What JW was saying "...if you also get the guy in the umbrella, in this case, Peach..." is referring to the fact that on REGULAR Hanafuda cards, that card would normally feature a guy holding an umbrella.
Since the cards are Mario themed, they just replaced him with Peach, just as the Moon was replaced with a Big Boo, and the "Boar" is Wario.
Long story short: He knows.

10.09.2009 - 08:32 | EternalNightmareAssuming Paragoomba = Butterfly, then Wario and Donkey Kong = Boar and Deer? How does that work?

10.09.2009 - 11:52 | ReamerYou know, on a site where the majority of the talent are known for mocking bad movies, games, or comics, it is overly refreshing to see somebody do positive reviews. You make me wish I had a Famicon. I'm assuming that's what you are playing these games on, correct? Also, is it easy to acquire in the states and are they easy to set up?

10.09.2009 - 15:36 | SpotweldAs a fan of card games I'm really enjoying this last video.
One note that might be of use. The method of shuffling where you put all the cards together and muddle them together is generally called a "Wash" in casino parlance (http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/ Shuffling#Corgi.2C_Chemmy _or_Wash_shuffle)
Since poker is such a popular game these days it's probably more commonly known.
Also, (and probably randomly) ice wall hangings. SCAndians?

Thank you for alerting me to this game JewWario-San. I have a club nintendo account and a stack of registration cards that have been collecting dust for God-Knows-How-Long. I registered literally everything I had and took every survey in order to get the Hanafuda deck. It came in the mail just a couple days ago and I'm quite pleased.
They are beautiful and now that I see them up close and have a written version of the rules close at hand, I can see that it isn't really all that difficult. I look forward to playing it as soon as my parents aren't sick since they're likely to be my only on-hand players lol.
This game satiates my love of Japanese games and Nintendo. I also do like card games, so I have something else for a rainy day. ^_^

Hanafuda is amazing... my grandpa and I pretty much played this every day when I went to Japan.
Although I must say the way I learned is VERY different from the way you've explained... then again there are tons of ways to play Hanafuda out there.
I've been saving up my coins for those Nintendo Hanafuda cards too... I'm at around 550 coins so hopefully they don't disappear.

But I could say that every time.
I've always wondered how Hanafuda is played, and now that I see that it's both simple and compelling, I'm going to check it out, starting with getting Club house Games. I'd have ignored that game, but I didn't realize it had HANAFUDA. Well... Koi-Koi, which is allegedly the Korean version, or so I read just now. I have no idea, but it could be a variant. And speaking of which...
Please forgive me if it sounds like I'm nagging you, but I would like to point out (to your viewers) that the rules you describe are only one way to play the game. This is game with a hundred year history, one quite a bit more complex and convoluted than you imply. Your outline touches on the key issues, though, and that's what's important. (The complete history of Hanafuda didn't really have a place in this video, my god is it a long story!) Anyway, in a hundred years, a lot of variants are going to crop up. Fortunately, this being the internet age, one can very easily look up more rules, and yours seem to be good for starting people off.
Again, fantastic video, and I await Part 2 eagerly! I honestly think you're one of the best shows hosted here.

Always heard that Nintendo started out with card games, just never knew which ones.
This review was an insight to the past of a corporation we all know and love, some history of Japan and its culture and a classic game that many of us "westerners" may not have had the chance to enjoy.
Great video JewWario-san!
Oh, and can you teach me how to punch people through the internet? ...please.

I actually knew that was where nintendo got it's start, thanks to my subscription to nintendo power for so many years. They happened to mention it in one issue, and I just never forgot it. Seems unreal to think about it, but hey, who's complaining?
I always love these vids; although I must admit this game would take a lot of practice to get used to.
