01.10.2012 - 08:32 | SaitoBatchI honestly don't mind time skips, but I wish more of them happened like Dragonball's time skip did. Peacefully. No locked in time, no training for two years(even though that one was okay), no coming back home after some years. Just actually living and maybe training off screen in passing.

The first 3 dragonball timeskips were all training arcs, before the first, second and third tenkaichi budokai, then the transition between db and dbz only really had some characters train a bit and was mostly character related, then the half year timeskip before Vegeta and Nappa arived, another when the androids were coming. there were constant single character timeskips in the Cell saga and one in the Buu saga. the skip between Cell and Buu was also training for some like Goku and Vegeta, and goku also trained to face Uub after the final dragonball manga timeskip. Most of these were between villains yes, but the only one where training really didn't matter was where the transition from db to dbz took place in the anime.
But yeah, timeskips in dragonball were generally very peaceful to the character relations. (except the Bulma x Yamcha which really got axed offscreen)
I like peaceful ones if they happen quite frequently, because it doesn't feel like the author is just throwing in new stuff to distract me from the fact that his work is getting stale, but if you are allmost surely only going to have 1 timeskip, like in one piece, I want to see the whole world change along with the characters, to really see the impact their previous actions have had.

01.11.2012 - 10:19 | ChaotixI liked the Fairy Tail time skip. The idea of how it worked left the core members behind in the times and on power was something I had never seen done before.

I think a good timeskip is the one where the main characters don't end up like they just came back from a particularly long school trip.
That is to say, when there are enough changes in the setting and relationships to really make me wonder how everyone turned out. Also, I'd like to have at least one character to remain exactly the same, so as to make things easier for me to catch up with everything from his perspective.
Questions... hm...
When it comes to untranslatable content such as puns, references, honorifics among other things, what is your favorite way to handle them? Translation notes at the bottom? An entire page at the end of the chapter? Or maybe some sort of localization?

Yeah, I'd be more inclined to believe "Son Goku" was just named after the character from Journey to the West if his jinchuuriki wasn't called Roshi and if the kyuubi's name wasn't revealed to be Kurama (Yu Yu Hakusho reference).
I mainly enjoyed that chapter because it made be laugh that Kishimoto is such a big manga fanboy. :P
I now want all the tailed beasts to be named after his favourite manga characters. In fact I will be disappointed if they're not.
I expect a Tetsuo or a Kaneda because other than talking about "Toriyama-sensei" and loving Dragon Ball (and Dragon Warrior actually), the only other manga I remember him mentioning at the back of a volume (or wherever I saw those authors notes) was Akira and it's iconic poster.
Edit: Also just to say, I do realise this Goku does probably have influences from Sun Wukong (wouldn't know, never read Journey to the West) but there's definitely some Dragon Ball fanboyism in there.

Well I agree with the One Piece part! BEST TIMESKIP IN RECENT YEARS!!! I love the characters new look! And Franky can grow back his hair by pressing his nose! I think his look is more RANDOM! Which sutes his character VERY well! And the fact that Zoro lost sight in one eye doesn't suprise me the guys ALWAYS gettigh hurt. Besides HE SO FRICKING BADASS! So I have nothing bad to say about that timeskip, other then the fact that Robin's breasts got bigger...HOW?!? The woman's in her 30s!
