I completely agree with Batman taking the number 1 slot (although I did expect Animaniacs to take the top, it still got #2 so I'm happy). As always, awesome work NC!!! Looking forward to KAZAAM!

Also, thanks for reminding me about Peter Pan and the Pirates. I loved that show.

I love half of this list on so many levels. I didn't grow up with half of it, but pretty anything after 1992 was loved (born in '86).

I was really into the TMNT original cartoon, it wasn't funny. I dressed up as all four turtles in four consecutive years for Halloween.

The only thing that killed X-Men was FOX changing its timeslot so often.

Animaniacs was golden and the first nostalgia dvd set (volume 1) that I bought. I loved this show.

Batman was pure gold. Even the episode when he was recovery in the girl's basement was good... and that's considered the worst episode.

The Tick... I still don't know why it's not on TV anymore.

The only thing missing is Gargoyles, Freakazoid, and Tiny Toons Adventures, but I'll deal with it. It's his list, not mine.

Awesome list. I always did love the old Batman show. Batman Beyond was pretty good too, but it could never touch the Animated Series.
I was also very surprised/happy to see the Tick on the list. I had completely forgotten about that awesome show.

Great movie as usual, but this comment won't apply to this movie alone.
All of your movies are great educational tools for people of my age, who grew up in the 90's. It is a great look at a different generation, and to me, it is very entertaining to watch parallels between the two. I don't know, your videos are just very... Interesting to me.
Loved it, A+.

Go comic book cartoons!
written by tim333 , September 29, 2008
Wow, 4 out of the top 5 cartoons were based on comic books. I don't know if they explained "Spoon" in the cartoon, but in the comic, Tick was trying to come up with a "fearsome battle cry" and settled on the first thing he saw. Man, the Tick is a great sendup of superheroes.

I approve of this list. I knew and liked nearly all of these cartoons; the only one I hadn't seen was the Peter Pan cartoon.

With a topic as huge and broad as Nostalgic Animated Shows, you're bound to neglect a couple of favorites which could fill another Top 11 list (Top 22 Nostalgic Animated Shows?). Everyone had their favorites regardless of age, gender, genre etc.

However, I think you really nailed some of those choices. While watching, I was wondering where "Batman: The Animated Series" was gonna pop up so I'm not entirely surprised it was #1 (for some reason, I thought it was gonna be "The Simpsons". Hey, it started in the late 80's/early 90's and a lot of us kids grew up watching it, after all! smilies/tongue.gif ). But it's a very worthy #1.

There were a few welcome surprises that I didn't expect to see on the list which were pretty fun (ie. "Ren and Stimpy", "The Tick" etc.).

As soon as you mentioned "Duck Tales", I was totally waiting for a "Duck Tales! Woohoo!" related joke...and it was totally there. smilies/cheesy.gif

To wrap this up, another fun list. Good to make us all feel warm, fuzzy and (most of all) nostalgic. smilies/smiley.gif

Another great list! Of course anyone else's list would be different from yours, but still. You picked a lot of greats.

Personally I don't remember Peter Pan and the Pirates, so I would sooner replace it with the OTHER great Transformers cartoon, Beast Wars.

Also I didn't think Duck Tales, though good, was Disney Afternoon's best. I've always been a fan of Darkwing Duck.

Batman TAS is the perfect #1 choice, but I still think it was very heavily edited, but I kinda prefer that over the really dark dark comics. Great choice for #1 spot,

I would have to add Exosquad on list. I think that show was revolutionary for it's time. This show really showed great characters and gave the feeling on the plight of their war. That show was dark and I remember it.

I don't know about Steven staying with the producing part, but the random rant about Saving Private Ryan made me lol so hard.

And yes, most of us know Mark Hamill was the Joker. Yes, he was badass. Yes, we loved these shows. Yes, we had a kickass childhood with TV. No, I don't know how we survived the movies from Disney. 5/5!

Great list, and awesome ending.

Though I have to say, I would've the Disney Afternoon as a whole, not just Ducktales. Gummi Bears, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, TaleSpin, and Darkwing Duck were all great in their own rights.

And if Batman was number 1, Gargoyles should have been number 2. Gargoyles nailed everything that Batman got right. It was dark, the characters were easy to relate to, the subject matter was never dummed-down, the animation was great, and the stories were really deep and complex. It established a whole freakin mythos in just 2 seasons. Gargoyles was a masterpiece and the best thing to ever come out of Disney.

Uncle Phil was Shredder??! BRAIN BLAST!!

Hmm...well, I remember most of these shows growing up, but I wasn't a huge fan of all of them. I think I was too young to appreciate Xmen, and I blame my gender on having no recollection of G.I. Joe and Transformers (although I did dig the TMNT cereal). I agree with the number one spot, but I think Ren & Stimpy should've ranked higher.

Or maybe that's just me - my cartoons back in the day consisted 95% of Nicktoons.

Saw most of these coming of course (would've been sad if Batman wasn't number one), except for Peter Pan... And I am so so glad I'm not the only one who remembers that show. Bummed there's no DVD sets of it, but I don't recall it ever having much of a following. Great show though. They even had an episode about how the Croc got his clock and it ended with Peter cutting off Hook's hand, which is something I never thought a cartoon would cover.

This was really interesting to watch. I was born at the end of the 80s so I grew up with both 80s and 90s TV shows, and it's really interesting to see some of these shows listed here. I haven't watched a few of them actually, since I am not from the States so some never got imported and translated. I do agree with the arrangement though - I loved the Batman cartoon. Hell, i downloaded it last year just to see if it still feels the same - and it DOES. It's dark, it's interesting and it's fun to watch. In my eyes - it hasn't aged a bit.

Good video!
written by Badly Drawn Manchild , September 30, 2008
First of all, great use of Fantasia in there.smilies/grin.gif

Second, not a bad selection. Kudos for including Ghostbusters, Peter Pan and Animaniacs. Some of the entries held little nostalgic value for me though, such as G.I. Joe and Transformers, neither of which I particularly cared for as a kid (I'm not sure GI Joe was even shown in the UK, though I distinctly recall the toys been sold here).

It's funny you should joke about TMNT being a satire of a concept, because that's what it pretty much was to begin with. From what I understand, original comic creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird (to whose ideas the original cartoon bore very little resemblance) created TMNT as a send-up/amalgamation of all the popular comic trends at the time. They never really expected the concept to take off like it did!

Personally, I reckon Gargoyles should have been on the list. I'd be inclined to argue that it's stood the test of time a lot better than many of the shows on this list (almost as well as Batman and Animaniacs have, in my opinion).

Still, I suppose we each have our favourites; if I had done this list, I probably would've filled it with British classics like DangerMouse and Count Duckula.smilies/tongue.gif

I definitely agree with the number 1 show though. I recently watched Batman again on DVD, and this time nostalgia doesn't lie; it really is the best cartoon ever made, and I'm so glad it made #1.

I must admit. Knowing your love for Animaniacs (you used them in so many other videos) I expected them to get the highest rank. But #2 isn't bad, and I totally agree on Batman being the best animated show (of course, I'm a huge batman-fan...).

I agree on the rest of the list too, except I would have put the Tick higher and put the spider-man show in there somewhere.

Good job, and I'm looking forward to your showdown with AVGN.

*On Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles*: "I mean, it doesn't even sound real! It sounds like a satire of another idea."

It WAS a satire. Well, not the cartoon series, but the comic book it was based on. The comic book skewered the whole "dark, bloody" aspect of 80s comics that was becoming popular by taking a patently ridiculous idea (Turtles mutated into teenaged humanoids and taught ninjutsu) and playing it with the fervor of a serious, grim series. It was highly violent, but that was the point. Whoever took the comic books and turned it into the cartoon either did not have any idea of what the comic book was about, or knew how to spin anything into gold. So they were either really stupid or insanely smart, take your pick.

X-Men/Batman
written by Cferra , September 30, 2008
So glad X-Men and Batman made the list. Why? Because both led to more Marvel toons coming from X-Men like Spidey, Hulk, FF, Iron Man, Silver Surfer and Avengers. On the DC side, the Timm Batman toon soon gave us Superman, Batman Beyond and Justice League all in that same style. Pretty innovative weren't they?

And yeah Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird made Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the mid 1980s to be a spoof of mutants from X-Men and ninjas from Daredevil comics. I'm also glad Transformers made the list!

Couldn't agree more. I sat every saturdaymorning ready for Batman to begin, that show had it all and like you said, it took us serious. I'll never forget that intro and the deep storyline it had. Damn, thinking about it makes me wanting to see it all over again. Still a bit of a mystery that I was (and still am) a big Star Wars fan, but never found out it was Mark Hamill until the show stopped running.

Furthermore I think you captured the list really good. The Tick was a show I loved because of it's fantastic comedy and it's overal weirdness (I'll never forget the episode where the Tick fight Dino Dan or something like that, and he needs to wrestle with a humongeous tonguesmilies/grin.gif). I think they explained the Spoon thing because he wanted a battle cry that represented him. So he looked into a spoon and saw his own reflection, thus: SPOON!!!

Also the Animaniacs were awesome, sometimes I still talk about Pinky and the Brain with my friends(pretty geeky since we are over 20). And beyond that, Transformers, TMNT and X-Men were the real action show you sat down for. And as for Ren and Stimpy; Let's say that when I saw that show a few years ago, I started doubting if it wasn't the reason why many of us are so crazy in later lifesmilies/grin.gif
The only show I never saw was GI JOE, seeing as it was no longer broadcast when I was born (Netherlands). Thankfully I did see the rest of the awesome shows, only thing I would replace with GI JOE (seeing as I never saw it) would be Bikermice from Mars. That show was pretty good, at least in the beginning, in the end it didn't take its audience serious.

I'd have to disagree with the Ren and Stimpy nomination. I watched one episode of the show as a kid and it scared the ever loving shit out of me. I hated it and never wanted to see it again.

Otherwise, a great list. I especially love that Batman, my fave series from childhood was number one. I remember LOVOING the Riddler episodes as a kid. I kinda wish the NC had given a shout out or honorable mention at least to the Beyond series. That one was ALMOST as good as the original series, by just a sliver.

I remember most of these shows as a kid, albeit a bit too young to fully appreciate them. Now that I'm older I can, as you have rekindled my hankering for Animaniacs and Batman: The Animated Series. Must also check out Fox's Peter Pan & the Pirates again. That was pretty good, and creepy in parts, particularly the one where Tinkerbell possesses the Croc. The reason Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sounds like a parody is because it is... Atleast it was aoriginally a comic book written for adults that was a satire of other comics at the time. When it became a tv show it became the very thing the original creators were making a parody of. It was still a great show.

This is really such a good list that I don't have anything to add to it.

I was thinking of either Smurfs or Gargoyles, but Gargoyles really was more along the lines of Batman: TAS and Smurfs was just too annoying.

I hated Ducktales, though. I never understood the fascination.

TMNT has been inching its way back toward its dark and gritty origins, but its still can't completely shake the kiddie style plots and that STUPID, STUPID, STUPID surfer voice for Michelangelo. Michelangelo the Turtle embodied everything that was wrong with Denver the Last Dinosaur (which was a lot).

well of course everybody has his own list...so I must say I wished GARGOYLE should have been in here, because it felt like BATMAN, with GARGOYLES !!!

but well the X MEN are here, the animaniacs, so it's hard to argue with that list

except maybe for this Peter Pan / Gi Joe Entry...

WHy not Thundercats ? or other manga...but it depends if you count DRAGON BALL Z as nostalgic because they came lately in USA, whereas they are very old around France... so Dragon Ball Z should have been on the list...

on and Rocco's Modern Life was a good one too...

Where's Gargoyles?
written by ThatGuyWithTheGlasses , September 30, 2008
I get the feeling a lot of people are going to ask "Where's Gargoyles?" While I remember seeing a few episodes and liking it, the idea behind this list was to talk about the shows that either started something fresh and new or perfected an existing fresh and new idea. Gargoyles, while good, I always felt was Disney's answer to Batman. I know it wasn't a rip off or anything, but it seemed like it was trying to do what Batman was trying to do, and since Batman did it already and better, I felt it was better to keep that on there. I do remember it being a good show though, maybe if there was a 'Top 22' list, it would make it up there. Again, I like this show, I just didn't think it really did anything new or changed anything like these other shows did.

So you're saying this was a list of what you felt were the most important cartoons, as well as what you felt were the best? Can't fault that logic.

Thing I've noticed about Gargoyles is that it seems to have more of a cult following than the shows highlighted in the list, if you get what I mean. Most people I've spoken to haven't heard of it. Even Disney themselves seem to forget it exists half the time (apparently aside from when they raise their licensing fees, which is why, last I heard, series creator Greg Weisman has to find a new publisher for the new Gargoyles comics he was writing).

So maybe it's placing is more appropriate in the "Forgotten Nostalgic Classics" video. Unless, of course, you're saving that for the REALLY obscure stuff, which should make for interesting viewing. smilies/smiley.gif

Look, I can understand why Ren and Stimpy was up there, but the same things that made it memorable are the same reasons I really hated watching it. Even as a kid. I still think it's overrated - and a lot of shows did try to copy it without understanding it, so you had (and still do have!) a rash of ugly cartoons trying to sustain themselves on juvenile humor and nothing else. Up to and including the recent Ren and Stimpy revival. Even still, I can still appreciate why people like it - it was a truly rebellious cartoon. But it never quite gelled with me as an entertaining cartoon.

But enough of that, I can't believe someone besides me was watching Peter Pan and the Pirates. Are you sure it should be on this list? I loved that show and all, but I don't think that many people actually saw it. Maybe you need to make a Top 11 Underappreciated Cartoons List? I never, to this day, realized that was Tim Curry as Hook. Is there nothing that man cannot make awesome? ...wait, don't answer that.

I'm down with Batman in the top spot. Now, here was a show that could in fact give me nightmares, and actually did a few times (dear god, did you see what he did to Bane!? NIGHTMARE FUEL!), and I still wanted to watch it every chance I could. I picked up the DVDs as an adult and found myself just as caught up in it now as I was then, except now I was able to pick up on the other subtleties of the show. That's actually one of the reasons I think it works so well - it seems aware of what works for kids and what works for adults. And it's kind of nice looking back on it now and seeing where this one show also influenced the rest of the franchise - for starters, Mr. Freeze would never have been in Batman and Robin if this show hadn't transformed him from a boring guy with a freeze ray into a powerful tragic figure that knows how to do some really clever stuff with a freeze ray. And Harley Quinn. Just...Harley Quinn.

The only downside? A lot of cartoons ripping off the edgy style and not understanding why it worked. I think one of the worst offenders is the current Legion of Superheroes cartoon. The show probably isn't half bad, but the really bad attempt at ripping of the Bruce Timm art style is mind-numbing to look at.

And NC? Do not, ever, diss SPOOOOOOOON.

Blasphemy!
written by thatfunkedupgeek , September 30, 2008
I call blasphemy and Shenanigans, Guy. True, your list has some of the best nostalgia Animated shows, but it is severely lacking in one aspect: where is Gargoyles? Gargoyles is one of the best American animated TV shows in like the past 20-30 some-odd years of American animation. It should have been right behind Batman, if not number 1 itself.

Shenanigans, my good sir. Shenanigans

Eh..let them ask about Gargoyles. It was a good show. I saw it when I could after Cross Country practice back in the day. You're right that it was Disney's version of Batman. Moreso than Darkwing Duck. I also found it funny that Star Trek: The Next Generation actors were used on the show, too. Then came Star Trek Generations and all that good stuff.

The list of shows did start off something fresh and bold. You don't need to justify the list to me or anyone else on the site. It's your show. We're just helping ya pay the rent. I think I said something in the forums to the effect that X-Men and Batman deserved to be on the list not just for what they represent, it's more that they helped to spawn Marvel's animated presense on the small screen in the 90s with Spider-Man, Hulk, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Silver Surfer and Avengers. Likewise, Batman started a whole conjoined animated universe with Superman, Batman Beyond, Zeta and Justice League. All helmed by the same guy that brought us Batman: The Animated Series, Bruce Timm.

The point I'm trying to make is that while Gargoyles is awesome, it's your call as to what goes on the list. Every one of those shows deserves a spot on it. Though...I've never seen Peter Pan. Eh can't win 'em all can we? Again, good list. Gargoyles is fun and all but it didn't start a revolution like the other shows on the list. It was good and memorable. But, in the end, you decide what goes in and what doesn't.

I never grew up with Batman, X-men, GI Joe or Tick (actually, I have never even heard about that), so I can't consider them nostalgic. My most nostalgic cartoon would probably be Spiderman (the 1994 version). It was the only show that I just had to see every saturday, and record it. I also remember watching Turtles, He-man, Ducktales and of course Looney Tunes. Which takes me to my other question: Why was Looney Tunes excluded from the list? You mentioned how animaniacs was the only one to carry the spirit of Looney Tunes (making it evident that you have watched it), but didn't put that on the list. Well, no matters, your list not mine.

Wow, I can't believe you stuck derivitive, toy-hawking crap like GI Joe and Transformers alongside truly magnificent works of art like Ren & Stimpy, Animaniacs and Batman.

I was surprised by your choice of Batman as #1 but you made some really good points. It was the only super-hero show where you were meant to see the villains as human beings. The voice-acting was amazing and the entire look and feel were unlike anything I'd ever seen at the time.

I just thought Ren & Stimpy should have been much higher on the list -- the outlandish animation and csense of humor made it the "avant garde" children's cartoon. Sure they made butt jokes, but those were some damn original butt jokes!

Oh yeah, nice job with the Top 11 list, it's got everyone arguing!

Not sure if someone mentioned this but TMNT was created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman as a comic book. It saught to lampoon the popular comics at the time including Daredevil and New Mutants. It is said that the boy who drops the turtles is actually Daredevil as a child, and the same stuff which mutated him also mutated the turtles.

I never really liked Ren & Stimpy. Yeah, I watched it and yeah I laughed at it, but I would have replaced it with Thundercats, Freakazoid, or Beavis & Butthead.

For one thing, I dislike the creator of Ren & Stimpy. I find him rather moronic. Once stating that "10-year-olds can draw Family Guy." Ren & Stimpy isn't exactly a masterpiece itself... in fact it looks like a four-year-old drew it up while vomiting.
Just my personal opinion.

How, sir, HOW do you omit Gargoyles?!?! I would EASILY put it up there with Batman, for the same reasons. This show dealt with Cloning, Genocide, Racsim (Or I guess Speciesism?), gun violence, magic, genetic experimentation, and a slight amount of bestiality. But seriously, it was THE most bad ass Disney show ever, how could you not rank it?!

i have a hard time deciding which show i like more, animaniacs or tiny toons, sure tt was remembering well but had its own originality, animaniacs was silly, funny and great, pinky and the brain was one of my greatest highlights as a child, i recently got all the episodes of tinytoons, after about 10 years, i still love it, i will have to see what i think of animaniacs (but i remember seeing it more later than tiny toons) batman is the GREATEST animated series (if you like batman and don't mind as much humor as spiderman or xmen did)

I wish I lived through more of th nineties..
written by Rac_Rules , September 30, 2008
MAN I wish I could remember more of the nineties! smilies/angry.gif I had to live most of my remembered childhood watching stuff like Teen Titans in which the villain can't even be homicidal, much less wield a real gun. Parents are to darn sensitive these days! IF YOUR KID IS SCARED BY IT, DON'T WATCH IT!I don't think I'd like Ren and Stimpy at all, though. Call me conservative, but constant potty humor and obnoxious characters is just not my style. Actually, my dad still has a grudge against Nick because of that show. He didn't stop hating me watching Nick till I was like, 11. Buuuut, Batman. Though I'm not crazy about the actual Batman character (He was always really boring to me as Bruce Wayne and when he was Batman he always sounded like he lost his voice), but the villains made that show awesome! I'm a big Harley Quinn, Joker, and Poison Ivy fan. To bad BAR killed her.

written by staplerinjelle , September 30, 2008
Brilliant video. I remember every single cartoon on your list, even the Peter Pan one (I caught it in the morning before going to school occasionally) and recalling them only makes me pity the current youngest generation and the crap on TV that they're growing up with. You really hit it when you noted that most of these shows were written equally for adults, which was why they were so smart, risk-taking, and enduring. That's a trend that needs to come back; we need to stop selling kids short. (And there are so many cartoons now coming back to me: Tiny Toon Adventures, Rocko's Modern Life, the original Doug, Freakazoid. We were spoiled.)

Animaniacs was and still is my favorite cartoon. I own the DVD sets and they're still as hilarious as always. And there was the added bonus that the Warner Brothers and their sister Dot helped me pass so many tests in elementary school and junior high. The States & Capitals song, the Presidents song, the Countries of the World song...all insanely catchy and entertaining while educating. What a gift.

And Mark Hamill is awesome as the animated Joker...such a great laugh. *shudder*
