Great translation Benzaie, thank you for share the information!

One thing that bothers me about the PS3 is the fanboysm. Here in Europe most people love Sony products, and the PS3 in special. If someone says that wants a Wii or a XBOX360, they look like "why do you want this Atari 2600, when you can have a PS3 for almost the same price? Even a PS2 is better! Wiii is for kids, and Xbox360 can do half what PS3 can do"

But I have to admit that the Sony products are great!

  • Kakeh

Fanboyism for the Ps3 in Europe may be true but it pale sin comparison to the 360 fanboys in the US. I own both systems and I only notice a couple of small differences between the 360 and PS3

  • ZombieHunter56

    Huh...
It's kind of like that in the US, except with Nintendo. Pretty much everyone has a Wii, and ps3 owners are kind of laughed at for spending and adverage of $100 US for our consoles and $30 more for our games. I'm convinced its a worthwhile purchase, though. The ps3 has the best hardware and the most features by far.

  • DeathsHead419  - Wow

How much blow did these guys buy with their PS2 profits? BC is good because people do not have infinite space. Digital Distrubution is bad, because I want to buy real things, not lines of code.
And to top it off: we saw the mint Nintendo was making, so we decided (like Microsoft, sigh) to rip it off to get some of that cash ourselves.
    Thanks Benzaie, very illuminating.

  • theenigma

    Great job Benzaie!

I can say 100% that I would buy a PS3 if I could play / download some of the PS2 games from my collection.
I can't agree with the chap in the vid when he says that people who still have PS2 games, still have a PS2... not true.
I sold my PS2 but kept quite a few of my most favourite games on the off chance I could play them at some point in the future.

Over here in the UK/EU Sony never released a FULLY backward compatible PS2 emulator with the PS3 unlike in the first gen Japanese and US PS3s which I believe used "hardware" rather than "software" to emulate the PS2 games.

I had the chance to get one of the original "60GB" UK versions but passed on it when it turned out there was no guarantee I could play my old games using the cut-down "software emulation" it came with.

If they put the whole back catalogue online (at reasonable prices) I'm sure both Sony and us would be happier than if they left it "as is".

Keep up the great work :-)
    Cheers,
    Harv

  • JorWat  - Warning! Long, potentially offensive message!

Let me start this by saying I am not a Sony fan, I don't have a PS3. But if I did, I think I would be at least a bit offended by this.

So he says Nintendo got an increased market (and hence profit) from the introduction of the PlayStation, and that "now it's Nintendo's turn to create a new market today, which I hope will be profitable for us in the future."

This 'new market' is mostly families, right? Just look at the target market of the 'Wii' games, i.e Wii Sports, Wii Music, Wii Fit. Does this mean Sony are planning to make these types of games, because I don't think this is what the PS fans particularly want?

Another thing. So, if we still have GTA:San Andreas, we either buy it again, or hook up the PS2 every time we want to play it? I agree with DeathsHead419. Backwards compatibility is needed. For their plan, every PS1 and PS2 game would have to be uploaded on the PSN. And what is he talking about? People don't want to play old games (i.e. Gran Turismo 1 or 2) as newer better games are out? Um, ever heard of nostalgia? And what about games like Crash Bandicoot, for which there are no sequels on the PS3?

From what he said, it seems Nintendo is doing well, so Sony is trying to copy them, with the previously mentioned increased market, and the motion controller. Are all the companies becoming the same? I think they should just stick with what they are doing. The PS3 is for the 'hardcore gamers' and the Wii is for the families.

  • Leifonuss

Gran Turismo 1 is still amazing and good looking :)

I guess your obsession with the Nintendo brand excuses you for not knowing. :cheer: But the PS and PS2 had a ton of these games and many were developed by Sony themselves.

    @Endless_Nameless

Heh, I'm also an European 360 only owner but I haven't been exposed to these fanboys.
However I do know other 360 owners who seem more obsessed with converting others than actually playing games(should think it was politics).

Are these PS3 owners fanboys because you haven't been able to convert them?

I really need to meet some real PS3 users, and not just use The Game Overthinker's depiction of 'hardcore gamers'.

No, in fact I don't own any console (only a DS), but the simple mention of a Wii, and how its price is dropping, made people crazy ("what are you, a sissy player? aren't you a real player?";). And I don't know any people here that has a XBox360, or even ads for it. I don't try to convert them, I just try to show that games aren't made only with powerful graphics.
  • SpazzMaster

Sony...just needs to stop making video game consoles. Yeah, the PS2 was the best console of it's generation and I played the crap out of my PS1, but if the PSPGo isn't going to be their down fall, then the Motion Controller certainly will be, because people will see it, as I do, as a rip-off of the Wii-Mote, and their scheme to sell more Playstation Eyes (which you need for the thing to work).

Now I'm not saying that Sony screwed up with the PS3; I do own one (not for the games because I've yet to see one that has caught my interest), but they have completely forgotten why they got into the gaming business in the first place. So what if they have the most exclusive franchises than their competitors? I'm looking for QUALITY, not QUANTITY.

    VIVA NINTENDO!!!...and Xbox

  • Mav

With all the money they are making, i dont think they are going to stop making consoles, even if they are in third place at the moment!

  • OctaBech

    @Endless_Nameless

Sure and that's why you dragged silly consolewars here.
:P It's pretty obvious what you along with SpazzMaster are and I pity you. :(

  • dirk123

I still have a PS2 and will keep it.

Maybe if the PS3 was 200 euros (same price I bought my PS2 for when it was new), then I will buy it.

Especially since the only future PS3 releases that I would buy would be future Kingdom Hearts installments.

  • popmasterruler

This guy can kiss my ass!I want to play PS2 games on my PS3!Bring back BC!

  • aeongod  - Long winded

YES YES YES! keep it coming Benzaie!

Btw yes there is fanboyism on both sides of the spectrum. fanboyism akin to blind reverence for their respective manufacturers.

honestly the only real difference is how those companies treat their customers.

People will cite the 360 overheats, red rings, etc. but their customer service at least got my system back to me in a reasonable time. For free. I was only out 3ish weeks of play time. I have other consoles so this wasn't the end of the world. I was then able to continue to play my favorite games on that system.

I was of course forced to keep my old ps2 like most would if I wanted to continue to play that library of games. But of course before there even was such a thing as ps3 I had already replaced my ps2 because their drives constantly fail. And that was at my expense. But there are great games on that platform so of course I shelled out. Of course, since the ps3 I have had to buy a ps2 slim because the second ps2 drive died in about the same time frame.

This doesn't stop at Sony consoles. It seems as though they don't build with any regard for lifespan. It's throw away technology. You're going to buy the new slimmer version they release ever year or two anyways, right?

Just my experience with the company. Not that Microsoft is without criticism but honestly aside from mailing in my 360 one time 3 years after I purchased it, my experiences with them do not bring such a bitter taste as Sony. But just like everyone else I will probably continue to send my money their way.

I always thought this page summed up the experiences quite nicely: http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=sony_bullshit

I find this a bit ironic, because if anyone's going for quantity over quality, it's Nintendo. The Wii has approximately two hundred trillion games, and most of them are random third-party games that are based off of movies or TV shows, or gimmicky things for the family, like Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and things like that. Sure, Nintendo is certainly catering to a specific audience, but in doing so, it all but abandoned its audience that it had catered to for twenty or thirty years. Yes, it has some games that I'd like, such as Dead Space, Mad World, RE: Umbrella Chronicles, No More Heroes, Metroid Prime 3, and that kind of thing, but really, those games are few and far between. Just go to any gaming store and check out the Wii's library. How many of those games really catch your eye?

Nintendo's best move so far has been creating the Virtual Console. However, that's a bit sad in and of itself, for while it is truly fantastic to give gamers the chance to play games that they might have otherwise missed, it's depressing to see that the Wii's best asset is offering games that are decades old.

  • Mav

Your talking as a hardcore gamer though, the Wii library is exactly what the target audience want

I don't think it's even possible for me to agree more. It's one thing to not have backwards compatibility, but to have actually offered it, and then to have taken it away is a real dick move. I don't want to have to own two systems in order to be able to play Playstation games.

  • popmasterruler

Exactly! The worst part is Sony said it was bad when the 360 didn't have BC.Sony said that it was an important feature then they go back on their word and say that it's not important.

  • 9_6

Wow, that guy can take his smug smile and shove it, I do want a ps3 but I'm sure as hell not going to buy one until I can play my huge collection of ps2 games on it and I'm sure there are MANY people like me who feel the same way so less money for you.
Did that prick ever hear of people who don't have enough room to hook up 2 consoles at the same time or simply don't want to permanently unplug and plug consoles back into the tv?
It gets annoying with my xbox and n64 already, I usually just don't bother anymore.
Worst of all, there HAS been a ps3 that plays ps2 games. Why did that get taken away?
    What a Dick.

  • ThatGuyWithTheMask

But the only reason i dislike Sony
is because they don't care about
    their fans
they throw games out there and are like
    "buy it"
i use to love Sony, but i have just forgotten about them because to be honest
Both Nintendo and Microsoft treat their supporters better

  • AndThatsWhyMommyCriesAtNight

I'm playing the world's smallest violin for all these asshats complaining about Sony and the PS3. You wanted Backwards Compatability.....then you should have got the system at launch like I did. 600 bucks was not hard to come by and I'm a mover for heaven's sake!

No you griped and griped about the price is too high! Sony says that they could make a cheaper system but sacrifices would be made. Now there's a cheaper system but these clowns still bitch because it doen't have all the bells and whistles of the 60gig.

Did you really expect Sony to pass up on all the potential revenue by adding past PS2 games to the online store? I'm surprised that they let the earlier PS3 models have BC. You snooze you lose.

So if you want the PS3 then by all means get it, but if you don't want it then just don't buy the damn thing and shut the hell up about it.

  • popmasterruler

I never complained.I wanted to buy it but couldn't get the money.I was busy at school and didn't have time for a job.My grandmother(whom I live with)didn't want to buy it so I was up shit creek without a paddle. You can kiss my ass too! There are many reasons why some couldn't afford it.Just because some people are late to the party and others were thinking logically and didn't want to drop $600 for a console doesn't mean that they deserve to miss out on certain features. It's all about showing your customers some respect.

  • Mav

600 bucks is not hard to come by? What planet are you on? I don't care if you are a mover...

You're kidding, right? Six hundred bucks is utter bullshit. The PS2 has backwards compatibility and it didn't cost 600 dollars, or 400, or something ridiculous like that. Even though the PS3 is "cheaper" now, it's still pushing 300 dollars. At that price, and at 60 dollars per game, it's just not worth it. The 360's gone down to a relatively reasonable price, and the Wii was reasonably priced from the get-go. So what's Sony's deal? The guy said in the interview that when Sony got its price drop, it sold ten times as many PS3's. No shit; I can easily believe that only 10% of the fans would pay for something that's ludicrously overpriced. I mean, seriously, did those idiots really think that everyone would immediately drop 600 dollars for a game system? And this was when, other than Metal Gear Solid 4, it had NO games that the 360 didn't also have. The PS3's library has become a bit more of its own entity now, but back at launch, there was no reason to get it when a system with the same library of games cost about half as much.

  • S_Pac_3:16

I don't want games to go to digital distribution. I like to buy hard copies and sit them on my shelf to admire them. It's hard to do that with a little icon on the screen.

Anyway, the PS3 is looking a little more enticing now and I feel that I'm ready to buy one now when I can. I didn't want to get one when it first launched.
As for backwards compatibility, I still have my PS2 AND my PS1. So it's not to much of an issue for me, but I still wish the PS3 has that option.

  • Wulfenlord

Nice try on rationalizing away the fact that this junk of technology hits people who want to play PSX and PS2-games right in the face!

Herp derp, if you have a PS3, you already sold all your old games, because the PS3 has so many, and if you REALLY want old games, you can BUY them on PSN, so you don't really own them

  • Lotus Prince

I have a Gamecube and my brother owns a Wii.

Wouldn't you know it - we didn't sell our N64 and all of its games. Who woulda thunk it?

    Hey dude,

As mentioned the PS3 didn't get FULL BC in the EU / UK, if it had I'm sure more people would have bought one. I can tell you I would have been one of the first to pick it up if it did have the "full-fat" features that the US and Japanese markets were allocated with.

I also want to nip the argument that it would have been possible to import a US PS3... not unless you like things running at really high temps! I think I'd rather wait for a little while than chance my TV room catching light!

Each to their own and I hope you enjoy your console, it is a pity that Sony didn't stick to their guns with the BC promise.
I feel that they may have lost quite a lot of potential customers due to the backtracking on the BC issue. Maybe they will see the error of their ways and release a "Special Edition" console with everything turned to "11" :woohoo:

    Cheers,
    H

  • Blacksmith

Good job on the translation, Ben.

As to what Mr. Brunois was saying, of course his argument against backwards compatability is nonsense. I know he's just a spokesman (and thus probably not the one that made the decision), but they really should have given him a better line than that. Why have downloadable PSN games at all if people didn't want to play their old games? Also, even if gamers had sold their PS2 games, someone would still own them.

Idiotic reasoning aside, I have heard that Sony is still losing money on their console sales and BC is an even more costly feature. It's interesting to note that nobody made such a big deal about the SNES or the N64 having BC. People were just spoiled with the PS2. However, it is a great feature and Sony could still potentially make money by re-releasing their old PSX and PS2 lineups.

I agree. Why? First, there's the satisfaction with actually owning a physical copy of the game. A real concern that comes to mind, however, is if your system craps out, like the 360 is so prone to do, and all of your games don't actually exist, but are just digital downloads, then you are utterly fucked. At least if a previous-gen system explodes, you still have the games.
