An absolute must read for manga readers everywhere. Urasawa's thrillers are all masterpieces.

I haven't listened to the podcast yet, as I am going to do that while working this afternoon, but I would like continue the conversation we had for the past few weeks about Bleach:

The chapter covered this week, but especially chapter 542 pretty much confirmed a bunch of the previous theories (Ossan using the Shadow, Blut, and giving a boost to Zangetsu during the Zaraki fight to help Ichigo), but I really don't like the conclusion. This "I am the blade" thing just came out of nowhere and it just sounds narmy as hell, not to mention the reveal of the true Zangetsu was... lackluster, to say the least...

I mean, compare it to when Ichigo's "Bankai" was revealed in the Soul Society Arc, with the enormous build-up and during the fight with Byakuya, and its power was immediately shown off by deflecting all of Senbonzakura's blades. Here, it's "the ocean have evaporated to cool down the blades", which was on one hand pretty silly, since nothing else was affected but the ocean, and also pretty confusing, as the artwork was really, really bad and so it was hard to tell what was actually going on.

Overall I still think the "twist" was a good one with a good amount of proper foreshadowing, but sadly it ended with an unsatisfying *pop* instead of a *kaboom*. Also, I really wonder if Kubo will address the Bankai-training in the Soul Society arc later, though I expect it would only come up again when Ichigo would try to use his Bankai and realize that he doesn't have one yet. :P

As for 20th Century Boys, I really wonder what Nik's opinion would be about the series. To this day, I say it is a really good series, but it just doesn't live up to the hype, and it has severe pacing issues (though the pacing is not really a problem when you are sucked in to the point of marathoning the entire series in one sitting, but that's another issues entirely :P).

I thought the plot twist was acceptable. I mean, it could have been something like "Oh the true power of Zangetsu makes you irrationally evil and over emotional" like Naruto did, but I do agree with practically everything you say about this.

However, I do like how the True Zangetsu looks. On one side you have the big "true" Zangetsu that has a hole in it (like Inner Hollow). On the other side, you have the small "fake" Zangetsu that looks like a small fraction of power (Like Old Man). It does make sense since the have both said they were once two powers that became one person. Now that they have separated, so has the Zangetsu into it's true form.
  • PandaSennin  - Symbolism is nice but...
While I do enjoy the nice bit of symbolism in Ichigo's new Zangetsu's it somehow doesn't look as cool as the previous ones. I dunno, maybe that's just me.

Belive me, it's not just you. The little one looks like a f***ing kitchen knife and the other one... uhh... I can't really think of anything like it, but it looks stupid. Like, reall, really stupid. I miss the old Zangetsu :( I freakin loved that design.

Think Persona for the big one. But to be honest, I only think the little blade looks underwelming. I like the big blade.
  • muichimotsu  - It could be much worse
The aesthetic varies anyway. And we likely have a Bankai to look forward to, unless this is a constant full release sword, for some reason, in which case, he may still be invulnerable to the Bankai stealing, since it's part Quincy

Being the local pessimist and all, I've got this mental image of Kubo looking through what fans posted and and going, "Yes...yes, that's exactly what I was planning!" and applying them to this chapter. If the Shadow wasn't anything but symbolic, it means Ichigo physically disappeared off the battlefield into his own mind. Not to mention Kenpachi was oblivious to the giant, physical shadow noisily swallowing him up right behind him. I hope that's a new power, where Ichigo can dodge attacks by escaping into Imagination Land.

The new sword designs are pretty throwaway, but I'm sure they'll change another 2 or 3 times. They remind me of Advent Children Cloud's, except more likely to combine into a large pair of scissors.

Man, i wanted to read this one for a while(it's hard to get this particular manga in my country). i only have volume 1 and am super hyped to read the rest.

By the way, i wanted to make a suggestion for the show. ok, this manga is still ongoing, but i thought it'd be awesome if you could review Berserk, or at least the Golden Age Arc(which is pretty self contined mainly because it's a huge flashback).

If you like 20th century boys for its addictiveness, try Monster, its the same sort of thing, I watched the anime but I assume the manga is the same if not better.
  • BerserkVagabond93  - God damn it

Yeah, i'm also reading Monster. It's awesome!!! But then again, manga translation and publication is a huge clusterfuck here in Argentina(and i personally hate reading manga on my computer), so i guess i won't be finising it any time soon.

    Goddamnit Oda.

I hate this kind of fanservice. It's not even the female characters getting their boobs out because of something they choose, but a female character being violated in a manga that's not aiming to be mainly SM-porn or whatever.

As for manga recommendations, I recommend 'Chi's sweet home' for adorable kittens and 'Sasame Kikoto' for adorable lesbians.

I would like to recommend Cage of Eden again, in a sort of "weekly manga recap recap", taken that you reviewed it around its half-way point, and back then it didn't start to go down the drain yet.

I just -really- want to know what you guys would say about the last twenty or so chapters, and yes, I am recommending it because I want to see you enraged and in pain. :P

I am actually amazed that you guys have yet to review Black Butler. You are going hate it, I have no doubt, but after two years...ish of reviewing manga, I'm surprised you have not done one of the most popular (though very female fan pandered) series currently in circulation.

Okay more strange things that pop up in one piece the underpants gnomes!
Now this makes sense, stealing clothing, profit, stealing clothing!

My G-gundam in this universe where it's a happy ending, also it's the manliest love story ever existed!(And a nice interesting closing question for you if you had the option of building your own gigantic robot, signature to your ultimate style, what would it be!]

I don't think I was able to appreciate 20th century boys back when I first read it. Awesome, AWESOME plot for the better part of the series, but I remember being rather disappointed at the way he'd bring up plot points just to barely address them or never use them again-- most of them involving the science fiction stuff.

I was thankful for 21th century boys tying up the loose ends, but it was still kind of unsatisfying for a climax after all that build-up. With that said, though, I can't deny the genius behind the cast, both the protagonists and the villains. Impossibly memorable characters all around. Great stuff.

Never heard of next week's manga. Not particularly excited about ongoing shoujo series, but it can't be that bad if we're getting a new guest for it. We'll see.

I always thought 20th Century Boys was one big Stephen King homage, though generally done better if ridonkulously drawn out. It's got childhood friends looking back at their past like a mix of The Body/Stand By Me, Dreamcatcher, and especially It. Complete with unexplained psychic powers just kind of thrown in, though the psychopathic bullies were better developed. The references aren't focused on manga or wrestling so much as trying to capture a broader sense of childhood nostalgia belonging to the 20th century. Even that 'monkey' mask was a popular kids show character.

Since I was reading the series as it ran, it was pretty much impossible to remember any relevant details about Friend by the time the reveals hit. Damned if it wasn't engaging til the ending, though. Unfortunately, I don't know if I can go back and read through it again, either. Maybe when I start to turn senile and could use my own glassy-eyed nostalgia, except then the reveals would go over my head again.
  • muichimotsu  - No non-WSJ series recap anymore?
That would explain why you don't cover Hajime no Ippo, Jojolion, Magi or Fairy Tail.
  • Rachel
I think you guys will be pleasantly surprised by Dengeki Daisy. :) It starts off as a fairly typical shoujo romcom with a couple mysterious elements, but after a few volumes becomes an all-out Hollywood action thriller with a really likable couple at the center of it. And, fun fact that has nothing to do with enjoyment factor: it's one of the rare modern shoujo manga written by a man.

I love 20th Century Boys...almost as much as I love Pluto and Monster! xD Monster is one of my all-time favorites. Naoki Urasawa is a true master and anyone who hasn't read him really owes it to themselves to check him out.

    Hmm, still seems so odd..

Twitch chat suggests Beelzebub every stream and even ignores whatever is being covered to discuss it amongst themselves usually.

Just seems like it's long overdue.
