My only problem with the Kids on the Slope theme is that it isn't a jazz song. The entire premise of the series is that these guys are in a jazz band, and there's a ton of great jazz songs in the soundtrack. So why doesn't the opening match that sound? It's still a fantastic opening, but it falls just shy of being perfect because of that.

I've been meaning to watch Space Brothers. It looks pretty good.

I wholeheartedly agree about the opening of "Kids on the Slope". It just kind of irks me that the opening isn't a Jazz song. Sure, it still works, and sounds good, but why not have it also be Jazz? Maybe that was the intent of the opening, though.

Brilliant as always, happy to see that quite a few of the shows I watched ended up on this list.

It would be kind of interesting to hear what you think of this season's shows as well (though you've probably already done that on ANN...I'll go check)

Well, it does admittedly make me feel a bit better to know that I'm not the only one still watching SAO in spite of how terrible it has gotten.

That said! There were three songs in particular I was looking forward to hearing on this list, and only one of them was fortunate to make it. (Tragedy of tragedies. =P) The first was "Chase the World, from Accel World, Sword Art Online's slightly neglected but far superior sister series. The other was "Synchrogazer" from Senki Zesshou Symphogear, an admittedly rather cheesy music themed magical girl series with a nonetheless rather splendid soundtrack.

(The one I liked that made the list was the JoJo theme.)

SAO might have a weaker overall narrative atm compared to the first arc, but to call it terrible is a bit much.

Fantastic list, though I will admit that I do feel a bit down that Mirai Nikki has yet to be mentioned by you. I don't know, it is strange.

It is odd not hearing from you about an anime which I have actually watched. Thanks for introducing me to Sword Art Online and Aquarion Evol. I apreciate it.

Mirai Nikki was a show from last year, and it was actually #1 on that Openings list. :)

It was one of her favorite openings from last year, and the new opening wasn't eligible for this year's list, since it technically started last year

Kind of bummed that Eureka Seven AO wasn't on here, but it's your list so do what you want... Besides Lagrange was there so I'm happy. XP

Yeah kinda bummed by a lack of Bravblue on that list myself but then again, I'm currently going through a phase where I'd like to avoid being reminded of E7AO at the moment so maybe it's for the best.

First up its great to see you back JO, I'm sure we're all glad to see that you appear to be feeling better than in your last update.

There are some interesting picks on this list, in particular I found that many of the openings listed utilised colour very well, even if the songs or show premises did not really interest me (for the most part).

In particular I'd like to talk about the top three picks in a bit more detail:

3: I really liked the tone set by this opening and just how dark and different it was to the others on your list (in both a literal, palette and atmospheric sense). As a fan of the ????? series who didn't know about this till it appeared in your list, I'll be sure to check it out. The premise sounds interesting enough to a long time fan, though I can imagine some may be more interested in her "twin peaks".

2: When you outlined the criteria for this list I knew that this series would make an appearance on it, even to the point of being a leading contender for #1. I'm very familiar with the ???? series, having read all of the current manga and seen all of the episodes so far and have been loving the new Anime series. I'm not overly keen on the use of CG in the opening but thematically it does end up fitting the opening very well. I do think that a big part of this is aided by the song which is written especially for the series however.

1: Truth be told I have heard that this series from a couple of friends but until this point had not seen anything relating to this series myself, though seeing this opening and hearing your synopsis has increased my motivation to start watching it. As you said, the music used in this opening was great and is probably something I'd want to listen to more than once (which in a medium filled with so/so J-Pop is a breath of fresh air).

Speaking of the Space Bros opening, have you seen the music video for the full song? It's one of the coolest music videos I've ever seen, relying heavily on volumes of the Space Brothers manga itself for the visuals

I'm glad you had Jojo's Bizarre Adventure so high up. Not only is the theme song and opening just awesome, but it's my anime of the year (if not several years). Part 2 has begun, and we'll be getting a new OP next week. I hope it's as good, if not better.

This season has Shin Sekai Yori, which has no opening theme at all! It compensated by having the best ending theme of the year though (imo)

I didn't think the video of Another's opening didn't match the song, in fact I thought that they matched each other a little too well - whenever the song ground to a halt, so did the video. I was like "dude, just show us something already!" Agree 100% on Psycho-pass and Kids on the Slope though.

Oh, and when #20 started playing I thought "If I didn't know any better I could have sworn this was sung by Ritsuko Okazaki". Turns out I really didn't know any better!

I've been missing out on a whole lot of anime right now, and I got so many of them yet I have yet to watch the good majority of them. So far, I love Hyouka lot though, and I just watched the first few episodes of Sword Art Online.

kinda surprised jormungand wasnt in this - the 1st season not the 2nd. i always seemed to find myself watching it every time it came up.

JO, REALLYYYYY! Lagrange! did you listen to the lyrics of that song? they are awful, yes the animation is great but the lyrics are terrible. I was expecting Accel World to be on the list but whatever. And I have to say, I hate Tsuritama with all of my heart, but yeah the opening on its own its not bad

There are MANY popular songs that have poor, if not outright terrible, lyrical choices, but that isn't how people "listen" to songs unless they are some sort of linguistic analyst.
