I'm not to good at fighting games either...unless I'm fighting someone of equal or lesser skill. I get pissed in a hurry as well...hehe.
Anyway's, I'm hearing mixed reviews of this game. I'll give it a rent.
I'm guessing there is a patch coming up for this game...
...I like Terry Bogard.

I love the king of fighters series especially playing as Terry but I love a good story mode or even an ending like what Tekken and Street Fighter have KOF 12 is a very enjoyable game but for a 62.99 game you'd expect more.

For what it's worth, I hear there's a patch coming to fix the online issues and there's supposed to be DLC for some new characters in the future. $60 for the game and I have to say, I think the price should have been closer to 40 for how little we get. I love the system and I was okay with the smaller roster, but the game really needed a story.
Great review, and to those that have the game, did you notice the guy in the background who looks like Bob Ross? Play arcade mode and check out the lower left hand side when the cutscene shows the statue of liberty.
Finally, nice use of mugen and how funny that your character is based off of Kyo's sprites from the KOF series!

Was that a Japanese accent or a William Shatner impression, Joe?
Anyway, great review!

I'm going to repost what I posted on your site Joe...
Well, here’s a mini review of the game from me, a hardcore KOF fan.Well, first off, their goal with the game was to bring in newcomers by basically striping the game down (That’s why they’re calling it a rebirth) and starting over basically. KOF games are USUALLY known for a few things, one of those being a ton of characters, which this game does not have, but I was alright with that. Going to KOF XI for an example, that game had a story mode, challenge mode, and plenty of neat unlockables. This game has……..none of that, but yet again, I am alright with that. Now on to the actual game itself, like you said, the gameplay in it is pretty damn good (Despite a lot of missing moves and not enough characters), but there’s just ONE thing that really ruins the game……
THE ONLINE IS UNPLAYABLE. Now I understand this is a multiplayer game, but if the multiplayer online doesn’t work, how are you supposed to fully enjoy the game? Now, they have already patched the online once (It didn’t do much…….at all), but at the VERY least, it means they are looking into it. I also want to point out that Ignition (Who handles the games shipping I believe) has talked to SNKplaymore and has asked them for extra content in the form of DLC. (http://forums.ignitionusa.net/showthread.php?t=1481 Link for those wondering.)
Overall though, I would honestly recommend waiting for things to get better/DLC, and I would only recommend getting this game when the price has dropped.
I hope this mini review helps you guys.

Great review Joe. Btw people! At 5:41, when the Mai x Chun-Li pic came up. Did anyone except me kinda forget about Joe at that point?

So there WASN'T an insanely hard, and above all CHEAP final boss waiting for you at the end until you put your fist through the screen?
Joe, if you knew more about SNK and their series, trust me, a lack of THAT almost doesn't make it an SNK fighting game. They call it "SNK Boss Syndrome" for a reason.
-
07.31.2009 - 23:21 | eXtreme
oh well i would say for the lack of content i should be a Xbox Live Arcade thing, not a fullprize game

@speedwagon33
Is there any mention of whether the DLC is free or not? If its free then it sounds more like a patch if its not it sounds like the conspiracy theorists were correct and companies are leaving standard game content out to seel back to you at a later point.

Although, I would imagine some of the DLC to cost something, but who knows?

That opening theme reminded me how I can't find that Kung Fu Hustle DVD.
Then the sad music made me wonder where that Hero DVD went.
What's the Angry Joe method for explaining why massive stacks of DVDs have everything but the one your looking for?

Sounds like a buy to me......at around $20 pre-owned, a few years from now.
Seriously, they had to know better than this. And, no boobalicious boobs? Just salt in the wound, right there.
Damn Joe, I was really disheartened to hear all this, man. I was really looking forward to this one. I'm guessing that SNK will stick fans with DLC that should have been on the game in the first place. Screw that.

I think that a fighting game can be good without any story content, though story certainly helps you connect to the characters and increase the longevity of the game. However, if a game has no storyline, the online support needs to be nigh-flawless to compensate, in my opinion.

08.01.2009 - 01:10 | Moffen
You know, this video and how you respond to your wiewers has really got me interested in seeing more from you. Keep up the great work!
Now I'm more of a Tekken person, but this game seemed pretty good.
-
08.01.2009 - 00:47 | squadiee
Joe, you play fighting games like me

Story and content, IMO, is very important. There is little point of having this amazing combat system if you only play the game for five minutes and then only ever get it out when your mates come over. Now, with story AND amazing controls, well, I don't think I'd ever put it down!
-
08.01.2009 - 00:51 | Kelberoth
I understand the fact that you're not a kof fan so you don't know the characters background or feel like the game is lacking a lot of content. I understand the fact that for new buyers it's gonna feel really incomplete, but here's my take on it.
This game looks SO GOOD and plays SO DAMN WELL. The fact a 2D fighter looks this good and plays this well blows my mind already, you realize it's not an easy task to make hand drawn sprites for every single character, scenarios and on top of everything have such a great gameplay.
The two arguably best kof games are '98 and 2002. Both are "special" versions, they don't follow the franchise's story line and the single player is short and easy (besides the last boss) on both versions, but it's still a GREAT experience, because fighting games are NOT meant to be played alone. It's either with friends, in a tournament or online.
No fighting game will EVER have a better single player than a multiplayer, and in my opinion I think it's a risky, but worthy sacrifice to scrap the story altogether in order to dedicate 100% into the amazing hand drawn graphics and gameplay.
So is the fighting all that should matters? No.
If the online net code is flawed, then it's a shame. I'd still give it at least a 8/10 though.
Honestly, it's not like Street Fighter 4 has that many great single player content either. All right, you have a little anime cutscene for each character's prologue and epilogue, but doesn't that get REALLY old? Tekken 3 was already doing that back in the 90s, its fun but is it what makes or breaks the game?
As a fighting game fan I don't think this game has any flaws but the online system. I can understand the confusion from a casual fan or someone that never played KOF, so I respect your opinion, but I hope people can overlook this because this game is just so fucking good.
But, great review as always. I'm a big fan, thanks to you I watched and played all the Riddick movies/games and I'm a fan of the franchise now

I'm good at fighting games, and I like: King of Fighters(KOF) XI, KOF Maximum Impact, KOF 2006, KOF 2002 AND KOF 2003. These KOF games are the only ones that I like about the KOF franchise.
I also have the KOF 2003 comics, a KOF artbook and some other KOF merchandise.

08.01.2009 - 01:29 | Atma - On the subject of Ash Crimson.
Yes he's a dude, but he's not gay. He just lives in that area of "Vague gay" like Kevin Spacey and Tim Curry. Otherwise it still sucks to get beaten by him.
As for my favorite fighter:It's KYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
-

That was cool review. Well done Joe. Yeah, fighting games today require more than just great fighting system. I just can't find my favorite char without knowing anything about him or her.
-
08.01.2009 - 01:59 | blackjack hill - KOF XII review
I REALLY FUCKING HATE "KING OF FIGHTERS XII. IT HAS A LOT OF PROBLEMS LISTED BELOW:
- a lot of the chatacters original special moves are not on their move lists and most of them (like Iori's special moves) are performed poorly.- the blow off moves are performed very slowly.
- this game's single play mode is short, boring and barely even challenging. I know because I beat this fucking game on normal and hard.
-if you beat this game on normal or hard, you won't get anything cool other than artwork of the characters in this game, because there's no unlockable characters or stages, which is a shame.
- there's no cool story in it.
- there's no final boss in it.
- the characters are too fucking big on the screen.
- everything in this game is rearranged and is not in the traditional KOF style.
- this game's time limit cannot be
unlimited. It should be.---------------------------------------
After I played this game for about 5 days or so, I started noticing the problems that "KOF XII" has. I got tired of playing it and was going to trade, but WHEN I FOUND OUT THAT I WOUND ONLY GET $22.00 in store credit for it. I decided to sell this crappy fighting game on amazon.com------ SO YEAH, I GIVE "KOF XII" A 5/10. It's a waste of money.
-
08.01.2009 - 02:13 | blackjack hill
hey joe!
my favorite character is Iori Yagami. SNK really fucked this guy up in KOF XII. A lot of his original special moves were trashed and replaced with stupid "hand slashing moves." Iori also has 3 or 4 other super special moves in the other KOF games, but he only has 1 super special combo in "KOF XII" (WTF?).
I'm a fan of Iori Yagami.
-
08.01.2009 - 04:00 | Strider_Reborn - Iori
In response blackjack hill, Iori has no Purple flame powers in this Iteration because in the storyline of KOF 11 Ash Crimson Somehow stole Iori's Purple flame powers for reasons yet to be revealed because there's no plot to cover this in KOF12!
Damn you SNK! for trying to cash in on the DLC thing that most game companies are doing now, At Least the SF4 Team knew not every PS3&360 owner has online play and takes their fans into consideration when making a better put together plot for these characters.
-
08.01.2009 - 22:54 | blackjack hill
Oh, I didn't know that Strider. Thanx for the info. By the way, I agree with what you said about SNK
-
08.01.2009 - 06:09 | Cross X. Brand - Iori is like that cause...
in the KOF "cannon" Ash or Ashe, or "androgynously silly hermophridite",
stole Iroi's power in the previous KOF, and is dead set to get Kyo's aswell

Its too embarrassing to share- maybe in a future fighter review episode!

I'd call it a beta. SNK has been recycling the same sprites for over 10 years now (1994-2005) and this was the first time they overhauled them and they MASSIVELY overhauled them. However this ended up costing them ALOT of money and basically they polished up the fighting and released what they had done as-is (along with also releasing a re-release of KOF 2002 in Japan) in order to help fund more high-res sprites for KOFXIII.
It actually has the smallest roster in the history of KOF (1994 had 24 fighters, this has 22) and is missing many MANY favorites. But such is the nature of a reboot. I compare it alongside other reboot KOFs like Neo Blood (the first GBA one) and Maximum Impact 1 (the first 3D one), both of which sucked pretty bad at the start but their sequels rocked (Howling Blood and Maximum Impact 2/KOF2006 in the U.S.). Compared to THEM, KOFXII is incredibly impressive because even with the tiny tiny roster and I'd actually call it GOOD despite it's deficiencies. Still that doesn't excuse it entirely but I look at it as a bit of a fund raiser effort and me? I personally feel an obligation to buy every 2D fighter that comes out these days to support the genre.
Favorite characters over here? Angel, Malin, Yuri, Hinako, Momoko, May Lee, Nagase, Mignon, Eiji, and Athena.

The first part of your post is speculation.
But good info there in the second part!
-
08.01.2009 - 03:51 | Strider_Reborn - The Fighters Generation
Now I know what your thinking, I agree it feels incomplete possibly because SNK is trying to cash in on the whole "Extra downloadable content" they will soon add to the game along with more characters to download So hopefully a story mode will be added this way too but if you want knowledge and information about the characters go to this site and thank me later.
I'm a member of this site and i'm friends with the guy in charge.

08.01.2009 - 04:02 | Masked Nightmare
I look at it as testing out the new fighting system and sprites, but that's just me. obviously they were brand new, so I can see why they didn't have much to offer in the content department. I liked the game personally, because I am indeed a fighting game fan.
The arcade mode did suck, I'll give you that.
