i wasn't too sure of this game really, i mean i played the demo and it just sorta had the feeling of a ps2 game or something, but it has some pretty good humor =D

I think you were right when a few reviews ago you said your critiquing has gotten better. You've become objective, never just raving that "THIS GAME SUCKS!", rather, trying to see any good points that the game might have, and being generally unbiased.

    Eh.
Brutal Legend as a free flowing RTS isn't really my thing, but I do agree that it is well written and acted out.

    Mmmmmm...Psychonauts

yeah, Brutal Legend's awesome. you may have wanted to include the valid point that the storyline missions can be completed in about 6 hours, but considering they constitute less than half the single player game, i suppose it doesn't matter much (though i was a bit pissed when i beat the entire game in one sitting). also, so as to nitpick, you showed a legend when you said bondage dragon.

i may be wrong, but it sounds like this is overlord with a metal twist and a good story.

lol yeah, I think I'm gunna buy this game
I've only played the demo on the ps3, but it looks like a pretty awesome game that I would want to go back to even after I've finished it :)

An your right, Jack Black performance in this was just amazing! His enthusiasm really brings you into the story

Yeah, this game does look incredibly fascinating. I do know one person unimpressed by all this, though it's mostly a personal taste thing for him (he doesn't enjoy music and particularly stylized graphics). He compares it to a shooter fan who won't play Halo out of an irrational fear/hatred of rings.

Still, enjoyed this review. The RTS elements do look like a much more refined version of Overlord, which is good since I also enjoyed that game.

Though the game does have it flaws, mostly revolving around the RTS aspect and the less than exciting side missions, overall it's just an amazingly original game, that I was just blown by the story, characters, and setting.

I was actually starting to figure that the story might be a three parter after the battle with Lion Whyte, then moving on to Black Tears, and then Deviculous, I was surprised to see that it ended where it did.

They easily could've added more to the game, but they laid the foundation for an amazing world, that pulls me in more than most other games can. Hopefully there will be DLC or a sequel, since this game is ripe for continuation.

I'm so pissed that I spoiled the game's first major plot twist by playing multiplayer and selecting Drowning Doom as my faction.

(Don't do this before you defeat Lionwhyte. For the love of god, don't.)

I thought you were gonna trash the game seeing usually theere are no double sage reviews

  • DeathsHead419  - As said before

Thnks for 2 reviews in as many days, this time for a 360 game I'm really intersted in. As opposed to a PS3 game I desire (curse exclusivity, you will be the death of my wallet).
Though I hope you haven't set a precedent here, since it would be difficult (and expensive) to do reviews in suck quantity.

i'm going to rent this as soon as it is in blockbuster. I'm sorry i can't afford to buy it, but i was always bad at RTSs and i hear the single player story can be beaten in 10 hours. I really want it because it's metal, jack black, and tim schaffer. Anyone remember Day of the tentacle? big lols in that game

Great review Sage, but I do have one issue. When you were naming the voice actors, you left out what was one of the best parts, Tim Curry did the voice of Doviculus!

I have to completely disagree with you on this review. The action adventure plays both sluggishly, and like this has all been done before. The driving in the game is appalling especially after i have played a game like red faction guerilla that did it pretty well. With the rts part being its greatest strength gameplaywise, its not a good sign. Its what happens when you make a console rts. You just keep thinking how much easier it would be with a mouse and keyboard. The radio in the car was annoying as hell because you were never really in the car long enough to hear anything but the beginning. Also i have to disagree on making the celebrities likeable. Tell me you weren't completely annoyed by ozzy osbourne having something to say everytime you highlighted a new upgrade. Lita ford put in a very lackluster performance, along with whoever played lars.

Really its a mediocre game with a metal twist to it. Original but not great in any way.

The celebrities were great in this. I actually liked Ozzy in this game. Normally you can't understand a damn word from him, but it seems that once you put him in front of microphone, he can speak clear as day. I even liked his little bit as a bat for a side mission. Sure, they didn't need him saying something everytime you hovered over an item, but I never felt annoyed.

Even Lemmy was pretty understandable and I loved the setting they built around him as a bassist of healing who uses metal spider webs for bass strings lol.

Though I will agree that Lita wasn't all that great, I liked everyone else added into the game like Kyle Gass, Brian Posehn, Halford both times, and of course Tim Curry. Just love his voice and he even did voice work for the multiplayer. Don't like playing as the Tainted Coil, but it's pretty crazy when he talks about making children with the nuns and what not lol Also another noticeable voice addition, though not a celebrity, is pretty well known, that being the guitarist from Kabbage Boy and the headbanger Jack. It's the same guy who played as Invader Zim, Billy from Billy and Mandy, and Dagget from The Angry Beavers.

while halford and lemmy were brilliant along with jack black putting in a solid performance. I got tired of kyle gass because he said the same things over and over again for every single one of those cannon sidequests. Posehn seemed completely out of his usual role. An arrogant hunter?? Who thought of that character for him?

Great review Sage and a great kick ass game Brutal Legend is. It kind of reminds me of Giants Citizen Kabuto for it's RTS elements and funny story. Hope the game sells well so we can see more of Shaffer's outlandish creations.

Just a clarification, I don't want to be a douche but I have to say this :P

Rob Halford (Judas priest) plays the leader of the Fire barons, the bikers you encounter after beating up that glam rock twat :P So Rob Halford does not play aforementioned twat, but the Fire baron.

Otherwise, great review, they're always very informative and entertaining to watch as well :)

  • Bennett the Sage

In addition to playing the Fire Baron, Halford also played Lionwhyte.

  • Drach

He also plays Lyonwhite. They added the Fire Baron to bring Rob closer to his real life persona.

Rob Halford voices BOTH of these characters.

I usually agree with your views on games sage, but this is just flat out wrong.

That game is broken, it's just not finished and I can't believe other people are treating it as anything other than a half assed piece of work.

6 more months of development and it might of been fun, but as it stands its a fustrating and unfinished experience.

You're speaking of Richard Steven Horvitz. Who more importantly, voiced Raz in Psychonauts. That headbanger's goggles and voice are one of many subtle references to Psychonauts in the game.

Love the review, I wrote one myself earlier this week, but I think you would have done well to mention just how incredibly short the game actually is. : /

    Good review.
I love the game. I have completed the story.
Though I think it was a bit rushed, especially towards the end, I had a great time.

One thing I especially enjoy about the game is the world. I have a blast just driving around and collecting stuff.

Being a metalhead for more than 15 years, I can say that most of this game is enjoyable primarily because of the "World of Metal" The scenery is really entertaining and immersive, the voice acting by the metal gods is top notch, The graphics while a bit dated look quite good for a game that's been in development for such a long time.

If you love Heavy Metal, you should like this game.

there's over 100 tracks on the soundtrack, which would equal a $100 iTunes purchase. So I think it's well worth the $60, you get a shit ton of music, and a very entertaining game.

I beat it quickly, however I think I may play through again on Brutal.
