Doug was a little sick while filming this, so his voice may not be the greatness that you are used to.

Revver version will be up tomorrow.. hopefully.

"You can rule my labyrinth any day."

LOL ^_^

Great list! I too always loved Down Under over the original, and do still have a vhs of Tiny Toons. smilies/smiley.gif I Flight of the Navigator for the first time this year, and I completely agreed with what you said. What I loved most about Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was the main title; I just love those choral vocals. I wish it was longer.

My younger brother LOVES Iron Giant; it is a good movie.

I've never seen Return to Oz or I don't think Nimh. I feel like checking them out. smilies/smiley.gif

Anyways, great video Doug!

I remember "Flight of the Navigator" - the first half of the movie was the coolest thing ever. However the movie gets much less cool really fast once he boards the ship, and as I remember it ends pretty suddenly and in a very cheesy way, too. Sort of like "The Forgotten", but significantly less sucky.

I've never even heard of "Return to Oz", even though it looks like something I definitely would have wanted to check out when I was a kid. I guess images of dancing Dorothy and the gang made it slip under my radar pretty efficiently.

"Prince of Egypt", meh. This gets a LOT of screen time here in Croatia, somewhere around Easter I think. It's a typical Disney, only more songs and majestic scenes and less humor. I'll take Aladdin or Emperor any time over this one.

Nimh... I remember watching this in the theaters and.. liking it but not getting it really. The plot seemed pretty confusing at the time - I guess I was expecting something in the vein of Lord of the Rings, who knows why, and those electrified rats were kinda unexpected. I WAS a bit young then, though.

All in all, love the lest. As usual, humor is toned down but nostalgia is on the high. Looking forward to Howard the Duck, though!

I enjoyed most of the list, as usual, but Mask of the Phantasm and Secret of Nimh really took the cake for me. I couldn't agree with you more that these two movies were underrated nostalgic classics. Mask of the Phantasm was, for the longest time, considered to be the best Batman movie to have been released in theaters. And it's still one of the best superhero movies of all time.

Secret of Nimh was adapted from the book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh, which in itself was quite good. But I personally feel that the movie was an improvement upon the book, mainly because of the addition of that mystical element. In addition to providing a thematic element, it also shows us that despite not being quite as smart, strong, or long-lived as the rats, Mrs. Brisby has her own special quality that makes her unique among the others.

Awesome List
written by Phalyn , November 04, 2008
Very good list. I remember when my babysitter brought us a copy of Flight of the Navigator, always liked that film.

People always talk about Pirates of the Carribean being one of the the first 'Dark Disney' films, but I think they always forget about The Rocketeer. The movie had some pretty decent darker then the norm elements, throw that in with the 1940's atmosphere of Mob run Clubs, .40 automatcs, BEAUTIFUL Jennifer Connelly and good old Nazi punching and you have a great movie.

Return to Oz, serriously, I cant promote that movie enough durring the Halloween season. The VERY contrasting atmosphere from the first movie, alone, makes it worth a look. One place that you would think would promote this film would be Hot Topic. They have a tendency to go for those dark movies, I mean Nightmare Before Christmas was thier bread and butter for a long time.

Rescuers Down Under, I remeber seeing that in theaters, and its definatly a big step up from the first movie, and thank you for cutting the bull and saying the first Rescuers was mediocre. FINALLY someone says it.

Prince of Egypt, just an awesome movie with great songs such as Through Heaven's Eyes is one of my favs. Not to mention the great visuals.

Tiny Toons movie was one of my brothers favorite movies, and it wasnt a bad movie, like you said, the Road Trip was halarious, and relatable.

Surprised someone else out there knew about Explorers, after watching this movie, that ride (the spinning ride which the kids ship's core body is)

This has got to be the best Top 11 so far! It was nice to be reminded of some movies I had forgot about or that I didn't think anyone else than me remembered. I think I was most pleasantly surprised that you brought up Tiny Toons, Rescuers Down Under and Iron Giant. As much as I think you're comedy is awesome, I really appreciate when you're being sincere as well. Keep up the good work, Doug.

PS; Maybe some time you could do a Top 11 Overrated Nostalgic Classics? Just a suggestion.

written by SimonW , November 04, 2008
YES! This was the greatest Top List EVER!!!
I remember watching all these movies, aside from the Tiny Toons Adventures Movie and Batman: Mask OfThe Phantasm. And I LOVED them all with a great passion!!!

True, a ot of movies were under-rated, and despite your famous line, I do remember them in great detail and loved to remember them once again! So, thank you Doug! smilies/grin.gif

Though this is the greatest list ever...I was surprised "Tommy Tricker And The Stamp Traveller" was not mentioned. Oh well, it does not matter, I plan to do a review of it much later. Besides, the list is fine the way it is. I now have the urge to get all those films and re-watch them again....memories of my youth... *sighs in content*

PS: Look forward to your Howard The Duck review.

If you replaced Babe with The Black Couldron then then I wouldve been 100% satisfied with your list. Babe too me just stood out from the rest of your selections but hey, its your list. Im glad Secret of Nimh is at the top since it was really was groundbreaking for the time and paved the way for such critter epics such as the 90s Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon with the dark atmosphere. Side note, my screen name Knothole is a reference to the location Sonic and his friends live at. Now THERES an underrated cartoon you should review. Anyway, the sequel to Nimh from 1998 was complete garbage and theres rumor circulating on the net that Don Bluth intends to make a real theatrical version in 2011. So I must say this was a decent collection and I might purchase Return to Oz since I forgot how intensely scary it was. Talk about a mindfuck. Great job as always Doug. Cant wait for Howard the Duck.

That...that was pure win.
written by tri-sapphire , November 04, 2008
This is definitely my favorite Nostalgia Critic to date. It was so good that I actually registered an account so I could comment on it smilies/shocked.gif.

You had me at number 11 with Rescuers Down Under. Phenomenal indeed.

The Tiny Toons movie...damn. That was indeed a lost treasure, and I also have the VHS somewhere around. I can still remember most of those scenes shown, which goes to show how memorable that film was.

I need to watch number The Rocketeer again. I'm certain I missed most of the darker themes as a naive kid.

For some reason the animation in Prince of Egypt looks even more amazing now than it did before smilies/cheesy.gif. And I can still remember the main theme song.

I'm sorry to say that I never saw number 7, 5, 4, or 3.

And is it just me, or was the Iron Giant a tad more recent than the rest on the list?

Afraid that I can't remember much from the Batman movie smilies/sad.gif. I do remember that villain however, so I must have seen it at one time.

And Number 1: The Secret of NIMH. You sir. You win the internets. I'm now going to reread the book and re-watch that incredible movie once more, and I suggest everyone else do the same.

Minus #9,#7, and #5, I heard of these movies, even owning a few of them.

'If kids don't like being scare, they wouldn't like to go out for Halloween or watch HSM' Classic.

I never did knew that the person that the score for #8 also did Wicked.

Good list. My only complaint is that you didn't put 'The great Mouse Detective' on the list. It was as Underrated as Resucers: down Under(though minus the sceanes in the Big Ben, the animation wasn't all that great. Not bad, but not epic either.).

Great list, although I'm not too fond of Return to Oz and Babe: Pig in the City. But Batman , How I Spent My Vacation and The Prince of Egypt all deserved places on the list. I also think Wakko's Wish should have been in there, but it's only nine years old, so I understand why it's not.

Still, very entertaining and well put-together video and I didn't even notice much change in your voice.

What are you doing in my childhood? Aside from Tiny Toons (and Phantasm and Nimh), you're batting 1.000! Seriously, you're one Olly Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss away from writing a full list. Actually, the plot to Olly Hopnoodle (yes, I'm not making that name up) is pretty identical to the one from the Tiny Toons, in terms of pitch. It's a yearly journey to a magical place that consists of the car trip from hell. As a bonus, it's the sequel to A Christmas Story, including Ralphie and his entire obnoxious, loud, hilarious family.

Well done.

there's an Iron Giant in Fallout 3.. and it was by far the best part of a great game.. it was even better that he was talking about crushing chinese commie bastards.

I hated Return to Oz.. maybe because I didn't like being scared as a kid, and it scared the shit out of me.

I totally agree with number 1. Secret of Nimh was one of my favorite movies as a kid, mainly because I read the book in school, and that struck a chord with me. I'm ashamed that I had forgotten about it, but with you reminding me, I'll have to remember to share it with my children.

Don't care about Howard the Duck, but I love the show, so I'll be here. Wow me Doug, make me care about that anthropomorphic freak. smilies/smiley.gif

I am so happy to see The Secret of NIMH at the top of that list. Mask of the Phantasm and Prince of Egypt were nice to see on the list, too. But, for some reason, I was expecting Dark Crystal to be in there somewhere and was sort of depressed when it didn't get mentioned. Maybe my nostalgia of the movie is blinding me from the reality of that certain movie?

I tried showing them to younger friends who didn't grow up watching these movies and they were kinda "eh" on them sadly. Ah well.) I'd forgotten all about Explorers! That was a pretty cool film, I'll have to check it out again. And yes, completely with you on Secret of NIMH for #1, that film kicks serious ass. To say that Return to Oz is so different from The Wizard of Oz is an understatement. The reason that Return to Oz is successful in many aspects, is the fact that is based off two of L. Frank Baum's books. It's a combination of the first and second books in the series, The Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz. If you watch the movie, they even tell you that in the credits. I hate the original Oz movie with Judy Garland, simply because they took some of the best parts of the first book out of the movie, and left it very bland. In fact, it has barely any semblance to the book at all. If you like the imaginative qualities of Return to Oz, you should go back and read the books. From the way you talked about it, you seemed to think that the movie was a standalone interpretation, which was highly creative. While the crew of the movie did a really great job and provided wonderful visuals and effects, the ideas come from the source material. Even though they combined two books for one movie, there are sections that are pretty much verbatim.

About "MOTP" and "Iron Giant"
written by GuyWhoIsAnonymous , November 04, 2008
Actually, "Batman: MOTP" came out around the time "Batman Returns" come out during Christmas 1993 ("Returns" was a '92 release). Meaning "Forever" came out about a year and a half later. But, "Phantasm" got its VHS release in April 1994, meaning their releases were a year apart almost.

You might have wanted to add that Cartoon Network still does 24 hour "Iron Giant" marathons and that it has been played on Turner Classic Movies a few times.

Great video! Can't wait for the next one!

11. I remember this movie when I was a kid. Used to watch it all the time. Don't own a copy now, I might as well get it on DVD.
10. I did see it...once. I saw it again in bits and pieces, and the only thing I remember is Plucky's Vacation, notably when they're in that long tunnel holding their breath while making a wish...or somethign.
9. Didn't like it that much, but my dad loves it.
8. The Prince of Egypt is a great movie, I just haven't seen it in a while.
7. My dad also enjoyed Explorers, and was lucky enough to score a DVD copy. I didn't think too much of it, especially later in the film.
6. I also enjoyed this movie. Not a fan of the DVD cover re-design.
5. This movie is awesome, especially in the soundtrack department. It's a reminder to me of why the 80s was great for sci-fi. LOLed at "This is crack."
4. This is the first film on the list I haven't seen. Does actually look good, maybe I'll rent it someday.
3. Didn't see this either. Did see the first one, but I just dismissed the sequel, wasn't interested.
2. I actually DID see this in theaters. Bought it along with the rest of the Animated Series on DVD.
1. I saw this once, don't remember it that well. Not really a fan of Don Bluth's work like when I was a kid though.

Kid Sized
written by MikeRyu , November 04, 2008
Great top 11. It reminded me of something. Back then kids adventure movies would actually shrink the adventure down to kid size. Rather than seeming condescending I think it makes the experience more relatable to children. In Indiana Jones he would travel all around the world trying to defeat the Nazis whereas in The Goonies they don't even leave their own town. I think it taps into a child's imagination more.

Holy hell, Rescuers Down Under!! I loved that movie when I was a kid. Oh, I also remember Prince of Egypt. My mum got really pissed at me aunt for taking me to see that 'cause she was afraid it would make me want to be christian because she assumed it was one of those Vegitales type propaganda films where they get kids to watch a cartoon to turn to religion. I really don't remember it pushing Christianity that much.. The Iron Giant was overlooked? Really? I remember critics raving about it and I know it was recently named one of the best animations ever.. I first saw Return to Oz when I was like 3. It actually scared the crap out of me, which was awesome cuz' I lurve being scared. My eternal quest in movies is to find 5 movies that literally terrify me, and will stay that way. So far I have only found one. I shall once again say 'Holy Hell!' Mask of the Phantasm! First batman movie I ever saw, and I still love it. I'm also shocked with #1. It was also named one of the best animated films ever, and I know when I grew up everyone I knew absolutely loved it and its another one I still absolutely love. Don Bluth was great... in the 1980s. Why did the 1990s Bluth films have to happen? Haven't seen the others though.

Best Top 11 Yet!
written by Feesh322 , November 04, 2008
Such a great list! It's cool to see The Rescuers Down Under again. Yeah, every time I brought that movie up to talk about how great it was, people were like, "What?" I thought no one saw it but me!

LOVE Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, it's me personal favorite Batman movie (The Dark Knight is superior, I think, but I still like Phantasm more). And The Secret of NIMH for number 1? No movie deserves it more than that one. Seriously, when I saw it for the first time (just a year ago), I was like, "WHY THE HECK HAVEN'T I HEARD OF THIS??" It really is that good. Just beautiful.

I've never seen Explorers, Flight of the Navigator or Return to Oz. I'll definitely have to check them out sometime. And I bemoan the fact that the Tiny Toons movie hasn't gotten a DVD release. :-( Thank you for such a great list! smilies/smiley.gif

Ah, Prince of Egypt. When Dreamworks made decent animated movies instead of popculture spouting shitfests...

Also the Rocketeer was based on a comic book. You're probably unhappy to hear that Jennifer Connolly's character, in the original comic, was a glamour model who often posed in swimsuits and in the nude (based on Bettie Page) before being changed into an actress for the Disney movie. Considering your fawning over Connolly, I'm sure you would have preferred them to keep that aspect intact =P

Glad to see a NC video that isn't about a shitty movie for a change.

Glad to see what was on that list. I LOVED Prince of Egypt. It managed to make a Bible story truly exciting and interesting.

Where is Enemy Mine?
written by Kwizatz , November 04, 2008
I saw return to Oz in a theater it was awesome, I though it was the first one since I was a kid and by that time the original was already old... later I saw the original and still think it sucks in comparison, the best one though, is the third one, the one by the James, Wizard of Oz 3: Dorothy Goes to Hell. smilies/grin.gif

I also saw Explorers, thought the ending really sucked, I was expecting something meaningful in the end, not a punchline.

Where is Enemy Mine?

Also, "There are things we forget about, things we don't know about and things we forget about", was that intentional? smilies/shocked.gif

I remember Rescuers: DU ads on old Disney videos. I saw the Tiny Toons movie and the Batman movie on Cartoon Network. Never heard of Rocketeers, Return to Oz, or Explorers. I saw the Prince of Egypt and Iron Giant in theaters and have them on tape. Everyone I know knows about Iron Giant. I learend about FotN in Disney World because they have a voice exhibit using some script from it. I much prefered the original Babe as opposed to the sequel.
I don't know why you say that you sounded sick, you sound fine to me.
I LOVED NIMH! Everyone I knows loves it! Afterwards, whenever we heard anything about the real NIMH, we'd always hate them.
Protip: Anything by Don Bluth is automatically awesome.

I saw The Explorers, but I was way too young to remember it at all...
My friends've been preaching Iron Giant and Prince of Egypt to me for a really long time, and now I figure would be as good a time as any to check them out. The same for Mask of the Phantasm...

I'm so amazed at how you can take on the serious note when need be, while still maintaining your signature hilarity. Truely, you are an actor and entertainer worth your salt.

Could not been happier with the end result. The Secret of NIMH was fantastic! ...but, what about the fantastic wonderful tale *irony* of "Secret of NIMH 2". I hope to see a review about that. "Secret of NIMH 2" is really the movie that I hoped I never saw... but I did. I want that 1.3 hour back.

Finally go around to registering, cause I have to say I loved this review. Sad to say there were roughly 5 of those films I hadn't seen and 3 out of those that I'd never even heard of until this review. The Iron Giant really is a great film and it's rising popularity I can see since I remember some month earlier this year or late last year where it played every weekend on Cartoon Network.

Anyway, the Secrets of Nimh was a great piece. One of my favorite movies as a kid and I had a lot of mix of emotion when I saw it then and even when I saw it somewhat recently. I've totally gotta go check out Mask of the Phantasm though.

Keep up the great work.

Ahhh...Takes Me Back, Moreso Than Usual...
written by Erinaceus , November 04, 2008
First Explorers: Strangely enough, to me, that film I remember less for Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix, but more for an obscure piece of trivia. That trivia being that the male alien was voiced by none other than Robert Picardo, who you all would probably know better as The Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager, and currently as Richard Woolsey on Stargate Atlantis.

Next: The Iron Giant. It's a favorite of mine. I like Vin Diesel when he's in roles where he doesn't talk too much. And the Giant was his best.

Third: Flight of the Navigator. Man, it has been sooooo long since I last saw that one, usually if a gem like that hasn't since seen the light of day, it never will again. For shame. On another note, I had no idea the robot was voiced by Paul "Pee Wee" Reubens.smilies/cheesy.gif Probably would've recognized him had I seen the movie since childhood.

Last: Batman. I've caught it in HBO recently, and watch it every chance I get. It really is an excellent film, perhaps even better than Tim Burton's efforts. Though I had no idea it had a theatrical release. I sort of pegged it as a straight-to-video movie. The fault's really on the executives, though, and not so much moviegoers. The should have known better than to pit a franchise against itself, of course the live-action film's gonna overshadow the cartoon! I actually liked Batman Forever when it first came out (shut up, I know...I was a kid who didn't know any better). I was a Batman: TAS fan, but had absolutely no clue that the the animated film even existed!

Cats Don't Dance
written by CyrusShadowBlade , November 04, 2008
I'm surprised the NC and no one else mentioned the movie Cats Don't Dance. This was a great movie with likable characters, great animation, great songs and an overall fun story.

If none of you have seen this you should definitely check it out. It was one of my favorite movies as a kid, and it still holds up.

I'm so happy you mentioned some of the great traditionally animated films - true underappreciated classics. I also agree that Babe: Pig in the City is very different and, like Rescuers Down Under and Return to Oz, bigger and bolder than the first movie.
Must check out all those other films, they seem interesting. smilies/cool.gif

Wonderful!
written by Badly Drawn Manchild , November 04, 2008
I remember being completely obsessed with Flight of the Navigator as a kid, and I was really surprised to see it made the list. It brought all those memories flooding back.

Also, a note on Return to Oz; Doug probably already knows this, but it wasn't the only sequel to Wizard of Oz that was made. There was an animated sequel made which was more in style with the original (ie. more of a whimsical musical) called "Journey Back to Oz". What's interesting about it is that Dorothy is voiced by Liza Minelli, Judy Garland's daughter (must have been odd trying to do an impression of her own mother!). Still, I'm glad Return to Oz made it onto the list because it does indeed rock.

Overall, I'd say that was probably your best Top 11 yet, with fantastic entries and a well-deserved #1.

OH. MY. GOD.
written by thecosmicfly , November 04, 2008
I can't believe how many old classics you were listing. I've seen virtually every film you've listed. Infact these were pretty much the bulk of my childhood. Honestly, I was having a fit when you started mentioning films like Return to Oz, The Rocketeer and Iron Giant. So many great and indeed underrated films. This generations youth sucks ass compared to ours. We get amazing movies like these while they're tricked into thinking Ben 10 or High School Musical is quality entertainment. -_- The video was kind of short on jokes, but I'm glad for that. You gave a well delivered performance on how and why these films deserve recognition. Thats all that was really needed. Although the RtO reaction and happy/sad face was hilarious. 5/5

Oh and one more thing, OH MAH GAWD HOWARD THE DUCK BEING REVIEWED NEXT I'M GONNA SHIT MAH BRICKS NAO!

I actually do remember most of them, and I guess the reason why "Prince of Egypt" isn't well remembered anymore is because it was done by DreamWorks Animation and I think audiences decided to watch "Shrek the Third" multiple times on DVD instead of that film.

BTW, Where's "Mr. Bug Goes to Town"?
