More Monkey Island is not a bad thing at all, especially since TellTale's been doing such a great job with it.
I've also been impressed with their efforts to support the Wii as a Point and Click adventure platform, and it'd be even cooler if we saw more classics find their way on there in some way. I dunno why, but playing The Dig or Maniac Mansion on the Wii Just seems like a fun idea. :)

07.13.2009 - 22:08 | baba44713I played it. It's rather good. Sure it's not Ron's work anymore, but that ship has already sailed long ago, so to speak. And they at least consulted Ron a tiny bit which doesn't hurt.
Still, I really miss the dark undertones and surrealism of MI1 and especially MI2. And it's so sad we will never get a chance to learn the REAL secret of Monkey Island since the series is now permanently cemented in wacky Saturday-morning-cartoon land and the twist ending of MI2 was completely ruined by MI3's cheap copout intro.
But from MI4 things can only improve. Wait, what am I saying? Silly me, completely forgot that MI4 never happened...

I have beaten episode 1 and it was great.
A shame that Earl Boen (LeChuck) doesn't reprise his role, while he does reprises it in the Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition.
I was kinda hoping that they would re-introduce the "Mega Monkey Mode", but alas.
I hope GameHeroes will review The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition too. The game will apparently be released tomorrow.

07.13.2009 - 23:51 | trici bought this game too and while i did enjoy it, part of me still yearns for a classic style version of monkey island again. i supose that would be too time consuming now though and would only apeal to the niche like myself. still its nice to see monkey island obviously in the right hands this time round after the awful 4th game (which i couldnt even bring myself to play more than 5 minutes). i still have hopes that gilbert will return and finally reveal the true secret of monkey island (its people). i know hes suposedly moved on from monkey island but really, from what i can tell the guy hasnt really done that much at all since MI. and hell, since brutal force is pretty much done now, lets get gilbert grossman and schafer all together for MI6: the pox strikes back :p

I think they will release the episodes separately after a while. Apparently that's what they did with Wallace & Gromit. Start out by selling the complete series for a few weeks before allowing individual episode downloads.
I played the episode and loved it, but I feel that there are a couple more negative aspects that should be mentioned.
The small town that the game takes place in feels really, really dead. Not only can you not enter a single building as you please (and only one of them even has the interior modelled), but all the characters you meet just stand around doing absolutely nothing.
You spend a large portion of the game navigating a jungle labyrinth, and if you are like me and dislike labyrinths in games, that's not a very good thing.
Also, the 3D graphics look good enough, but I can't shake the feeling that the backgrounds lose a lot of detail due to them.
Other than that: awesome game and I can't wait for the next part.

.. since the MI1 and especially MI2 strongly hinted that the entire Carribbean setting is just a theme park. Guybrush may or may not really be that small kid from the ending of MI2. Anachronistic elements were not (only) there for joke value, they often seemed to be placed on purpose so we can see the real word seeping in Guybrush's "pirate" fantasy. The "Grog machine", the "under construction" part of town, the circus in the middle of the forest, buried treasure turning out to be a stupid T-shirt, the machinery behind the waterfall, and of course the entire "behind the scenes" MI2 finale... all pointing out that what we played is just a facade. Weird, surreal and altogether pretty cool.
I REALLY miss those elements in the later installments. And I really wish if Ron Gilbert had said that MI2 told the complete story, so we can be sure that the "kid lost in a pirate-themed park" IS in fact the solution and we can then enjoy MI3 and this latest one (MI4 not having happened of course) as stand-alone games. But since he has stated plenty of times that he really did plan out further progression of the story from where MI2 ended, I am really curious what that might have been (and wouldn't be surprised if it threw the entire concept of the series on its head completely).

Monkey Island is awesome, i played the first episode and it was great as ever.
Don't make the mistake to think that the end of mi2 is real. It's all just a trick from LeChuck to get rid of Guybrush, that's why we revisit the park in mi3 where guybrush turns to a kid again.
don't hate mi4 just because it was 3d, it's a great game with great gags, great overall storydetails (papa marley anyone?) and it has fucking monkey combat....
...monkey combat....(tgwtg) ...yes...

Wow. Strong Bad and Wallace last year and this year it's more Sam and Max goodness and Monkey Island! Awesome. I'll definitely be getting this for WiiWare.
Awesome review, Jared. I've been waiting for a sequel to the monkey Island games for a long time. Good to see the mighty pirate back in action and good review.
Monkey Island, as everyone said is one of the best adventure games of all time.

Umm..yeeaah...well that right there was the cheap copout I was talking about. Oh, and btw, Connor McLoud is from Zeist and Batman's shoes have retractable ice-skates (which he bought with his Bat-credit card). Sure, why not.
And for MI4..sure, 3D was the problem. Lame story, blatant disregard for continuity and jokes that in 95% consisted of "hey, look at this! we are recycling old characters and REFERENCING something from previous installments! Isn't it FUNNY?" were just mild annoyances. Damn you, 3D!

07.14.2009 - 05:45 | aritarkwell you're no fun, monkey island 4 was great fun. as was monkey island 3...
it was the ending of monkey island 2 that was cheap regardless of being an overall awesome game

07.14.2009 - 07:53 | kOPFA little correction.
Elaine Marley's voice actor in Tales of Monkey Island, Alexandra Boyd, was also the voice actor in Curse of the Monkey Island, not in Escape of the Monkey Island.
Good review though, I've always loved Monkey Island games and Tales of Monkey Island is no exception.
