07.01.2011 - 10:16 | Fear MageI loved the "Apparently he sees dead people, then stitches them together" line.
That song that played during the musical break was awesome! I had to do a bit of Googling, but for anyone who doesn't know it's from the Mad World soundtrack, called "Deathwatch" by Doujah Raze. I may have to search that out and put it on my iPod.
Also, around the 1 hour, 2 to 3 minute mark, the video stops working. I'm not sure if that's on my side or blip's side, but I had to switch to the MP3.
On Roo's point about rebooting light-hearted franchises as dark and gritty... case in point, MTV's reboot of Teen Wolf. That sound you hear is anyone alive during the 80s retching in unison.
On Skyblaze's point about unpredictability in predicting popular properties (alliteration), another reason you can't predict what'll be popular because once something does become popular, things that try to emulate will instantly be labeled as derivative, meaning that similar properties will be that much harder to make popular.
On Cat's point about new fans not going back and watching old stuff, this whole mindset baffles me (in that I don't understand why they think that way). My little brother is 15 and is a geek just like me, so I'm trying to get him involved in geek history. I bought him the original Star Wars trilogy, Back to the Future, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. He practically refuses to watch them no matter how much I hastle him about it. I don't get it. I think it may have something to do with a mindset of "it's old, it can't hold my attention," but that's pure speculation. I'd love to hear anyone's input on this.
And finally, I agree with Gonzo, the scissor analogy was really on point. Bonus points to John!

As an aside, as much as I may bitch about things, it's only because I care. This is an awesome podcast, and the current line up creates some phenomenally entertaining and insightful discussions that I deeply enjoy! (Can you tell I've been feeling a bit guilty lately :-D )

09.14.2011 - 04:30 | katwalkOh Kenshin. That is something I could ramble about.
Rurouni Kenshin was my favorite as a kid and about maybe 6 months before the new bits (live action movie, new ova) and everything was dead. I looked up all the Kenshin sites I used to love and everything was gone or not updated since I last looked at them around 10 years ago. Suddenly out of nowhere, stuff started popping up. Random MarySue self insert fanfics started popping up and I said "why are 12 year olds writing RK fanfics. You were in diapers when this was on tv!" Apparently, I assume because it was set over a century ago it is still relevant enough that the hardcore otakus saw the words "Rurouni Kenshin" on their anime sites, reporting on the new movies and watched/read the original stuff and it has actually held up well enough to attract more fans (not sure if I am happy or not about that, all the obnoxious fangirls had been starved off by now...). Fingers crossed on the new stuff being good. I hope they finally animate the third manga arc if they are dragging it back.
Seisohen does not exist. No one seek it out. The reaction it gives fans of Rurouni Kenshin is similar to what One More Day does to spiderman fans. It disrespects the material that badly.
