I gotta disagree. AS FOR ME, it was a good movie. after this review I thought like maybe I was a kid and stuff but I watched irt again and... its still a good movie.

the plot - meh... but cmon, you don't expect that much of a scenario from an MK movie WITH PG-13. and after all it was'nt too boring or something. moreover it served as a good link between the action sequences, which were VERY good for the time.
Cage's jokes? yeah they don't make you roll on the floor but they amuse and give that something to Johnny's character. besides, it aint a comedy so what did you expect?

Unlike most movies I thought were cool as a kid when I rewatched this one it was still pretty entertaining. Johnny cage has a lot of cheesy lines but I never cringed like I do in lets say uh.. Batman & Robin.
The fight scenes are pointless at times but I still think some are pretty good and the characters were not butchered like in the Street fighter movie.
and when I say characters I mean Sub-Zero and Scorpion who were cool in the games and yeah cool in this movie.

If the movie wasn't about a martial arts tournament, the fight scenes WOULD be pointless. But the whole point of a MARTIAL ARTS tournament is to, indeed, fight. Granted, some fights are unnecessary (the fight in Kano's dining room), but really, as soon as you find out it's a fighting tournament, you should have expected as much. On a side note: Who the hell did Liu fight at the beginning? Couldn't they have put in an actual character from the games?

Cage's antics and lines were perfectly set. I actually think the NC makes worse ones in this review.

It is undeniable though: The PG-13 rating sucked ASS. Hopefully Mortal Kombat 3 won't make that mistake.

I'd like to see NC do Mortal Kombat: Annihilation...but I dun't want him to waste his time, he should be presented with a challenge. The 2nd Mortal Kombat is too easy to make fun of.

Mortal Kombat was good, for its time.

Looking back it had alot of flaws, other then the ones mentioned here.
I love Christopher Lambert, but he is NOT Raiden, which of course leads to the question, 'well, who would YOU cast as Raiden?' and honestly... I got nothing.

Reptile was one of my favorites in the game serries, back when he looked the same as Sub-Zero and Scorpion, must have had something to do with the color green and my class' pet iguana. Point being, his fight, though entertaining cause he seems to be the only character keeping the generic Liu-Kang on his toes, (seriously, am I the only one who rejoiced when he met his supposed end in MKA?) was, indeed VERY pointless.

And Anialation was even worse. I would love to see the Critic be driven insnae by that movie, they tried to cram all the MK3 characters in, then killed them off after a few seconds(Johnny Cage?), or just ignored them, Nightwolf anyone?

Street Figher the movie pissed me right off!!!! Talk about a disgrace to Street Figter fans everywhere!!!! They got a chinese guy to play Ryu!!!!! How fucked up can a movie be?! And Honda is like a fat Hawaiian dude?!! Hell NO!! And how low can you go when Guile is played by Jean Claude Van Damme?!! That movie make my top 5 of shittiest movies ever made!!! Personally, I liked Mortal Kombat. Granted, it wasn't as gory as the games, but it followed what little story the games had. And besides, Mortal Kombat is a fighting game, so why would the movie be based around anything but fighting? Put simply, Mortal Kombat is probably the best video game movie made to date. Still...that's not saying a lot.

One thing interesting about this movie is that Cameron Diaz and BRANDON LEE were originally cast as Sonya and Johnny Cage. Diaz broke her wrist and had to drop out and we all know what happened to Lee.
It's weird to think what would have happened if Lee survived to star in this movie. It may have destroyed all the credibility he got from the Crow. Or maybe he would have played the part more serious and it wouldn't suck so much. oh well. Lee kicked ass

this is the first video when i dissagreed with everything he said, and my problems were

1. i dont get why he complains about fight scenes in a fighting movie
2. he said kano's english accent was an annoying one
3. i actually found jonny cage's one liners quite funny
4. the characters have been incorporated into the story very well

overall i love the mortal kombat movie, and although i accept the nostalgia critic's opinion i completely dissagree with it

I would have to say Mortal Kombat is one of my guilty pleasures along with Guyver 2 but I have to agree, that the movie sucked pretty bad. I don't know why I like this movie, maybe because my cousin and I watched it all the time when it came out on VHS. I am usually harsh on movies (Like Indiana Jones 4) but for some reason I like this one.

I love this review. Has so many funny moments. I remember Bridgette Wilson-Sampras being a good screamer in both Last Action Hero and this film but I couldn't stop laughing at the pee-take in this review! "LET ME GGGGOOOOOO!!!!"

I actually liked the Mortal CKombat movie. Sure some of the fight scenes were pointless why did they fight nameless ninjas in the beginning?) But it stuck to the Mortal CKombat storyline.
Unlike the street fighter movie which made no sense what-so-ever, starred a french man who plays the most american video game character ever, and got every bodies back story wrong.

I don't really know how you can hold pointless fight scenes as a point against Mortal Kombat.

The movie had plenty enough to complain about, but at least there was plenty of fighting, and it was USUALLY between iconic MK characters (Liu Kang vs the black guy and the army of ghost people really should have been redesigned to feature more MK characters, I don't care if it felt like SF's "need every character" syndrome, at least they'd be fighting)

That was FAR worse than the first Mortal Kombat. It had lots of plot holes, seemingly important characters that disappear and are never mentioned again after only a few minutes of screen time (it even brings back a character that died in the first movie with no explanation only to have him disappear after one scene), cheesier special effects, and even more pointless action scenes than the first movie. They couldn't even get most of the cast from the first movie to come back; nearly every character was recast.

Say what you want about the first Mortal Kombat movie. It's a masterpiece compared to its sequel.

johnny cage dies within the first minute, jax is just... HORRIBLE! cyrax and sektor, 2 of my fav MK characters, were ruined, and it had terrible acting, except for lou... lao... w/e the guy who played lui kang, cuz hes the only one that acted in the 1st one, i guess sub-zero did okay but he was in it for 2 min (w/ a terrible fight scene w/ scorpion and scorpion had the WORST one liner "SUCKERS!!!!" ... yeah)

Okay, first off, you got guts to review a decent movie that for it's time was pretty cool and in my books has gone down into the "classics" of movies made from video games. Which, by the way, there are not many (none that I can name currently).

A lot of people say it was a good movie and I agree with them and I am sure even you must have liked something in this movie. Though I know you have to review all the plot holes and things (I mean, it is what you do), sometimes it isn't that good to tell it like it is...though you are very brave for doing so and I admire you for that.
Overall, a good review to a decent (and now classic) movie that is definitely better then Street Fighter The Movie.
And as you say, the PG-13 rating was a real nut buster. They had to make it a more "toned down, family-friendly" movie.
And yes, it is called Mortal Kombat, I mean, would you have preferred they called it Mortal Combat and not make it so much like the game???
Anyway, I seem to understand why there appeared to be too many characters in this movie (though thankfully not as many in Street Fighter) and at least they made the effort to structure the plot well around so many of the Mortal Kombat characters.
Anyway, as always, keep up the good work in your reviews. Two thumbs up from me.

The plot of the MK movie is pretty much exactly the same as the plot of the first game, except for the part where they go to outworld. In the game MK2, the tournament is held in outworld, but it's never mentioned in the first game. And by "in the first game" of course I mean "in the first game's instruction manual," 'cause there is really no plot conveyed whatsoever in any of the earlier MK games.

I think the only thing people REALLY had a problem (aside from those just looking to nitpick and bitch all the time) was the lack of blood. I don't see this as being a big deal, after all... you don't fucking bleed every time someone punches you.
I also think a lot of people whined about Sub-Zero and Scorpion being on "the same side" and weren't given the chance to fight each other. Again, I didn't mind this, because the movie excused it by making you believe they're being controlled by Shang Tsung to some degree.
Also... I think the Scorpion vs. Sub-Zero rivalry should star in its own movie.

It's a funny review, but I don't agree with you about how bad the Mortal Kombat movie is.

The Street Fighter Animated Movie, and the Mortal Kombat Live Action Movie were both released about 13 years ago, and were (in my opinion) the best attempts at a computer game movie that had ever been made.

Fast forward to the present day, and I don't think anyone can argue decisively that that's changed.

...that's how i rate the MK movie at best. Sure the maker's couldn't include the game's violence cause of the PG-13 rating (to which they were kinda forced, video-games not really being considered an adult media at the time) but the characters in the games just offer so much more than the lame good-vs-evil plot shown here + lambert has got to be the biggest miscast i've ever seen: Raiden is ASIAN and a SINISTER LIGHTNING SHOOTING BMF and not a moron giving entirely pointless, heard-it-all-before motivation speeches!! Then again the 3 heroes dont fit their games alter ego either - well at least peta wilson is hot^^

Easily better than Street Fighter (as stated by most people) cause you get what you'd expect in movie based on a fighting game (which normally doesn't involve shooting^^)

Review is pretty good, though not filled with memorable quotes like your recent works...well, except:"The emperor's asshole???"-"NOOOOOOO!!!"

I liked Mortal Kombat. Game and movie. I myself enjoyed the combat scenes, also when raiden was talking to them he was practcally testing them to find the inner self. Like in the end Liu shoots like some fire out that knocks Shang into spikes. Thou your right Sonya getting captured was BS, she is trained and like a tom-boy.

This was the first review I watched after a friend directed me and I totally love the site.

To be fair, I think the Reptile fight was probably the single most awesome fight in the film. Even if it was random and shoehorned.
