04.13.2011 - 00:33 | TheKaraI read this as well looking for something in the ultimate universe to read, and yeah it is good, but like most people good tends to drift more towards average than actually good. I loved the art of it, I couldn't stand Hawkeye in it though. But like you I would probably give it 2 1/2 stars as well.

I'm honestly starting to believe Jeph Loeb is a secret agent of DC, sent to Marvel for the sole purpose of screwing things up.
I liked Batman: Hush. It was the series that got me reading Batman comics again. It was fun. And then, he comes to Marvel, and it's...Ultimatum. And Red Hulk. And Onslaught: Reborn, fricking ONSLAUGHT: REBORN. Ugh.
This didn't seem so bad, though.

04.13.2011 - 02:38 | DreamingWingsI didn't think much of the whole Red Hulk thing either. However lots of people seem to dig it and, at least as I've heard, it sold really well and brought in a sizable chunk of new Hulk readers.

04.13.2011 - 08:07 | ProphetTenebraeI'm pretty surprised that Marvel handed Loeb the Ultimates again after the ruinous Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum... I mean, those were just awful, hell Ultimates 3 was worthy of Linkara's ire and he alluded to a review of Ultimatum in that same review.
New Ultimates was... OK, I suppose. 2.5 stars is about right but I'd for me that a lot of that would go toward Cho's art... Ha, I hadn't realised how much like Xena: Warrior Princess he made Zarda.

I liked his work while he was at DC, and even his Marvel "colour" books with Tim Sale. But in my opinion, I feel that after the death of his son Sam, the quality of Jeph's writing has dropped. You can see that in Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum as they were dark and rather disturbing. He's a talented writer, and I hope his work improves soon.

One question though I know about the star trek mirror universe but is that really how the comic universes are?

In all honesty, I think most of Loeb's problems came from the death of his son. He really shouldn't have gone back into the comic industry so soon after such a personally devastating event in his life. His writing seems to be recovering, but it's going to be a long time (if ever) until he reaches his former glory

04.13.2011 - 12:28 | VRaptorXI must disagree on the "Ult X is good" thing. Yeah...it's "better" than the last few issues of UXM, but that ain't saying much.
Ult X is a series that can't come out on time, still hasn't even gotten the main characters together, and half the characters are blatant knockoffs of the ones they killed in Ultimatum. Seriously, did you see the new Blob? And what are we leading towards...new X Men vs new brotherhood? Hurray "originality".
It would have been so much better if Vaughn wrote Ult X. he actually knew how to use B to D listers and turn them into interesting new characters that actually brought something new to the table. Seriously, his work with Dazzler, Polaris, and Longshot was amazing. They should be the new team, not Wolverine's son, Angel mixed with Batman, and emo Jean.
And of course...I love how so far after the whole "Ultimate deaths mean forever" crap they've been spewing since Ultimatum....we've had about a dozen resurrections.
Why should the X Men follow one set of rules when no one else follows it? Why can't Marvel just be honest, Jeph Loeb didn't know how to write the characters so he killed them to make his own "original" creations. The man has broken Ultimate continuity so much already. They killed 30 characters because Jeph didn't understand the line.

"Think of it as a Michael Bay movie in comic book form."
No that's being too nice to it. Ultimatum is far worse than even the stupidest piece of trash Michael Bay has produced. All it was was senseless killing of characters.
I understand Loeb was still feeling stress over the loss of his son and all when he wrote it but that was not a healthy way of dealing with that.
I don't blame him, I blame Quesada for two reasons for this: 1) talking him to start working again too early and 2) because I blame Quesada and Bendis for everything wrong with most of modern day Marvel even when they don't deserve it because they have yet to show me they can make anything of value.
