What was Sega thinking with this Werehog idea? Honestly.

Sega did once upon a time get Sonic right in 3D... it was the first time, with Sonic Adventure. And ever since, I have been waiting for that game's worthy successor. Sonic 2006 tried to be a successor, but was roundly defeated by bad programming, dumb gameplay ideas, and a story worthy of an Uwe Boll adaptation. I played it, and was left heartbroken.

But GameSpot is right to rate it above Unleashed.

From what little I can stand to play of Sonic Unleashed... this is the worst game yet. The werehog is the least of this game's concerns, for that portion is actully fully-roaming, fully-playable and at times enjoyable. No, the problem really lies in the daytime stages. They first problem stems from the unnecessary retooling of of the controls, with the homing attack needlessly reassigned to the X button. The second, is that cop-out known as the boost button, which lets you brainlessly speed through the vistas eliminating the need to have enemies and reducing every level to rote track memorization. Thirdly, with the addition of the sidestep feature and drifting, Sonic now controls like a vehicle, rather than the platforming mascot that his was born as. And lastly, there's the "lauded" return of 2D gameplay. These sections are the most scripted sequences of them all. This is what people are clamoring for more of? No! This isn't Sonic's roots at all. This plays like the worst of Sonic and the Secret Rings combined with the vert worst parts of Sonic Rush, with QTEs.

I agree on every point. I don't *love* the day stages, they're decent, but I'd rather play Sonic Heroes (Which I found to be pretty fun, despite it being the first Sonic game I've ever played.) over Unleashed.

I just thought that the automatic gameplay makes this whole game pointless. It's just like in Final Fantasy 12, were you have to use gambits to make the characters do what you want in battle, it's no fun, because the player basically is watching how they fight.

I'd even go as far as saying that the Werehog levels are much superior than the day time ones, just because they're more involving.

GREAT VIDEO!!!!!

I think Sega can make a great Sonic game if they FINALLY LEARN SOMETHING from Sonic Unleashed. That we ONLY WANT the DAY LEVELS YOU STUPID FUCKHEADS!!!

*ahem*

... I still have hope!

Erinaceus, your right abour SA but we must also give credit to SA2, which has been sparking debate for years over which one of these is better. It went south with Sonic heroes, then it tries to introduce weapons with Shadow, followed by the awfulness that is Sonic 06. Secret rings showed some promise, but the non linear levels and extra missions bought that game down.

As for Unleashed, I have to say to put it beloow Sonic 06 is wrong on every level. I ont see it as the rebirth of Sonic, I see it as the preview of the rebirth of Sonic. After the poor critical reviews, I am sure even Sonic team will take out the Werehog and the sun medals, perhaps give us back some Knuckles and Tails stages, and leave us with pure Sonic bliss. You do have to suffer, slightly, to experience this now, but he formula has been put into place now, all SEGA need to do is stick to it.

I've always likened the main series of 3D Sonic games to the Batman movies... strange metaphor, I know, but stick with me and I'll explain.

Sonic Adventure, like the 1989 Batman film was very much a product of its time, but thanks to the evolving and changing times has not been aging as well as its fans had hoped. And, like the '89 Batman film, it was praised by critics from a presentation standpoint. Batman was lauded for its set designs and Danny Elfman's groundbreaking music, while SA gained praise for it's next-gen graphics and Jun Senoue's soundtrack.

Sonic Adventure 2, like Batman Returns, gave the fans more of the streamlined action they were asking for, plus a little sympathy towards the villains. Again, the presentation was top-notch. And, like the second Batman film, fans and critics are to this day still arguing whether or not it is superior to its predecessor.

Sonic Heroes, like Batman Forever, took the franchise in some very new directions, skewed younger with its target demo, and the results were hugely mixed. It, like Forever, has its fans (I'm actually one of them), but on the whole, the masses would rather forget about it.

And that brings us to 2006. It's Batman & Robin. An idiotic self-parody of a story? Strike one. Sidekicks who detract from the hero and are doubly annoying? Strike two. Contains an plotpoingt universally reviled by every aspect of their respective fanbases ("Bat Credit Card" and "The Kiss")? Steeeeriiike three!

I had hopes that Unleashed would be a new start, but to me it's just more of the same with QTEs, and to boot it broke my metaphor. At least it has a commendable soundtrack.

Is there ever going to be a "Batman Begins" of the Sonic franchise? I sure hope so. But I'm going to have to agree with Lee here... it sure as hell won't come from either Sonic Team or Dimps. They have no clue anymore.

The game was conflicting at best. The daystages were fast past, exhiliatering and fun. On the other side of the coin, you have the slow, lumbering werehog stages that feel like a chore rather than a game. After being horribly decieved by Sega's spectauclar fuck up Sonic 06, I made it in my account not to be fooled by over budget, high production value trailers. So I held my registration till I actually played the game and honestly, it was good. Nothing special, nothing atrociously bad but it was decent. A 3D Sonic game that I actually enjoyed since Sonic Adventure 2. This couldve been the redeeming title to restore Sonic to his former glory, but ala Sonic Team had to implement a stupid gimmick just to milk the fuck outta the franchise. This company seriously doesnt care about thier mascot anymore cause the quality of the games have gradually diminished. This decade has been the absolute embarresment for Sonic. This applies to the cartoons and the Archie Comics. The quality is gone.

As for Sonic and the Black Knight, Im not ever going to bother. Its another installment from the storybook series meaning the game play and controls will probably be no different than its predecessor. As a Sonic fan that grew up on the Genesis games, I've been very disspointed how Sega has been treating Sonic. Hopefully by 2011, during the 20th anniversary Sega will finally acknowledge their decade of mistakes and rectify what they destroyed. I loved Sonic Unleshed due to the instrumental score, CGI designs, beautiful landscapes and the speed. Id say Sega eliminated the pointless werehog stages, this wouldve been a solid game to be proud of. Hopefully things will change in the next decade, but for now, Im cautious about my game purchases now.

I played Unleashed's demo and player the sunny day level that was in the video and honestly I didn't think it was so good, I can only imagine the night levels.. Sure when you were running at top speeds it was fun, but the framerate wasn't stable and when I hit something and slowed down the controls felt pretty bad. I guess this is improvement, though. The only other 3D Sonic I tried was Sonic Adventure Battle 2 so I don't know the horrors of the other 3D Sonic games.

Sonic the Hedgehog in a highlander video game would be epic. :)

You don't like Sonic Adventure 2 or Sonic Heroes?
• ppinillas
Seriously, anyone remember the gimmicks of the other "oh so great" sonic 3D games you talk about so much?(I will be flamed for saying this...) Only sonic stages were good and the other 2/3 of the game were terrible emerald hunting bullshit or boring-as-shit shooters (SA2 case) or fishing shitloads with a mentally retarded cat(SA case)that at least for me make the werehog look like an A+ idea. And for the other old sonic games i mean come on, could you put them where they belong in the past? They were good, yes but come on, its like if in every mario game that comes out i mentioned and compared it to SMB3.
Im not even a hard sonic fan that defends every single game (I think 2006 was utter crap and Shadow the Hedgehog was bad)but i can say that i have played all the games that i mentioned (including megadrive ones) and i put this game at one place below from...(braces itself for the flaming of the old-school fans) S3&K
• ppinillas
Oh i forgot to say i agree with the chip fu**ball being the most annoying creature ever (yes, even worse than Navi *heeeyyy, heeeyy)
• Destron D-69  - Is sonic Immortal though?
he's survived the loss of his own console, a string of ass games, and lack luster guest appearances ...

I'm beginning to wonder.
• TKWolfman
I really like Lee's style, it feels unique and fresh compared to other reviewers who just sit in front of a camera for 20 minutes. No offense to them, just saying it's nice to see another approach.

As for Sonic Unleashed, there's not much to say except this made-up slogan: "Sonic Unleashed. Because furries need to know how much Too Human sucks, too." XP

well the game actually looks entertaining to me. I love destruction so I'll like the werehog stages and the daylight stages look really cool too. I have the game, but havn't played it yet, but it definantly looks like it's: "Way past cool" as he used to say in the SatAM series.
• Falcovsleon20  - Ugh....where do I begin?
avatar
First of all, the Werehog is not that slow. I played the Wii Version and everytime he dashes, he moves like he's on a sugar rush. Granted the Wii version is technically very very different from the 360 version (and has even more Werehog levels) but still, I'm not seeing what you and other people are complaining about.

Second, do you really think Chip is annoying when there are much worse Sonic characters out there? Do I really need to bring up the likes of Silver the Hedgehog again? Or how about Big the Cat? Or Princess Elise? Chip is actually a welcome change of pace for once.

You probably think I hated this review. Well no, I'm just nitpicking and counter-arguing. I actually found this review pretty fun. I personally think Sonic Unleashed is actually the first decent Sonic game in a while but if you disagree then I won't hold it against you. Unlike some people. (coughX- PlaycoughIGNcough)
• Setnaro  - Day Time Gameplay.....
avatar
The daytime stages weren't even that good either. The boost completely removes the reason why you use the joystick to begin with. You can almost beat a stage with one hand on the buttons. That's just sad. The loops, the grinding, and the wall jumping all look visually appealing and exciting, but you don't have control over it, so what's the point? Some features, like drifting, I'll say were pretty good. Drifting at least had you focusing more on the controls to pull it off right, and then feeling satisfied when you successfully do it. The rest of the game's controls don't feel satisfying to pull off because the game does it for you most of the time.

The visual sense of speed is hiding too much problems for the game. Sonic is about speed, but that never included pushing a button to reach that speed. He's not a car. The speed in the classic days relied more on physics, such as rolling down a slope, like Chemical Plant Zone. And since there was no limit to how fast you could go, you could literally run off the screen. That was fun. Since the games of today rely on that boost button to go fast, the stages are more linear with hardly any roller coaster slopes needed to build speed. Look at Dragon Road in Unleashed. The very beginning has you running straight for a few seconds. Sure it looks awesome, but as I said, the game's doing it for you.

As for the Werehog, it could have been better, much better. I mean, it may not be Sonic style in anyway, and it's fine if SEGA attempts to add something new for players to enjoy, but if they can't get Sonic's main gameplay right, why bother?

I don't hate Sonic and I'm not some sort of 2D purist. It's just so frustrating when your favorite character plays out like nothing you played in the past. I admit I enjoyed Sonic Unleashed quite a lot, more so then Sonic Adventure and even most of the classic Genesis titles, but because the game had too much of these "automatic moments", I can't really compare this game to the other Sonic games that actually established what Sonic was really about. I have high hopes Sonic will be good again.

I've actually only yelled at 3 Sonic games

Sonic 3D Blast
Sonic And The Secret Rings
Sonic The Hedgehog 2006

i was fully entertained by the rest of them (that said, i've only played the platformers, No racing games or fighting games for me!)

I absolutely adore the daytime stages in Unleashed, and I've only played the Wii Version. That being said, the Wii version is disjointed, and if you think that 75% of the game is in the dark on the PS3/360 version, try playing it on the wii or PS2! 50% of the PS360 stages are daytime at least. 75% of the stages on the wii are in the dark. 3-1 in favor of WereSonic. That drags the game down, though the medals aren't for advancing in stages, but rather, unlocking extras. That said, I'm certain the PS360 version has a lot more play and replay value.

That also said, I wish the whole game were day.

Is it sad that this is basically the same reactions I give to every Sonic game. "OH shiny! Must buy despite the fact I KNOW it'll be stupid!" *head desk*. Nice review here, basically how I feel in general about Sonic as well. Chip makes me want to do very violent things...little bugger.

Lee: Oh cool, Sonic with a sword!!
Admiral Ackbar: IT'S A TRAP!!!!!!

I actually played Sonic and the Black Knight at New York Comic Con. The graphics seemed decent enough, just don't expect it to look better than Unleashed. It actually plays most like Unleashed, where your sometimes just running on a rail. You used the remote to swing your sword and block attacks, but it was the concept of the sword in the first place that annoyed me. Too many times I was just about to start hitting high speeds, when all of a sudden I had to stop dead in my tracks to to use the sword to whack an ememy or block wild animals running at you, AND YOU CANT JUMP OVER THEM. YOU HAVE TO BLOCK.

It just seems like another tacked on gimmick that the game forces you to use, whether you like it or not. Hopefully I just played an early version and not the finished product, otherwise don't have high expectations for this game.:(
• chaosbringer  - shadow the hedgehog
avatar
every one hates shadow the hedgehog while its much much better then sonic heroes
sure shadow uses guns but it didnt affect the gameplay too much
now lets see what sonic with a sword will do to the gaming world
• Closet80sfan  - Let me guess more Sonic Unleashed hate.
I can't understand why people constantly bitch over werehog stages in sonic Unleashed, they're not that bad. They consume more time and try to give you something else to do besides run around, plus what I've found is that they tend to be pretty easy, what? thier too hard for everyone? The daytime stages are awesome! And still can't believe people even bitch about those stages too. At least 700,000 people didn't and brought the game.

GS and IGN thier reviews were total bull$hit! After listening to IGN's review, I wanted to find Hillary Goldstien and beat the hell out of him. Trust me folks! His review is nonsense! The jackass even manages to die on purpose.

Everyone should go easy on Sonic Unleashed. It's far better the Sonic 2006 and whoever says it should be ranked lower has got a head up thier ass. Sega is trying to get it right, and they keep falling short, but once SEGA returns to the hardware market with Ringwide/Ringedge then Sonic will return to his glory days.
