I was actually surprised when I found out it was a side-scrolling shooter.

I have. It's pretty fun actually, there's this fun Option mechanic and a gravity-gun type weapon that lets you grab smaller space ships and throw them at others.

I've played it. The Genesis version is based on an arcade game that was released two years prior. A pizza place near me still has the machine.

It's not a bad game. It's basically a Gradius clone, complete with giant alien bosses and collectible power-ups. It's not very original, but the game is better than the infamous intro would have you believe (incidentally, the "All Your Base" stuff wasn't in the arcade version. It was added for the port).

As for this video: the joke was played out eight years ago, and was only mildly amusing in the first place.

I'm getting royally sick and tired of seeing "wtf" anywhere and everywhere. That, and this is one of the oldest jokes on the internet. And for a five second video, it went on for too long, even though it was generally short. You should've just stuck to "how are you gentlemen" and "all your base are belong to us" and ended it right there.
