WOW I never heard of Jim Varney and I'm really sad I didn't because he looked and acted like a really cool and funny guy. Lee could you recommend what was his greatest Ernest P. Worrell appearance because I want to see his work and maybe start with his best or I'll just go chronologically. Still thank you for presenting this great man.

07.28.2009 - 02:57 | Lee is Still Gaming Chronologically is the way to go, though my favorite is Ernest Scared Stupid.
There are also a few VHS tapes that collect a lot of his commercials, as well as some TV specials. Some had to be recorded off of TV, like Ernest Goes to Splash Mountain (which is thankfully available on YouTube). The commercials are like a bonus movie. The guy did commercials for over 100 U.S. cities.
The last four movies were direct-to-VHS and weren't all that good, even for an Ernest movie. I'd watch those last. I've still yet to sit through Ernest Goes to Africa and Ernest in the Army, but I'll give them a shot someday.
Let's say that this will be the last time Still Gaming covers Jim Varney, but not Lee's last time.

07.27.2009 - 23:15 | RanCossackNicely done, I remember watching almost every movie that he was the star of back in the day, when I was little.. I'm pretty sure I've got them all on VHS's somewhere around my living room.
This review makes ya wanna watch some good old Ernest movies, simply to enjoy the classic madness that only he could bring to the screen... Know what ah mean, Vern?

I grew up on Ernest. The man taught me some serious lessons like 'Rubber + Live Wires = Good!' and 'Troll + Milk = Diarrhea and Brussels Sprouts'. This doesn't seem like anything he'd do, but then again actors have committed bigger atrocities
(insert good actor in bad movie here)
A little short for my taste but your charisma makes me wanna watch it again. Good shot, Lee.

And this movie has the second worst ending of a "kids movie" I've seen, the worst being Time Bandits. The "hero" has the option of pressing two buttons, one labeled Right and one Wrong. He can't decide, and the ghostly image of his parents appear to help him choose between right and wrong. You don't really see which one he chooses, but it turns out to be the wrong one and "all the money goes bad".
It's odd to think that Jim Varney is a classically trained Shakespearian(sic) actor, when his most notable role was a somewhat idiotic redneck. And who's doing the voice of the slinky dog in Toy Story 3, now that he's dead? According to the YouTube comments, it's my mom...

07.28.2009 - 09:36 | GozarWasted 3:26 seconds of my life. What was the point of this?
Ernest was a b-grade entertainer for children. A b-grade entertainer making a b-grade movie what do you expect? That's how all of Ernest movies where.
I was always a Pee-Wee fan. Never really watched Ernest's morning show too much.

07.28.2009 - 09:48 | NiteShiftGrowing up in the 80s there were a ton of Ernest movies. Ernest Goes to Camp was definitely my favorite growing up. Ernest Scared Stupid would be next, then Ernest Goes to Jail, then Ernest Saves Christmas.
