You know, the talk of wankers toward the end reminded me of Cassidy from Preacher so now I'm imagining Skyblaze bursting into a room with a bunch of Call of Duty players and calling them all wankers.
In all seriousness, though, very good discussion. I'm glad that you're one of the few internet geek groups out there that could actually discuss this matter civilly and not have it turn into a big "F*** Sony" deal. I give all of you props for that.

05.27.2011 - 07:12 | DoctriniusGood discussion; good to see shuffle out some blame to all parties responsible.
(Un)fortunately I don't use my PS3 much anymore, so this didn't really impact me at all. However, it is a wake-up call that vital, personal information you entrust to these companies, often without a second thought, can be stolen just like that. Like you mentioned in the discussion, I hope this'll be an impetus for Sony, as well as other companies, to greatly improve their security.
On to other topics. Ishihara is an asshat; yeah, sort of saw that one coming. The rapture didn't occur. Strangely, I sort of had an inkling as far as this was concerned too. But apparently it's going to happen FOR REALZ on October 21 according to the same man. So strap yourselves in.
I'm really liking the chemistry you got going in the show now. There's pretty much never a dull moment, and you got all the major corners of geekdom covered. Looking forward to next week!

I wanna apologize right before I say this, but Gonzo does not come out looking well from this podcast, but looking rather tech-illiterate. I would think the video games guy, and even an internet personality, would have at least a cursory knowledge of technology. It's actually kind of funny that Cat called him out on it, although she says "people" but clearly means Gonzo. Granted, it's good to have someone that requires things be explained for the listeners who may not know these things, but this seems a bit excessive. Again, I'm not mocking, just stating what I hear in the hopes it leads to betterment on all parts. I do always enjoy listening to this podcast, and this one was, otherwise, extraordinary and very enjoyable (in fact I'm gonna 5 star this, and I normally don't bother rating videos).
Again, I really really did enjoy this podcast, and apologize for any offense taken!

As I freely admit, my understanding of how computer sytems tech actually WORKS is pretty basic, if THAT. Remember the example of the Orks from Warhammer 40k: Just because they can USE the technology, doesn't mean they fully understand how it works. That, and all the information that I had, and sent out to the others, was based off of press materials that didn't go into a lot of technical details.
Like I said at the end, I actually learned a LOT in this episode, so I'm actually pretty glad for the educational experience.
Especially since I'm taking classes to get my A+ certification, and I'll probably have to learn all this anyway! xD

I think it is more that we surprised Dr. Gonzo with our stances a bit and he might have thought we were going to be coming at it a certain way. Which is way it may seem he came off that way. We were throwing all things at him from different backgrounds and news sources might have overwhelmed him a bit. And I honestly thought Cat was calling me out as well with the 'people' response than anything.
Glade you all enjoyed it though.

Altho! Actually, what was "stolen" here was not anything of Sony's property. In actuality, what was _found out_ was the decryption key for the PS3. For one, a decryption key is NOT something you can 'copyright' or something that'd be considered their property.
The key itself was found because Sony didn't do their job implementing their encryption right.
The PS3 technically wasn't any more secure than the Wii, because they did some serious mistakes with the encryption. (If you want the details, even if you're not too tech-savy, see this presentation of a german Hacker-Team, which Geohot used to dump the key: http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=LuIlbmn- 4A4&feature=related ), it was just left alone by the hackers because you could run Linux on it right from the get go. Only when Sony removed it, Hackers got angry and tried to pry the system open, which they managed within about 3 months.
So, in essence, if Sony hadn't taken away the OtherOS, the professional Hackers would never have tried to hack the PS3 and never would've blown their protection open like this, enabling piracy in the first place.
It's their fault, if you ask me. And the way they went about it was even worse.
