Adult Swim isn't currently available where I live so I'm a bit behind... But they still air anime like Cowboy Bebop and InuYasha? Good shows and all, but really? And two hours of bleach? This new show better be good...
• poetgriot
So wait, is there or is there not gonna be toonami with anime again? :0

Aye, it was a great way of having anime in one block that wasn't late at night.

There still stands the problem of Adult Swim using English Dubs of stuff. Many anime fans such as myself refuse to watch English Dubs due to the way they mutilate characters and take things into different context than the original.

It's also possible that one of the new titles will be one of the English Dubs that completely changes the anime from the ground up so that it's a completely different show with the same animation frames. We don't know, really, but if it's a bad English dub, or one that makes the anime much less enjoyable, then less people will watch it, thinking that the original Japanese is just as bad.

It's also possible that they may end up being the kind of anime that just plain suck (Whether they're English or not).

Toonami, if I recall correctly, showed English Dubs that were at least respectable.

As for 2 hours of Bleach? Well, I guess some people will find that bearable because to my knowledge, there are approximately 5 trillion episodes of Bleach currently made.

I screamed bloody murder when I heard they were going to show a few episodes of the english dubb of Jubei-Chan. It's an old favorite, but the dub was unforgivably horrible.

I'd like to see the soon to be dubbed "Bokurano" show up on adult swim rather than Bleach over and over again.
Congrats Redscript, love the title card. :D

Nice editorial MG. Speaking of [adult swim], have you ever seen The Venture Bros. (which is made by a different production company.), and if so what do you think of it? I can kinda get where you stand on the Williams Street shows, but VB doesn't really have their kind of humor, and the animation is eons beyond WS. I kinda think you might like VB.
• Lannden_light
Thats one of my favorite shows on all of TV and the only adult swim i enjoy besides the occasional Robot Chicken or Boondocks.

Adult swim really hasn't been the same since Aqua Teen Hunger Force and now the majority of shows seem to be aimed at the 20 something stoner or frat douche. Hell they even had a programing block called the adult swim stoner series.

Ahhh, good ol' Toonami. I miss the days of Rurouni Kenshin and Yu Yu Hakusho.

And honestly, Marzgurl, to add to the list of guilty parties, there may be another group to consider: fans who want new stuff, are tired of the same stale anime, but will watch it anyway because there's nothing else on. I'm guilty of this concerning FMA and Cowboy Bebop, because while I want something new, I'll settle for these because they're all I have (no Funimation or Japan channel on basic college cable).

While I may want what's new, I'm not getting it, aside from YouTubing GTO and other such anime.

Also, four straight episodes?! I grew out of interest with Bleach for a while, and now it's so far gone I gave up on catching up. So now two whole damn hours are dedicated to it?! I won't stay up late enough to catch the anime I actually like!
• animem  - uhhh...
I think you put Toonami name by mistake on the title card :?:

You're right, attempting a fix now.
• Saturn
Thanks for the update, MarzGurl. While I agree with most of what you said, I'd love to see more Big O. At least season one. That one was good. I didn't know that Williams Street was responsible for the anime on Toonami, though. It didn't stop them from giving us good series (YuYu, Kenshin) at first. I guess BoBobo was their vengance on the anime lovers.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go watch a disk of my Cowboy Bebop box set.
• poetgriot
Bobobo was awesome and you know it.
Do not deny that that crack dream was a wonderful way to mellow out after a stressful day, what with the fun colors and the weird hero.
Man I miss that show. Amongst others. I wish there was an anime channel gosh darn it.
• jz1337
I agree with you on the most part. Williams street clearly doesn't like anime, one only look at their april fools jokes in the past that targeted anime both on a saturday and sunday.

But I wouldn't blame the fans too much for the lack of new anime. Until Last august, AS spent a year screwing around with the schedule and pushing new anime to the 3am graveyard shift as well as not showing any repeats even of shows that series just finished its first run.

Basically the guys at Williams street are assholes but they know there is no little competition for showing anime, so they can afford to be assholes and know people will still watch...

I think this was done by Marzgurl...I dunno why.

I still don't get your problem with bleach. It has action, comedy, large supporting cast, strong female characters, and a good dub. just because something is popular doesn't mean you have to hate without giving it a chance. please quit flaming it
• jz1337
I like bleach too but I wouldn't call Orihime a strong female character, Rukia and Yoruichi are competent but the latter hasn't really been in the show as of late...but I get what you're saying.
For some reason it seams the more popular a show is, the more people that don't like it hate it and claim it is overrated.
• Kistasha1508

Bet you the new show is Soul Eater.
(Praying that the new show airing is Soul Eater)
• SoujiSeta
It's more then likely going to be Soul Eater, Adult Swim has announced that they hold the licenses for Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and InuYasha: The Final Act but neither of those are dubbed yet (FMA might be currently being dubbed but I know nothing of Funi's schedules) and while they haven't announced any licenses to Soul Eater, I don't see it being anything else.

I have to agree, I've never been a fan of William's Street mostly because they wouldn't recognize a good comedy if one walked into the building and started shooting at them, and the blatant hatred they harbor for anime.

I am also in agreement that they need to start showing something new, yeah their lineup is all good anime(subjective to taste of course)but they could probably easily change it up since I know they have the rights several more series they've shown in the past
• SpecterM91
avatar
They don't know good comedy? Tell that to the Venture Bros. Pure retro, nerdy, parody comedy at its finest.
• abyssion1337
avatar
fair enough, venture bros is great, however it's not an original cartoon done by William's street, so I'm not counting it because they have no where near the talent to pull something like it off
• Manic Monkey

In defense of Williams Street they did make the SVES block that had a short run before Toonami went to its death on Saturday and that was a perfect blend of anime and non anime cartoons.

Hell they even had the balls back then to show Dot Hack. Could you imagine them showing .hack on Adult Swim? :D

I miss the old Toonami when I could sit down for those couple hours and watch all those awesome shows back to back. I mean, back at the BEGINNING of Toonami when you had a good variety of anime (ex. the Sailor Moon, Gundam Wing and Tenchi Muyo block). None of these shows appeal to me at all. I've either seen them once and didn't like them or have no real reason to watch them at all.

I can almost guarantee two of the three new anime are going to be Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood and the new Inuyasha series. As for the third, i'd bet on the Haruhi series. Again, nothing i'd watch, but something that everyone seems to love. Although, if they did a run of Soul Eater instead of Haruhi, I wouldn't be surprised at all. That'd actually be something i'd watch.

Now, flame if you want, people, but if you ask me, I'd much rather have constant reruns of Big O, Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, and FLCL than any of the Bleach and Naruto shit that's still being pumped out. It's hard to "grow out" of interesting, thought out shows like Bebop and Ghost in the Shell when you'll be growing into yet another spikey hared hero with a surf board sized sword shooting rape beams at effeminate Dragon Ball rejects.
Williams Street is kind of in the right as far as their hate of anime is concerned; I mean, the vast majority of popular shows these days are just balls awful. I'd kill to have them pick up Hokuto no Ken, the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure movies, and a few other older things. They may hate anime, but at least the ones they're still showing aren't awful... Bleach and Inuyasha aside.
• Dawgstar

Now, now. Let's not confuse 'this show is awful' with 'I do not care for this show.' Oh, wait, this is the internet. Carry on.

In the UK they had an awesome channel by the name of CNX (Cartoon Network X) back in 2003 which had stuff like Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, and Big O, but also British animated stuff like Danger Mouse & Trap Door.

But they shut the channel down and incorporated a miniscule amount of it into Toonami.

Adult Swim airs on a channel not even owned by Turner here. and it's shit despite them promising home grown shows from a UK Williams Street they were planning.

I fully agree with the current state of AS. It, and Toonami, were my source for anime. I'm not such a big fan that I'd spend time hunting down various series and weeding through the muck. Cartoon Network did me a service in bringing many good series to my attention.

Sadly yea. They seem to not really care anymore and I haven't bothered with AS in years due to the stale line ups. I love Bebop, Big O, and Ghost in the Shell. But even I won't settle watching them over and over and over... and over again. Especially now that I own the dvds.
• ChaoticNeutral
I really don't care if Williams Street hates anime or not, when you offer a product, you need to keep up with that product and offer new stuff that is similar to that product so it doesn't get stale.

Really, I think that they should focus more on anime and action and less on the comedy, cause the only good comedy I've seen is Robot Chicken, Titan Maximum, Venture Bros, and the stuff they get from Fox.

Now I have to say this not only to Adult Swim, but to everyone, just because something is British doesn't mean it's funny, The Mighty Boosh isn't funny. While I'm at it Tim and Eric SUCK!! I what to know who green light that P.O.S. cause stupid doesn't always equal funny, it could just be stupid. When it came to Adult Swim I expect 3 things, new funny stuff on Sunday, new kick asses anime action on Saturday, and reruns on the weekdays. Whoever is making these decision needs to be fired.
• Manic Monkey
avatar
We get the majority of our shows from Britain only Americanized. You can't blame Adult Swim for trying to ride the British television show craze.

• SpecterM91
avatar
You're problem, sir, is that you're apparently convinced that you are the ruler of all comedy. I happen to love The Boosh, and The Office, and the completely FANTASTIC Look Around You. I may be biased toward British comedy, but still. I think this is the main problem people are having with AS right now; they all want what THEY ALONE want and nothing more or less. Please, learn that you aren't the center of the universe and accept the fact that some people may enjoy shows that you don't, and may dislike shows that you love. If you ask me, the anime community is part of why Williams Street is so cold toward their anime audience. The vast majority of the fans are opinionated beyond all reason like yourself. It's hard to please people like that.

EDIT: My bad, that was directed at Chaotic, not Manic Monkey.
• ChaoticNeutral
Dude, have you ever heard a rant before, people tend to be little self-centered when doing it and it isn't suppose to be taken so seriously.
• demecowen
Hmmm. you are biased toward AS british comedy, yet everyone else that hate it is a self-center prick  I do love hypocrites sometimes.

Pft, the repetition of the same series (and not even anime, necessarily), over and over, is why I just don't watch Cartoon Network any more. *shrug* The stuff that I liked, such as Cowboy Bebop, I went out and purchased in a discount DVD boxset, so I can watch it any time without commercials. Seriously, if they got their hands on a new series, it would be a great way to expand their viewership, or at least keep their current viewership entertained.
• Zoness
avatar
I'm probably bias, but seeing as I don't care for Bleach I never really counted out how many episodes of Bleach they showed I just found something else to watch or do with my time. Hearing that it's four is actually less than I thought it was (I can't be bothered to check schedules when I don't care) but four back to back still seems pretty extreme.

Does everyone else just like the show that much that they couldn't try showing something else too? If you've got four back to back episodes of anything you can easily knock two of them out to make room for new shows whilst keeping an hour of it if the show really is that popular.

I mean I'm not trying to hate on Bleach, I'm not interested in it but that doesnt mean I hate it or think it shouldn't be aired at all, four episodes just seems a bit much.

I #&!*ing HATE WILLIAMS STREET

They've been *ucking with their schedule ever since Fall of 2008. I used to watch them diligently, partially because of Bleach and the fact that i'm one of those people that MG said would be watching the same anime for like 10 years. The only new anime they've been showing is Bleach and that s only after 2 hours of crap they've bought from other networks. If you want to know why they hate anime is that they get paid more to animate their retarded shows than to just go out and buy new licenses.

And if you want to know the 'NEW ANIME'; is, it's probably FMA Brotherhood since they're moving the regular FMA to the end of the schedule at the same time, which they tried to do to Code Geass, but Bandai got pissed.

As for the 2 hours of Bleach, the only reason why they're doing that is to catch up with the series because they restarted the arc at the beginning of December. (this is not unusual because they've been doing that ever since Inuyasha) They do this to get time to dub the anime.

I personally don't know why they have such distane for anime, paritally because AS would of never happened without anime. And for that matter CN wouldn't of been that good without it and hasn't been as good since they've taken off (i'm looking at you people that canceled Toonami). Cartoon Network used to be the anime channel, whether it be Toonami in its hayday or AS now.

PS if you think this is long you can go on there site and you can see WALLS OF TEXT just on the subject of their schedule.

PPS I needed to vent about this. Sorry.

Actually, at the beginning, Toonami was re-runs of Voltron, Thundercats, and Johnny Quest.
Anyway, back on topic. How is Cowboy Bebop still airing on Adult Swim? I know it's a great series, but it's also what they aired back when the block was created back in 2001.
Probably one of their supposedly picked up shows is the new Inuyasha series.

I'd bet the best burger in town that this "new anime" we're going to get on Adult Swim is going to be the finale of the InuYasha anime.
• cjhitchcock

Yeah I don't watch Adult Swim anymore. The final straw for me was when they moved Code Geuss and Morbito (two really awesome shows) to four'o clock in the morning. That's the quickest way to kill your ratings for a show and I think they did it on purpose so they could get way with showing more crap.

As for the new shows, chances are its Inuyasha: the Final Act or Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Don't get me wrong they're great shows, but they're not exactly new shows either. Now if it was something like Spice and Wolf, that would be awesome, but knowing Adult Swim the series would be too smart for their idiot anime-hating audience.
• Chol Yerlow  - Okay I take it back.
on the forums I had the guts to say that only 4 of the title cars entries were good and the rest were crap. (I never visited the forum again because lets face it I new I would get a backlash for saying it)

Seeing this first title card (and not being one that I picked as good) I'm seeing that maybe I was wrong. It's pretty good. And why this one wasn't one of my pics instead of Karuiru's I'll never know.

Oh and yeah adult swim sucks.
• DRCEQ

Greetings Marz Gurl. I'd to clarify a few things regarding Adult Swim for you. Sorry for the wall of text.

First off, Adult Swim is no longer actually located at Williams Street in Atlanta. They moved out to a different office in a different section of the city a few years back.

Adult Swim has admitted a few times that FLCL is a personal favorite of almost everyone on the staff. It's pretty much the only reason why they insist on keeping the rights to air it.

Cowboy Bebop is *THE FIRST ANIME* they ever aired. It started on the very first night Adult Swim aired back in August of 2001. 2 episodes to wrap up Adult Swim during the last hour at 2 AM EST.

Not only is it one of the greatest animes ever made, but the fact that it's the first one they've ever shown pretty much means that they will not let go of the rights to air it unless Bandai issued a Cease and Desist order (which wouldn't any sense...)

Ghost in the Shell belongs on Adult Swim. It's ratings have been good enough that they also probably won't get rid of it. It's also different enough as far as anime genres and content goes on Adult Swim. It's good for variety.

AS is actually on good terms with Funimation, despite the fact that they lost the rights to air Shin-Chan last year (though Funimation is producing a 3rd season right now.) FMA's ratings have also been exceptionally good and has a strong fanbase following. Variety is another issue.

To finish this whole post up, if AS were to replace two Bleach episodes with Code Geass and Moribito, then they'd actually be showing EVERYTHING they have the rights to air, and then whoever is providing the new anime probably wants AS to air it on their terms so they can release the DVDs along with the broadcast of the show.

*Edit*: Oh yes. Strange as it may be, but AS doesn't own the rights to air the first season of Big O anymore. It's weird, because AS pretty much asked Sunrise to make the 2nd season, so it's more or less the property of Adult Swim, while the first season still belongs to Sunrise.
• LikaLaruku

Catoon Network was already showing their first anime on Toonami, which was was Voltron, in 1997. By the time Adult Swim came out, they'd already shown about 20 anime series on Toonami.

When you;ve seen over 10 years of anime & over 300 series, you won't hold Cowboy Bebop in such high reguard. Hell, old Robotech was better.
• Deka_Hero  - RIP anime on YTV
avatar
Well, i live in Canada, where the only place to go for Anime was YTV before they, for no reason, removed it completely from their line-up and replaced it with Disney Channel imports.

It's sad sense in the past, it was a place for much anime goodness...like how we got the Dub of Gundam Seed Destiny LONG before the american's did, or how the 4th season of Sailor Moon was dubbed just for the canadian market.

So no anime on TV for us canucks. Well, not on cable anyway. There is some On-demand channels, like Anime Network, but its line-up is all 100% garbage that i would not want to touch with a 10 foot poll.

Anyways, as for this blocks programming....Shounen sell's, simple as that.

The more discerning viewers (like yourself Marz and most of the people here i'm sure) may want to see more mature-geared series on TV, but reality is what get's the ratings is "Generic Shounen High-school boy fights robots/the supernatural #234578".

It's series like Naruto and Bleach, that are aimed at boys 8-14 and have alot of fighting, that preform the best in north america. Arguably more refined series don't do so well because the West is flooded with shounen.
• LikaLaruku
avatar
According to the Wiki, you guys still get YTV & it's still mostly anime. Apparently only your cable host or area are no longer supporting it.
• demecowen
I not even going to try to watch these new animes on Adult Swim. After they screw around Moriboto that was the last straw for me. I was lucky to see it from beginning to end and I know I never see on Adult Swim again.

If William Street hate anime that much and plan on screwing around with it why bother purchasing those shows? They could use the money for their crappy shows.
• LikaLaruku
avatar
According to Wikipedia, Williams Street is nothing more than a subdevision of Turner Broadcasting that produces their own homegrown cartoons & are not actually associated with Toonami.
• Isaac232

I can agree with you. I haven't seen AS in years, since I pretty much stuck with manga for all my favorites and sometimes peek at anime I like. Though I can't believe that they've been running this stuff for that long.
Now, Bleach is an understandable case since it's still an ongoing series, thus you can actually keep it going as long as it shows 'new' episodes and maybe catch up with Japan. I would perfer them to slow down by, maybe 2-3 slots.
As for the others, you'd be better just getting new material after a series has run its course. I mean especially with FLCL, how the hell does a 6-episode long series stay on, for four years? You'd be better off showing reruns of Paranoia Agent. I say just have an hour long slot of shows that are still in airing, and if you want to alter them out, do it. Yes, even Bleach can deserve a break.
