Top 10 SNES RPGs
Written by Bennett The Sage Monday, 29 June 2009 01:02
Sage Edit: Though there is a *LOOSE* tie between Terranigma and Illusion of Gaia, Quintet, their developer, never officially stated they were a part of a series. Though they share common themes with Soul Blazer, they are thus not a part of a franchise.

06.28.2009 - 21:24 | FelcisNice list, but I miss Romancing SaGa 3, my personal SNES favorite. Yes it´s not as well known as some other RPGs and never got an official release in the west, but it´s an awesome game nonetheless and was way ahead of it´s time.
The same goes for Star Ocean and Tales of Phantasia: Great games, but never got released outside Japan, aside from fan translations.

You had a clip of Lufia 2 on there, which in my opinon, should have been 2 or 3 on the list. It was an epic RPG for its time, dealing with mystical beings, ultimate power, a killer 100 level dungeon (the last one is purposefully glitched!) plus...the main character and his wife die at the end in a way that actually made me cry way before Aerith on FF7. Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals is a way way way under appreciated RPG and it needs to be known. Its almost as under appreciated as Xenosaga

Well, I give you high marks for placing Earthbound so high up. However, I disagree with you ranking the laughably easy Evermore and Gaia on the list. I mean, Gaia actually gives you the answers to its puzzles in-game. Why bother playing at all if the game is going to tell you exactly what to do?
I'd rather see lesser known RPGs get some respect, like Brain Lord or Lufia II, especially since Lufia II was in your intro.
BTW, why is your portrait in the corner in the beginning? It looks like you're about to say "toasty"!

Mainly because I was speaking in a more personal tone. In my reviews, I rarely refer to myself in the first person. Here in my lists, where its all up to personal opinion, I can afford to be a bit more involved in what I am saying. Since I don't usually put myself on screen, I use a little icon of me whenever I speak so casually.

Yes, Lufia II would have been a welcome addition here, and I was surprised to see BOF over BOF2. But the hot debate between which was the superior of all RPGs between FFVI and CT was settled in a rather anti-climatic fashion here, no? I love FFIV, but for pure value, it is pretty audacious to include it over arguably the greatest RPG of all time. Nonetheless, Chrono Trigger is just as deserving. God, the mid 90's were great.
My only real beef with this list? I owned almost all of these games--including Secret of Evermore. And I am sorry, but that game really lacks the fun factor. There was no actual characterization, and the game's storyline made Super Mario Bros' seem complex. The music was non-existant, and the gameplay was just a rip of Secret of Mana (with fewer characters). The graphics were fair, but the colors felt bland at times. It was just a very mediocre game when lined up next to the others on the list. Most of my friends didn't care for it.
But great job, Sage! I agree with the AVGN, as well as many others, in that the 16-bit era was the golden era of gaming we've seen to date. The RPG's were no exception! Let's see a PSX list for RPG's now... Show me Xenogears!

I think "spiritual successor" is more appropriate then naming them outright sequels really. They all dealt with similar themes (at least SoulBlazer and Terranigma did, never played Gaia) but I remember hearing the argument before. Great list, Sage.. and FFMQ has some redeeming qualities...
Good list, except you broke your own rule early on. 'Terranigma' and 'Illusion of Gaia' are both parts of the Soul Blazer Trilogy; a set of 3 Enix produced SNES RPGs.
He's right Sage, they're part of a trilogy =p.

Great compilation of the top 10 SNES RPG. I think I played or tried all of them. Secret of Mana and Terranigma I'm sure I finished them. My only gripe, as FinalDragoon said, is that Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma are from the same "series". Well technically they are spiritual successors but the same team worked on Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma and somewhat on Granstream Saga and they all dealt with resurrecting the Earth. Not quite. Quintet, the developer of all three games, never referred to them as a series, they only shared common themes. Though Gamespy thinks otherwise. http:// hg101.classicgaming.games py.com/quintet/ quintet.htm
Basically it boils down to this:
System Shock : Bioshock :: Illusion of Gaia : Terranigma

Interesting list, though I've only played three of the games on the list (Earthbound, CT, and SMRPG, the last of which I never finished). It's almost sad in a way how predictable the top choice was, and while I haven't played it, I was so sure you'd have FF6 on the list if only because of everything I've heard about it.
But since you happened to include a game that wasn't released in the states, I'm curious if you've ever heard of, or even played LIVE-A-LIVE. If you have played it, what did you think? Or if you haven't, GO DO IT!

A lot of people love Chrono :s , but not me I have never play and maybe never will who knows. their are to many RPGs I want to get most of them are Shin Megami Tensei games. I guess because Chrono trigger has a battle system that doesn't intersected me at all. maybe because the time thing and the way it displayed

I was quite happy to see that FF II/IV was on the list as high as it was. It will always be my favorite RPG. Partially because it was the first RPG I ever played. Hell, it's one of the first games I ever played. I can safely say that FF II/IV is the reason why I love RPGs so much. I got hooked on the story and the gameplay, and I had to see it through to the end. At 5 years old, I beat that game, because the story was just that compelling to me.
I'm slightly biased towards that game, and I realize it, so I would have probably put it above Chrono Trigger on the list; but I can't deny Chrono Trigger was great. I'm one of the people that think Chrono Cross, which followed on the playstation, was also great. (Except the load times for battles. Not great.)
I have heard of, and played, every game on your list; and I cannot disagree with any of them. Nice job. :cheer:

06.28.2009 - 22:19 | Hermit KingThe "Spoony Bard" wasn't "bad translation", but censorship. And "spoony" was a perfectly acceptable insult for the situation:

I never much liked FFIV or Earthbound. Both had severe pacing issues that forced you to grind, but neither made grinding particularly fun (I still have nightmares about the magnetic cave in IV).
FFIV also suffers from what I like to call "SaGa Frontier 2 Syndrome", aka "I liked that guy, why can't I use him anymore?" Guest party members are one thing, but replacing most of the cast is too much.
Also, the list needs either no Action RPGs or Tales of Phantasia. Personally I think the line between SoM and Zelda 3 is too vague to put ARPGs on the list at all, but that's just me.

06.28.2009 - 22:25 | MetalNerdjust to be clear: Final Fantasy IV was "FF II" in the US, wasn't it?
I pretty much guessed the Top 2, though I would have expected FF VI (for it's superior storyline and music) oder FF V (for it's complex character system), but nice choice nonetheless.
And thanks for including Terranigma. Didn't know that it never came to the US. Usually the RPGs only didn't come to us in Europe... f.e. the Top 3 of the list. We had to import these games and play it on the adapter. F***ing expensive I tell ya.

I played only half of the games on your list, Mr. Sage, and I am ashamed of that. My problem is time. Like Lee says, "back in the days" I hadn't access to these games, and I only knew some of them in magazines. I played them in emulators, mostly.
But one thing I must agree: Chrono Trigger is the best! I played it one time in every three years, and always I see understand knew. It never ceases to amaze me. Probably the best RPG of its kind ever! The cut scenes made my jaw felt to the ground, and the I listen to the music often.
Romancing Saga looks great too, but the language barrier is terrible...
