The whole "drug sequence" was Bowman going through the stargate. The monolith, like in the past when man was an ape, sort of helped advance human evolution (In case you didn't know, the monolith was put in a certain place by omniscient aliens, and moved when they made an advancement.). What he was seeing was different worlds and oddities in the universe. It was a pretty psychedelic and intense scene, but after having seen what the rest of the movie was before that, you could be expecting that. Plus, Stanley Kubrick loved making scenes last at least twice as long as they needed to. Again, great job, TGWTG. The ending touch was to perfection. - Zach M.
