ok so this is like 'Being Jewish 101' huh
normally i would start ranking on the simplicity of this PBS kid like approach of this video
    but i kindda like it
    Keep up the good work

Wait... you have to ask "who you can eat where"? I guess this whole kosher thing isn't quite as strict as I thought.

  • darkdetective
    avatar

oh, its a lot stricter and more complicated. He was giving a brief introduction. A VERY brief introduction.

  • Juiceman

    That's very interesting.

given your trip to brookline i have to ask, are you local to this area? i'm in cambridge myself.

  • doctormo  - Well I know I am
    avatar

I'm in South Boston, I'm sure everyone here on the internets is from Massachusetts, USA. (or at least they wish they were)

  • Shadowdancer21b  - That was one CRAZY Yom Kippur...
    avatar

This was informative and fun. Thanks again Jewish Guy!

    meh, kosher sucks(no offence)
i'm actually pretty happy eating normally(yeah, i'm not a big practicing jew, actually)

still, over here in argentina kosher meat is pretty expensive in comparison with normal meat.

PS:awww, now i want gefilte fish

  • Aufbruch

Assuming you were making fun of how ridiculous, antiquated and silly kosher eating is..... great job. : )

If not...I wouldn't change a thing, even still. You're on the progressive side either way. : )

Oh snap, that was a totally sweet remix at the end of the video.

As far as the content, gotta be honest, I don't find this as interesting as your other vids. I had never heard of Shalom Sesame before, so that was pretty interesting, but the dietary rules about the jewish faith is pretty readily available elsewhere. I do admit I never heard those rules about the plates before, and damn if they make any sense at all.

The video was well done, though. Good quality, good acting and such.

  • CoolIT  - Shalom

First off I hope you had an easy Yom Kipour.
Second, our house has the exact same glass plates.
Third, as always, great review, you are a very good speaker.

I liked the review but I would have liked you to go more in dept... such as the magic question... Why is pig not kosher...

I think there are multiple views, the popular is health, another I can think of is that it was hard to conserv without fridges... or logic such as pigs eat what men eat therefor not cost effective (all that for the time)

keep up the good work... I am that unkosher jewish guy who does love bacon and shrimps cooked in butter... Sorry ;)

  • RooneyEnterprises  - Shalom to you!
    avatar

Pigs aren't kosher because they don't meet the criteria of having both a split hoof and chewing their cud.

We're not allowed to eat pig or shrimp BECAUSE we're not allowed to eat pig or shrimp. There's no specific reason stated anywhere in the Torah, just what we're supposed to do. Weird, huh?

I thought shellfish was in the do-not list because they're carrion-eaters akin to say, a vulture. Since they eat decaying flesh they're more likely to contain harmful, disease-causing parasites, which can result in such annoying side effects as pain or death.

Great video by the way. I loved how delightfully cheesy it was.

Gelfite Fish RUN FOR YOU LIFE! My grandfather ate that stuff. It smells terrible. Except he called it Ludafisk for some reason. Chinese food is always a safe bet for a restaurant meal being kosher, because usually the only thing non kosher on chinese food menus is sweet and sour pork and sometimes shellfish. Keep up the good work. Its hard to live in texas, where there is so much mexican food available and attempt to eat kosher. We don't have kosher grocery stores with kosher butchers. So we have our own version of kosher: Try your best and hope that all is forgiven.

Yeah I love your videos! :D
Keep up the good work but I too wonder why pig is a no no, I hear it's because the pig eats any and everything and thats not a good meat to eat.

"im having fun talking about jewish media" i dont get it :S you treat it like your obsesed with the fact that your jewish in a christian ruled country, its a religion :S are jews encouraged to only watch other jewish media?, as apposed to from other religions/atheist/agnostic? :S i dont get it,
and ur video failed, i still dont know what kosher is, i dunno. maybe you appeal to some people. but i realy dont find you in any way compelling :S

spose its just because i dont like people being so forceful with their beleifs or lack there of (not implying you, just saying, its also annoying when other athiests force it on other peoples faces, cos we can be jerks) . and all ive seen you do so far is sorta create a wall. i dunno, maybe its because im english ( i doubt it tho, lots of racism here (N)) i do try to keep an open mind. did enjoy your top jewish comedians, and looking forward to another worth while video

Allow me to point out, for those confused, that "Kosherness" is either a religious or traditional term, depending on your point of view. As such, it doesn't have to make sense.

Hell, what kind of sense does a Christmas tree make for that matter?

As for the video, it was pretty good. My only problem is that your pace is a bit to fast for me. I would like you to talk just a bit slower.
    Other than that, good work.

  • loveu  - did i really end any statements?
    avatar

the only thing i could make of this is that jews and muslims dont eat pig. and the pig has been a big part of the western world for a long time and has been an important animal for ages. so why not eat it? but then again i wanna make a parkinglot over jerusalem so im not the guy to answer to or ask anything really (to save me from hatemail the bible is an old shitty book that only can teach us the golden rule all else is really old and if you live by it your an idiot with capitol letters)...... do i care?

Has anyone else noticed the amount of pointless trolling and hate mongering in the comments section?

    No meat and cheese mixing...jesus!

The reason in the bible is to not boil a child in it's mother's milk. I.E. Eating Cow and Drinking milk is no good. Buuut as far as I know you can have dairy with Chicken or Fish.

"ThatJewishGuy" am I right? I don't know all the kosher laws I'm a very reform Jew.

  • RooneyEnterprises  - Oy, lots of specifics.
    avatar

No chicken with milk, and the rule is not to boil a CALF in its mother's milk, and from that we don't mix any meat with dairy to be safe.
