The Neighborhood Nerd: First Episode

Postby sg15z » Fri Jul 09, 2010 1:46 am

Well I finally got this finished. Hello all I'm the Neighborhood Nerd. I'll be reviewing primarily Sci Fi (and maybe some fantasy) movies and maybe some tv shows as well. So here's my first episode. It has a few flaws that I know about and plan to correct in future episode, but what do y'all think?

Chuck E. Cheese in the Galaxy 5000:

P.S. The episode is about 30 minutes long, a lot longer than I thought it would be so if it bothers you I apologize in advance.

Not bad, mate! Not bad :) But as a fellow reviewer I know how constructive criticism is important so allow me to elaborate on how I think you can improve:
1) Try filming your live action sequences in one take. Since this is your first episode it's not that bad (For example Linkara's 1st review on this site had the same problem), but in the future try filming a whole scene in one take. It just makes you look more natural and professional.
2) Close-ups, much? It's not that big of a deal, but I would've preferred if you positioned your camera a little further so at least we can see half of your body, because a face is not enough for a comedy review especially if you're wearing some sort of a costume. And seeing how you are sitting on a couch I would say using the same position like Linkara does would be comfortable and suitable :)
Other than that - nice! Keep up the good work! I'm actually looking forward to more :)

Yeah I noticed both issues during the editing process. Definitely something I need to keep in mind next time. Thanks for watching though glad you liked it. Still trying to decide what I'll do next...

No problem :) And since you are reviewing sci-fi (the bad type as far as I can comprehend) what about the Ewoks movies?

Oh gods. Maybe, but not yet. Though I'll put them down as one to do one day. And I don't plan on only doing bad stuff. I will do an occasional positive review and possibly top 10 lists. We'll see though.

Oh, ok :) That was just a suggestion, but you definitely need to prepare yourself before watching the Ewoks. Besides, I saw that you are going to make a review of Escape from the Planet of the Apes which is also a good idea for Episode 2 ;)

Yeah well I already decided my episode two but I think I'll make it 3 or 4.

Since Sci-Fi is your forte, might I suggest Hardware, the Richard Stanley film?

Hm never heard of it. Though after looking it up it looks interesting. I'll put that one down as one to look into. Thanks.

I know that much of all this movie review stuff is actually to copy Nostalgia Critic... but by George you look a lot like him. Your speaking style is the same, you're reviewing a nostalgic movie, your introduction sounds just like how NC would do it. I don't know, I mean your set is different and all, but really, it feels like you need to do something to separate your material from his. Maybe if next time you explained your theme...
Everyone repeat after me outloud:

I DON'T BELIEVE IN FAIRIES, I DON'T BELIEVE IN FAIRIES, I DON'T BELIEVE IN FAIRIES, I DON'T BELIEVE IN FAIRIES!

GENOCIDE!

How about Hardware Wars, the Star Wars parody short?

Really? I look like him. *grabs a mirror* Huh I don't see it....

Yeah I plan on describing the theme next time, don't know why I didn't on this one. I didn't realize I seemed a lot like him. My speaking style is actually me, just a little exaggerated. Sure NC inspired my style, but so has countless other reviewers. I just went with what I felt comfortable with. I wasn't trying to imitate him. Still I'll see what I can do, but don't expect the style to change much as it's really just my style, and happens to seem like other reviewers.

Oh and the location is gonna change. Finding a time to film in this house without having to worry about noise in the other room or waking other people up has proven to be....challenging. So I'll be filming at a friends house from now on. Well for now anyway. Which is ok the set I filmed in was a terrible place to shoot at yet is was the only one. There was little room and no air conditioning.

Anywho thanks for all the feed back guys! And thanks for the suggestions too. Next video is gonna be The Fifth Element. Not sure on a time frame of when it'll be released yet, but I'll keep this updated.
