Anyway, ugh. The idea that you have to spend a large sum of money just to have the ability to then buy books on top of that is really alarming, you know that? My internal member of the proletariat is screaming at the classist injustice of it all.
The more popular these things get the more worried I become. You shouldn't have to have that much money to freaking READ.

i agree with you.
i think that apple likes to trick people into buying their stuff but sometimes they are really awsome like the itouch, though overpriced.
none the less i'm sure a cheaper copy will come out soon so no worries. :P

Yeah having all the manga in your ipad is nice but there is a problem. Here's an experiment that anyone can try (however I suggest no one do it). Take a Hammer, and hit a book. Yeah hit the book a few times. Hell throw the book on the floor. Throw the book up against a wall. Tell me can you still flip through the pages? I bet you can. Now try doing that with any Electric equipment. It wont last. Hell if something happens to the equipment, guess what!!! you got to get another one and get those books yet again!
I agree, we should keep the books. Great one Marzgurl.

Yes, Marvel Digital comics shoutout!
On topic though, I don't really mind the digital sale of books and manga, but what really bothers me is them being solely available on one specific media form. I'd buy these books and manga if I could read them on my laptop, but I'm not going to spend my money on three different e-readers simply to read the each Sony, Kindle, and Ipad exclusive manga.

I hear ya Marzgurl. I still don't have an iPhone or iPod touch for the same reason. I'd rather have a device that does one thing well then a device that does a lot of stuff you don't really want.
I don't get the appeal of the iPad either. It doesn't really seem that practical when it comes to its size and portability.

They could at least release digital copies that you can buy and read on any computer. The iPad is ridiculous, and well out of the price range of most people, considering what little it can actually do; if I had $500 to drop on any electronic device, I'd save $500 more and get a tablet.
Maybe the publisher will come to their senses and just make a book eventually, but all the same, its unfair to make the majority of the people interested in reading this wait for that.

I understand where you're coming from.
Since my sister has an ipod touch and my parents have iphones, I do find it rather cool.
But releasing a managa JUST for the ipad? That's stupid. And if they're going to make the book downloadable why not make it downloadable for the computer as well? The whole ipad thing was stupid in general anyway, it's just a giant ipod.

I agree 100% with you MarzGurl. I understand the economic and enviromental advantages of digital media, but the inicial investment, as well as the uncertain cuntinual support, with out the "special" feeling form the books is hardly worth it.
By the way let me do the calculation. Let's say a volume of manga is 10$ in paperback and 2$ digital. You save 8$ each purchase. So by your 63rd purchase you would break even, for a 500$ device. That is a lot of manga. Yes, no astronomical, but it is somewhere near half of my printed collection, an investment I'm not ready to make.

Ugh, if I wanted to read it in digital, I'd just read it for free online. 500$ for the abillity to read manga? Lame. Besides, I like to have the books, so I can put them on my Shelf of Awesome.
:3 Shelf of Awesome: PS3, Wii, 360, VCR, DVD player, CD player, television, games, Structure deck boxes, figurines I got for my birthday, and the wall of Shonen Jump and Manga.
Anyways, iPad will soon be replaced by something even better. lol

06.10.2010 - 14:23 | RocketGruntKennyYou know, iPads or Kindles can be used to do other things than just read some obscure manga not many people have heard of. For example, function as a laptop, internet connection and MP3 combo (iPad) or so she can get many more books at an absurdly cheap price over time. Yes, it's stupid to get both devices for that one manga, but just think wisely and use those devices for OTHER things, too. If you don't want to, then wait. Good things come to those who wait.

When I first saw the iPad I just thought to myself: Are they serious? What's the big deal? It's a giant iTouch which is honestly stupid. iTouch's are fun for their small size and portability. If you want a laptop, get a laptop! Who needs all those stupid apps!
That's why they're doing stuff like that. Making things people want available ONLY for the iPad so people will eventually, whether they want to get it or not, sort of need one for one reason for another. It's a good and somewhat evil marketing scheme.
-
Yeah, I feel the same way about all the icrap. why am I buying it in the first place? oh yeah, FOR A FUCK'N MUSIC PLAYER, THATS WHY! they can keep all their ipads and ipod Touches and ipod Molesters and ipod Hal 9000s and lightsaber apps and whatever! I'm sticking to the ipod nano,on which I have songs. only songs. well, and a few audio books, but thats it.
-
06.09.2010 - 23:54 | yakuWell said! Unless ipads cost 400 dollars less, they aren't a worth investment for reading books and/or comics.
Heck if it wasn't for a space issue, I'd take a full blown old fashioned library with all my favourite titles taking a whole room in exchange of my e-reader.
-
06.09.2010 - 23:56 | Punky
I agree with you, it's more money to spend and believe me the iPad it's not a big deal, the only thing that I find cool is that you can have some kind of interaction with some of the books like this one (which if I ever get an ipad, maybe if I win one or something cuz im not buying it, this is the first book to buy)
http:// www.youtube.com/watch? v=gew68Qj5kxw
Also, the kindle is really cool (I borrowed one from a friend) BUT it broke just by doing a update, so it's not worth the money.
Now I won a Sony reader on a blog convention 2 months ago and I like it, It's not the same as reading from a book, but for some reason I read faster with it, and looking at the prices they're not that expensive as an ipad. Sooner or later this will be what reading will look like, it's the sad truth, so my recommendation is that if you find the money, buy yourself a reader, it doesn't have to be a stupid ipad and believe me it's worth it.
Also that manga looks really cool, going to check it out ^_^.

Oh for the love of....this is just getting ridiculous. I'm not about to spend 500 bucks on something I can get for a lot cheaper (especially if I don't have to worry about said 500 dollar item crashing).
Hell at the rate we're going in the whole "let's make life easier so we can be lazy assholes" category, we are all gonna be those little fleshball people from Wall-E within the next few decades.

The iPad, in its current incarnation, is a waste of money. Maybe someday, in the future, when Apple works out the kinks, and make better deals with other companies, the iPad will finally live up to the oh so overblown hype it has received, but right now, I don't think so.
Of course, maybe switching to a digital format might not be so bad in the long run when it comes to reading comics. I own about 300-400 copies of manga, and about 2000 Marvel Comic books, not counting my trade paper backs and hardcovers. If I could start over, maybe I would invest in one $500 piece of tech in order to get cheaper comics via the internet...
... on second thought, fuck that! It's not really a comic if you can't hold it in your hand.
By the way, speaking of Japan, this week I went to a huge Japanese festival in the middle of Central Park in NYC. I even made a video about it: http:// xtremenetworkonline.com/ partners/anime-for- dummies/513-anime-for- dummies-special-japan- day-2010. I hope you guys like it, and if you are in NYC next year, I hope you come by and check it out.

Anything I-Related is a joke. It's overpriced and not very user friendly. I'm still trying to figure out why the heck an I-Pod isn't Plug and Play.
As far as getting the book- Try alternate import sites or use Japan's amazon. Not sure the shipping price, but the bilingual is about $11.50 on there. I've ordered from Amazon UK and Amazon German being in the US, so i'm sure you can order from Amazon JP as well.

06.10.2010 - 00:41 | magnutI really want a E-reader/tablet because of space. Look I need that extra Ikea Bookshelf that is made for dvd's (I mean manga) But it just doesn't fit in my room. (Moving with every 100th comic isn't a option)
A tablet could limit the pain but indeed the price. Like with the PSP I really hate the idea of digital price = disk price. Especially if you spent a lot of on a expensive memory disk.
I'm really hoping tablets will be cheap soon with legal providers. I really looking at (all ready free) webcomics (Ikki Viz and penny arcade) and the crunchyroll for manga like services. (Yen plus 2.0!!!)
Also the manga in the article sounds interesting.

06.10.2010 - 01:02 | jz1337I don't think I'll ever get an ipad or an iphone either. I don't see the point. Everything the iphone can do, my laptop can handle, and usually better. All those apps? Pretty much free on a laptop. And if I'm going somewhere where I can't bring my laptop, it usually means I'll be too busy to care what app my iphone has.
As for ipad...why? Why would I want to pay 500 dollars to pay to read a book? I really can't say whether or not it'll catch on or not, because my opinion seems to differ quite a lot from general consumers. But I say stick to the damn books.

I'm not very tech savvy, even though i have a ps3, psp, and DSi to name most of my things. Why on earth buy something that i could easily lose or break in half if all it's going to be used for it reading things?
