I feel gypped.
written by Reese Kaine , September 09, 2008
The whole time, I figured that Transformers: The Movie would be up there somewhere. Kids everywhere cried when Optimus Prime died (I know I did, same with my older brother), and some kids were so traumatized by four other characters from the show getting killed IN THE FIRST TEN MINUTES, that parents actually took them out of the theatres. And because of the fear of negative backlash, the upcoming G.I.Joe Movie ending was changed at the last minute. Yeah, Duke died from that snake javelin to the heart, but now he only went into a coma.

Yeah, makes sense.

written by dishtv , September 09, 2008
For me the Land Before Time is the number saddest nostalgic movie, I first saw when I was three and I cried (and I am a dude), even now the movie is depressing mainly because I found out that the young actress who played Ducky was murdered by her father when she was only 10.

Great video. Filled with tear-jerkers, but ALSO full of funny moments.

I can think of a few things from MY nostalgic childhood that I'd put in, though:

- Optimus Prime's death, from The Transformers Movie
- Hazel's supposed first death from Watership Down ("Bright Eyes" by Art Garfunkel is like the saddest goddamn song in existence.)
- Jack gets shot out of the sky from The Nightmare Before Christmas
- The "Goodbye Blue Sky" sequence from the movie Pink Floyd's The Wall (Yeah, I saw it when I was young once. Maybe that's why I'm f***ed up as a person.)
- The entireity of Grave Of The Fireflies, the saddest anime film in existence, of this I'm sure.

I agree with the Muppets, 5, 4 and 1.. but the rest.. not so much.

There are some better tear jerkers out there:

My Dog Skip: when the boy starts crying to the puppy on the operating table and the puppy wakes up and starts licking his face. This scene will stand on your chest with a pair of pliers and extract the tears one by one.
Transformers: Beast Wars: The death of Dinobot episode.
The Electric Grandmother: This one is a little obscure, but the run through the field before everyone grows up and leaves the house near the end of the movie always made me misty eyed. Even remembering it makes me a little sad.
Homeward Bound: when Shadow comes limping over the hill at the end... damn.

Otherwise.. not too bad.

written by Exorphitus , September 09, 2008
Plenty of sad moments, but there was one I was positive would be on that didn't even make the list. The death of Tiny Tim in Mickey's Christmas Carol. I can say with extreme certainty that the sight of Mickey Mouse grieving for loss of his son is one of the most heart-wrenching things i've ever seen in my life. There isn't even any dialogue in the scene. It's just the sheer shock of Mickey Mouse, the embodyment of happiness and innocense, actually CRYING that just hits you like a punch to the stomach. Whenever I see that scene I just want to reach though the TV and give him a big hug. Mickey shouldn't be crying. In fact, they should make that the eleventh commandmant. "Mickey Mouse Shalt Not Be Made To Cry."

It feels like I've not seen the majority of these movies, so I can't relate that much. But I can agree on Disney's crusade of sadness over the years (really, who haven't atleast watched *one* Disney movie?). Also the Artax scene along with "An American tale", all that got pretty sad. I would like give a honorable mention to the film "Fluke". Where a guy dies in a car accident and is reborn as a dog. Because as a kid, it was really depressing when he got in touch with his wife and son again. (and I'll also confess like many others that I'm a dude smilies/tongue.gif )

And I think "My Girl" was the first live-action movie that left me heaving with sobs.

Ow and btw, i really miss the Optimus Prime death scene from the original Transformers the Movie.
Eventhough the Simba moment was kind of a shock to me, it is not compareble to what i went through when Optimus died.
That scene was so horrific, that i cried out loud for at least 5 minutes, and that was during a period when i was ashamed to cry and thought it made me a girl.
But i was just grief struck and could barely keep my focus on the rest of the film. And it really felt like my father had died, i felt empty for a month, can you imagine the impact?

Optimus Prime, the greatest leader of all times, our father and defender... died smilies/cry.gif

Here's a little bit of trivia: one of the horses who played Artax (Atreyu's horse) in Neverending Story actually DID die during the shooting due to some mechanical accident with the equipment (although not in that particular scene). They had to halt shooting for a week because the kid who played Atreyu was so shaken up he didn't want to come back to the set.

I'm not sure whether it is the EXACT horsie you see in the "sinking scene", but still.. it might be. smilies/cry.gif

And I don't care that "technically" timeline was changed in the last season and the dog and Fry WERE re-united after all, I still see him waiting and waiting and waiting year after year and finally lowering his head.. and.. why the hell did you mention that?! smilies/cry.gif smilies/cry.gif smilies/cry.gif

As soon as "Saying Goodbye" popped up at #11, I knew my teary-eyed childhood would come smashing me in the face. Saying Goodbye particularly, because I listened to it a lot when every other good friend of mine was suddenly moving away at the same time. I completely forgot how upsetting Land Before Time was. I have no real complaints about the list- some of them I'm simply not as nostalgic over. Most of them though... damn. My own personal shout-outs would be Nicodemus' death in "Secret of NIMH" (one of the few deaths I was in denial over for awhile), nearly everything in "The Brave Little Toaster," E.T.'s so-called death, Splinter's kidnapping in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." I was also pretty depressed when Ripley died at the end of "Alien3," but that's not a typical childhood film. There's also the scene in "Willy Wonka" when you see Gene Wilder chew Charlie out hardcore. Even when I was a kid, though, I thought it was a cheap scene, though. Honestly, I'm happy with the scars my childhood left me. I much prefer that to the drivel I see in most mindless children's movies I see today. Also- damn people for bringing up "Futurama." I'm depressed enough without bringing Seymour into it. Talk about a show I never thought would cause me heartache.

Ones I remember being sad are in Dumbo when he finds his mother who's locked in a cage (get's me every time)Artax's death also got to me. But I hate to admit to it but I'm a sucker when it comes to sad moments in stuff. Like the episode of Futurama with Fry's dog. And in the recent Australian show, Summer Heights High when Jonah gets expelled and gets dragged out of class with his friend trying to get him out of the teachers hands. Also the scene in I Am Legend when he has to kill his dog, man that was a killer.
Anyway, hilarious ending!

A while ago my sister and I had a contest to find the most heartbreaking scene from our childhood cartoons using YouTube. She got me with the Hazel being shot/Bright Eyes scene from Watership Down, I found an old classic from the first ever Garfield cartoon.

Anyone remember? Odie was in the pound and was going to be put to sleep first thing in the morning. He was blissfully unaware of his fate and Garfield is left to deal with the harsh reality of the situation. It's their last night, it's raining outside, he remembers all the wonderful times they had together and this song plays...

*Looks around the room*

Beyond the obvious... Transformers: The movie (1986) is to my knowledge the only animated feature ever to get pulled from theaters after only two and a half weeks, after complaints from parents and movie theaters alike, because they didn't know how to deal with the kids that were crying and sobbing at the death of Optimus Prime! Kids were showing real signs of mourning. There were even some reports that some children locked themselves up in their rooms for several days to try and cope with the death of Optimus Prime.

Good list. I especially agree with American Tail and all the Disney films. Mufasa's death still makes me cry to this day. Although, The Lion King does the same thing as Bambi. Because that death scene is directly followed by...Timon and Pumbaa!

Anyway, good video and I actually think it's a good thing that all these childhood films handled the topic of death as it definitely matured us quite a bit rather than hiding like those family films do. I think Pixar is the only studio to really be brave enough to talk about death in their films.

Yeah, still a great one, NC ;)
written by Danny , September 09, 2008
Yeah, that you did a great one for this, NC smilies/smiley.gif. Well, for the whole intro bit, that probably truer words were never spoken of. Yes, no doubt, that my favorites are #9, #5, #4, and of course #1. Actually, NC, that my guess is no matter what their species is, that we all just get attached to their characters, ultimately smilies/wink.gif. Oh, for #9, that who didn't feel for Little Foot losing his mom, and that she had saved his life twice over during that time like any parent would, but that it's also great that *spoiler* his mom kept visiting him in spirit form throughout the rest of it *spoiler end*, and that Little Foot remembered about her after all in movie number five. Well, that I would've also gone with #8, but that after watching "An American Tail 1" more closely for a few times only a short while ago, that it was apparently mainly about Fievel's curiosity of him getting to see the fish on and around the boat that had gotten him into that whole situation in the first place smilies/tongue.gif. Hm, for #5, that my only guess is that the makers of "The Neverending Story 1" had meant that it was mainly about the sadness of the swamp itself that gets others to sink down into it, and no surprise about that, I mean look at it all smilies/sad.gif, and that no worries about Artax all of you, since that *spoiler* he not only comes back once at the end of the movie, but twice, in its sequel as well *spoiler end*.

Oh yeah, for #4, that Charlotte Arainia Cabataca in "Charlotte's Web 1" (original version, of course) was the absolute best, wasn't she you guys smilies/cool.gif?, and that yeah, what that she had said during those last few minutes of her life was weird in that version of the story, but that in that version of the story that they had allowed Wilbur to actually be there with her during all of it, unlike in the book, in "Charlotte's Web 2", and in the most recent version of the movie. Yes, for #3, even though I haven't actually seen "My Girl 2" as of yet, that how she had actually survived all of that, I have no idea smilies/sad.gif. Finally, for #1, that yes it's great that you were no doubt able to do another combination one for one of these lists of yours, NC, and yeah, that I guess that all of that sadness stuff from Disney is yet another reason to ultimately allow that "Mickey Mouse Monopoly" documentary over at YouTube, huh you guys smilies/tongue.gif? Well, that I'm simply not sure about your ending to this one, NC smilies/smiley.gif. Also, you guys, that I just think that NC didn't include too many death scenes in this one, since that it simply would've made it just too depressing. Otherwise, just a great video after all, NC smilies/grin.gif.

written by Kinetikai , September 09, 2008
Ah, memories. Disney definitely deserved the top spot. Honestly, what kind of dysfunctional people run those studios?! Movies like Dumbo probably screwed me up more as a kid than any horror movie ever could.

While Disney may be bad, I think the most depressing movie I've ever seen would have to be Grave of the Fireflies. It's an amazing and beautiful movie but Jesus crack on a Chrysler! Could there be a more depressing storyline?! (If you haven't seen the movie and don't know the plot, look it up on Wikipedia; it's a treat!) I mean, if you like anime and you're a fan of dramatic filmmaking you should definitely see it, but unless you are devoid of a soul, don't even THINK of going near that movie without a bottleful of Prozac on standby. (Actually, I wonder is ThatDudeInTheSuede has seen it...)

Do you think maybe this is what is missing in kids shows today? I mean we grew up relatively stable with shows like this (i.e Shows that made you think) but nowadays you've only really have shows without sadness, deaths and really sad songs. Maybe this is what is wrong....I better stop before I go into a rant about it. those can get pretty annoying. (Enough songs about working together, Kill off one of the backyardian's and explain to the kid that yes that happens, see how well adjusted they become!) I'd rather my kid experience a fictional death before a real one any day.

anyway...I liked it. some of my favs are there. and I absolutely loved the inclusion of "Bumbie's mom"

Probably not a popular scene as the rest, but anyone else get teary-eyed when they played the song "Flying Dreams" from The Secret of NIMH? Especially at the end? I mean, it's not even a sad ending, but the song is just so melodramatic...*sniff*

Actually NC's reactions made me cry of laughter at one point, but Littlefoots mom, Bambi's mom and Simba's dad are just my top 3 saddest childhood moments that i actually still felt sad just now, congrats on that.
Oh and please, dont stay dead NC, that would just be so sad.

I give you credit for not mention Old Yeller by title, sorry everyone, that death scene is overrated. I really hated that scene in Stripes where Murrays character get everyone to say they cried at that scene, I didnt, and I bet more didnt cry at that scene then did.

I was hoping to see Optimus' death scene as well, that was a tear jerker.

Forget the birds and flowers, that was supposed to be Bambi's dad that took Bambi in right? Jeezus couldnt he have shown just an ounce of depression or saddness for the loss of his mate?

Actually, some old video games had surprisingly depressing tearjerker moments, too.

I especially remember the ending of "Another world" (or "Out of this world" for Amiga fans out there)... I mean who expected THAT to happen? And that music coupled with the final scene..perfect and numbingly sad... smilies/cry.gif

Great selection and one of my favourite reviews!

I think anyone who will see this will either shed a tear or even well up some during the course of the running time! Lol!

Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan was a brilliant highlight, especially the use of Doug's tenor notes! Peace and prosper to you, mate!

I think they should have done Mufasa's death and then jump straight to Hakuna Matata!!!!!!

Can't wait for the next review! Roll on 7 days!

I know it's not a kid's movie, but the only movie that ever had tears streaming down my face was Schindler's List.

In reply to Baba, "I especially remember the ending of "Another world" (or "Out of this world" for Amiga fans out there)..."

Yea. And then after all that it's left ambiguous as to how long he survived. Though I suppose the most often quoted videogame for sad moments is Final Fantasy 7. I always found myself being far more tearful about Nanaki's father than Aeris though.

I liked the fact that Disney movies had upsetting moments, better than letting them beleive that life is easy, pretty colours and all that bullshit, they were kid friendly but still taught important life lessons, especially Bambi and Fox and the Hound in my opinion

My Girl...
written by LordVonQuack , September 09, 2008
My Girl totally was the saddest freaking scene. That's the one movie I can remember (outside of a Disney flick) that made me weep. I just remember watching the scene so vividly.

"Mommy... he's not really dead is he?"
"Go fuck yourself"
"Nooooooooooo!"

Hmmm... my memories are terrible. Regardless, I'm glad... er saddened that My Girl got number 3. I can't think of a sadder moment that doesn't have Disney slapped on it. Except maybe Deep Impact. Have to admit that I cried at that ending.

What? I was like 8 or something.

WHERE'S OPTIMUS PRIME YOU FUCK?
written by ThatGuyWithTheGlasses , September 09, 2008
LOL, okay, obviously I fucked up by not putting Prime on there. To my credit, I will say that I didn't see the Transformer cartoon movie until I was much older, like 13 or so. By that time I was really too old to get emotionally attached to a cartoon like Transformers. I'll admit I was shocked when he died so early in the film, but I had no idea it had such an impact on the rest of my generation. Wow! If I knew it had hit people as hard as it did, I certainly would of put it in there. Oh well, what can one say except, apologies smilies/sad.gif

Man I actually got choked up and shed a few tears when you played the death of Artax. I had that memory repressed till now, but I always got so choked up when that scene came on. And nearly every scene after that made it worse. At least it wasn't like the book where Artax talks!!!! He tries to comfort Atreyu while he sinks. That would've made it so much more depressing.

Edward Scissorhands makes me cry every single god damn time I watch it. And not get choked up, I mean I need a good sob after watching it. I don't think Star Trek should have been so high up in the list but otherwise its a very good list ^_^

WTF?! How could you do this?!
written by Ozz , September 09, 2008
I watch this to laugh not to be reminded of long suppressed emotional damage! How could you do this?! What in the nine circles of H*** made you think you could make this warped stuff funny?

Well you pulled it off, Bravo! I hated this crap growing up, the third Fatal Fury movie made me cry like a baby…although it’s technically those movies were made for teenagers …

now that I think about that movie had a nude scene, a couple of gory deaths and there’s even one scene where in dude get incinerated. Holy crap, who let me watch that as a kid?!

It’s still my favorite subtitled film
