Another great video. They need to do a direct sequel to SH 2. :)

I feel that whould not be a good idea and well I may not be as hard core as Dinah is with Silent Hill but I know if they made a direct sequel to Resdent Evil it whouldn't work. Each game contrbutes to the story of unbrella not the main chareters. you can argue till your face is blue that 2 and 4 and half that is right half of 1 is to 5 like many jerk off do but it is not true. Each game is usealy stand alone referenceing the games at most but not haveing a full conection with what is happening with the protaganist weather it Leon S Kenady (Kenady may be spelled wrong but he is basicly the James of RE so you have to use the full name)or Crist Redfeild they are not direct sequels. ohh and before you say what about side games like outbreak...I honestly think there stand alones and shouldn't be counted in the becase lets face the half the games where to bring back Nemasis or to make the main cast seem more badass.

see my point...sorry for ranting ...it happens.

They really shouldn't. Silent Hill 2 ended, and James' story is finished. A sequel would be nothing but an absolute disappointment. Don't kill a good thing by trying to add extraneous crap to it.

Agreed. Silent Hill 4 is about as close as they could (and should) ever come to a sequel.

    Great video, as always!

As I've stated before, 0rigins felt simultaneously unpolished and, to some extent, unfinished. In fact, my friends and I dub it Silent Hill: Lite. To me, storyline could've been developed to great extents, especially on the town itself; otherwise, it would seem pointless to develop a prequel if the story didn't expand upon its setting. However, SH0 centered its story a bit too much on Travis and, in the process, shortchanges the story behind the town. He's a decent character, but not nearly as interesting as Heather, James, or Harry. And, to be honest, the scenes involving Lisa Garland seemed pointless; I was really hoping to get more out of her, aside from blonde eyecandy ;) Ultimately, SH0 wasn't a bad game, but just not quite the Silent Hill game fans should expect it to be.

You just made me realize why 0rigins and Homecoming seem weak to me--they don't contribute anything new about the town itself.

Silent Hill 2 went into the town's history--executions, deaths in Toluca Lake, etc.

Silent Hill 3 went more into the history of the cult.

Silent Hill 4 went into a different sect of the cult and the orphanage they ran.

As I recall, SH0 and SHH didn't add anything, and SHH even went as far as have references to the cult in the movie, making it even more pointless in that regard.
  • mousesquisher
I totally agree that SH0 doesn't do anything to add to the past history of the town, but if you notice, it does add to the present/continuing history of the town. As the game advances, the Otherworld (to use Harry's term) progresses in power and intensity--at the start of the game, the Otherworld pretty much only discolours the world and adds the monsters but by the end of the game, Alessa has the power to physically alter the world itself (as opposed to just buildings). As you play, if you pay attention, the Otherworld gets a little more severe at each location.

And Travis himself could be a hint at the truth behind Vincent's "You see them as monsters?" Note that The Butcher is only seen in the foggy world, never in the Otherworld. In the theater, you also find a note talking about The Butcher having been seen in the real world. Couple this fact with his Mom telling him about 'people in the mirror' and being able to travel through the mirrors and stuff, seemingly even while incarcerated in the mental ward. Being a kid when she told him did he believe her? When Travis touches the mirrors, is he really traveling to the Otherworld, or is the Otherworld (and The Butcher) actually in his head. When touching the mirror, does he switch personalities? We know from the CB conversation at the beginning of the game that other people know Travis is messed in the head anyways.

No, SH0 isn't even close to SH2, but maybe it's not the void people make it out to be.

As far as SHH goes: BOOOOOO!!!! :pinch: Ef in the ass with a mace for trying to canonize the movie. However, it does add to the history of the cult, even if most of that history is about a former sect. But mostly: BOOOOOOO!!!! >:(

Watched your video for SH1, loved it, but too short :P You should do a 5 parter with a comparison of SH1 & SHSM

Claudia was one of my most hated characters in Silent Hill 3, I was really rooting when Heather vowed revenge, vengeance is sweet.

  • MnemonicTube
I kind of pity Claudia. To me, she's more of an extremist rather than something truly malevolent. Vincent nailed it on the head when he exclaimed something to the lines of, "you're just a child crying out for love."
  • Cyborcat
    avatar
Hopefully Part 4 will make you think twice about that somewhat.
  • Phelous

What? Claudia, she's oh so nice and I'm glad...
Actually I always had a hard time not shooting her when the game gives you the opportunity despite it doing nothing good for you.
Miserable thing sucker killing Harry. Oh well at least that's not what REALLY happened huh?

  • TheThreadWeaver
If you asked me (which you didn't, but this is the internet so I'm going to say it anyways), I think this and the first two are the best silent hill games. They have the best story and characters, and the third part gives closure to the first part. Of course, feel free to tell me otherwise.
  • MnemonicTube
Ironic as this may sound, I could never get into SH2. While I certainly respect it in terms of story, I just couldn't sit down to play it through. While the storyline is gripping, I didn't derive the same enjoyment out of it as I did with the others.
  • SpotTheShingo
Can't wait till 4 and 5 are up, possibly around Halloween?

I really don't think that would work. When you think about it, the first game kinda had a sequel set-up at the end, or at least that one particular end.

In Silent Hill 2, pretty much all the endings provide a sense of closure one way or another-although I suppose that one ending you can get during the second play through does feel a bit like a cliff-hanger. Still, it'd kinda "ruin" things by pretty much saying that it's the "true" ending.

With the original Silent Hill, there's pretty much no arguing which ending is the "best" one, they don't call it "Good +" for nothing.
  • Mobius
Worked a full 12-hour night shift without any rest and got home to THIS! Who needs sleep!? ;)

The more I played SH 3, the more I was attracted to Heather/Cheryl's sass and spunk. For a guy hardcore gamer, it really was a breath of fresh air.

Just checked out the trailer for Shattered Memories (yes, I'm slow). When did Dahlia become a $20 hooker!? Didn't mind Harry's new mousy look, though. It fits the gameplay (run the hell away) perfectly well.

I loved this game. I remember that my only real gripe about it was that the characters kinda looked weird when they talked because they have no visible teeth. They have these black holes for mouths and its kinda freaky.

But that is a really minor gripe from a really good game.

    Great job Dena.

Heather Morris is credited on IMDBpro for the voicework on SH4. Either her, her reps (although none are listed, so she may be freelance) or those involved with the game could add that credit as well as have it confirmed with the IMDB people when they check their sources, so I think it's safe to say she probably did it.

If I had my studio system log in with me, I'd surely double and triple check for you. Highly looking forward to the next installment, and darn you for making me feel bad for not playing enough of Silent Hill 3 to realize it was even tied in with the first. I didn't even get out of the mall when I played...although I still have my copy...it's going to be a long night, me thinks.

Whereas in Silent Hill: Homecoming, the characters have too much visible, uh, teeth. And it's REALLY freaky. :0

Great review as always, Dena, can't wait for the next two installments! :)

I don't remember the manual mentioning voice actors, but I'll check again when I get home.

But I could have sworn I looked for it in there (since it's not in the game's credits) and didn't find it.

Interesting thing, in the game of tarot (Where the cards originally came from, also where we get trumps), the Fool is usually the best card in the game. Either because it's a throw-away card to keep your better cards with, or because it trumps all other cards.

    Nice review, Dena.
I love Douglas. He has to be one of my favorite supporting characters in the SH series. From the beginning of the game, he seems like a serious detective. But as the game progresses, you really get to see a softer side to him. Plus, some of the exchanges between him and Heather are comedy gold in my opinion.
  • Reaver
Im getting the game next week, my friend was lazy to send it... aww another vid that I can't watch... :(

Ohh well, i'll just have to wait.
  • Richard Wesker
I really enjoyed your insertion of Silent Hill 1 footage into Heather's explanation of her past to Douglas. I think it would have been interesting if the actual game had done that. I agree that I'm not against how Silent Hill 3 was more straightforward than the previous games, story-wise. It kept the feel of the series, so I was happy. I'm a huge Silent Hill fan, so I'm really enjoying these videos.

Just checked my SH4 manual, but there's no mention of any voice-actors.
It's the same credits as the ending credits of the game:

Case in point IMDB lists Scott McCulloch as Chris in RE1 and then, Dracula in Symphony of the Night. You listen to that game and tell me it's not "Chris" as Richter Belmont. Who funny enough IMDB credits Michael Gough, voice of Harry Mason, as doing.
  • Cyborcat
    avatar
They also credit ... err, forget the actor's name, but Vincent in SH3 as also doing Jasper Gein in SH4. If you listen to the voices, it's clearly Richard Braintree he does and not Jasper.

They're really only dependable when it comes to games and movies that have the names in the credits--with more obscure stuff, they're very hit and miss.

Basically, it's like Wikepedia where anybody can add info.

I never played Silent Hill 3; of course, I'm not much of a Silent Hill player. The story seems interesting enough, but its the excellent and creepy atmosphere that sells these games. I bet you could put Freddy Krueger in SH 6 and it'd sell a bajillion copies ... well, maybe not.
  • SillyRabbit

Thanks so much for these Silent Hill reviews Dena, I hope you continue to make them for Silent Hill 4 and possibly the first game as well. My friend and I absolutely love these games, since the first Silent Hill came out, and this reminds me so much of our discussions of the game while we played. Of course, your reviews are much more thorough, better detailed, and the humor and trivia makes the videos so much fun to watch. Hopefully Konami hasn't been flooded with emails yet, but I wrote the company asking if there is an official voice acting list that they can provide. Who knows if they will reply, but I'll copy/paste/forward/fax/ telegram their response if they do answer.

I want to play this game again, but I'm too scared :/ My favorite Silent Hill memory is playing the game with my friend, at 1 a.m., with the lights off and going through the Haunted House in 3. We were so scared during the second to last and last part of the house that we were throwing the controller back and forth at each other because we were too scared to be the one to continue forward. I've tried playing this game with others but they usually laugh at me for being so frightened, and that just takes away from the atmosphere of the game.
