06.23.2010 - 21:59 | Neo Ultra MikeHmmm maybe you should change your show name to "Anime/Manga News Ediotiral" since it covers information regarding manga and anime. Then again that probably dosen't sound too catchy but it would stop you from having to go "Okay this week I'm covering manga" every other time you do a manga story.
Still interesting read. It is hard to determine what will happen with Scanliators nowadays. Some are left alone, some are busted, and now we have them being contacted and working with one of the manga adaptors. I think it also depends on what they're scanlating as well as where they're putting they're work. Yeah in the internet anything can be accessed by pretty much anyone but some places can be accessed faster (due to being easier to find) then others so there would be more time to post things and gather a small reputation before being found out. Then again yeah is it really worth the risk, especially considering that I'm sure scanlators aren't exactly making much money if they are doing it technically illelgally.

Most of the scanlators have their own sites with their own income from ads and most of them build communities... so a little money can be found in the mix.
Then again it's pretty much illegal to do that kind of stuff even if they only want to rid us of the stupid translations the old english translations were and to be honest... most of these guys are really better than most distributing companies just because they make it as raw of a translation as possible
When the market starts to get translation companies that doesn't censor the raw material pops up i think scanlators will be obsolete...

06.23.2010 - 22:01 | Jackass MaskThese are indeed times of change. I'm just not sure yet if certain friends i may keep are out of the woods for their choice of hobby. I have never liked the fact that some people would be penalized for translating a manga that would never have gotten the attention it deserved without the illegal actions that lead it to become serialized for American consumers. Maybe there will be some sort of great amnesty for scanilators to come out into the open so they can receive recognition from the companies without fear of copyright infringement or something.

06.23.2010 - 22:38 | kyuvenMost scanlators will probably just keep releasing stuff until they get a court order, then stop.
This really isn't the first time a crackdown on scanlation has taken place, Kodansha and Dark Horse have been rather iron fisted about their properties for years, which is subject to a bit of agitation since there are a lot of untranslated Kodansha properties and Dark Horse is not only slow as molasses at getting stuff released (my own recent foray into acquiring Ah! My Goddess has turned up the disturbing fact that it's been about 3 years and they still don't have the first 20 volumes released in the cheaper right/left format. When a scanlation group can have a chapter out on the net within HOURS and Viz has had their recent "catch ups" of One Piece and Naruto consisting of upwards of five volumes every 6 weeks or so, AND the fact that they've had the originals for YEARS...releasing one unflipped volume every five months is absurd.)
To be honest, Viz is probably the only company on the right track as far as American releases go, but if other companies would follow in DMP's foot steps and embrace digital distribution and maybe even turn to the people who have been churning them out for FREE (which is a nice fantasy but few scanlators would be considered...employable. There's a tendency amongst them to swipe office supplies :P) for possible employment, or even "purchase" their completed translations. Problem is, of course, the laws surrounding ownership of translated scripts are...sticky...at best. That's also a different topic entirely, but I have a prediction:
In our little niche circle, the question of "ownership" of a translation of a work will become an issue.

I have to say that it is great news that manga publishers are now finally getting in touch with their fans and working with them instead of trying to fight them. The legal issues of scanlations has been escalating for quite a while, much like Napster was for music about 10 years ago.
We needed a solution, and finally the issue has gotten serious enough for publishers to seek one out. Within a few months of trial and error, we will hopefully have a safe and legal way to get our hands on manga that would not normally reach American shores. With such an option available, scanlators have a new opportunity to turn their hobby into something more, and I think that is a really good thing.
However, I also think that there is still a lot of kinks to work out with all of this. For example, should scanlators now receive compensation from these companies, if said companies are now going to use these scanlations for their websites? Blip.tv pays people in ad revenue, maybe these companies should too. It may offer an intensive to scanlate legitimately.
By the way, if you want to watch more shows about anime, chech out The Geek Fighters and Xtreme Network Online. I got on this topic on my anime blog a month ago! (yes i'm sorry i'm a whore http:// animereviewsandnews.blogs pot.com/ ) I need to cover this more since it seems to be a big hot potato, and my big thing is...it's mostly yoai...I'm a guy so I mean unless the plot is really good...it need more yuri is what I'm saying or an actual story

Fuhuhuhu  Vampire Hunter D is deffinately hotter in the manga.
Que the Happy Happy Joy Joy theme.
I hope Tokyopop & others follow suit. Then we can legally finish all of their cancelled series.
If all goes well, maybe Funimation will be inspired to try working with fansubbers. They're the most likely candidate, since they let us watch stuff for free on Youtube. I'm still really happy with their work on Slayers Revolution.
-
06.24.2010 - 10:00 | Nifar
Why would they? It's not like they loose any money off of fansubbers, since roughly 95% of all fansubs are awful, and they can easily add Jonny Young Bosh or Vic Mignogna's name to anything and make back any money they may loose from that 5%, 100-fold. Their biggest problem would be illegal fan translations, and since they have their streaming channel which offers up something like 70% of their currently licensed titles in both professionally translated and dubbed formats, there's not much reason for anyone who wants to see something Funimation has to not go to Funimation for it.

Except for the Hong Kong fansubs, fansubs have superior translation. Some fansubbers even tack on extra stuff. Best examples are the fansubs of Juubei-Chan & Zetsuai/Bronze.
Man the Hong Kong ones can be bed, especially when it comes to characters names. In Yu-Yu Hakusho, they kepts switching Hiei & Kurama's names.

06.25.2010 - 16:55 | Nifar
I'm not talking about translation, I'm talking about voice acting. I'm sure there are some decent ones out there, but the majority of ones I've run into were just god-awful. They either didn't know how to act, had the wrong voices for the characters, sounded like they were just reading lines off of a sheet of paper, or some combination of the three.

06.23.2010 - 23:23 | Gundam_WarriorAh the War on Piracy, much like the War of Drugs, War on Prostitution and War on Terror it's a waste of time, money and effort(let alone causing more damage then good). With every court order given 50 sites show their head for a forced "moral" rule on society that as Penn and Teller would says is Bullshit!
Even the likes of Lars "Napster Bad" Ulrich admitted thanks to Napster they grew more fans in the Middle East therefore gaining more fans and demand. Hypocrisy at it's finest. :)
DVD distributors need only to do one thing: Lower the cost of DVD's. Big Lots has proven that people will buy loads of DVD's for movies or shows they have never seen at a low price (from 3 to 5 bucks). DVD's cost pennies to make and buy lowering cost, that means more people can AFFORD to buy the product and possible increasing viewers.

I know you said "most" but just to clear the air with everyone else I never though of Vampire Hunter D as Yaoi. The artwork (inspired by Yoshitaka Amano's effeminate drawings) certain retains some of that, but the women in that series are even more bursty and full figured than most any other manga and anime. The stories themselves have nothing to do with Yaoi, and any homosexual references are quite minimal. In fact I highly recommend everyone check out the VHD manga series!

So the Manga Indutry.I s at the Point where the Anime Industry is for some time now?
And why does every type of Media Industry make the same Mistakesm and never try to lern from others?
Will that stop Scanlation completrly? Nope.
But it will give fans ans scnalators a chance to switsh sides. It's Crunchyroll.com all over again. To hack down an the fanbase without even consider, why the Fanbase does something. Is not smart. To give them what they want is. Then they can go leagl on the rest (if they want).

This is ... interesting news, to say the least. It does sound like this is exactly what many want and although it is mostly yaoi, it is still progress in that area.
It seems a nice alternative to legal action, although I'm not sure how the higher-ups will determine who gets in trouble and who does not. Anyway, nice video Marzgurl. Always good to hear about more going on in the anime and manga world.

No problem on the manga front. Though, if you changed your news to Animanga News Editorial, it could work.
Thanks to sites like Crunchy Roll, we are finally able to legitimately watch our favorite anime that we would otherwise never see unless we bought a box set. With the exception of Shonen Jump, we don't have magazines which offer weekly issues of our favorite manga and unless we perused through the graphic novel section of Borders (which, apparently, they frown upon) or purchased a $12 volume, we're kinda out of luck.
-
06.24.2010 - 09:58 | Nifar
Hell, even with Shonen Jump, we're still kind of out of luck. I eventually stopped buying SJ after the third or fourth time they quit running a series right in the middle and replaced it with something I wasn't interested in.
At least Yen Plus is more consistent, even if the quality isn't as great. I can't speak for Shojo Beat, having avoided it like the black plague, but I can't imagine that it's much better than SJ, given that they're from the same company.
There are other magazines as well, but not terribly many in the States. Occasionally you'll get lucky and find something online that's published in Britain or Australia/New Zealand that we don't have here, but that's a rarity.

If the american manga industry wants to stop scanlation, they need to pull their heads out of their asses and change a few BIG things.
1) have weekly releases for weekly series. People don't want wait a month for something that's meant to be read on a weekly basis.
2) Stay up to date with japan. the anime industry seems to be catching onto this, however, the final and most important thing that needs to be done is something that NO official distributors seem to have as a priority...
3) TRANSLATE THE SOURCE MATERIAL FAITHFULLY
until these things are done, I'll stick with my unofficial scanlations, thank you very much.
-
06.24.2010 - 17:35 | hellzabethIt's a difficult issue really, especially for people such as myself who live in countries that don't usually get manga translated. There really is very little legal way to get manga here, short of finding it on Ebay and the internet, and that's just not easy for browsing titles.
I'm glad it's getting legalised in America, and that people are working together on it though.

This is a very interesting turn of events and it actually inspires some hope. I'm not a manga reader, but, if publishers in general of manga and anime alike are willing to work with the people who've been doing fan translations for stuff that otherwise would never see light stateside, we might finally end up with a legal, quality, and safe method of viewing anime and manga over the web for little or no cost.

Very interesting news indeed, although I don't think I would be interested in stuff this company releases, but it would be cool if other companies did something similar.
I have to ask though, who is that guy supposed to be that has been appearing in the title cards? Is that the artist, or just a random Anime fan?
