    1. Great review
    2. Conan pun=win
    3. Will you be doing an editorial of some kind on the DC's new 52. You've mentioned it a few times, but haven't said what you think about it? (unless I missed it.

    4. FIRST!

This comic sounds pretty cewl but to me for it to fit the image of the Conan I know he'd used a cannon off the pirate ship at the end to sink the sister's ship and leave them adrift as no one takes avantage of him. That'd been a more satifing ending to me!

Though I can't claim to be a fan of Bart Sears' artwork, this wouldn't be the first time his penciling has been somewhat inconsistent. I remember reading the run of Spider-Woman with Mattie What's-Her-Face-Niece-Of- Triple-J when he was doing the art. There were times when it was passable and then there were lots of times where it felt rushed even by his standards.

Also the Tales of the Baudy Barbarian bits had me cracking up harder than I probably should have been.

I love me some Conan, but I haven't touched a book since Savage Sword.
How are the Darkhorse Conan books in general?

EuroSnob: The DH comics are pretty damn good for the most part. Starting off, Kurt Buisiek creates a sort of timeline, organizing a few of the Robert E Howard stories and makes it work. The mix of original and Howard stories is also pretty damn awesome. God In The Bowl will always be one of my favorites.

LAG, have you read the other bits o'the Dark Horse comics? I think Truman took over after Buisiek. Not as great a job, but still pretty fun.

And Arh-Nuld was Conan in name only. He had nothing to do with any variation/take on the character. Bah. I hope this new movie is more in keeping with the books.

Great Top Secret reference there. Love this batshit insane movie ^^ !

And Arnold will ALWAYS be Conan's voice. Pop culture will ALWAYS remember the classics.
(And the accent is just too awesome to forget.)

I loved the intro. I really hope the new movie will not make the old ones irrelevant. I hope it's good, but in its own way.

    The review was good too.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the LAG is one of the most underrated reviewers on the site. His work is excellent and constantly improves whereas a lot of other reviewers have become stagnant recently.

... Why the hell have none of you mentioned the best damn Arnold Schwarzenegger impression in the friggin' world?

Seriously, I haven't seen any Arnold movies in a while, but from what I recall that voice was basically spot on for his late 80s work. I'm friggin' impressed.

That's a pretty boss Arnie impression... and I think we all know that no reboot will approach the awesome of the original Conan film.

I got educatted on my ways of drawing by coping the stuff from the old conan comics. They haven't change that much since it's always Conan on an new exiting adventure. And having his way with the ladies. Now that I think about the only thing that has changed it's the narrative style from back then.

Loved the review; looks like a solid miniseries!

Just wanted to offer a bit of education, though: "tako" is a Japanese word that's pronounced tah-ko, not tay-ko. If you're going to throw in a reference to a foreign word, you might as well pronounce it correctly.

The concept with this story seems to be more of a commentary on all of Conan's combined adventures, rather than an actual story. I really like Conan being genre savvy enough to predict the outcome of many situations. Sort of reminds me of the short story "Troll Bridge" by Terry Pratchett.

GEEK! GEEK! I have a question for you!

    What is best in life?

Actually don't answer that, that's stupid.

    Carry on...

There is only one true Conan.
just like kevin conroy IS batman, arnold IS conan.
The upcoming movie looks ok, but it will never match the first movie unless it pulls more of the fantasy-epic feel from the comics.
    Violence + Lust X Violence = CONAN
  • nhaer042  - Off topic
I hate to get off topic here Geek, but I was wondering what you thought of the upcoming DC relaunch. I've looked around and I haven't seen anything about what you have to say. Anyway, good review and sorry to get off topic here.

I think there's a lot more to the character of Conan than just teenage boy escapism: otherwise, how come other heroes of his ilk have fallen into obscurity? The original Conan as he appeared in Robert E. Howard's stories in Weird Tales was a lot more nuanced: plenty of stories without sex and minimal violence, and Conan doesn't even get with that many of the female characters. Instead, we have a very subtle, complex character whose status as a barbarian among civilized people changes and evolves as he matures, without sacrificing his innate sensibilities or losing his character.

"The Island of No Return" is, to me, endemic of the problem with pop-culture Conan. This is a story all about sex and violence with very little in between: no commentary on civilization and barbarism, not really that much plotting, no supernatural element whatsoever. What's ironic is that the whole "playing the audience's expectations" element with the shadow is exactly the sort of thing Howard himself would do in the original stories, which shows you how played out the comics Conan can be. The fact that Sears chose to go with the Smith helmet, which hasn't been used since the Marvel comics, shows you the sort of sensibilities going into this.
