to stick it to those who use this illegal stuff. =)

Despite all that though, I can't say I won't miss the option existing. I used it a bit more than I should have like many others. =(

No offense to anyone, but why is it that whenever MarzGurl (or anyone on this site, really) does a video where they express their opinion they get bad ratings? It says in the video that people ASKED for her opinion. So now that it isn't what they wanted to hear it sucks? Heaven forbid people have different opinions on the internet... :whisper: :snicker:

Whenever I hear that word "Copyright", I think of the Scientomologists and their utter, utter misuse of something put in place to help creators retain the rights to their creations.

But I know how I'd feel if the internet was ripping me off. I'd hunt down every last thief and... on second thought, I won't describe in detail what I'd do, there might be impressionable kids reading. Suffice it to say it would be very, VERY unpleasant...

Anyways, I know which Manga series I'd like to read (Takaya-san, Find yourself a nice translator and make with the Definitive English-Language Guyver release plz), and look forward to more... um... stuff! =)

I always find it a weird situation with fan translations and official works on the internet.

While I understand the details of copyright violation and all I tend to operate with a certain degree of rules.

I think my major problem with the scanlation and fandub sites is not so much the weekly release but the backcatalogs. I feel that a backcatalog is something that ought to be sold and that nobody has the right to not pay for a perminate copy of the product ever and that it is preferable to get the product in a way that brings funding to the creator.

I will however read scanlations when I find the service I am looking for is not being supplied by the rights holders. Here I bring into question if the product is being translated properly and distributed in a timely manner.

I don't actually look at many scanlations but if I were to compare this to my anime consumption I'd point to the fact that I now watch and purchase most of my content from Funimation the second they started to do direct from Japan premieres a week following airing for free and pay for day after releases along with their MUCH improved translations.
• themrginger  - Sorry for using One Manga but I have to for now...

I am a person who constantly uses One manga and I am very sad to see it go. The thing with me is that I am a student who is just entering college who is completly unable to find work right now. I can't afford to buy much manga right now at about 8 or 9 dollars each but I really love to be kept updated on things happening in certain series. I do try and keep things fair for the manga I read on One manga I do go out and buy that book later. I'm sorry if I'm one of those guys that pisses you off I don't mean to be but I just love manga so much that I don't want to give it up and be kept out of the loop only due to money troubles. Again though I do try to support as much as I can and buy the books not simply print them, sorry but that's all I really can do for now. =(

I think that "sink in"-line meant that he needed time to get used to fact that One Manga will be no more. After all dosen't people that used One Manga also feel that way? Of course they do. Well thats least how I see that.
• Him
To start off my comment, I am definitely not for the idea for posting manga online like One Manga did, and I don't think the publishers did anything wrong. BUT, that having been said, I think our main problem is that the publishers aren't taken the right course of action. I think taking down manga sites will have a huge backlash on the industry. The main problem being that One Manga is, for a lot of people, an introduction into certain series. Here in Australia, a single volume will usually go in some place like borders for $20 up. Not to mention a huge portion of readers are teenagers or children who have little access to money. It'll leave only dedicated fans left in certain areas around the world and kill the casual ones. I'd love to see a collaboration between publishing sites and One Manga but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

What I don't understand is why they are taking everything down, regardless of ownership. I can understand taking down the ones that were illegal, but why take down ones that the artists themselves put up. I know that if I had any talent and could finish any project I started, I would love to post my unpublished work on every website possible. Then again I care more about being noticed than getting rich.
• Commissar Jake  - Yes you are right.... But,
I was gonna say somethings myself on this topic about language barriers (Not everyone wants to learn japanese or can afford to learn) and the like but I just want to say this.

If a scanlations groups quality of translation is good and it's quality of image is good enough, Why not try and use them to get your manga out sooner... But I guess it can't happen.

I just feel sorry for the people who translate the manga they love which won't get a offical translate & publication because it's not a good buisness choice. (and theres always the fact that it's hard sometimes to even find the offical release when it's out because no one will stock it.) Ah well, I feel bad for the guys who translated Dragon Half, they did a good job... Thanks for all your illegal work to allow us to read a manga which has never been released outside japan even after 16 years after it had finished it's run.

One last thing: I wonder if the idea of a site (run by manga publishers) where you pay a monthly membership fee to be able to read translated chapters of manga (With security of course to stop you from copying the manga) with ad's for revanue and the like. Because if there ever is I'd more than happilly shell out as much as it costs monthly to read translated manga I want to read (I don't read Naruto/Bleach/one piece and there the series which sadly have the priority it seems)or atleast do something like Drivethru comics where you can buy digital copies of comics but your name and order code is watermarked onto the file to stop you from pirating (Cause they know who did it.).
• Katsuro-san

I was hoping you'd mention this topic. I've been at the computer 24/7 trying to read all the Bakuman I can read before they shut the site down.

Oh, and ugly? Grating voice? Your voice is perfectly fine, and your looks are gorgeous in my opinion. (And I'm not just saying that because of the blue hair.) Plus, it's really nice that someone actually dares to suggest that just maybe, the best thing for manga in the west isn't to bankrupt the manga publishers by giving their stuff away for free. (Though when it comes to Tokyopop scanlations are justified, in my opinion. They can't make blind idiot translations where they rewrite almost everything people say and then get mad at people for doing a good job for free when Tokyopop won't do a good job even though they get paid for it.)
• JackofAntics
avatar
Okay, so I was disappointed in OM being shut down. And yes, it was bound to happen sooner or later. What's a shame is that several titles that I do read from such sites aren't going to be licensed in the states for one reason for another.

For example, if anyone has ever read "Saint Nii-san/Big Brother", can you EVER imagine seeing this in the states? Just the premise of the manga would cause any publisher to reject it despite how awesome it is because people will get butthurt about it. For those of you who don't know, this manga's main story is about Jesus and Buddha trying to survive living in a Tokyo apartment together. No, this is not a BL manga. It's a rather comedic manga. Also it doesn't help that getting the licenses for manga is still not a fast or easy process.

Secondly, I've read translated 2ch. users comment on this issue. Majority of them were negative (and some even had 'foreigners go DIAF' tone). But for some of us, it's hard to obtain hard copies of our titles. So unless they bring in more manga via Kinokuniya stores or translating them, pirating will still exist.
• wallymunster  - Try before you buy

(i havent read many of the comments, sorry if its this topic has already been glossed over)

I think that the publisher of the different manga series should put up the first couple of chapters of a series onto their official sites (i believe some have) to give people an impression of a series before you buy since its an expensive hobby buying manga, so i think its a fair thing to do, to date i have collected all english publications of HunterXHunter, Monster, O-Parts Hunter, ect. and have started to buy into other series but i couldnt buy volumes of every series i like the look of and scanlations was a great way to try a series before you buy, i also liked scanlations introducing series that havent (and some WONT) been released in english.

Any way, theres my thoughts ^^
• cascoll
=O if it where not for scanlation I would have never ever ready any Manga ever. Nor would I have ever spent money to see if it was good. As an artist I support the actions taken by the publishers. You seem to be the only person crying. Though, blaming pirates is shifting the blame. Who's responsible for the manga industry going bankrupt? Well...them. They made bad business decisions, apparently unaware that's a niche market and ignore what their customers want (digital distribution).

Still I have no sympathy for One Manga. If they where smart they would have done what Crunchy Roll did (they prove crime does pay).

"English-speaking world" my ASS!! Has this girl ever been to a bookshop in any Anglophone country outside of the United States?? Just because it's "licensed" in the "English-speaking world" (typical American arrogance this time at least doesn't equate America with "the World" -- just the "English-speaking" one), doesn't mean we have general access to it in the Republic of Ireland. We don't HAVE Barnes & Noble, and there is a total of ONE Borders location in the whole country -- for all 4,000,000 of us -- and it is NOT piled to the brim with legit translated manga.

And no, I'm not saying scanlations aren't illegal. Nor am I even saying that I myself read or even like manga. There are SOME Japanese history manga that I might read if I can pick them up in their original Japanese (I imagine no one, not even fans, will ever translate them into English anyway) in a Book Off here in Japan. In general I have no issue with what goes on in the manga-publishing field, at least until they give me a paying job as a translator. I take issue only with the arrogant attitude of this girl.

For one, I'm an American, so yes, this ENTIRE video series has been focused toward Americans. I've stated that more than a few times in the past.
• Jazios
I am English and everything you are saying is fair but it takes even longer for things to be released over here than it does over in America. As a result we rely on scanlations not to mention fansubs to keep up with series we enjoy, if weren't for them It would take about 4 -5 years to watch a whole series of certain on-going Anime shows such as Bleach which is on about episode 60 - 70 on English TV with terrible dubbing and then we we still have fillers to go through on top of that. The point being people are moaning not because the laws are unjust and if they are then they are idiots, but because without Piracy we wouldn't be able to enjoy half of the material that's out there, just go into an English DvD store today and look at the Anime section and there is nothing there compared to the vastness of the internet.
• elvenscout742
Sorry for my rudeness before. I'm currently on an exchange program in a certain Japanese university, where for some reason the Americans in the program TEND to be arrogant dicks who think that because their countrymen framed Japan's constitution it means they own the place. Tend. Not even all of them here. And of course I don't think all Americans are like this. I just get angry sometimes when a few Americans think it's okay to make statements like "I want you to die" and usually try not to lash out on the internet. I was in a bad mood when I watched this video.

I have no problem with your making videos aimed at an American audience. I've been sat in a classroom and FORCED to watch things of less concern/interest to me. My beef was mainly with the use of the phrase "English-speaking world" to refer to America.

"this girl" huh... nice. She has the right to her opinion just like you do, that doesn't make her arrogant. And manga are sold in shops other than your barnes and noble type stores. I find it hard to believe there aren't any independent comic book shops that sell manga.

I use mail-order. That doesn't work well on untranslated stuff, but it's something.

• Feralucce  - No offense, but you're an idiot
Amazon.com
Barnes and noble ... .com
you can order them from those sites and guess what... THEY COME RIGHT TO YOUR DOOR.

I have to agree with you in facepalming at the "recently changed" rules. This is akin to complaining to your local representative that the cops started actually enforcing the speed limits that are posted all over the place.

It does stink to not get access to the content as easily but anyone who thinks that Japanese companies are going to just sit by while their content gets stolen is a moron. The only way you could make a fair use argument might be if you were scanlating small parts of a manga for a review and even that is a very thin defense.
