I don't think you're told enough how well put together and informative your videos are.
They are, and you are.
Thank you.

I'm with you on wanting the actual DVD's/manga. I've spent thousands on my manga collection and some of my friends ask why I don't just go online to read them. I like having the actual book and not burning my eyes at a computer screen. Also by buying the manga its telling the publishers what I like and want to see more of.

I liked buying manga, too, until I found out they price gouged on all manga. Even at $10 they're still charging about $5-$6 more than Japan.

I still have over 100 books of manga, but half of them were bought used at a store called Hastings, where they cut the price in half on all used books. I feel just fine spending $5 on a ~200 page B&W manga book. I don't have the money to buy $10 books all the time, and I've had to severely cut back this year.

I definitely can't afford to have a huge anime collection, though in years past I did buy several box sets. If there's a new show coming out that I need to see, I just use Netflix. I bought the first volume of Lucky Star, but I can't afford to blow ~$200 on one anime series so I just resort to renting until they put out a cheap box set in 2011.

Old dubbed series are especially cheap right now. Slayers (the first three series' 78 episodes) is on Amazon.com for $39 right now. Ranma season box sets are out for around $30. The new stuff I just have to rent.

Off topic, Dena's one of the very few people on earth to have the entire DVD set of Maison Ikkoku. For some reason after Volume 3, they manufactured very, very small amounts of volumes 5, 6, 7, and 8, and most of the voice cast was changed. Godai left to become that tall doofus cop on Monk.

When I read the title, I thot you meant all websites and my mind nearly exploded

But now that I know its all cool

Im starting to use streaming anime as my resource for seeing anime online recently. I'll be honest, I used to download a lot of anime (and I still do a lil bit I will admit) but I've been trying not too recently since Im older. Back then, I was a young teenager with no job with no way to get these things, I just couldnt ask my parents to fork out the money for it all the time.

Now Im 19, lookin for a job, Ive bought some anime boxsets from gift money and money I made working for my dad in the past. Once I have a steady income, Imma buy most of my anime

Misleading title but you raise some good questions about the future of the industry. Have fun in Japan! :silly: (this is my jealous face)

I don't have a very large anime collection, but when I was a kid and looked through my VHS collection, I always had that same sense of accomplishment in physical ownership. Funny, few people bring that up in debates over purchase vs. streaming, no doubt leading to the conclusion of being the "minority" on that side.

Either way, it only seems a fan's obligation to make sure that the company that brings such great entertainment is able to be financially rewarded for it. It should be a win/win solution to keep such shows/movies available for years to come. I don't have a solution of my own, but if it's as simple as a small fee for streaming, I'm in support.

Have a fun and safe trip Marzgurl. Does this mean we'll be seeing a bit less ANE in the upcoming weeks, or just a change of scenery? Whatever the result, have an awesome time.

I'm one of those people who buys, it's very rare I can stream stuff since it gives me the "Your region does not allow this to be viewed" message and I prefer owning stuff, so it's no big loss for me in the end.

Marzy, you are not alone, I too have avoided watching The Slayers: Revolution and any level of spoilers about it until I can pick up the series on DVD.

For me, the streaming is a "try before you buy" thing. Even though I've seen the entire series of "Ouran High School Host Club" online, I still want to get the DVDs/Blu-Rays at some point. Because I can't rely on online streaming quality all of the time (FUNimation site excluded, although I've had issues of getting out of full screen after watching shows on there). I like having the extras.

Hi Marzgirl.

I love your videos.

I feel that streaming is important and necessary for those who cannot afford to spend money on DVDs. It also allows anime fans to try out a new anime before they buy, or become interested in new titles that they would not normally get into.

However, streaming has not yet become popular or profitable enough to make a major difference in anime company's bottom line.

Recently, Crunchyroll.com has decided to stop their 'download to own' program because it is not as profitable as their apple application. As older streaming methods are phased out, new ones have come along to replace them, and improve on them. So, whether you like streaming or not, their is really nothing to worry about.

By the way, I know this is a little late, but last week, you were talking about Dance in the Vampire Bund. Well, your video inspired me to make a video expressing my own opinion on censorship in anime. Here it is:

http:// xtremenetworkonline.com/ partners/anime-for- dummies/320-anime-for- dummies-battle-of-the- planets

My friend, The Shades, also addressed it in his podcast, The Rising Sun. Here it is:

http:// xtremenetworkonline.com/ podcasts/the-rising-sun/ 321-the-rising-sun- episode-10

I wonder what you think.

P.S. You're going to Japan? Cool. I went last October: http:// www.youtube.com/watch? v=KTAJtPY41BA

I don't know if I've ever heard someone do a good a job at expressing both sides of the streaming/DVD issue before. Bravo!

That said, I think there's an important element to the whole streaming thing that you failed to mention. Many industries (anime included) aren't making a profit off streaming content simply because they too inefficient and poorly run to do so. Drawing in a bigger audience won't result in profit if the company behind everything is still burning off millions of dollars. But then, I guess that's not really what this video was about.

I also prefer to have anime/manga in there physical forms... Since I don't have a lot of cash I do tend to watch some online... more so to preview shows... like watching a few episodes to then see which shows I really like... that is where streaming really shines... not for watching all anime or an entire show.

I have also rented anime through netflix... which has become increasingly challenging... given the fact that they don't seem to replace volumes when they become unavailable... (some I can understand since they aren't being made anymore...)

I tend to buy manga the most (since it is almost always better then the anime...) and it is even worse reading online... doesn't feel the same as having the book. And with manga I tend to just preview it online to see if I'd be interested or not...
• Hamel
I totally agree with you MG
My game and manga collection is huge, and with blu-ray now I am trying to buy more anime because I think it's actually worth it now (still overpriced but the quality is there)

Steps to buying anime since fansubs went online:

1)Watch entire series online.

2)If it's good, buy a boxed set. Then watch it again in 3 years.

Due to the bad dubb & sub quality of the past 10 years, I think half of my DVD box sets are fansubs, especially Juubei-chan; the fansubers really put a lot of extras & personal flare into it.

American companies also have what I concider the bad business policy of selling about 3 episodes per $25 disc when I know for a fact that you can fit at least 13 episides on one disc in a nice slim case rather than a chucky one that takes up space. & $25 for 3 episodes? That's about $8 per 20 minutes, outragous.

On the all-digital side, you have to admist that owning/watching/reading digital copies of anime & comics saves a lot of shelf/box space & wastes less paper. You can't zoom in on a nondigital issue of Batman.

Manga is a bit different though. A digital copy wont make up for the portability, collection value, artist support, & drop-of-the-hat need of rereading it as owning them. I have about $3,000 of manga, which I bought in 3 years time while I was still employed.

Hulu is starting to kick everyone's ass when it comes to streaming media, even anime-wise. Now there's actually a program(PlayOn) you can download to your computer(14-day free trial, $40 one-time purchase to have forever) that'll let you watch Hulu videos as well as other services such as Youtube(though only able to access your subscriptions and favorites, as well as videos that have been Featured or are popular - no search function yet) on your TV by way of XBox360, PS3, Wii, or certain other types of converter boxes and Blu-Ray players. Joost's days are numbered period if they don't jump onto such a service.

Most importantly to Hulu, PlayOn doesn't skip their ads. Since Hulu's ads are far less irritating than standard TV ads it's a small price to pay for the benefits. As someone who doesn't get to buy anime as much as I'd like, a service like PlayOn is brilliant. Services like this are the future of digital media, and I suspect it won't be long before iTunes is adding a pay-per-view service using such a system.

Speaking of iTunes, anyone who has it needs to get their ass on there and download Truth in 24. It's up there FREE and LEGAL. And I cannot overstate the greatness of the film. Little off-topic here since it's not anime, but it fits in with the digital media subject a bit. Go. WATCH IT. NOW! (and no they're not paying me. It's just that good)

I didn't know anyone else felt that way about streaming vs. owning a boxed set. I get weird looks from my friends for buying an issue of Shonen Jump or a manga in a trade paperback and they remind me that I can just read them on onemanga for free. I completely agree. The sense of satisfaction is much better when you own a DVD box-set or a physical manga.

Very good editorial, MG. You also bring up a very good topic between purchasing physical copies of media versus buying digital media online. Even though I don't have much of an anime collection, when it comes to CDs and books I prefer the physical copy.

When it comes to CDs I'm proud of the huge collection of jazz CDs that I bought over the years. Even though I make digital copies, I like the discs and the liners that come with it.

When it comes to books, I prefer a physical copy. Reading ebooks on a computer screen hurts my eyes.

Anyway, can't wait to see your next editorial.

If I have the money, I WOULD gladly buy the DVD and Blu-ray copy of anime, but yeah, I have been downloading fansubs. It's easy to get and you get it right away within the week if its a new anime. You've got to have some respect for these subbers who take the time and effort to translate and post them online for free so that others may enjoy a new anime. Mostly for me since I am low on money, I can't just spend money to buy an entire series of anime. Sometimes a digital copy can be better than a hard copy simply because it can't get scratched or misplaced. Sure if you take care of your DVDs, it'll be fine, but in the rare instances that you dropped your DVD on the floor, spilled food, or the player turns into an eating machine, a digital copy is something to have for the sake of having.

My advice, Marzgirl is that, sure go get the physical copy if you can afford it, but until you can, just watch it online in the meantime.
• AlucardsQuest

Yeah it's like I know I'm going to like the new seasons of Slayers, so I go out (or stay in) and buy the DVDs. Something about digital media just doesn't sit right with me for movies and to a lesser extent music. Now with video games however, I'd prefer to have everything in a digital format to the point where I could just open a program and play any game that I want (it's a lot more convenient to create a save point, and then start playing something else rather than keep switching software).

Someday I might have all my Anime movies and TV shows saved to a high capacity memory device, but that's a bit pricey for me right now. If I did have all my Anime and things on digital media, then I'd rather have the industry track my actual interests in what I actually watch rather than what people claim to watch via the outdated Nielson ratings.

To tell the truth I don't watch streaming videos of TV Shows... I'd rather just have them on DVD. Dexter's Lab and Daria in particular.
• kenshindono  - People actually watch whole series streaming these
avatar
Wha..? people actually watch whole shows steaming these days? That blows my mind. As some people have said, i think the only point of streaming is to maybe check out a series to see if you want to buy it or whatever. I personally would never watchs omething streaming online where i cant pause, rewind, ff, ect at a whim. The video quality also isn't there with comercial DVDs or HDTV/BD fansubs.

I do like actual hard copies of stuff myself though, so i agree with Marzgurl on that regard. I like looking at all my DVD's/BDs. Hell i still have some of my OLLLDD anime VHS tapes (anyone remember animevillage.com? ), and even a few old school VHS fansubs for some stuff that never came out o_O now thats oldschool, lol.

Not just anime though, games as well. I have never bought an xbox live game. If i pay for something i want a hardcopy. Not crappy digital data that can get corrupt, or go poof and be a hassle to get when my xbox dies again.
• Formula Fox
Most streaming services allow pausing, rewinding, etc(though PlayOn's only limitation is that fast-forward doesn't work yet). It's just like watching a video on Youtube or TGWTG.
• JMShearer
That's the odd thing about anime for me. I've been watching on and off for pretty close to fifteen years now, and as much as I know I should buy some of the titles I watch to support the companies that make them, I just never do.

Part of my problem is that I'll watch for awhile, then have to quit for one reason or another, only to come back months or years later and remember why I liked a series, or anime as a whole.

Right now, I'm finding some things I liked before and some new stuff that I like on Hulu and Veoh that I should probably buy, but I don't really know where to look.

And of course, too bad about the whole Joost deal. Sounds like they had some pretty good stuff that they've gotta give up the rights to now. Oh well, always other sites, I guess.
• wyspa  - Buying DVD's
avatar
MarzGurl i fully understand your DVD addiction cuz i have same :). However where i live (Eastern Europe) it's hard to get some DVDs. Market of anime here isn't so big and selection of Anime that you can buy on DVD is still only a small fraction comparing to US market. I have around 16+ titles on DVD planing to buy another 6+ from the shows that are released here. A lot of classic shows like Slayers and Cowboy Bebop still don't have DVD releses here and there are almost no anime shows in TV. Wrost than that publishers are willing to release some shounen series rather than some of those classics because it sells better. Thats the main reason i find people visiting steaming sited and downloading anime from the net. I'm a good example to because DVDs that I own are like ~10% of anime I have and watched and not because I'm not willing to pay for them, it's just that I can't buy those 90% of shows here. Hopefully market of anime here is still in growing stage an i see more anime released every year.
