This review is good, but it is eerily similar to Darksydephil's review of this game on youtube, you practically address the exact same points
Im not going to say you stole the ideas from him, as you said this review was held back on release, but did you happen to see the video?

Who? Suffice to say No. Never heard of that person. I hardly have enough free time to watch my friends videos here on the site, much less anyone else.
Beginning and Ending segments were filmed days after the game came out, the middle voice over was done a couple days back.
I dont see why anyone WOULDNT come to the conclusion that this game was good, but overpriced and will be remembered as exploitation.

it was a really great game, but not sure if it was $60 game material, i mean, it didn't even finish the whole story line and what the engineer was supposed to do?! the game description said it would be crutial to the vitory of the HALO war! and do we ever see these characters again? Not in any game i've seen, and now we come out with a prequel that won't talk about the ODST events and will just leve me hanging?...screw that i'm saving my money and buying good games with a major replay value like Little Big Planet, that game had barely any storyline and still had more of a replay value than ODST...enough of my rant , the Pre-order controller was pretty kick ass, and the story itself was decent it just was too damn short, and not worth the price or the Pre-Order value, and due to this failure as a game, i have lost all hope and most of my interest in the halo series... sorry bungie, but unless i hear Reach is brilliant, i'm pretty much givin' up.

Someone else remember that presser! Nice to know Joe is telling the truth, Army strong bitches!
-

I personally find all the halo games overrated. Not necessarily bad games, just okay games. There alright popcorn games. I like the first one, thats a solid game, I dont really care for the 2 and 3. My problem is that there are many better games than halo, but halo is treated almost like a God. I dont hate Halo, but I dont like what it has become.
As for ODST, I agree with everything you said, 100% Joe. Keep speakin the truth, man, and never let the idea of what you say being unpopular ever stop ya from statin the truth
-
11.17.2009 - 21:33 | YetAnotherGeek
I know! I have the Game Informer magazine that said ODST would not be a full $60 game! That's a freaking $20 game right there, if even that!

Angry Joe I gotta say. Nice to see you're steering away from the others and saying the truth. I absolutely agree with your review 100%. They cheated us and yeah this one is overrated again. So many things could of been better but no they weren't. After watching this review it's reminded me of how ticked off I was when I first got it. Oh well. Again Angry Joe great review and keep on speaking your mind.
Also love the bit with Adam. Especially the last part. Epic man.

I think I've gained even more respect for you, Joe. I had you pegged as a Halo fanboy, but you've shown a lot of maturity and wisdom with this review.
Also, awesome editing with the opening sequence.

11.17.2009 - 21:51 | b9bomber
Damn it Joe! You couldn't have been more melancholy. It was depressing.
-
11.17.2009 - 21:55 | ThatKidInTheHoodie - man and i was gonna get this for christmas...
Wow...you seem so sad like you just lost a family member....its just a game x,x
-
11.17.2009 - 22:00 | DeathsHead419 - Ya, it is just a game...
A sixty dollar game that sold millions of copies and renforces to the gameing industry that we gamers want short, shallow, Cookie-cutter FPS's that can be cranked out in a year; rather than long, thought out, narrative driven games that takes hours of fun to finnally reach the epic finale.
-
11.18.2009 - 02:27 | AngryJoeShow
LOL, Sorry, it definitely was a disappointment and I wanted that to come across very clearly.
-
11.17.2009 - 21:56 | DeathsHead419 - Yep
That's pretty much the consensus. $20 game, I'd pay that. Damn it, first this then CoD:MW2. We want longer single player campanes game devs!
Well, here's hoping for BioSock 2. The first clocked in at 12-14 hours, if I recall. Thanks for the belated review, adding to the growing chorus of discontent at least.
On a side note: I think you make a better calm, strait reviewer as Joe Vargas just talking about the game, than yelling and acting out for the laughs.
-
11.18.2009 - 02:29 | AngryJoeShow
Thanks for the suggestion to just roll as Joe Vargas, but its just not my style. In fact I almost cut the middle section completely it was so boring to listen to for me....in this case it needed to be said.
-
11.17.2009 - 21:58 | RedFox0008
I have to say, I am glad I never bought a halo game after Halo 1 for the PC.
The series has been way overrated.
All the hype over it is lost on me....
Nice to see someone review the latest crapfest for real, instead of kissing up to Macro$haft.
-
11.17.2009 - 22:01 | Emperor_Z
As much as a rip off ODST was, Halo fanboys ate that shit up despite it having nothing but a lame campaign and firefight mode. Firefight is fun, but it isn't worth $60. Almost everyone who bought ODST already had the maps, so you can't factor those into the value.
But Microsoft made a financially wise decision. It's the people that are at fault here. Freaking Halo fanboys >:-(
-
11.17.2009 - 22:02 | Ryguy987 - FINALLY!
SOMEONE HAS TORN DOWN THIS OVERRATED, OVERPRAISED, OVERPLAYED PIECE OF S*** SERIES OF GAMES! F*** YOU HALO FAN-BOYS. CHOKE ON DEEZ NUTS!
Ok, I'm done being obnoxious, but I meant everything I said. Halo is not the worst game, but I will go as far as to call it a game. I never got into HALO. The story was decent and the characters were good, but the action, I felt, was boring, repetitive, and VERY slow paced for an action game. Especially for FPS's.
I never liked HALO, and if you trolls out there want to say anything about it, e-mail me at suckmyballs@f***you.com.I know I'm getting kicked for this, but this is how I feel. I apologize if I was going off like the AMD (Angry Movie Dork), and I probably was. I'm probably also a moron for making this wall of text. Though, Joe has spoken the truth, and thus, I had to get it all out.
Also, yes, I HAVE played the three main HALO games. The only one I beat was the second because I just kept getting board right smack in the middle of the others!
-
11.17.2009 - 23:00 | DeathsHead419 - Dude
Haters are just as annoying as fanboys. Halo is a good game that's short on legth and long on hype.
-
11.17.2009 - 22:22 | catboyjeremie
Halo ODST too short? That's what I thought about Halo 2 and 3 as well but at least they're not as short and I liked 3 a lot for its really fun online CO-OP. Eh... I still think the series is overrated though but that's because there's way, way too many FPS to choose from and I simply like some more than Halo.
-
11.17.2009 - 22:23 | Adrenal Lynn
I haven't played it yet, but I've gotta say, I had NO CLUE it was so short! I've heard rave-reviews, and the promotional commercials looked incredible, not to mention the music! I had bought into the Halo-hype as much as anyone else, but a five-hour gameplay is NOT worth $60.
And no, I'm not trying to suck up to Angry Joe as in "aww yeah, aj, tat sounds fukin mesd up!!11!one!" I mean I wouldn't spend $60 of my hard-earned cash for a game I can just as soon rent, finish in a day, and return for $5 tops.
-
11.17.2009 - 22:29 | Reamer
Firefight mode is shite because you can only play it against friends on your friends list.
I'm getting the game myself for $10 through my job, but that's only because it's $10.
I agree though, the Halo franchise is over rated.
-
11.17.2009 - 22:34 | Bladebrent - 3-5 hours
I saw Gamespot's reveiw (or maybe it was IGN, I think it was IGN actually) and they said it was 6 hours but besides that reveiw, they say 3 to 5 hours. Nice one killing the one responsible for raising the scores. you should look for other guys raising or lowering game scores.
-
11.17.2009 - 22:34 | Alacar
It's all good, Angry Joe. We forgive you.
As for ODST... rent this game, play it for a weekend.
-
11.17.2009 - 22:39 | Deimos1984rd
You know I was thinking the same thing, The game is really good and the story is well done but if the game is going to cost me 63.99 it should of been longer than 5 hours or at least make it available as DLC for 1200 Micro$oft points. In fact the second disk that has all of the multiplayer map packs minus Firefight and content you probably purchased long ago should of been the rest of the single player experience.
-
11.17.2009 - 22:56 | DeathsHead419 - As for the Halo series
While there is no denying it is over rated, one could argue that almost every game these days gets hyped into outer-space. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been hailed as the second comeing, when it is clearly simply another well polished, multiplayer focused FPS.
And besides that, everyone has a different list of which games belong were on the all time greatest list. Is the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time the greatest game ever made? Of course not! Because Civilization 3: Complete Edition is the the greatest game ever made. All game Devs shall bow before Sid Meier.

I laughed out loud at the Billy Madison reference at the end. Oh my god, that was excellent!
-
11.17.2009 - 22:54 | ThomasMink
Keep fighting the good fight, Joe. That's about all I can say really.
I agreed with everything in the video.
-
11.17.2009 - 23:00 | Shadow of Intent
Im a Halo fan,but this guy is right, now a 6 sounds like crap to me,but its true, the game is way too short, and if it had more levels,it probebly would have deserved a 8 or a 9.
-
11.17.2009 - 23:01 | badcop69
i'd disagree with you if there was anything to disagree with.
i mean i like the art noir of telling the story through playable flashbacks and shit but seriously 60 bucks for 5 hours? that's not even 10 bucks an hour. wow.
i liked it best when it was first announced. i'd gladely pay 30 bucks for this but not 60 that's rediculious.
it is a great game but it's hard to over look the bullshit.
-
11.17.2009 - 23:08 | buried_treasure_yay
LOL, great review Joe. You really got some great stuff in there and it never ends. First that hilarious bit at the beginning where you ruin the dude's fun then con him, then the depressing part where you talk about the game, then the fight at the end, then a hilarious song! You're not just another guy ranting about a game or games in general, but you DO stuff man.
Props.
-
11.17.2009 - 23:11 | mauistrife
so true about that 5 hour piece of crap, but joe, almost every game out now last almost the same one hour less or more, that is something i dont like about this stupid newgen crap, yeah games look awesome but as a real games i give a crap about graphics,as a real games i WANT a story, more than 10 hours of continued playing and all that, like the old games, hell the frikking nes,snes,n64,psx,crap even the gameboy the old game boy had greater games and more enjoyable games, but still pal,its a game so dont worry to much, its to have fun,and play with your friends

Nice one Joe. Honest review. Lets all be honest here for a second. The Halo series is decent fun and yes, it was the original Xboxs' Killer App... but it never was an amazing game, until Halo 2 that is. Now, the only reason Halo 2 was amazing was because it did have a better story than the original (even though it was a sequel), but more importantly, it introduced online multiplayer made simple! It was easy to get into games and more importantly it was easy to get into games with friends (This is before all of the cheating and glitches became so prevalent). Unfortunately, Halo 3 was not on par with Halo 2, it was a little bit of fun while it lasted but nowhere near as innovative an online console game, the only real jump for Halo 3 was the Campaign Co-Op online mode but aside from that it didn't have that Halo 2 charm. Finally Halo ODST... Joe said it all, but I'd like to add just one more thing, not only is it friggin short, it's not as much fun as Halo 3 which I already stated was not as much fun as Halo 2...Notice a pattern here? Pack together a hackney remake of the best in a series and then charge more and more for each sequel (or expansion) that gets released.

Nice armor. And kick as guOohhh! You shot me you bastard.
I never played much Halo but I guess I've been spared a horrible fate.
Great video. I like how you become more and more downtrodden up to 6:41. And the ending cracked me up.
