I still play my old PC versions of Doom, never really buying it again. I rented it once for the SNES and was sorely disappointed. Ever since then, I've only ever played Doom on the PC.. and that's probably the only way I will still ever play it.
There's numerous ports out there that update graphics and controls, and even add mouselook.. ZDoom, Doomsday, Skulltag. Or, if you prefer one that keeps everything almost exactly how it was in the old days (with only very minor additions), there's Chocolate Doom.

I just got Wolfenstein 3d on the iphone the other day (it was only two bucks! You can't even find a used copy of this game for two bucks!) I had heard good things about it, never played it before just seen videos, and the price was right and i bought it and I haven't stopped playing it since. The controls are so fluid, and the gameplay is sweet. The turning could be a little better and I find it a little difficult to strafe, but an amazing game none the less. If my research is correct and the same people who developed that game for the iphone and doom for the iphone, then i am totally going to buy this... as soon as I beat Wolfenstein.

I do plan on getting this, and Wolfenstein after playing the free version of that availiable in the App Store and being very impressed. I can admit that, for some people, the control scheme you have to use on the iPhone won't and never will work, but even with that said, you have to admit alot if time and effort has gone into these ports, and it really does show.

11.17.2009 - 14:17 | chungyI find it amusing that you called the earlier port a "bootleg" merely because it requires a jailbroken iPhone... it's just as much legal as this one is (both are even under the same free software license, the GNU GPLv2, with source code for the official port available at http:// www.doomworld.com/ idgames/index.php? id=15906 :P).
But you know the REAL reason that we keep buying Doom: because it is awesome (although most of the Doom community doesn't really care about the base games anymore... it's all about the WADs baby). But to make you feel better, I'm sure you haven't paid enough money for Doom to match some of these guys...

Nothing, I repeat, nothing will ever top Doom. Not only is the gameplay fun and frantic, but the levels are nicely varied (ranging from space stations to literal fortresses of Hell), the weapons are all unique and awesome, the sprites are the best I've ever seen in a game (better than most 3D models in modern games), and the levels are non-linear, with multiple paths to complete them. Not buying the IPhone port of Doom is an easy way to get your soul damned to Hell for all eternity, and the cacodemons will be sad :(.
Curse you id software, for not finally making a Doom box, in the vien of the first game consoles that had one or two games each. A dedicated Doom console with online or lan hookup.
It would sell Millions of copies, and we would gladly buy it. Perhaps then we could stop buying this game again.
Oh well, glad the iPhone got a good port of the game.
