Wow, I forgot how much blood Doom had. Makes me wonder if the goggles I'm viewing this through were already rose-tinted, or if that's a product of the gore...

Here is the story Lee.
John Stalvern waited. The lights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were demons in the base. He didn't see them, but had expected them now for years. His warnings to Cernel Joson were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway.
John was a space marine for fourteen years. When he was young he watched the spaceships and he said to dad "I want to be on the ships daddy."
Dad said "No! You will BE KILL BY DEMONS"
There was a time when he believed him. Then as he got oldered he stopped. But now in the space station base of the UAC he knew there were demons.
"This is Joson" the radio crackered. "You must fight the demons!"
So John gotted his palsma rifle and blew up the wall.
"HE GOING TO KILL US" said the demons
"I will shoot at him" said the cyberdemon and he fired the rocket missiles. John plasmaed at him and tried to blew him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill.
"No! I must kill the demons" he shouted
The radio said "No, John. You are the demons"
And then John was a zombie.

I was wondering how long it would take for that to be referenced.

Well, doom is the grandaddy of FPS games in a lot of ways. It also introduced the lone Space Marine, fighting against monsters in Space... Halo wouldn't exist without Doom!

I was about 6 years old when I first played Doom on my Dad's pc. And my god was I scared...But I played the hole damn thing through and a few years later it was Doom 2 ; )
great review Lee, looking for more.

06.11.2009 - 22:33 | Panzernakr - I know the story... sorta
You're a space marine sent to Mars because you kicked your commanding officer's ass, so you're there as punishment on what would be a very boring part of the planet, but suddenly all hell breaks loose and so Mars is invaded by demons from hell... yup, I guess Lucifer's sanctuary is located in space
-
06.11.2009 - 22:48 | Booze Zombie
Your version of the story sounded similar, but there's more "my boss was an asshole" and "they made me wait here for them and now they're all dead" in the real story.
Anyways, good video.

Holding down the left trigger lets you run in this version. Helps speed things up.
Edit: UAC: Union Aerospace Corperation.
The demons are on the moons of mars as a result of a teleporter expariment gone VERY wrong.

06.12.2009 - 05:24 | Lee is Still Gaming - Running
I took the scenic route. I didn't want to miss out on all the awesome surroundings.
...
...
Yeah I didn't know how to run. The NEXT playthrough, however, will have plenty of running. A game just got released on XBLA and I can't wait to Still Playing the living hell out of it.

06.11.2009 - 23:16 | Thaluikhain
Hmmm...some things I agree with in there, but then some parts where it seemed you felt you had to say something to keep it going, even when you didn't have anything to say.
Oh...about the music...not bad on the early levels, but the ep1 lvl8 "Sign of Evil" is made of win.

You missed the shotgun
ahh you mentioned that LOL
and I enjoyed the shotgun the best too

06.11.2009 - 23:32 | CrimsonDusk - Great review
Good memories with this game and to think it influenced so much the greatness that Duke Nukem 3D was. Doom 3 looks nothing like this from an atmosphere and body count POV. To think that Duke Nukem Forever never got out although it could of used any of the graphics engines and the gameplay mechanics of the FPS that got out since 1997. Oh and to bad you didn't use the updated graphics edition on the PC for you Doom review.

This video made me want to atleast try to finish Plutonia Experiment on UV... should I?
-
06.12.2009 - 00:07 | Kuari - Heh..
All I can say is, can't wait to see what you say about the Revanants.... those bastards are the ONLY ones that scared me to the point I sometimes just couldn't play anymore when I knew they were coming.
As for story, well, it simply is you're a space marine stationed on Mars, guarding experiments on teleportation. Instead they unleash hell, quite literally.

I really enjoyed watching this. I never made it past the first level =P Didn't have the patience and found the game somewhat confusing at the time =P

That was great. I have not played this game for years but I can still remember how great it was. It was truly scary but with lot of demons to kill.

06.12.2009 - 00:55 | DrKimble
Ugh .. Soundblaser. That keyword brought back a lot of bad memories. Damn was it a hassle to get games to work back in the days.
Ps. There's nothing wrong with yelling BOOM when you smoke a fool. Hell, I used to yell BOOM when strangling people in Splinter Cell .. which .. I know, doesn't make any sense because strangling is more of a UUMPH or ARGH then a BOOM. - What am I talking about?!
-
06.12.2009 - 01:16 | Lt.Havoc
Hmm, is that me or is the X-Box version really slow? I dunno, the Doom on the PC, at least the ZDoom port and whatnot seem rather fast compared to that.
-
06.12.2009 - 01:34 | Talden
Haha! Doom, that was good times. What scares me a litlle is to notice every secrets you've missed in those few levels, because I've played them so many times that I know them by heart... even ten years later!
By the way, I didn't like the machine gun at first too. But you have to know that it's really useful against certains foes. You see, everytime you shot someone, there is a chance that they stop what they're doing (including shooting) for a second. The machine gun, having a great fire rate, have more chances to pin them down that way. It's really efficient againts a few monsters, like the pink "cuddly teddy bear", who is completely unable to bite you if you use that gun.
Just my two cents.

See ya!

Well, the original story of Doom is actually very simple: The United Areospace coperation (UAC for short), the all powerful compnay, builds a lab on Mars where they expretiment on interdimansional doors. Ar one of these expretiments, they accidently open a door to hell and one the moon Phobos gets teleported to hell while all kind of heelish creatures invade the mars base.
The people there get truned into Zombies and whatnot. You are part of the UAC Marines and are the only surivor of the whole thing and its up to you to stop the invasion from hell.

Interesting to see what Doom is like for a newbie. I'd forgotten what it was like to suck.
I'm kidding. It's not like keeping in form by playing Doom continuously for the last 15 years is anything to brag about.

Actually what I wanted to say was check out http://www.newdoom.com/ if you want to play the game with a more modern engine.

Good review.
I am a doom addict and used to create Doom levels. The bug you were talking about where you see a "tear" in the levels is part of the doom programming. It's not an xbox issue, basicly its caused by a sector not being closed. When you make a Doom level every object, walls ect are sectors. If one isn't created right you get that tear effect, but sometimes even when the sectors are right the can sorta conflict and it does it anyway...you usally only see it for a second or two.-TMK

"Sticky situation...... writings on the walls!"
I am pretty damn sure I butchered that song...
Doom was such a fun game!
Thanks you Lee for your wonderful video!

I remember that my mom used to be afraid that by playing this game, when I was a kid, I would turn into a psychopath, murder, rapist, pedophile or somethin'. Well - look at me now - I'm totally normal.
...by the way - does anyone of you know any 12 year olds wanting to go on a date? Just asking.
HA HA!

06.12.2009 - 04:19 | BlueGoldBizarros
I don't care what the original story is, your story is KICK-ASS, Lee!

Unfortunatly, I never played Doom... ever. My mom was VERY strict at what games I played; SO Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat, and Doom were clearly never going to be in our home.

Can't wait for the next episode, Lee!
