the brokeback mountain bit never fails to make me laugh
I'm one of the few that actually liked this movie. It's cheesy early 90's fun that obviously doesn't do the game justice....but in reality some elements of the game wouldn't work like they do in the game anyways.
Either way, this review is hilarious.

You forgot to mention the Bob-omb with the Reebok symbol on it's foot.
Mario sends the Bob-omb after Koopa, but it falls into an grating, only to walk across the street, UP A PIPE, and along the underside of a walkway where Koopa is standing. Just before it blows up, you can see the shameless product placement that is...Reebok.
To this day, I have worn Nikes.

I barely remember this movie, I first saw it when I was eight years old on Pay per view and there are only two scenes I remember from this movie. the begining(I think) where Mario and Luigi are making pizza in a truck... or something, and the scene here mario dances with Queen Latifa.... Yeah.

Mario and Luigi arent father and son. Luigi say " Mario raised me. He´s like a mom, father......." all that crap.
I'm surprised you actually misconstrued the idea that Mario was Luigi's Dad. Luigi was merely saying Mario was LIKE a father to him, not actually saying he WAS his father. Thats just stupid. And it is logical that both of their last names are MARIO hence the title MARIO BROTHERS, as in the surname MARIO. Its stupid, but it's just to avoid a plot hole, which did fail in every other aspect of this film.
And the goombas, you are correct. they are the complete polar opposite of what they were in the game: large head small body. the movie, tiny head huge body. wtf.

I looked this movie up on Wikipedia (which is ALWAYS accurate, lol), and it seems that the directors were also the creators of Max Headroom. Also, Look at Koopa's hairstyle. Coincidence?

This movie, more than any other video game adaptation, is a perfect example of the first mistake video game movies make: Going so far from the original plot, you can't even recognize it anymore. Great video and reminder of one of biggest disapointments in game based movies. I was not really SMB liking type so from that reason alone I didn't like from it. Not that plot was taken as far as possible from game but simply becouse I didn't like from SMB.
I always thought that Mario and Luigi were brothers but Mario raided Luigi after they parents died. So rising in this case didn't mean that mario would be Luigi's father, not at all.
Also they last names make sense becouse its called Super MARIO Bros (in other words, super mario brothers).

The strange thing is that back then, everybody but me seemed to like that piece of crap. I read good reviews and positive articles in all those videogame magazines, songs from the soundtrack (something from "Roxette" as far as i remember) were in the upper charts for weeks and advertisement for the movie was everywhere. I think this movie gets a lot of undeserved flack. I liked it, but maybe that's because outside of Super Mario World I never played, nor cared for, anyone of the games. How I actually saw the movie and came to own it was a bit of a fluke (my family just rented it one day), so that explains why I saw it to begin with despite not particularly liking the game(s) - or, at least, being indifferent to them.
Anyway, while it probably was a bad decision to make the movie live-action, the fact remains that for whatever reason the studio heads decided to do that. And with that in mind, the writers did a fairly commendably job of turning something blatantly unfilmable in live-action, and making it filmable by crafting a fairly unique story to justify the changes made. Also complaining about the ethnicity of the actors supposedly playing Italians is a bit weird, considering Bob Hoskins especially is known for playing American characters with Brooklyn accents (I never saw anyone complaing about his Eddie Valiant in Who Framed Roger Rabbit).
Oh and I hope you were just joking about the incest angle, because it's pretty obvious that Luigi and Mario ARE brothers, but the age discrepancy between them coupled with Luigi saying Mario is like a father to him, means their parents either left or died when Luigi was young and so Mario (likely a teenager at the time) raised his little brother.
Still and all, very amusing video, as all of your videos are. I just had a bunch of stuff I wanted to say about this particular movie and the criticisms lobbied against it.

One of the best reviews on this site! Always enjoy watching this, from Dennis Hoppers' repetitive "Ba-Bomb-Monkey!" to the revealation of the Mario Bros. imaginatively-named surnames. All of this review was spot-on! Excellent stuff from our friend The Nostalgic Critic.
I really hated this film as it was so different from the game, but I thought Samantha Mathis was a real stunner as Daisy. That was the only good thing about the film.

Originally, Mario and Luigi weren't Italian plumbers from the Mushroom Kingdom, but American plumbers (though, to be fair, from Italian descent) from Brooklyn.
So... It's not that stupid that Mario and Luigi aren't played by Italian actors. They aren't, after all, real Italians.

I was definitely disappointed just like everybody else when the Goombas were polar opposites from the game and Bowser wasn't a cross between a dragon and a giant turtle. The Mario games kick ass, though. The only thing I hate about them is Mario's slippery movements, especially in the first game.

I liked that but I am not falling for it! Everyone knows Luigi and Mario are brothers, Luigi was talking figuratively that Mario was LIKE a father to him. Still, to take it seriously as a joke was pure genius to me. I laughed at that and the "Mario/Mario, Luigi/Mario" bit. Took my back to the old Abbott and Costello days. Yes, "Ba-Bomb" and "Monkey" your way to stardom Dennis Hopper!
Anyway, to take the movie seriously for a second...you gotta admit they did not have much info to go on from the games. Still, I enjoyed the whole half-dinosaur thing and felt it was a good idea...BUT IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MARIO BROS.! It seemed like they had an idea for a movie already and then decided to make a movie based off the Mario games and couldn't come up with ideas and said "screw it! Let's just use this other idea we have been working on and put the Mario Bros. idea into it". NO FREAKING SENSE!!!
