09.19.2009 - 20:30 | GenericInk - wait what?
How is going from a co-host to a special guest an upgrade?
-
09.21.2009 - 09:39 | Rollo T - Twas' a joke
Well partially. It was meant to say how TA is a backstep for a reviewer, and then I was going to insert a dig on Paw & Joe, but in truth, we started TA just talking about reviews. Now we're talking about Coldguy. That's a pretty big improvement in my eyes. Our precious Coldguy is growing up.... *sniff*

09.19.2009 - 21:59 | CR! - Enjoy the essay.
Cold Guy brought up one of my points from my videos. But what I was actually saying was that “executives” will try and see how much they can save. This is basically the four stages of a an new technique or technology in the visual medium:
1. Experimentation
You can trace the start of limited animation back to two films. The first is MGM’s “Gerald Mc Boing Boing” (1950) and the Second is Chuck Jones’ “The Dover Boys” (1942).Each film presents a stylistic choice that lend itself to the story. In “Gerald Mc Boing Boing” the minimalist design, transparent characters and still shots make it look like an illustrated book come to life. In the “Dover Boys” Chuck Jones succeeded in is attempts to prolong the humorous, melodramatic poses while keeping the fast pace of the story by using “smears”, single drawings that give the impression of dramatic movements.
The studio’s were furious because it didn’t look like the usual product, until Warner Brothers found out that the “Dover Boys” had come in significantly under budget and “Gerald Mc Boing Boing” earned MGM a 1950 Academy Award for Best Short. These to films set the precedent that you can make a cheaper cartoon and that people will watch it. As such eventually became the standard.
2. Incorporation
Once a new technique comes along and it has been proven to work better and more efficiently, it transcends from experimentation to corporate standard because you not only have people that will watch it because they as excited to see it, you have corporations that are willing to back it because people want to see it. This in turn causes corporations to favor one choice over the other, not really comprehending why.3. Stagnation
After a while it becomes very apparent who knows what they are doing and who doesn’t. Audiences will soon become bored with mediocre attempts even thought they are presented in in the newest mediums.4. Specialization
The stagnation period is a crucible that leads to the Specialization, in which it becomes apparent to the audience and corporations which person or persons can use a technique to create a quality product allowing them to become specialists in there fields while “killing off” the others.Corporations will be more willing to fund promising projects, audiences will become more critical again and new artists will learn the lesson that a tool is only as good as the person that wields it.
-----------------------------------------------
As for “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”, animation aside it looks good. It’s written by the creator of “Clone High” and is based of one of my favorite childhood books. So I see no reason why you couldn’t want to see it other than personal taste.
And thanks Coldguy, Your probly my first fan on this site.

To be fair, I've never had sex with a Bible, but we managed to cover that well enough, and JO's lack of standard villains is what makes it unique. You've probably never of heard of them because most of them are from unappreciated anime, or the villains might be the shining spot in an otherwise average or sub par anime. That's why I love her list--I'm discovering anime I never would have bothered to check out. It's really JO showcasing her amazing anime catalog.

Awww...nothing warms my heart quite like a Coldguy Laugh(TM).

It also warms my heart to know that I'm not the only person who finds it so annoying how certain trailers feel like condensed versions of the movies they're advertising. It's pointless to go see the movie when they pretty much tell you what's exactly going to happen and what the plot twists will be. It seems to have gotten even worse when movies that have been in theatres get released on DVD. I remember the "Hancock" DVD commercials and turning to my friend saying "Why do I feel like I've just been spoiled on a huge plot twist?"
Coldguy's cycle on "Transmission Awesome" comes (for a lack of better term) full circle.

I feel like part of the itty bitty minority that misses the point of "Extreme Elimination Challenge". I just wanna see someone do well on the crazy obstacle course.

What's wrong with just sitting down after a long day and getting absorbed into a mindless flick? That's probably why there aren't as many deep movies anymore: People's lives are getting more complicated and so they want to get lost in a movie that places them in a world with little complications at all. After getting laid off the job or finding out that you can't keep up with the bills, why would you want to watch a movie like "Syriana" to contemplate the problems of the world around you? Wouldn't it be better to watch "Rush Hour" to see the obvious bad guys lose and the duo crack some funny jokes?
Coldguy, have you ever considered recording your laugh and selling as a sound clip to movie/TV people? It's pretty unique.

I hate the term 'popcorn film' because it is essentially a term for a film which you would rather pay more attention to your food then the actual movie. This is stupid. Any film I like and enjoy I want to engage in. Whether that be something which makes me think philosophically or Micheal Bay's Transformers (by the way, was I the only one who caught theme of that film?) I still want to engage it. There is nothing unintellectual about an action or comedy film that does not 'challenge' the viewer.
Further, Iron Man and Spider-man not intellectual? Did none of you guys catch the themes and drama of either of these movies about personal responsibility and accountability? The Incredible Hulk would be a much better example if you want to go that route.
-
09.21.2009 - 09:50 | Rollo T
Now you can chalk this one partially up to me not watching movies, so perhaps the term “popcorn flick” isn’t the best phrase, but it’s the one I know. I don’t like calling these movies “mindless films” or “stupid” because they aren’t. I just don’t think it’s fair to act as though Twilight and Transformers are in their own cult of idiocy because plenty of movies strive for to be simply entertainment over thought provoking.
As for Iron Man being not intellectual, I don’t recall saying it wasn’t unintelligent (and if I did I misspoke). To me, the movie was about action and Tony Stark’s narcissistic qualities. I didn’t leave the theater questioning personal responsibility, I left saying “I wish they’d used the suit more” and “Man that final battle was awesome”. Contrast to The Dark Knight which clearly tried to be thought provoking and made me leave the theater questioning human morality and the choices we make. Iron Man wasn’t dumb by any means, but I saw it as entertainment and little else. Still a great movie.
But the Spider-Man movies I might be biased. I’ve had a pretty severe disliking for all three.

09.20.2009 - 01:58 | Deimos1984rd - Heh...Uwe Bowel movement lol
Joe, that was a very accurate name for Uwe Boll, Uwe Boll is shit nah..he's Bollshit. I have a complete extreme rage for that bastard, not onle does he shit on my 3 favorite games (House of the dead, Bloodrayne and of course Farcry) he calls himself a "real fucking genius" this guy should just stick with his own movies instead of failing to make video game movies...The fact the Uwe Bollsack is making money off the monstrocities and the fact that he issues a boxing match with other film makers make me angrier, I'm going to change the subject before I go in a blind rage. I am pro 3d movies for the kids, don't get me wrong I like the 2d cartoons but 3d looks more realistic and i think kids will love them even more. Once again I enjoyed this podcast and was glad to hear Coldguy's laugh, that always brings a smile to my face.
I am going to dodge the Megan Fox thumbs search because she is sexy and I do not want to picture anything weird or disturbing to throw that off.

Of course you're gonna dislike District 9 if you watch it as regular sci-fi metaphor. I thought it was pretty clear from the moment the movie started that it's not metaphor but satire. Metaphor is best when it's subtle, yes, but satire isn't. Satire is ham-fisted, exaggerated and ridiculous by nature. And I thought it was a damn good dark social satire, with a very engaging story. You might say "but it wasn't funny, so it's not satire, ha!". That's a common misconception. Satire is not necessarily a subset of comedy. Satire is a tool that can be used in practically any genre, including tragedy and drama. And District 9, in my opinion, did it very well.

09.20.2009 - 10:34 | JesuOtaku - Oh. No. Don't go...Shatner!
Spine breakerrrrrrs. Sounds cool. Sounds cold at the same time. Great title.
And Bicycle Thieves is fantastic, so screw Life is Beautiful! (Oh, crap, they're both amazing...you can't screw a holocaust movie...uh...
)They're video game developers. They're like every development studio: they like money. Like they care if the movie is crap.
But of course the reason I'm commenting is to say Thank You! for the Awesome Blog mention! ^_^ Bison reference was win. "This is DELICIOUS!" XD

I've been listening to the entries, but admittedly, it's been slow moving. We got a very large amount of entries, and it's taken some time to get them ready. You should see the Blogger contest episode sometime in late September/early October at the very latest. Promise.

Toy Story was groundbreaking, and since it was released computer animation has gotten easier to create. Computers are faster, software is simpler. It makes sense that overall the medium has fallen into a rut. I'd bet that when The Princess and the Frog is released and does very well, we'll see more traditional animated films along with the cgi ones.

On movie watchers who go to see crappy movies:
I get sooo very annoyed when I hear people go "That movie looks like it'll be so bad.... I have to see it!" NO. You do NOT have to see it. In fact, don't go see it, especially if you want to discourage horrible movie directors from making horrible movies. Some directors just have a vision that they have to get out, i.e. Uwe Bolle (sp?). Some only continue to make what works, like Michael Bay, many of his movies suck, BUT people keep going to see them, and they keep making shitloads of money. Gee, I wonder why he keeps doing the same shit, right? I'd say unless you're gonna watch it over and over, just rent a DVD, rent it for a party with as many people as possible so even fewer people spend money toward this director's shit, etc.On "mindless vs. thought-provoking," you specifically mentioned if there were no mindless ones, then there would be no intellectual gems. I disagree, I believe the bar would rise for what is considered "intellectual." It's like being a valedictorian in high school, then moving on to a very good college that's the best in your field of study and suddenly getting all C's. The ones getting A's, of course, are still considered gems, academically. You went from being a gem to being average, and the ones that are still considered gems were beforehand, too. You didn't change at all, so what did? What you were being compared to.
I don't believe a movie should be considered an intellectual gem JUST because it makes you think at all, it should be considered an intellectual gem because, perhaps, there was a moral issue, and you didn't know where they'd go with it, and it surprised you. Could explosions still happen? Yes. Could boobs still jiggle? Yes. Those just ain't the focus. So yes, Joe would complain about not nearly enough boob jiggle in my kind of movies lol. Sorry Joe. I will make a similar comment in the forums, but that's my take on it. I agree that both have their place, but neither one should dominate the other, and in this day, mindless is most definitely dominating for no good reason except "Oh I just gotta see this!"
Finally, Paw, love the bible comment at the end. My god, I laughed my ass off to that. I can even add that to my mindless vs. thought provoking thing there, it takes a second for the comment to sink in, that joke ain't mindless, but my god is it hilarious when it does sink in or what?

So glad some see the Ed Wood/Boll comparison as I do. Ed Wood was at least imaginative and passionate. His love for making movies overshadows his complete inability to make them. That's what makes him so endearing. Boll is just a piss-poor director with no original ideas and makes it for the single purpose of having the money to do it. It's complicated, involving German film tax funds and so forth, which is why he gets stars and makes movies.
Coldguy Epiclaugh Ringtone? I'm there.
