Do you know if this is also available for the PS3? If so, I think I'd like to check this out. I kinda like the Yu-Gi-Oh card games for the DS, but the non-fantasy elements (Robots? Superheroes? Just give me straight-up swords and sorcery!) and overcomplicated deck management tend to put me off. This looks like it might be my thing, especially with specific themed decks.
BTW, character models are overrated. I prefer to envision the conflicts in my mind, so they tend to be much more epic than sub-par pixel skirmishes (like in the YGO DS games).

Wow, I had no idea that this game existed. This sounds like a fantastic idea!
While I definitely sympathize with Gavin in that a lack of deck customization will be a real killer for hardcore MtG players, you have to consider that some decks are utterly broken and ridiculous, and will suck all of the fun out of the game for everyone except for the few players that have a deck with the Power 9 cards, and unfair bullshit like that, so I actually appreciate forcing the players to stick with the cards they're dealt, as opposed to being able to make a broken deck that will clobber everything in its path. I think that the game creators made the right decision, though it will definitely leave a bad taste in some people's mouths.

That was a very good, open minded review that had equal focus on the good and the bad. Kudos my dear Joe, kudos.
…And the fires of hell stuff just made me crack up.

Nice review. My friend actually owns quite a damn few cards, and is really good at it. It is actually a really good game. A couple months ago, I beat him for the first time at 2/3, and I was so happy. :D
Also, near the end, that just made me think: "I heard that, Curtis!"
Also, RIP spoonyexperiment.com. Hopefully you will ne revived!!
Anyways yeah, good review. Would probably pick that up if I had a 360.

Interesting. I would be more of the hardcore type of fan if it wasn't for the lack of players around here and for some of the dicking around with the game WotC has done for a few years now, but its still cool. From that standpoint, its hard for me to rate a game like this * . Little customization does not inspire confidence, but merely being able to play an opponent of your own caliber is a plus. I think I would cautiously side with Joe on this one.
And BTY, Yu`Gi`Oh`! is from the devil, Magic is from the Elder Gods themselves! Remember that. ;)
* Of course, I would need a 360 to even buy, so that kinda makes that point moot.

My father threw away my Pokemon and Digimon toys because he tought Beast Wars Transfomers, Pokemon, Digimon, Yugioh, the Simpsons and Dragon Ball along with the rest of the anime series were evil.
He has changed his opinion about some of those things but I have to play Pokemon and watch anime in secret.
BTW, nice video, keep on doing your fantastic work :D

And yes that's from not having deck customization options.

07.03.2009 - 22:09 | LartyKimarous, no it is not for the PS3. The first I heard of the game I was kinda pissed that there's no PS3 version. I have played some Magic with my friends, and I would have really wanted to play against other players online. But then again, if the game is only average it probably wouldn't be worth it.
I have been able to beat my friend, who has played magic for years many times with a deck compiled from the contents of two 16€ theme decks. Magic can sure be an expensive game, but it's the deck building that does the "magic". ;)

"Did that Spined Worm just jizz on the enemy player?" Best quote ever. I know what you mean about not being able to get into it, My trouble wasn't so much parental just that when I started picking up on the whole realm of card games and this was brought to my attention, there was so much to learn and I felt like I was at a huge disadvantage. That and the Pokemon TCG had completely ruled my life before hand. Damn you POKEMON!!!!! But I'll definitely have to check this out. Is it an Xbox 360 exclusive game by the way or is it out for PS3 as well?

..either real-life or virtual. They are addictive like crack and once you're hooked you'll be just shelling more and more money and you'll never be quite satisfied with what you've got. Especially since most of the good stuff comes from "boosters", which is short fot "a small overpriced package that will give you some random crap most of the time and only just ever so often a small tiny portion of something you really want, so they are sure you'll be coming back for more and more".
Nowadays you can buy card games that have most of the benefits and fun of CCG's but without the OCD part of buying more and more (and everyone can join in, you don't have to scour around for a fellow "fan" to play the game with). Check out Dominion for instance. Plays quickly, feels like CCG, plenty of variety but it's a stand-alone game.

07.03.2009 - 23:18 | DaniusKangOne of your best yet.
Although lack of deck custimization, while I actually understand why its not in there, is crippling to any actual player.

Well, well - we meet again Joe! I'm back - your biggest comment Nemesis is here to comment upon you work ONCE AGAIN!
But... ok - to the point. The review is damn good - fine job. You are really making a name for yourself, and I like that - you didn't appear that good in the beginning, came a long way, and your work is good. I don't watch all your stuff, but this one brought my attencion.
About Magic itself - I started with the game, also when I was ten, or something, and yes - my mom dumped the cards I bought, becouse they were the work of Satan. No - I'm not kidding, that's what she said. Anyway, later on I started to play it a bit more, and it was cool, but the amount of expansions, add-ons, boosters, bla bla bla - that really killed the game for me. I stopped. I am a board game/card game fan, I'm not into video games that much, but I played this version, and - well - it's ok. I'd give it 8/10 even. I think that the nerd you mentioned in your review is too hardcore, balls-to-the-wall with this stuff, dude - get a life (like me - molesting children and burying them in my back yard), so I don't think the game is that bad.
However - if someone wants to have fun playing a card game, and not spending money on all that booster bullshit and stuff - I'd recommend A Game of Thrones LCG, from FFG. It's a new format, check it out - if you visit the website, you may even read the interview I did with the creator - Nate French - for our Polish games magazine (the interview is translated, don't worry). Check it out!
So Joe - good review, like it, want to see some more stuff, maybe some board/card games (like the JewWario stuff). Keep'em comin' I'll keep'em raten'.

Yeah I thought the game was that old considering the Magic references in Fallout 2. So we can add Magic to the list of things parents were tricked into believing was evil, along with rock & roll containing subliminal suicidal messages, and dungeons and dragons training nerds in the dark arts. I hereby swear if I ever have kids, I'm going to check these things out personally instead of relying on a profit-driven media.

I've played the game a lot at the end of the 90s, and always thought the part where you design your deck to be the most fun...I mean it's a Collectible Card Game, the whole point is to be able to create your own strategy.
For me, the no deck design thing means that this game can't possibly be worth more than 5/10, because it misses one of the most important aspect of the card game.

I can see how not being able to customize would cause some issues. While I'd probably prefer to start out with a sort of themed deck (since I'm unfamiliar with the game), once I figured everything out I'd want to mix and match for my own strategies or favorites.
Kinda makes me wonder why they chose to leave that aspect out. Since, like other people have said, it's such a core aspect of why people get into Card Strategy gaming...
I'd still like to check it out, though. The value seems there for 10 bucks, and even if they did end up releasing more content, it would probably still be cheaper than the physical cards.

07.04.2009 - 03:41 | nitoro81Sincerely, I think that all these money-sucking card games should be put outlaw, but I enjoyed your review.

What's funny is I just recently unearthed all my old card game type ...cards, like a day or two ago and was just looking at them, good ol' magic the gathering. I had the problem of nobody ever wanting to play it as well, siiiiigh. If anybody has ever played a yugioh game called the duelist of the rose, that's a card battle game with full in depth monsters/monster fights, and there were at least 100 characters to view, and that was for the ps2, i wonder why they couldn't have done that for a next gen game.... saaad
