i'm so glad everyone seems to be talking about this game again.
one of my favourite games ever and i just finished the SE of monkey island .

pro tip. if you dont want to get lost in the forest use the old guy from the shop to get to the sword master and use the map of dancing instructions to find the tresure (back means up) ;)

This is one of the best game ever ! I can play it again and again and i'm never bored.

The 2 first Monkey Island and masterpiece, play it (and the 3rd was pretty cool too) !

Yeah, the game was awesome, and the remake is still awesome.

Can't believe such a game can still hold up in modern gaming.

    *sigh*
    Where did LucasArts go wrong?

A true classic, and a must-play for any gamer.

The special edition remake is just terrible. It's the videogame equivalent to a Citizen Kane remake.

But you can just push a button and the game turns into the classic again...with graphics and all, Jane. ;)

I'm surprised you didn't mention Majus' masterpiece.

It sums up the whole Secret of Monkey Island...but if you don't want to know the end because you wanna play it by yourself, don't watch it. However, everybody who has already played it should watch it (There are an English and a German version).

Great review of a great game.

Great review, except for the maze-criticism. Like tric said, you never have to wander aimlessly.

This and Monkey Island 2 are the best adventure games ever made. Possibly the best games too.

That's it not one of you is going to talk about Grim Fandango then fine fuck it I will. I think Many is in this one anyway with a button that says ask me about Grim Fandango.

    Uh, a reference to a 1998 game in a 1990 game? As if :p

There IS one in The Curse of the Monkey Island, but that's the 3rd game in the series while this is the first one. ;)

as soon as the remake came out I bought it on the spot. 10$ you can NOT go wrong. This game always was a masterpeice and I have nothing against the remake. The voice acting is great, the visuals are great, and it will always remain a loved classic.

Nice! I made a retrospective of the series in the blog section with Welshy. Now there's a more professional version. =D. It's cool that you're doing this and splitting it up into equal parts. I was worried I didn't cover all the games, you know.

Thanks again for this. It's an honor. These games rock and deserve attention! These games are fun to play and enjoy!

The remake was kind of a dissapointment, mainly due to the bland art style, terrible interface, and generally clumsy gameplay. They really should have modernized it a litte by, for example, allowing you to click through dialogue and souble click on exits to move faster.

The voice acting makes it worth a playthrough though.

The voice actors are the ones from the 3rd Monkey Island installment: The Curse of Monkey Island.

The now have the 5th game(s) out "The Tales of Monkey Island which are in episode form (same with Sam & Max).

Sierra and Lucasarts had the best adventure games ever. I really hope they remake the 2nd Monkey Island.

I admit I played it in the Old School form. I own the game for PC and Sega CD so I was used to maneuvering with a D-PAD.

Best Achievement: 10minutes but no longer.
    Best Insults:
You make me want to puke.
You make me think somebody already did.

I got this scar on my face during a mighty struggle!
I hope now you've learned to stop picking your nose.

I'm not going to take your insolence sitting down!
Your hemorrhoids are flaring up again, eh?

Although The Curse of Monkey Island's were better since they rhymed!

This is possibly one of the best games of all time.

I keep wanting one of the TGWTG staff to do a Lets Play on it.

I've often thought about checking out some of LucasArt's classic PC titles like this series. Does anybody know if the games are compatible with Windows XP on a newer computer? I just fear shelling out the dough for a game I can't even play.

The Secret of Monkey Island was the first and still the best adventure game I've ever played. Purchasing the Special Edition remake was a no-brainer after downloading and playing the demo on XBLA, especially for 10 dollars. Like Minx, I also hope that Lucasarts makes a Monkey Island 2 Special Edition.

    Krav1nov,

A few of the Lucasarts games are available on Steam, ranging from $5 to $20, depending on the title. You can find out more about and/or order games for download here:

    http://store.steampowered.com/publisher/LucasArts/

However, if you already own the classic games on disks and/or CDs, you can play them on your Mac or PC via a program called ScummVM, which can be downloaded here:

    http://www.scummvm.org/

This was an awesome video, and a fitting tribute to The Secret of Monkey Island. Great job. :)

His critizism about the forest maze was unfounded. You were never meant to figure out the path on your own (or look it up), you were meant to talk to the shopkeeper, and follow him through the forest.

  • dirk123

As people mentioned before me, the maze part was unfounded.

Things I don't like about the special edition:
    - Unfriendly Item menu (was more designed for XBOX version it seems)
    - Not so great "upgraded graphics", but it is partially forgiven, because it is on top of the old graphic to make the switching possible. (Would have prefered CoMI style myself or the better Amiga graphics which had terrible sound compared to the PC version).
    - The voices sounded for all characters (except Guybrush) stiff. Could be because of the slow text that appears in the old version.

I hope that when LeChuck's Revenge gets remade, it will also get the option to have Classic graphics WITH Voices.
Or 2 games in 1, without the change between old and new. Making the graphics also more appealing to the newer audiance (Characters looked awefull in Special Edition upgraded graphics, but the backgrounds were great)

The Secret Of Monkey Island is undoubtably the best game ever. I even bought the Remake knowing that I might not be able to play it on my rusty old PC.
    And I cannot. :(

They desperately need to bring back many of those adventure games. I don't even care if they are remakes. I know I can use SCUMMVM and DOS BOX but it'd be great to get some compilation discs that play natively on current hardware/software.

    Excellent review as always.

That was weird. Really weird. Tim Schafer is mainly known for Full Throttle, Psychonauts and the upcoming BrĂ¼tal Legend? Really? You can't think of any more memorable title then Full Throttle?!

Anyway, I think it's cool The Game Heroes are getting the word out there about some good old classic Adventure games hitting the market again. Go check it out everybody, this is video game history.

    Do you need to yell?
Most people don't buy it for the (crappy) upgraded graphics. They buy it for:
    1. Being able to play it on their computer WITHOUT using Dosbox or ScummVM.
    2. They buy it for the voices
    3. They buy it to show LucasArts that adventuregames aren't dead, so tha LA might revive other series as well.

good call mike red. gameplay and plot are definately more important than graphics in any game. yes, ANY GAME. however no one want a game to look like crap. and the original SMI did not.
