i remember golden axe as a kid in the arcade... good times

and i wanna be your woman -_-
  • Johndawson999
You too? What is it about this woman that is so damn attractive. It's a subtle but unmistakable power.
  • TheOtherGeorgeW
I'm slightly disturbed by the fact that "TastyTrevor" wants to be Lee's woman...

I'm sure it's a great video, but the damn thing won't load. Is the site having issues, or is my comp just crap?

Edit: after 16 refreshes got it to work.

The genre of Boris Valljelos iconic paintings, Conan, Red Sonja and Golden Axe is called sword and sorcery and its a sub genre of fantasy. Great review, I just recently bought the sega collection for the playstation 3 just so I could get this game. I and my brother used to play the hell out of the amiga version of golden axe and we got really good at it. Again awesome review of segas original best seller.

saw this on youtube first, but it is still good even on a second viewing! yay you!! :cheer:

That was a great review of a great game. It makes me proud to have ran a country that allowed this greatness to be appreciate in the Arcades of America. I had this game on genesis as a Little Lincoln myself. I enjoyed many hours on this game, but was too giddy to use magic, thus, never having it when I needed it, and never finishing the game. That made me a Sad Lincoln. Either way, this review was great and remember, Abe Loves U!

i think golden axe is one of my most favorite games of the genesis age, impossible to solo

The genesis version was one of the very first games I ever owned. I sucked so bad at it, but it was understandable considering I was around six at the time.
  • Johndawson999  - Great Video
I liked this video allot. First of all I love golden ax. Two other things, the still photo's instead of video are a nice touch which I hope you keep, and secondly I find you incredibly sexy. Needles to say I'll be tuning in faithfully from now on.

Oh man, nostalgia. Golden Axe was probably my favorite game for the Sega. I remember my whole family got involved with the game since the graphics were really cool to watch at the time. This was when sega was brand new. It was strange considering my folks are definately not into video games and never have been. Good times. And yeah, the sound track was awesome. I also remember being baffled a bit by the box art as well, mostly because I didnt understand why the barbarian had an axe.

:0 Did I miss a meeting where IBC is mentioned as "In Before Coldguy" is considered a legitimate comment to a video?

I really like Golden Axe, its such a amazing game but when I got my genesis, my first game was Golden Axe II which I prefer over the first game (Death Adder ain't got nothing on Dark Guld) but I honestly had no idea that the arcade version was different, I'll definitely have to take a look.

Great review, it was fun, entertaining and informative, thanks. ^^

A great classic both Genesis and Arcade, I remember doing the run and kick, it wasn't cheap to me it was more strategic due to the fact that the pink knights would always knock me off the dragon and of course Death Adder...I mean bringer, took me 10 or more tries to beat that game...and then came the sequels, good times. I wonder if Xbox live will bring Golden Axe II the revenge of Death Adder (The arcade Golden Axe II) to us.

When my mom got me a genesis for my 6th birthday, the box said $129.99. That was a model one genesis in 1991, did my mom get a really good sale or did the price really drop that fast?

Also, awesome use of the Benny Hill music.

    Battle bikini FTW!

great review, dena, of one of my favorite games. I must have finished this one more than a hundred times! (equal to altered beast and strider on the megadrive)
You were wonderingwhy the megadrive version was the one that was ported even on more powerful system, I think I may have an answer. I believe it's because the arcade version was not as playable than the home port.
After all the goal for the arcade version is to kill you so that you put more money in the machine, for the home port it's to have reasonnable difficulty so that you can master the game after a while.
another reason is that the machine may be still exploited in some places, and the only way to play the "real" version is to insert coins ! I will definitely put some money in a machine if I see one...
Really good review, keep the good work, I can't wait for your next video !
ps: sorry for the "poor litteracy" I'm french (we are all like benzaie in this country ;) )

I loved GA too. I don't like the still photo approach. I thought I was having a problem with lag.
  • Enkil
This makes me wish my genesis still worked. Golden Axe was one of my favorite games of all time. I, luckily, got to play both versions of the game. I beat the genesis version first, but still felt kind of ripped off after having played (and beaten) the arcade version. The arcade story was so much better, and, strangely enough, had a movie-like atmosphere to it despite the 2Dness of it.

Haha, for a second, I thought this was going to be about Goldeneye. My bad.

    Biki + boots = armor.

I know that jump-in-graphics feeling. I went from Playstation 1 polygons to Dungeon Siege 1 (my first 3D nonpolygon game).

Just some things going thru my head whilst watchin' this here review:

Peasant gettin' a beatdown: "Have you ever seen such cruelty? Ooch! Oww!"

Dena using spam-kick: "Boot to the Head!"

Inaccurate box art: "It's Malibu from American Gladiators!"

(But as TVTropes would say, OurDwarfsAreAllTheSame!)

Oh wow. I remember how much time I wasted on that game growing up. No one I knew ever wanted to play the dwarf but I ended up playing the game as all 3 characters several times over before I moved on to other games...

That kick (shoulder charge for the males) is such a cheap move. I used it all the time too :D

girl after my own heart, you said exactly what I would have about the game, one of my all time favourites (I was more partial to the pink and yellow parrot lizard thing than the dragons, just cause of how they look)

when I got my Wii, I made sure this was my first Virtual Console download
  • DerManiac
I like the review, but let me complain about the presentation a little bit:
Well first of all: Moving images are sooo much more entertaining to watch than the slideshow of still images with a voiceover. It's supposed to be a _video_, isn't it?
Second: Why the heck are you in front of your PC? You are reviewing a Genesis game. The video should either show you in front of the Genesis (while the game is on the screen) or you without any PC/Console. I know for the most part you were playing the arcade, but then show that on your computer screen. You should at least pretend to play the game you are talking about, if you show that much footage of it.
Third: Ohhhh the reference to Captain S just didn't feel right. It was forced and and took waaay too long until you finally showed a picture of him (and finally not made it look like a rip-off).
Last: I loved the ending, with the benny hill theme playing.. but.. beeing on this site it looked like it was a joke stolen right from the Nostalgia Critic..

I appreciate constructive criticism, so don't think I'm being defensive or anything, but most of your complaints aren't valid, IMO.

    1. This show is a spin-off of Still Gaming, hence the still images. Then again, you may not like it on SG either, which is your prerogative, but I'm just pointing out the reason for it. I'm considering not doing it in later episodes, tho, but I'm currently on the fence about it.

    2. I play games mostly on my monitor so I can capture the footage, so what you are seeing IS my "gaming area" most of the time. In most episodes, the console is sitting on the desk--in this case, I used emulators to capture the footage. Frankly, I think "faking it" would be a bit silly, as I'm only TALKING about the game, and not playing it onscreen--the clips are mostly to illustrate whatever points I'm making (aside from the occasional gag, like "Taste my blade, bitch!" ).

Also, I think you missed the fact that this was my first episode, done about 18 months ago--criticism on it is a bit pointless since I've done 3.5 episodes since then, and a lot of things people might complain about have already been corrected in newer episodes. It's almost like looking at a drawing that an artist did as a child and telling them that it sucks because it looks like a child drew it =P

That said, I actually agree on the Captain S bit--it makes me cringe a little when I look at it now--but obviously I know better how to handle things like that now.

As for the Nostalgia Critic thing ... he was probably still on YouTube when I made this video--I don't think I'd even heard of him back then.
  • DerManiac
Thanks for the response to my gripes!
I did not realize that the video is from 2008! I just saw that it was advertised in the "news" slideshow thingy, and thought it as a brand new show. So, yeah I agree that this pretty much invalidates my last complain.
Also I never heard of Still Gaming. I don't like the style, but at least you explained why it is like that. I am glad to hear that you don't want to do this in later episodes any more. :)

The Captain S thing: Good to hear I'm not alone with that feeling ;)

So, but I still cling to my 2. complain. I would recommend to at least show something on the screen to give it a little touch of the game you are reviewing. Like the emulator running the game with the title screen showing. You know, it just feels like there is the focus on your screen, but... there's nothing on it!

    Nice!
I played it on the Genesis back then... i didnt have a chance to play the arcade version. :(

    Anyway, nice, i enjoyed it.

Golden Axe was my favorite game on the Mega Drive (Genesis).

I think the PAL/Euro region got the Arcade version on Mega Drive(Genesis) because I don't remember the colour pallet being as bad as was shown on the US Genesis version in this video.

I play it all the time on Xbox Live Arcade as well as Golden Axe 2 and Golden Axe 3 on the Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection CD for Xbox 360.

Is it possible to get nostalgic over a video game review? One of the best reviews ever on the web Dena.

Why does internet time feel like ten-times the speed of regular time? I feel like I first saw this when I was in high school but it was just last year lol. Does that mean in internet years I'm like 75?
