05.14.2010 - 21:34 | kkslider5552000Yay, one of the few companies that can actually get anime on TV is gone after spending the last 2+ years doing everything they can to apologize to anime fans! And they might be bought by Funimation, making anime in America closer to a Monopoly!
Wait...

05.16.2010 - 14:06 | thatgirlwiththepearlsHell yeah! There are so many teenagers and young adults who love that anime so much with a praising passion, they exploded with rabid and compassionate anger at how 4kids handled it because the purely unadulterated content in the original Japanese version made it wildly popular in Japan alongside being more appealing to the teen/young adult demographic in the Western world!
-
05.16.2010 - 21:19 | johnkenpwnsThat's probably what did 'em in! XD
You gotta admit, though, that they did help make one hell of a TMNT series...
...not that it means anything now, but it's something to consider. :D

05.14.2010 - 21:35 | americanheezeHere's hoping we finally get that 4th season of Yugioh GX and they COMPLETELY redub Yugioh 5D's, if not the whole three series (retaining Dan Green of course)

05.15.2010 - 03:29 | GeorgeWhy, Yu Gi Oh is one of the worst anime ever, and that's just the Japanese version. The art designs are hilariously bad, the animation is stilted and movement free, the plot is so convoluted and complicated that no one could ever make it out without becoming a complete nerd, and even if they could work it out, it's too inheriently stupid to hold any value.
I was young when I first saw the series on Saturday mornings, but even then, the plotholes were obvious, and a short list of the plotholes in the first season alone are humiliating:
Why does Pegasus have to follow the ancient Egyptians rules? If he's the games creator, the past rules of the Egyptians wouldn't be relevant to modern times.
Why does he hold a tournament in the first place, and allow the two people who hate him more than anyone else in the world to be on his island?
Why doesn't Kaiba just kick him in the balls, and beat him until he gets his brother back?
Why is Kaiba on the island in the first place? He only challenged Pegasus because his stupid, useless younger brother came with him to the island.
Why did they have to give Pegasus those "Glory of the Kings" cards to participate in the match? Why not just ban anyone who doesn't have them from entering the island in the first place? If he was going to do that, why did he even have those useless star chip matches?
Why does no one notice that Yugi suddenly grows a foot taller, and speaks in a different voice every time he duels?
Why does Pegasus have cards that are based on American cartoons even though for some reason the cards have to be based on the original Egyptian cards? If he could do that, why didn't he just create an invincible card that would win no matter what?
Why did Mokuba come to the island if he has no ability to help anyone?
Why is Kaiba the head of an international corporation, isn't he supposed to be a teenager? And if Kaiba has that kind of money, couldn't he just get a bunch of invincible cards, and never worry about losing?
Why do they act like there's so much strategy involved in a game that's 50% luck, and 40% how much money you have to buy cards that don't suck?
I may be misinformed, but if I heard correctly, the third series is literally about duel monster games on motorcycles in a post apocalyptic future. Why would anyone past the age of 14 waste their time on this series?
-
05.15.2010 - 17:31 | Penguin General
It's not post apocalyptic, I can tell you that. I, personally, watch it as a bit of fun and to see what ways Yusei manges to win. In regard to why anyone over the age of 14 would watch it, they would probaly watch it as the characters do things in a way that sort of makes sense this series (for the most part anyway  ),

05.17.2010 - 23:36 | GeorgeActually, the manga is even worse than the anime, because, according to Wikipedia, when Pegasus got his Millennium eye, he was granted one wish, which he wasted on using it to only see his wife again, rather than wish her back from the dead, thus creating a plot hole so massive, it derails the entire series.
And while the plot holes from the Marik Arc and the Atlantis Arc were more numerous, all the plot holes I listed above were from the Pegasus Arc, which actually followed the manga. And that wasn't even listing every absolutely stupid thing in the manga alone.
And even if the manga was a masterpiece, which it isn't, that still doesn't make the anime any less mockable, in fact, if the anime was a masterpiece, it would actually be worse, because they would have had a good template to go off of, but instead made it into something so shamelessly trashy.
I actually like a lot of anime and manga, I'm a huge fan of Berserk, Yu Yu Hakusho, Monster, Trigun, EVA, Fullmetal Alchemist, Princess Tutu (yes, that's not a typo), even Death Note is great, despite those fascist bastards in the Kira clan. The difference is, those series would be just as good and respected if they weren't Japanese, I don't watch anime and read manga because they're Japanese, I do it because I want to see a good story, and if Yu Gi Oh were made by, say, Hannah Barbera, rather than a Japanese studio, it wouldn't have any defenders who like it because it's foreign and exotic. It would be ripped apart because of the disposable Saturday morning fluff that it is.
And for those who say it's no worse than other Saturday morning fluff, you're wrong. At least most brainless kids cartoons don't pretend to have a plot, and demand that you pay attention to insanely complex and made up rules just to get involved in them.
-
Actually, Pegasus's wording was "I wish to have my wife back", and since he idd not specify, he was out of luck when Shadi called the loophole.
What plot holes?
Technically, btw, u pay attention to complex made up rules just by being part of society, so why should t.v. be different?
-
what plot holes? most of those are explained.
1. Pegasus doesn't have to follow the rules, hence why makes cards that could not possibly have existed then, but he wanted to be authentic about bringing the game to the present. IT's like restoring a piece of art, you make it authentic, but you also add in modern tools.
2. He holds the torunament mainly to have fun, and because he has to legitimately win a Milenium item or it's worthless, or Shadi will steal it and return it to its owner. as for Kaiba, he tried to have Kaiba removed, and failed, so he ahd to permit him.
3. How exactly would beating a person get said person to use their magic to relase the soul of your brother?
4. You got ur story wrong. Kaiba is on the island to get his brother back because Pegasus kidnapped the brother and held the brother on the island. Makes perfect sense that kaiba would go there.
5. Pegasus gave out those cards with the star chips and gloves, so frankly it should have been obvious that they were important. Banning those without them would have been imposssible because he only knew Yugi would be in the finals, not who the other finalists might be, and since he invited hundreds, maybe thousands, to compete, the star chips were a way to eliminate the extra people.
6. They do notice eventually, lol, but I wonderd that too at first.
7. He ran out of egyptian monsters, so he started creating his own to have more new cards. He did create the ultimate card, Exodia.
And 1 ultimate card wold make the game boring.
8. Mokuba was brought to island in captivity as a person who was kidnapped.
9. Age means nothing, he bought the company from his step dad, remember? There is no such thing as an unstoppable card, since the game is more strategy then power.
10. I diasgree. More 30% luck, 40% strategy, 30% money
11. That isn't a question, it's an insult.

4kids Entertainment is the embodiment of all that is evil: greedy, idiotic, uncompromising, ignorant, vindictive, and cruel. They are the ultimate enemies of great artistic creations in general and of anime in particular. They take anime and strip them of all their good qualities till nothing but marketability and shallowness remains. They lay waste to any possibility of depth, good writing, good humor, and complex characters, replacing with the worst of shallow children cartoon cliches. They are the epitome of everything that every Western Otaku hates about the American anime market.
-
05.16.2010 - 14:08 | thatgirlwiththepearlsI agree wholeartedly. We must be really proud of ourselves to have the Seven Deadly Sins and the Seven Holy Virtues memorized aside from knowing and remembering the vast importance of constantly abiding by the Seven Holy Virtues ourselves in order to spend our afterlives in heaven.

The same thing that's so bad with Disney - they produce entertainment for young audiences, and that's horrible to people over the age of 12 who think everything needs brutal violence and/or gratuitous nudity to be entertaining.
Don't get me wrong - I'm no prude. I've watched Funimation's sub of Sekeiri. But I just don't see what's wrong with one company dubbing a few anime shows that parents can be comfortable with (and I don't even have kids), thus drawing kids to anime at a young age.
Edit: Just wanted to say that I appreciate everyone's response to this. Debate and discussion are good.

05.15.2010 - 01:37 | Mizu Takishima
While I agree that hostility towards 4kids from anyone over the age of 12 is for the most part, unnecessary and tend to be for all the wrong reasons, (aka spazz about violence/nudity/etc being censored) there's a few other things people don't like about them.
Basically it's everything that DWP102589 said, but I also don't like the idea of..."softening the blows" even on children's programming.
Kids need to be exposed to the extremes of both good and evil, and contrary to popular belief, kids -can- handle "bad" stuff; i.e. Death in cartoons/anime. (Plus, kids love violence)
If it weren't for these helicopter-soccer-moms who'd even complain about Pokemon Battles being "too violent", well, who knows, maybe 4kids wouldn't have had to censor as much as they did in whatever they licensed :'D (Though too many bad puns is their own fault and inexcusable I say)

I don't think thats it. I don't have a problem with family-friendly entertainment, either. But if they have to butcher a show up in order to make it "kid friendly", then they probably should've passed it up. And 4 Kids did some weird crap to the anime shows; just look up "4 Kids hates riceballs" on youtube; they tried to hide riceballs in Pokemon on a few occasions. Why? They couldn't have just called them riceballs? I mean God forbid kids learn about foods from other cultures...

Hey, I'm 18 and I love "The Lion King." I also think that "Saving Private Ryan" would have been a worse movie if it wasn't rated R.
Sorry, things aren't as cut-and-dried as you would like. Certain creative visions don't require violence and some do. For those that do, is it fair to remove the violence for the sake of marketability?

05.16.2010 - 10:42 | KariI'd agree with you, rowdycmoore, except that instead of starting with anime for a young audience, they seem to start with anime for a middle of the road audience, and dumb it down and tame it till it's for a much younger audience. I don't have a problem with their goals, I have a problem with their methods.

To make DWP102589's point more clear:
4kids has been known to cut and change a lot of scenes for the worse due to "Amerizanization".
Certain important scenes relative to the plot have been cut.
Characters have been changed to be more "American" to the point it's racist (turning a pirate in One Piece from black to white and turning Jinx from Pokemon from black to purple).
The dialogue is riddled with lame puns and immaturity, especially during serious scenes (why I dropped YGO during the DOOM/DOMA arc and haven't seen it since).

I'm hoping to start my own anime review series and if I do, I'm hoping to make the 4kids English dub of One Piece my main, longest, and angriest review. Hearing this news really made my day and would add a new dimension to that future review. Thanks

05.14.2010 - 21:41 | kkslider5552000seriously, I'm not a huge 4kids fan, but they are one of the few people that can actually get anime on tv that isn't already proven to be a ratings winner. (mostly toyriffic anime)
Just a question what is so bad about 4 Kids?
Basically outside of Pokemon, Ultimate Muscle and maybe Dinosaur King, they dubbed anime and made it TOO child friendly by even the standards that they were required to make it child friendly. Although, most of the hatred really began from refusing to continue uncut dvds and the awful One Piece dub that took a made for kids (in Japan though...which is different) and made it for kids in America and butchered to death, some god awful voice acting, lame puns and lines and parts of the story ruined.
Just so you know.
But they've had subbed uncut episodes on their youtube channel and have done a lot to apologize to anime fans for the horrible dubs.
-

Oh ok I understand now thank you the only things I seen from them are pokemon way back when and tmnt forever and that was good.
-
05.14.2010 - 21:53 | kkslider5552000also to contradict...myself...kin d of...looking at the horrible voice acting for even the newer stuff from voice actors I like, I can certainly more than see that even in 2009 where 4kids has mostly learned their lesson that some people need to go. And stop giving terrible direction or lines or whatever is causing good voice actors to sound awful.
(there's an edit button, I feel dumb now :()
While I love to see better dubs than what 4kids typically does, they some how keep surviving and end up on TV. Which means more anime exposure on TV. As long as they don't dub anything that needs too much editing, I'm fine with whatever. But, I'm worried that no matter how better the company that gets 4kids is, they won't be able to get anime on TV anywhere near as easily. It's not fair that I might be right (and I think I probably am) but that's life I guess.

R.O.D. the TV- mostly for the children. They hired actual children to voice the middle and high schoolers. . . and they were GOOD!
Silent Mobius. The subs are useless, and the dubs are full of what would appear to be some pretty clever improv, which would piss most people off, but I liked it.
Shakugan no Shana. The voice actors are good, and in the original, there was one case where I had to wonder how that woman got her job.
YuYu Hakusho is just epic, mostly for Kuwabara.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Watch the first episode and you'll know why.
Hellsing. There's nothing wrong with the subs. I usually watch it with them on, while the dubs are also playing, because the English voice actors are really good.
I can come up with more if you need me to. Man, I need a life.
-
maybe this is a good group to ask what are some good dubbed animes. I would watch subs but I just can't get used to it.
FullMetal Alchemist is probably the best dub ever.
Actually outside of the occasional bad dub, almost anything Funimation dubs.
Also a big fan of the dubs of the big 3 (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece), School Rumble and Slayers.
I also remember Digimon Tamers and Yu Yu Hakusho having amazing dubs but I haven't seen them in years so...

05.15.2010 - 03:33 | GeorgeI don't get the love for the Bleach dub, sure, it has Johnny Young Bosch in it, but half of the acting in Bleach sucks. Especially the guys who play Hitsugaya, Aizen, and Ichimaru. They absolutely do not get their characters, and seeing as how Hitsugaya, Aizen, and Ichimaru are the most popular characters on the show, it's a big problem.

Best. News. Ever.
I have boycotted buying Sonic X from them, and hopefully, if someone with competence gets the license, I may actually see my lovely hedgie in Japanese with subtitles... or... actors that actually work for their roles! or... and intro that isn't rap!
I must shamefully admit giving them money during the height of the Pokemon mania, but recently the license to that franchise has been slipping away from them, much to my chagrin.
